2019 Bmw X5 problems
The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.
BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.
The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.
The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

- VIN: 5UXCR6C51KL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On November 9, 2023, I was driving out of town to visit a friend. I had been on the road for 1.5 hours and driven approximately 100 miles. When the vehicle approached a stop sign and came to a stop, the auto stop function turned the engine off. When it was my turn to proceed, I disengaged the brake, but the vehicle's auto start function failed to turn on the engine. I put the car in park and pushed the start button once. In doing so, the car attempted to restart itself multiple times, without success. I could hear the vehicle "cranking", but the car never started. Shortly thereafter, the cranking sound stopped, and white smoke filled the cabin through the air vents. It smelled like burning plastic. I grabbed my belongings and evacuated the area. Once outside of the vehicle, I could see white smoke bellowing out from underneath the vehicle. There were no warning messages or any other issues prior to the failure. The car was towed over 100 miles to the dealership where they confirmed an internal short circuit caused the starter to fail. The dealership replaced the starter. I do see there is a recall for the starter. However, I believe my issue is different. The vehicle failed to restart due to the recently identified programming issue, causing the starter to malfunction. The starter failure was not due to excessive attempts to start the vehicle, as I only pushed the start button one time.

The shark fin antenna allows water ingress into the components which causes internal damage, this could possibly lead to other electrical problems that could present while the vehicle is in motion. What if an owner gets into an accident and the SOS/emergency call is unable to deploy due to this faulty antenna leakage.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: 5UXCR6C51KL
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: My backup camera is so dim at night I cannot see many obstacles. The dealer adjusted the camera to maximum brightness, but it's still so dim that I cannot see pedestrians wearing dark clothing and other obstacles behind me. Only the acoustic warning has prevented me from hitting an object or running into a person. I have talked to many other owners of this year BMW X5, and all of them have a similar complaint. The dealer adjusted the camera to its maximum night-time brightness but to no avail. The dealer then told me BMW designed the camera to be hard to see at night. I have normal night vision, as confirmed at my yearly vision exam by a licensed ophthalmologist, so I find it dubious that BMW would make their backup camera too dark to use at night. I found that shinning a bright light at the lower-left area of the instrument binacle causes the backup camera image to become much brighter and solves the visibility problem. Therefore, I think there is a BMW SW problem that dims the rearview camera too much when it believes it is night time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
- VIN: 5UXCR6C5XKL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: On the date below, a warning banner and chime signaled that our car's emergency communication system was not functional. Soon after, we noticed that the navigation system was "lost"; ie, showing our car in a different state, sometimes in water, incorrect displays of speed limits being shown, etc. Vehicle was evaluated at a BMW dealership, and the primary defective part was found to be the "sharkfin" on the roof. Water entered the roof structure (not the interior of the car) via this sharkfin, and resulted in damage to the TCB, which reportedly controls many of the car's more-advanced electrical functions. Due to unfortunate clauses in warrantees on the car--both BMW certified pre-owned coverage, and also a 3rd party service contract that was purchased at the time of purchase, from the BMW dealer, as a bumper-to-bumper "platinum" supplement to the certified pre-owned warranty, are currently in effect for this car--this defect is NOT covered. Cost to repair all involvedf parts is approximately $5,000. As a consequence of this expense, it has not been repaired, and likely will not be in the near future. A Google search about this issue yielded numerous identical incidents involving this same model/year of BMW. Several owners wondered if a recall was needed, since it is clearly a manufacturer defect with clear-cut and repeated ramifications, is very costly to repair (so is likely to NOT be repaired, in many instances), and is subject to a loophole in warranty coverage. My impression from this internet search is that other systems in the car might soon stop working. I believe it is a safety issue, now, given the failure of the emergency communication function controlled by the TCB, and might become more of an issue in the future, when/if additional functions fail.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-28
- VIN: 5UXCR6C59KL

- Summary: This vehicle has only 36,000 miles, and there is a known issue with the knee airbags. See attached notice. My driver's side knee airbag warning light recently went on, but BMW refuses to remedy the problem. They should be required to recall and cover the cost of the repair.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-06
- VIN: 5UXCR6C56KL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Car will not start until many attempts are made. Walking up to the car with key in hand causes alarm to go off. Car remote fails to unlock the door and must be unlocked manually but alarm still does not turn off. Time and date reset to the wrong time and date after turning off car and turning it back on.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
- VIN: 5UXCR6C59KL
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Seems I have read multiple complaints of emergency call system malfunction causing gps not to work/ malfunction due to leaking in the shark fin. Thanks for updating your review! It's great to hear that you've owned your X5 for 2 1/2 years trouble-free. It sounds like you really enjoy driving it and have had a lot of fun putting 17,000 miles on it since May 2021. The V8 M sounds like a game changer and it's awesome that you stepped up to it. We've owned our X5 for nearly three years now. Although we bought it for road trips, we've only managed to put 18K miles on it since we leased it in February 2019 due to COVID. Nonetheless, it's a fantastic SUV and an excellent vehicle for long drives. The gas mileage is surprisingly high, and the power is more than adequate. The cargo room is adequate, and the ride is great, especially on the highway. We ordered it before any of the current issues with unavailable options, and it's fully loaded with acoustic glass, luxury seating, heated and cooled cupholders, laser lights, spare tire, trailer hitch, and more. We decided to buy out the lease early since used car prices are so high, which made perfect sense.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the 2019 X5. After test driving several luxury SUVs, I found that the X5 was the best fit for me. What's more, I've put 32k miles on it and haven't had to take it to the dealer for any issues. I'm really impressed with BMW's commitment to reliability with this model.

The 2019 BMW X5 is definitely one of the best cars available in the market today. We bought ours about two months ago and it has been a wonderful experience so far, with only a few minor exceptions. The handling and ride quality are phenomenal, making it feel like a sports car. The ride is extremely quiet and smooth, and the interior is nothing short of luxurious. The material quality is exceptional, especially with the extended merino leather, leather dashboard, and glass controls. The only drawback we have experienced is some glitches in the Bluetooth, especially when using Apple CarPlay, which occasionally disconnects and requires the phone to be removed and added back to the vehicle. Overall, the X5 is a great vehicle that we expect to last us a long time. The front and rear seats are extremely spacious, and the multicontour front seats with massage and ventilation are a wonderful feature to have, as there are seemingly endless ways to configure the front seats to one's comfort and liking.

The car has some areas that could be improved. The interior could be more comfortable and the air conditioning is quite loud. The lane assist feature is always on, but it can be difficult to engage. The push to park button is awkward and can be dangerous if not engaged properly. Additionally, there is limited space to store your phone within reach. The voice assist feature could also use some improvement as it often requires things to be repeated. Despite these issues, I still miss my Lexus.

This is my first BMW and while I appreciate the well-done interior, I have to say I'm not entirely impressed with the driving experience. The ride is quite stiff and acceleration is loud but doesn't produce much power. Even when in sport or sport plus mode, the transmission works extremely hard to move this heavy vehicle. Additionally, I feel that the 3.0L 6 engine isn't quite strong enough for this car. Overall, I find the vehicle to be overpriced for what it offers and unfortunately, I'm experiencing some buyer's remorse.

I have only owned this car for a month, yet it has already been in the shop twice due to issues with the I Drive and CarPlay systems. Additionally, the radio mutes with a simple hand movement and the navigation has stopped working altogether.

Update: I wanted to share my experience with my BMW X5 50i ('19). I have owned several BMWs in the past, including an X3 x-drive ('08), X1- x-drive ('11), X5 x-drive ('17) x3M40i ('18), and this one is by far my favourite. Despite driving 60,000 miles, I have had no issues with the car, except for some wear and tear on the brakes. The front differential did go out, but it was repairable for $5,000. I find the car to be very comfortable, with premium 20-way seats that are both comfortable and sturdy. The engine performance, handling, and sound system are all excellent. The technology, voice commands, autonomous driving, and lane departure warnings all work perfectly. I have no complaints about the X5 50i and I love everything about it, including its quiet and powerful engine. In my opinion, this is the way a BMW is supposed to drive. I highly recommend it!
