The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.
The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

I am the owner of a BMW X5, and after several emails expressing my fear of using my car, and pointing out that in its current state, the vehicle cannot be sold. Additionally, it has caused me difficulties as I've had to use Uber and rely on my husband for transportation when he's not working. The only response I received was a phone call informing me that they are trying to find a solution. However, they suggested that if I detect a burning smell or experience any unusual symptoms while using the vehicle, I should take it for a diagnostic check. After that, they would order the necessary parts for the repair. In other words, they have a solution, but they seem to be waiting for something bad to happen before implementing the repair.

- Summary: This is the 3rd time in 2 months that the engine just shut off driving on a highway. I have noticed that it happens if I have driving on a highway for 2 hours or more. The car does not show any sign of issues and does not have any code or check engine light. All of a sudden the engine shuts down and it loses all power, power steering does not work, and brake does not work. It makes for very dangerous condition with traffic coming behind me at 70 miles an hour. I pulled over and tried to start it. It would just crank but not start. All 3 times, after waiting for 30 minutes, it would start just fine and won’t have any further issue. I got the code scanned and it came clean. There is no check engine light either. It just happens all of a sudden without any warning and car shops can’t figure out what’s wrong because every time they test drive it , it works fine.

- Summary: My vehicle was covered under a 10 year BMW limited extended warranty to address factory defective bolts that caused a dangerous failure of the VANOS system (bolts backing out) - which can be read about in service bulletin SB-10057335-7958 or SI B01 10 14. I started experiencing the symptoms (warning lamps, rough engine, engine noise, stalling) outlined in this bulletin in 2018, then in 2020, after several failed repairs, I was made aware of the warranty. I immediately scheduled an appointment at my local BMW dealership (BMW of Rochester) and when they called to give me the diagnosis they told me that my car needed an oil change and that if I wanted them to check for the broken bolts they would need to take apart the motor, potentially costing me hundreds of more dollars in labor if the part in question (bolts, covered under warranty) was not broken. They told me the car was running as designed and not to worry about it. I spent the following year and a half attempting to fix persistent issues I thought were unrelated to the part in question. I recently replaced some major parts and upon the mechanic concluded to me that in fact the remaining issues could only be related to the part in question, and to have BMW take another look. I made a new appointment with the dealership to diagnose the issue once again, only this time explaining that I was confident they had misdiagnosed it originally. This time they did not threaten extra costs to take the motor apart and in fact told me it only took them 10 minutes to "scope" the motor with a camera. They confirmed the part in question is broken and are now charging me $6000 out of pocket to fix it, even though the part was under warranty just months ago, the first time I brought it to them. The part being broken makes my car unsafe to drive, and BMW recommends not driving it until it is fixed. BMW NA refuses to honor the warranty due to expiration, and the dealership is also refusing to pay for the repairs. Car is UNSAFE.

My driver side headlights have stopped working despite best attempts at isolating wires. I have received multiple headlight(low/DRL) warnings and errors because of this issue. It has been verified by countless independent mechanics and hobbyists on this generation of car with no aftermarket or OE solutions. I have since almost collided with objects in the road while driving at night due to this faulty manufacturing. I also fear for an electrical fire which is bound to happen due to exposed wiring. This has been happening for a few months with no improvement and further degradation. I have not had it inspected by BMW.

- Consequence: Loose or broken VANOS unit bolts can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the four VANOS bolts, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed December 18, 2023. Owner notification letters were mailed June 19, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The fuel filter heater, which is used for warming up the diesel fuel during vehicle operation at low outside temperatures, could experience an electrical overload condition and become permanently activated.
- Consequence: The fuel filter heater could remain activated even when the ignition is off and lead to a dead battery. The unit could also overheat, possibly resulting in a vehicle fire.

This is a brand new 2010 X5 35D and it's fantastic! The handling is excellent, and the iDrive system is user-friendly. The navigation panel is also very easy to use. There's really nothing to complain about with this car - it's definitely a great purchase for the price. The parking feature is extremely helpful too. When you press the parking switch while driving, all the cameras around the car turn on and clearly show you whether you're parked on the side line or not. It's really cool! The pick up is very good, and the brakes are very sharp.

I've only had the car for 1 week, but I'm already loving it! Although I spent more than I was planning, the engine and interior make it worth every penny. The ride is solid and the power and responsive handling are impressive. I'm also pleased with the safety ratings and fuel mileage, so I hope to have this car for a long time. Overall, I give it a 5-star rating at this time.

A great car with very good handling. It doesn't feel like driving a big vehicle, which is great. The performance is awesome and the iDrive is user-friendly. The parking feature is fantastic and the mileage is good so far. We just ordered and got it a week ago, and we're already loving it. The panoramic moon roof is cool and the dashboard, along with the new Navigation system (hard drive based), are very user-friendly. The steering is very sharp and the brakes are fantastic!!! Overall, it's a very nice car and definitely worth the price we paid for it.

I researched and test drove all the leading 2010 SUVs that are not gas hogs. Far and away, the BMW X5 diesel was the best driving experience. Mercedes came in at #2, and Lexus at #3. The X5 diesel was the most responsive under all driving conditions, combining the right amount of power with a great feel for the road. The brakes are incredible, and the acceleration is excellent. The ergonomics are outstanding. For me, the engineers at BMW have really done their homework. I love the iDrive interface and the integration with my Apple iPhone and iPod. The backup sensors, rear camera, and overhead view are superior to anything I saw from other manufacturers. I am very happy with my choice.

I really love this vehicle! Even though I live in Minnesota, I ordered the diesel and it delivers as advertised, even in -18 deg. It's definitely worth every penny, regardless of the negative reviews on price and the I-Drive (which is actually great!). As a car guy, this thing just rocks. If you're in the market for a luxury SUV, there's no comparison to any of the others I drove - it's amazing! However, there is one issue to keep in mind. The vehicle came with Bridgestone Dueler H/L tires as OE and they are awful. Since new, they have been droning so loudly that I went back to the dealer at 850 miles thinking there was an issue. There is, as they are cupping, but the dealer's hands are tied until 5K miles. So, I would recommend avoiding these tires!

BMW has had some issues with their engineering resulting in costly failures before reaching 100k. However, when new, they are great to drive. Some components, such as the plastic water pump, plastic valve cover, low grade seals, low grade window regulators, and cheap Chinese parts, have been known to fail early. In my experience, the average repair cost is $1000.00 or more per visit. If you are looking for luxury with quality, I would recommend considering a Lexus.

I leased this 2010 X5 for my wife. Although I have never leased a car before, I am glad I did. However, I am planning to get rid of this vehicle ASAP. The car is a gas guzzler and requires constant refueling, which is quite inconvenient. The fuel tank is just too small. Additionally, the backup sensor system is overly sensitive, which can be obnoxious. The air conditioning system is also inadequate and quite noisy. During the summer months in SC, the left side of the driver's face is always hot as the A/C airflow is entirely inadequate. While run-flat tires seem good, they can be a hassle when you have a flat or blowout, and you must depend on BMW roadside service, which is not available on weekends. Overall, I am disappointed in this vehicle, especially considering the price of the lease.

The X3 and X5 have the same 3.0 sized engine, but the X5 is about 1000lbs heavier. Have you ever wondered where the 'Efficient Dynamics' are? Unfortunately, it feels sluggish after making turns, and you are constantly downshifting gears just to drive normally on the roads. It seems like this one is not part of the Ultimate Driving Machine class!!

I purchased this car with a few miles on it and thought it was a great deal. However, I experienced several recalls including 3 for airbags, 1 for electrical, 1 for water pump, and a couple more for other issues. Unfortunately, the battery died and when I attempted to jump it, I ended up blowing out the motherboard. I contacted BMW for assistance, but was informed that the class action lawsuit had already been settled. As a result, I had to pay $1000 for repairs. Additionally, the cable for the hood release broke, costing me $1100 in repairs, and the plastic oil reservoir started leaking, which was another $600 repair. While the seats are a bit uncomfortable and the run-flat tires can be a bit bumpy, this car still provides a great ride. However, it's important to note that there is no spare tire, which can be inconvenient if you experience a flat tire on a desolate road. Overall, I would recommend avoiding this vehicle at all costs.
