2024 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

Common 2024 Bmw X5 problems

The 2024 BMW X5, a popular luxury crossover SUV, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from software-related glitches to more complex mechanical problems.

  • Air suspension problems: The BMW X5 has been known to have issues with its active air suspension system, especially in the 2014-2018 model years. Some of the most common problems include air suspension deflating, poor or unresponsive handling, leaking air struts, sagging or dropping suspension, and air compressor failure. These issues can lead to uncomfortable or unsafe driving conditions and can be detected early through warning signs such as sagging or drooping, noisy air compressors, poor handling, and increased stopping distance.
  • Third-row seating: One of the notable changes in the 2024 BMW X5 is the removal of the third-row seating option, which has disappointed some potential buyers. This change may be due to the introduction of the BMW X7, which is a larger SUV with three rows of seating. However, this decision may affect the versatility and practicality of the X5 for some customers .
  • Interior noise: The 2024 BMW X5 has been criticized for having a higher interior noise level compared to its competitors, with some reviewers noting that it is the quietest interior of any luxury vehicle or SUV they've tested . This may be a concern for those seeking a more refined and quiet driving experience.
  • Running boards: The 2024 BMW X5 features running boards, which some users find unnecessary and potentially bothersome when getting in and out of the vehicle. These running boards may be more of an aesthetic choice than a practical one, and their presence may not be appreciated by all drivers .

In conclusion, the 2024 BMW X5 has several common problems reported by its owners, including software-related issues, air suspension problems, the removal of the third-row seating option, higher interior noise levels, and potentially unnecessary running boards. These issues can impact the overall driving experience and satisfaction of BMW X5 owners.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • VIN: 5UX23EU09R9
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: It’s not a one time experience, it’s all the time. But I feel, and many, many other people (owners of the same car and other car enthusiasts agree) that the rear turn signals on the 2024 BMW X5 are not sufficient enough. I do not feel the illuminate properly and it seems as though they are malfunctioning when in use. BMW started using the sequential fading turn signals, which I don’t like, but they are bright and easily distinguishable in the front, but the back, it does not make me feel safe enough. I do not feel they illuminate correctly and feel they are not bright enough (even though there is nothing wrong with them). I feel as though the rear turn signals are confusing for other drivers and does not do a good job at letting other drivers know I’m turning. They pulsate and look like they malfunction. I’d rather they just be like a standard LED, that flashes straight on & straight off. Or better yet, have a separate LED amber strip in the middle of the rear taillight (like the European models have) which makes it easier to distinguish and allows other drivers to know when I’m turning. I do not feel safe with the current rear turn signals.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 5UX23EU01R9

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: 5UX23EU05R9
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: In February,2024[12th]. BMW FILED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE BRAKING SYSTEMS OF 2023,2024 models 5series, 7 series, x1,x5,x6,x7 and Xm. My vehicle was made in mid March and delivered early April. Supposedly according to my source , BMW received replacement parts from the vendor and production continued. I’m not sure if it ever stopped. The problem is BMW NEVER TESTED THESE NEW PARTS TO SEE IF THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS CLEARLY NEGLIGENCE ON THEIR PART. THE DEGREE THE LAWYERS CAN DETERMINE. NOW AROUND August12, BMW ISSUED A STOP SALE ON ALL THESE CARS INCLUDING SOME 2025 MODELS. ONLY BECAUSE I READ A USER BLOG ON LINE ABOUT THIS AND CHECKED MY VIN WAS I AWARE IT AFFECTED MY CAR. NO NOTICE FROM BMW. This was not a don’t drive notice. The effect on owners is they can’t trade or sell their cars. There does not seem to be a requirement that BMW file a STOP SALE order with NHTSA. I DON’T BELIEVE THEY FILED A SUBSEQUENT NOTICE TO THE FEBRUARY FILING. Every day there are recall notices. Most are narrow in scope but this will involve umpteen thousands of cars. There is no end date because they don’t know when a new part will be available. Once available it could be many months before owners are able to have the problem part replaced. It takes 2+ hours a car. The dealers are already overwhelmed because of limited space and mechanics. If these companies don’t get fined for this type of behavior, it will not stop. I am talking millions in fines. The FAA does it. More people drive than fly yet it seems the Federal Transportation Department does not have or doesn’t want to exercise this option. Just look at what has been going on for over 15 years with Takata airbags which could be fatal if opened. Just today 577,000 cars from Ford and Mazda were issued a DO NOT DRIVE notice on the news. Granted they were for older models but people who need transportation will still drive. Why hasn’t the government over the past 15+ years stopped the buying of them.

Negative 2024 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Wilber Farrell 2025-11-06

It's great to hear that everything is working fine with your BMW, and that your wife chose it after looking at many competitors. The car has a lot of luxurious features, including pretty wood and soft surfaces, a wide screen, and color changeable ambient lighting. The sport seats are very comfortable, and the front legroom and headroom are excellent. The infotainment/technology is very good and fast, and the car can do so many things from voice and gesture control, park itself, to lane changes. The in-line six turbo has all the power you need, and it's very fast. The car is extremely comfortable and the run flat tires are very smooth. It handles well, but it's not a sports car. We understand that the maintenance can be expensive, which is why we bought the maintenance plan. We're still trying to figure out how to do certain functions that change with the different key fobs, but we're getting there. Overall, we're very happy with our BMW X5.The back seat legroom is a bit tight and it can be challenging to get in and out, especially since there isn't a third row. Unfortunately, there are no buttons in the cargo area to fold down the rear seats, which is surprising given that many other OEMs include this feature. However, the car does have a 'clamshell' rear hatch which is great, and I really like the little truck-like tailgate that protects the rear painted area. Just be careful not to accidentally hit the close button with your torso when you're putting something in the cargo area, as the tailgate will close and send whatever is on it flying! The car doesn't come with a spare, and the interior storage is a bit limited. There's no sunglass holder and no storage under the front stack like most OEMs. The electronic shifter takes some getting used to, but it's not a major issue. The wireless charger is a bit slow, but that's to be expected with most wireless chargers. It's worth noting that the car requires premium gas, which can be 20% more expensive than regular, so keep that in mind. Consumer Reports has named it the most expensive car to own over 10 years and the second most expensive after 5 years, more than a Mercedes, Volvo, Audi, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, etc. However, the car's 'Sensafin' interior looks and feels great, and is supposed to hold up and look better than leather. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but it's definitely worth considering. BMW could have done a better job with the selling process, but everything else was fine on the first ordered car when we went to pick it up, until they went to finalize the sale on the computer. The trade title had already been signed and the paperwork was done, but unfortunately, it couldn't go through due to a recall on the car that was made just a few days before. It turned out to be a software/sensor problem, which was quite surprising. However, the sales team was very friendly and helpful in ordering an identical car for us. Although it meant driving the trade home, picking up the signed title, and waiting again, we were happy with the service. The second ordered car had no recalls, but unfortunately, the all-weather mat in the cargo area was forgotten, which necessitated another trip to the dealer an hour away. Despite this, we were pleased with BMW's high-end sales process. They were very friendly and made the process easy for us. We did order a spare from BMW, which costs $250, so the car has a spare. You can get a spare in an ordered car, but they don't normally come on a car on the lot. I'll update later on the ownership, which I hope goes much better. The software did hiccup, but my wife figured out that the car's calendar thought it was 2035 when the car had 250 miles on it, which caused it to say that lots of maintenance was past due. Two attempts to put the real date in finally worked. Hopefully, that issue won't come back. On a side note, I had the car ceramic coated at our house for 1/5th of what the dealer would have charged. The car looks really good and it sheds water nicely from all surfaces. The car market has gone from 800k cars two years ago to 2.8 million today, so the market has normalized, and BMW is right at the average market days to sell, so supply has caught up with demand. Dealers like to act like it was 2 years ago, but you can negotiate, and every OEM has incentives like the 2.99% financing on the X5s. It's going to get even better for buyers as the supply continues to go up, and the dealers acknowledge it's not yesterday.

This is our first BMW, an X5 50e, and we loved the car. Unfortunately, after only 3 months and 3003 miles, we experienced a 'drivetrain malfunction' while driving over the Grapevine in California. We had to tow the car to a dealership in SoCal where it has been sitting for 32 days now. The service advisor informed us that 'Germany is making all the decisions' and it took 3 weeks to figure out what was wrong. We were told that we need to replace the high voltage battery and some battery control module, but there is no ETA on when the parts will be available for repairs. BMW North America has not been very helpful, which is disappointing. Although this experience has been frustrating, we are hopeful that the process to have BMW buy it back and get our money back will be successful. Despite this setback, we have always been loyal Honda drivers and our family will continue to drive Hondas in the future.

If you are experiencing a manufacturing defect on your X5 50e, we recommend searching online for information on checking engine lights or CCU replacements. We understand that some owners may be frustrated with this issue, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. While BMW is still working on a solution, we encourage you to reach out to your local dealer for assistance. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the car I bought on 8/2/2023. The dealer has had it for 18 days during this time, and it currently has 800 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to have the windshield replaced because the factory never connected the rear view mirror. Additionally, the tire pressure light has been coming on since driving it home, and the dealer has informed me that it needs a new tire. I was surprised to learn that tire manufacturers no longer prorate new tires. Do you have any advice on how to handle this situation?

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive40i is a great car, with impressive fuel efficiency (28 mpg while cruising at 81 mph) and a thrilling driving experience. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with my BMW shortly after purchasing it. However, despite these setbacks, I remain optimistic that BMW will address these issues and improve their quality control. I was disappointed with the customer service I received during this difficult time, but I believe that BMW will work to improve their customer care in the future. Overall, I still believe that BMW is a top-performing luxury brand and I look forward to seeing how they continue to innovate and improve in the years to come.

Positive 2024 Bmw X5 car reviews

Great build quality and finishes! I've had a blast driving it in all modes, especially hybrid and pure electric. It's a beast in sport mode! Over 1400 miles, I got an impressive MPG of 41. While the trunk is a bit reduced, it's still plenty large for a good-sized family. Interior space is excellent. However, there are some software glitches that turn off the driving assistance mode 'just because' by warning it is not available. To fix this, you need to park, turn off the car, wait a minute, restart, and all is back. It would be great if this could be fixed quickly. On the bright side, the autopilot is excellent and works wonders when there are slow-moving queues and packed highways.

I've owned this car since mid-May and have already put 6,000 miles on it. This is actually my second X5 - I traded in my 2019 model for this one, and I have to say, it's even better than the last. The speed is fantastic - it goes from 0-60 in no time, and the Sport mode makes passing a breeze. The exterior is sleek and sporty, and I'm glad they kept the traditional kidney grill. The interior feels truly luxurious, with new technology that makes it feel like an iPhone. The curved info screen is perfectly visible for both the driver and front passenger, and it's easy to track mpg performance for each trip and overall (I'm achieving about 1.5 mpg above the rating). The ability to customize the instrumentation gives the driver comfort when following map and road directions, and the heads-up display map/direction is easy to read and follow. The ride is very smooth, although I would have preferred regular tires over flat-resistant ones since the latter is a little stiffer. The elimination of the stick-type shifter for a short and small shifter eliminates obstacles for reaching other controls on the middle panel. The reduction of air vents' size reduces clutter while the air stream is not reduced. Finally, you can tell right away that you're in a BMW because everything, like the doors, windows, and body, fits tight and reduces road noise to the max. Well done, BMW engineers, as usual!

Improved performance. Front and rear styling have been enhanced, along with the shadow line trim and lighted grille. I personally chose carbon black metallic with 20’ m sport wheels and run flat tires, as well as the Executive package and msport professional. I have been driving it for 3 months and I absolutely love everything about this car. This was my first time ordering from the factory with the exact color and option package that I wanted. I am confident that you won't be disappointed!

I have owned many cars from different brands such as MB, Audi, and Lexus. I recently traded my 23 RX 500H for a BMW X5. Although the Lexus was a great vehicle with no issues, I wanted to try something new. The X5 is a nice step up from the Lexus, and I have it loaded with nearly all the options as I did with the Lexus. The X5 is smooth, quiet, and fast, and has nearly as good fuel economy as the RX500H. The Merino Leather interior is beautiful and comfortable, and I prefer the seat comfort of the X5 over the RX's. The dealership was also a step up in terms of attitude.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that I got this SUV three weeks ago and overall it drives well. However, I did have to take it back for service because the display screen went black twice. It's currently at the dealership, but I'm hoping to get it back soon.
