2007 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

Common 2007 Bmw X5 problems

The BMW X5 2007, also known as the E70, is a popular luxury SUV known for its handling prowess and electronic features

. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners.

  • V8 Valve Seal Failure: Owners of V8-equipped BMW X5 models have reported puffs of blue smoke coming out of the rear tailpipes, indicating failing valve seals. The valve seals get hard and brittle, allowing oil to get sucked into the combustion chamber, leading to increased smoke and oil consumption.
  • V8 Water Pipe Leak: The E70 BMW X5's V8 engines have a plastic water pipe that connects to the water pump, which can become brittle and leak due to heat cycles over time. This can cause the engine to overheat and require replacement of the water pipe.
  • I6 Electric Water Pump: The Inline 6 cylinder X5 models feature an electric water pump that tends to fail without notice, causing the engine to overheat. These pumps are expensive to repair and can be a hassle to replace due to their random failure.
  • Oil Leaks: Both the I6 and V8 engines in the E70 BMW X5 are prone to leaking from the valve covers and timing covers. These leaks are more of an expected maintenance item, with frequent repairs required.
  • Transmission and X drive Issues: Many E70 BMW X5 owners ignore the recommended fluid changes to the transfer case and differentials, leading to issues with the xDrive All Wheel Drive system. The transmission fluid is marketed as "lifetime fluid," but it's recommended to change it every 40k-60k miles to prevent problems. Neglecting maintenance can lead to transmission failure, which is costly to repair.

These common problems with the E70 BMW X5 can be mitigated with proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes and oil services. While these issues may seem daunting, they are not uncommon for luxury vehicles with complex electronic features and high-performance engines. If you're considering purchasing a BMW X5 2007, it's essential to be aware of these potential problems and ensure that the vehicle has been well-maintained to avoid costly repairs in the future.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-17
  • VIN: 5UXFE43577L
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When purchased, it was discovered that the OE Passenger Side (Right) brake light/indicator housing of this vehicle had melted from the heat of the standard OE halogen brake bulb, causing the brake light to fall out of its placement in the housing. This results in the brake light indicator to emit little or no visible warning to other drivers, since the indicator bulb has fallen down outside of the casing. Because the indicator may not be visible to other drivers, it presents a hazard of others not being warned that I am braking and could result in drivers of other vehicles not being prepared to brake and therefore could result in a collision that can vary from minor fender bender to fatal collision. It could also result in a more devastating vehicle fire that could destroy more than just the indicator housing. It is visible and is reproduced every time vehicle brake pedal is depressed and brake indicators are engaged. Problem has been confirmed by BMW of South Austin. This specific vehicle has yet to be inspected by insurance, police, manufacturer or others, but is a known problem with these rear indicator housing assemblies that are present on both sides of the vehicle. No warning chimes or signals were present before, during, or after incident, and to this day, there are still no warning signals, signs, chimes, or indicators present.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-18
  • VIN: 5UXFE83587L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: 2007 X5 4.8 WITH PANORAMIC SUNROOF, SUNROOF TRAY OVERFLOWS AND LEAKS INTO INTERIOR ELECTRICAL, AIRBAGS, AND CARPET DUE TO DEFECTIVE DESIGN/ASSEMBLY (BOTH WHEN STATIONARY AND IN MOTION). SUNROOF DRAINS BOTH FRONT AND REAR HAVE DRAIN TUBES WHICH ARE PRONE TO KINK AND BACK UP WATER INTO THE SUNROOF TRAY, WHICH THEN SPILLS OVER ONTO THE TOPSIDE OF THE HEADLINER AND FROM THERE ONTO JUST ABOUT EVERY ELECTRONIC ITEM IN THE CAR INCLUDING AIR BAGS AND CONTROLLERS, LIGHTING CONTROLS, AND ELECTRICAL BOXES ON THE FLOOR AND TRUNK AREA. SOME HAVE REPORTED ARCS AND CAR FIRES DUE TO THE WATER DAMAGE; BMW SAYS IT IS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE ALTHOUGH HAS ZERO LISTED FOR SUNROOF MAINTENANCE, AND NO AMOUNT OF CLEANING IS GOING TO FIX THE SUNROOF DRAIN LINES THAT I FOUND TWISTED...LIKELY BEEN THAT WAY SINCE INITIAL ASSEMBLY, BUT ROUTING DOWN INSIDE THE APILLARS MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TO TRY TO FIX IT, MUCH LESS SEE IT. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS DEFECT HASN'T INVOLVED NHTSA RECALL SINCE IT CAN VERY EASILY LEAD TO AN IN-USE ELECTRICAL FIRE AT WORST, OR AT BEST FAILURE OF AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY WHEN NEEDED DUE TO WATER/CORROSION ISSUES, AS WELL AS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN ELECTRICAL DAMAGE FOR EACH OCCURRENCE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-10
  • VIN: 4USFE83557L
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS THE COMMONLY AND POPULARLY KNOWN WEEP HOLE COOLANT LEAK. APPARENTLY, BMW HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM IN PREVIOUS YEAR MODEL CARS, DATING BACK TO 2002. THEY HAVE KNOWN THAT THIS WAS A FLAW IN THEIR DESIGN. HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN NO RECALLS ON THE REPAIR OF THIS ISSUE, WHICH COSTS OWNERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR LABOR ALONE FOR A RATHER 'INEXPENSIVE' PART. IT WOULD ONLY BE FAIR FOR BMW TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS COMMONLY KNOWN ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO AFFECT HUNDREDS OF OWNERS OF BMWS WITH THE SAME ENGINES. THE COOLANT LEAKS ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE ENGINE THROUGH A RANDOM HOLE AROUND THE ENGINE. IT IS A RATHER COSTLY FIX DUE TO SEVERAL COMPONENTS NEEDING TO BE REMOVED BEFORE ONE CAN GET TO THE BROKEN PART TO BE REPLACED. IT IS UNFAIR FOR CURRENT OWNERS TO HAVE TO PAY SIGNIFICANTLY FOR A CAR THAT HAS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW. VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS CURRENT UNFORTUNATE DISCOVERY. MY CAR SUDDENLY LEAKED ALL THE COOLANT OUT OF THE CAR AND INTO THE ROAD AND MY DRIVEWAY. THANKFULLY I WAS ALMOST HOME WHEN IT BROKE DOWN. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN THE FREEWAY OR ON THE STREET AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A RISK OF GETTING HIT BY OTHER CARS IF MY CAR JUST SUDDENLY STALLED. AND I WAS DRIVING WITH BABY ON BOARD! I SUGGEST THIS BE INVESTIGATED, AS IT'S AN ISSUE THAT'S APPARENTLY VERY COMMON IN THE N62 ENGINES.

Negative 2007 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Terrell Anderson 2024-10-19

Please be aware that some drivers have reported issues with the transmission of the 07 BMW x5 re-designed 3.0 model. BMW is aware of the issue and is working on a solution. We understand that this may be frustrating for owners of a $60k car. Some drivers have reported sluggish performance, especially when going up hills, and difficulty accelerating from a stopped position. If you are experiencing any issues, we recommend contacting BMW North America for assistance. Thank you for your understanding.

  2. Barney Harber 2024-10-15

I have a 2007 x5. Since we purchased this vehicle, we have had some issues with the engine lights. The dealership told us it was a battery problem, and although they have fixed the battery several times, we are still experiencing issues with it draining either too low or too high. Unfortunately, we have had to take the vehicle to BMW for service no less than 10 times in less than 2 years. We have had problems such as peeling leather, broken front venting knobs, falling door panels, unworkable menu buttons, and more. Due to these issues, we have decided not to purchase another BMW vehicle in the future.

  3. Vicente Stiedemann 2024-09-07

I have a 2007 4.8i model and I must say that the engine and transmission have been flawless. However, as is typical with BMWs, everything else seems to fall apart. During my two years of ownership, I have had to replace the full A/C system, which was a costly repair at $3500, due to an integral bearing system that cannot be removed once broken, causing metal contamination throughout the system. Additionally, the stereo with the hifi system has not worked for almost a year now, and no one has been able to diagnose it correctly, costing me $450 in attempts to do so. The rear sir bag suspension is great for daily comforts, but it can be disappointing when you walk out to head to work and the rear side is sagging down. When everything else attached is proper, the vehicle performs great. Overall, I have to say that this has been the biggest disappointment of an SUV I have ever owned. If you are looking for reliability with comfort, I would recommend looking far, far away towards a Lexus or Infinity.

  4. Nikolas Wunsch 2024-06-24

This is my 3rd and final BMW, having previously owned two 7 series and now this X5. Unfortunately, with only 1300 miles on the clock, my 4.8 X5 had to be towed to the shop due to an electronic transmission issue while I was 800 miles from home. Despite computer updates, the issue persisted and I have been waiting in a motel room for 2 days while the factory team tries to resolve the problem. While the car has some reliability issues, I must say that the ventilated seats are very comfortable and superior to the hard buckets that come as standard. However, the car is quite rough riding and the wind noise is too pronounced for a luxury car at this price point. Additionally, the runflat tires are quite expensive to replace at around $500 each and should be an optional extra rather than standard. Overall, I hope BMW can address these issues in future models.

  5. Antwan Greenfelder 2024-05-07

    1. I am currently experiencing some acceleration issues with my car while driving. It feels like there is a triple hesitation before the car starts moving even when I press the gas pedal. 2. I have had to repair my air conditioning system about 8 times in the last 3 years. 3. Unfortunately, the moonroof of my car was damaged and the dealership claims that it was due to a child's kick. I am disappointed with the workmanship of BMW. 4. Unless BMW improves their customer service, I will have to look for another brand for my next car. Additionally, it is important to consider the environmental impact of driving a 4X4 when most X5 owners never leave the pavement.

Positive 2007 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Eino Dickinson 2024-11-27

The X5 with the V8 has great acceleration and a nice growl. Although the ride is noticeably harsher than our MB GL450, it doesn't exhibit excessive body roll. On worn highways, I often try to drive to the side to get a smoother ride. I regret getting the side aluminum running boards as they make it much more difficult to get in and out. While many reviews say the iDrive is easy to learn, I wish BMW would add more dedicated buttons. The GL450 is much easier to use to access the map, radio, etc.

  2. Arnulfo Feeney 2024-10-17

After conducting in-depth comparisons between the Mercedes ML 320 CDI, ML500, Lexus GX 470, and Cadillac Escalade, I quickly became convinced that the BMW X5 was the best choice in several areas, from its build and finish to its actual ride, drive, and handling. Unlike the others, the X5 offers a smooth and stable ride. The V8 engine is a beast, while the 6-cylinder is more than adequate, and the mileage is much better. I highly recommend certain option packages, such as the Premium package, the Technology package, the Sport package, and definitely the Active Steering, as well as the Comfort Assist. The Active Steering provides an incredible increase in handling effect. Additionally, the 4-year/50k mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, INCLUDING maintenance, is a sweet deal.

  3. Jeramy Kilback 2024-08-16

We are so glad we waited 5 months for our 4.8 X5 since we had to order it, because it has exceeded our expectations! It drives like the 5 series with excellent handling and power. The engine is so quiet and the road noise is minimal. We originally had an MDX and this car is a huge step up in performance, handling, and comfort. We highly recommend the sports package.

  4. Osvaldo Jast 2024-07-28

The car drives and handles superbly, especially when compared to the Mercedes ML350 and Lexus GX470. It comes with more features like run flat tires and xenon headlamps as standard equipment, while on the other cars they are only options. Additionally, it has a nicer appearance and a zero cost maintenance warranty, which used to be a feature only available with a Mercedes.

  5. Jackson Lynch 2024-06-20

The navigation unit may not be as advanced as that of Honda/Acura, but the X5 more than makes up for it with its nimble handling and unmatched ability to handle quick turns. The acceleration is impressive, especially considering the low gear takeoff. I particularly enjoy the steptronic transmission feature, which allows for smooth and quick acceleration in M3 to M6. While the transmission seems to work a little harder in M6 than in D6, it still performs admirably. Personally, I have driven my X5 for 5100 miles in just 3 months and I must say, I really enjoy driving this SAV. Although the third row seat is only suitable for kids under 5ft and under 120 ibs, it's still a great feature to have.
