2002 Bmw X5 problems
The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.
BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.
The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.
The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

2002 Bmw X5 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2002 Bmw X5.
- Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
- Park It: 1
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2002 BMW 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 323Ci, 325Ci, 330Ci, M3, 323iT, 325iT and 325xiT vehicles, 2001-2002 525i, 530i, 540i, M5, 525iT and 540iT vehicles, and 2001-2003 X5 3.0i, X5 4.4i, and X5 4.6is vehicles. These vehicles may have had a driver-side air bag module installed as replacement equipment such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bag, or as a remedy part for a prior recall. These replacement modules contain an air bag inflator that may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to lower absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the vehicle has been remedied. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver side air bag module, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 15, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
- Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CONNECTION OF THE SAFETY BELT BUCKLE TO THE STEEL ROPE OF THE TENSIONER DOES NOT MEET BMW SPECIFICATIONS. IN SEVERE FRONTAL CRASHES, THIS CONNECTION CAN DETACH.
- Consequence: IF THE CONNECTION DETACHES, THE PROTECTION PROVIDED BY THE SAFETY BELT IS LIKELY TO BE IMPAIRED, AND SERIOUS INJURIES TO THE DRIVER AND/OR FRONT PASSENGER COULD OCCUR THAT MIGHT OTHERWISE BE MITIGATED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT TENSIONER AND BUCKLE ASSEMBLIES, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THESE PARTS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 19, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
- Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, IT MAY BE POSSIBLE FOR THE FRONT BRAKE LINE TO SLIP OUT OF THE RETAINING BRACKET LOCATED AT THE FRONT STRUT. THE BRAKE HOSE THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE BRAKE LINE COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE TIRE AND BE SUBJECTED TO WEAR AND ABRASION.
- Consequence: THIS COULD INITIALLY CAUSE SOME BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE, AND EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID. THERE COULD BE A NOTICEABLE REDUCTION IN BRAKE PERFORMANCE IF A LOSS OF FRONT BRAKE PERFORMANCE OCCURS.

I love how this vehicle performs! Every time I switch cars with my wife and son, I am reminded of what a real driving machine it is. Sitting behind the wheel, you can really feel how solid and well-built it is.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you were in the market for a car and test drove a few models, including the x5, fx 35, rx330, and rx 300. After careful consideration, you decided to go with the 02 X5, which you believe is the best value for your money. You love the stylish exterior, impressive performance, and the convenience of the Sportronic feature, which allows your wife to drive it too. The X5 also offers great stability and ride comfort, making it a fantastic choice. Compared to the rx 300 or Rx 330, the X5 has a more aggressive exterior styling, which you really appreciate. Overall, you're thrilled with your decision and can't wait to hit the road in your new performance handling truck!

The vehicle is really impressive. Although there may be some that cost less or have a bit more cargo room, nothing compares to it. I know this because I have driven them as well. If someone rates another vehicle higher, they may not appreciate true workmanship, engineering, and capability. As they say, you get what you pay for.

The structure of the x 5 is incredible. I love this car and so does my family. The comfort and luxury of this car are awesome.

Wow! I have to say it again, wow! At first, I thought the interior was a bit gaudy, but I got used to it in about 30 minutes. Most of the controls make sense. The only control I have trouble with is the back hatch. It's placed underneath an overhang next to the hill descent, and at night, you can't see it. However, you can see the hill descent (hint: I don't need to see that at night with the interior lights on). The car has a luxurious feel, but the ride is sporty. It's very quick and nimble with very little

I purchased this car used. It's been a frustrating experience as I've had to replace the tires every six months due to excessive wear and tear. Additionally, I had to replace the coolant tank and hoses, but unfortunately, the car is still leaking coolant. To make matters worse, after 100k miles, it needs a new transmission which will cost $6,000! Overall, the X5 has too many mechanical failures to deal with, making this model not worth it in the end.

I had my first BMW at 12K and unfortunately had to replace the ball joints and emergency brake, as well as fix a water leak inside the car. The radio also stopped working and I had trouble getting the key to consistently return the seat to its memory position. During January and February, the driver's door would often freeze, so I had to crawl in through the back. While the car is not great in the snow, the DSC system does help prevent sliding. The rain sensing feature can be a bit erratic at times. At 44K, I had to replace all the brakes, including the front rotors, and the ball joints are already rattling again. Additionally, the finish on the interior door handle is chipped. It can be frustrating to have to agree to legalities every time I start the car to use the radio or navigation system, but at least the heated seats work well and keep me warm on cold days.

I chose the X5 because it had the most headroom of any BMW model. However, I found the seats to be very uncomfortable and after driving a few thousand miles, I can confirm that the car lacks storage space. For instance, the twin cup holder in the center console can only hold one cup of coffee, which is quite inconvenient. Additionally, the airbag light came on after only 2,000 miles. Despite these issues, I remain optimistic that the problem will be easily solved. It's important to note that the X5 is designed for carrying passengers, not stuff, so make sure you're comfortable with that.

This SUV is perfect for those who appreciate great looks, an elevated view of the road, and an all-wheel drive system. However, it may not be the best choice for BMW or driving enthusiasts, as it doesn't quite fit the typical BMW mold. It's worth noting that this model is built in America.
