2021 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

Common 2021 Bmw X5 problems

The 2021 BMW X5 has received some complaints from owners, primarily related to the electric steering and brakes.

One of the most common problems with the 2021 BMW X5 is the electric steering, which is described as being very light with a certain vagueness that can make it difficult to keep the car from wandering towards the lane edge, where the lane assist kicks in. This can make the driving experience less enjoyable for some owners.

Another issue that some owners have reported is related to the brakes, which can be grabby, possibly due to the regeneration associated with the car's mild hybrid system. This can make the braking experience less smooth and predictable, which can be a safety concern for some drivers.

It's worth noting that these issues are not universal and may only affect a small percentage of 2021 BMW X5 owners. However, they are worth considering if you're in the market for a luxury SUV and are considering the 2021 BMW X5 as an option.

In addition to these issues, some owners have reported problems with the car's technology and infotainment system, including issues with the EV charge status and Android Auto compatibility. These issues may not be as critical as the steering and braking problems, but they can still affect the overall ownership experience.

Overall, while the 2021 BMW X5 is a highly capable and luxurious SUV, it's important to be aware of these common problems and to consider them when making your purchasing decision. It's always a good idea to do your research and read reviews from multiple sources before making a decision on a major purchase like a car.

BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
  • VIN: 5UXCR6C05M9
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Rear cross traffic alert does not work in the subject car. BMW Owners' Manual describes a system that should alert from two parking spaces away while backing out, the system gives no alert as described. What follows is my post to a BMW Owner's group where members are discussing similar issues with their vehicles. This problem is a large one and needs to be investigated. Rear cross traffic alert is a critical safety system. "Regional field service rep spent several hours last week with the car. Made some updates/integrations and declared the systems now working. I did some controlled testing in a parking lot in reverse with both brake applied and rolling in reverse. ZERO visual or acoustic alert from the rear cross traffic alert system. I am convinced BMW and the dealers are trying to cover up this colossal failure of a very important and basic safety feature BMW says they sold us! I will give corporate one more try and then will report to NHTSA that BMW has a major defect in their cars." I am scheduled to talk with the regional BMW engineer in the next two weeks. Is there a means for me to update this submission?

BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-21
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5UXCR4C0XM9
  • Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, shortly after 8:30 p.m., I turned into the driveway for my Columbia residence and proceeded with caution toward my carport. The weather was clear, with no rain or ice, and my driveway was free of all obstacles. My 2021 BMW X5 began to accelerate and move forward at a dangerous speed. Though I applied the brakes, they were unresponsive, and the vehicle collided, with force, into the brick steps at the carport entrance to my home. Upon impact, all airbags in the vehicle deployed, and the emergency response system was activated. Prior to impact, none of the vehicle’s safety monitoring features responded. These would include the system by which the vehicle’s speed is regulated whenever a vehicle on the roadway, in front of the X5, slows down or brakes. Neither did the warning system activate – the system that monitors the presence of obstacles in front of or behind the X5. The 2021 BMW X5 sustained significant front-end damage in the collision, and my residence was also damaged by the vehicle. I deny that the incident was operator error and believe it to have been the result of a vehicle or computer malfunction. Interestingly enough, the X5 had been serviced by BMW of Columbia on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. That routine service included a brake flush.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5UXJU4C07M9
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 2021 X5 M50i: The driver's knee airbag deployed in a crash and lacerated my left lower leg down to the muscle and abraded most of the layers of skin on my right shin. I was taken to the ER by ambulance. The laceration could only be partially sutured together. There was no shrapnel in the wounds. I have to go to a wound care center to treat the mentioned injuries. Everything else on me was fine, just some bruises and sore muscles; my car saved my life. I was not at fault. All airbags, except the vacant front passenger, were deployed. I was the only occupant of the vehicle. The airbags have not been inspected by the dealer or anyone else as it was a total loss and taken away to a salvage lot to be sold at auction. The insurance company went by the photos that I sent in. I have a lot of photos. There are knee airbag recalls on other model years of this vehicle but none on mine, the subject VIN. It has had no recalls since I owned it and I bought it new in Sept 2020. There were no warning indicators of any potential problems prior to the crash. I suspect the edges may be sharp or it didn't deploy properly. I hope these airbags can be checked to see if they are defective as they can really hurt someone. (There is a lot of insurance claim communications that I haven't attached but I will if requested)

The vehicle has less than 25,000 miles. The incident was reported to a BMW dealer for reporting to BMW and with a request for investigation and fixing prior to warranty expiration. Unknown - After a long drive (some times after a short drive) when the vehicle (PHEV) is parked and plugged-in, a loud noise can be heard. The noise goes away once its unplugged and locked. The incident was reported to a BMW dealer for reporting to BMW and with a request for investigation and fixing prior to warranty expiration.

  • VIN: 5UXTA6C03M9
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The software that controls the lock/unlock and side mirror deployment does not function correctly all the time. This is a serious issue when backing up and when changing lanes on the highway. This has occurred on numerous occasions and I have taken pictures where I had to pull over to record. If I exit the vehicle (after turning off the engine (automatically when no person is detected in the driver seat) and close the door, press the key FOB to lock the car and then unlock they deploy/ though sometimes only one will deploy and I need to lock/unlock the vehicle a second time. I have notified BMW of the issue but haven't recieved any feedback.

A pedestrian later reported that they were also struck by the vehicle, but the contact stated that she was skeptical of the validity of their claim. The air bags did deploy. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The driver and passenger were both treated on scene by EMS and later evaluated at an area hospital for injuries resulting from air bag deployment. The bicyclist and a pedestrian were both treated at an area hospital for unknown injuries. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and declared a total loss. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 36,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-17
  • VIN: 5UXCR6C06M9
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Good Morning, I was driving down the road at around 60 mph in my car. Abruptly my car had simultaneous warning lights about 12 of them. More importantly, I lost my power steering and brake by wire putting all of our lives at risk. The speedometer , air bags, restraint systems all failed and went out. The car wouldn't turn off on the side of the road and after about 5 minutes I was able to get it off and called BmW assist for a tow. Since it was night and raining I and waiting for a tow truck was dangerous I attempted to restart my car and get successfully got it to the nearest exit. All the warning lights were off. About 15 minutes later on the limp home the same thing happened with all the fault codes so my family decided to Uber home. I took the car to BMW Rockville and they did diagnostics and we're not able to replicate the problem. They returned my car back to me the same day with no repairs. I'm concerned. There was no indication or warning lights before the electrical failure. It was completely out of the blue.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-28
  • VIN: 5UXTA6C06M9
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving on highway/turnpike with cruise control on at 70 mph, drivetrain malfunction warning appeared and lost power. After turning off cruise control and playing around with buttons, could only get car to go about 35-40 mph, top speed with peddle to the floor. Very scary situation in traffic on busy highway. This happened twice about a month apart. First time, had to drive about 10+ miles in right lane with blinkers on to get to an exit. It was late at night and I didn't want to stop on my own. Once turned the car off and on a couple of time seemed to clear the error and I was able to drive city roads at minimal speed limit. Next day car was back to normal. Second time, drove about 2 miles to the exit with the blinkers on. This time when I restarted the car there was still not a lot of power. Drove for a bit but wasn't able to make it to speed limit of 45 mph. Made it home and turned car off again, next day it was okay. After restarting car a couple of times problem seems to go away. Took it to the dealer and all they did was "reset the system" which does not seem like anything is fixed. Will wait and see.

Negative 2021 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Monty Hayes 2024-11-24

The car has less than 9000 miles and unfortunately experienced a loss of power while on a bridge, resulting in a dangerous situation that required me to pull over. After being towed, it was discovered that there was a fault in the drive train, which was caused by two of the eight batteries being faulty from the factory. Despite BMW's efforts, the issue has yet to be resolved after four days. As a result of this experience, I have lost confidence in BMW and will not be purchasing from them again.

  2. Isaias Brakus 2024-10-03

As a first-time BMW owner, I had the car for 8 months before deciding to sell it. While the price point of the vehicle was reasonable, I found the interior materials to feel cheap. The Sensatrac interior felt more like vinyl than imitation leather, and it tended to get hot even with the A/C on. After several months, I noticed a creaking/tapping sound while driving, which the dealer attempted to fix by lubricating the door seals. Unfortunately, the fix did not last long. Additionally, I experienced issues with Android Auto constantly dropping off, which required me to disconnect and reconnect my phone. The dealer informed me that this was a common issue with no fix. Furthermore, the road noise inside the vehicle was quite noticeable, unlike other luxury cars I have ridden in. The air suspension also had trouble staying on the level that I set it on. Lastly, the vehicle had a noticeable sound when it transferred from Electrical to Hybrid mode. However, on a positive note, the car was fun to drive under Sport mode, and I was able to get approximately 650-825 miles per tank when using electric and Hybrid mode. In Sport mode, expect to fill up the gas tank at around 350 miles.

  3. Kip Schulist 2024-03-20

Although we loved everything about the car, we had to get rid of it after just 15 months due to the uncomfortable Sensatec fake leather seats. They felt like sitting on a board and were unbearable for any ride over 90 minutes. Our experience highlights the importance of comfortable seating in a car, and we hope that future models will address this issue.

  4. Glennie Quigley 2024-03-08

After less than 7 months of ownership, I noticed an unpleasant smell coming from the A/C vents which was making me feel ill. My wife took our 2021 BMW X5 to the dealership to address the issue, and they explained that it was a mold problem. Although the vehicle was under warranty, we were presented with a bill for the necessary repairs, which was unexpected. It would have been helpful to receive an estimate in advance for any non-warranty work. It's worth noting that this seems to be an ongoing issue with multiple models, and there may be a class action lawsuit in progress. Overall, we hope that BMW will take steps to address this issue and ensure that their customers are satisfied with their vehicles.

Positive 2021 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Braeden Reilly 2024-11-17

This is the best SUV I've ever owned, and I've had many, including Range Rover and Levante. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has miss-badged the car as an XDrive all-wheel drive, when it's actually a rear-wheel drive, and they won't correct their mistake. However, it still handles great!

  2. Blaise O'Conner 2024-11-09

Hey there! You can make this your dream come true!

  3. Conor Adams 2024-11-03

Just bought this car from BMW of Monrovia and I'm really loving it so far! I have a 535i M Sport and the X5 rides just as smoothly and handles just as well. It doesn't even feel like I'm driving an SUV!

  4. Benton VonRueden 2024-10-04

The X5 is a joy to drive, particularly on the highway. It boasts impressive power (perfect for mountain driving), excellent handling, and a remarkably quiet ride, especially with its new 21

  5. Colby Dickens 2024-08-12

True ultimate driving machine. We love it. Many advanced features come standard, great value.
