2009 Bmw X5 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. At launch, it featured all-wheel drive and was available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. The second generation was launched in 2006, and was known internally as the E70. The E70 featured the torque-split capable xDrive all-wheel drive system mated to an automatic gearbox. In 2009, the X5 M performance variant was released as a 2010 model.

BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions. The X5 signaled a shift away from the utilisation of body-on-frame construction, in favour of more modern monocoque chassis construction. Although the Mercedes-Benz M-Class was introduced more than a year prior to the X5, the X5 was the first to utilise a monocoque chassis. The M-Class used body-on-frame construction until its second generation.

The X5 is primarily manufactured in North America, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Assembly operations also take place in Russia by Avtotor, along with operations in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The X5 is also modified for armoured security versions, at the BMW de México Toluca plant.

The automaker's SAV series, which was started by the X5, has expanded with derivations of other number-series BMWs. This began in 2003 with the X3, and continued in 2008 with the X6 (which shares its platform with the X5).

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-22
  • VIN: 5UXFE43579L
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was returning home from work and the engine started to sputter/vibrate. I was right next to a gas station and as I was pulling into the gas station, the engine died and would not restart. I had the car towed and then I proceeded to troubleshoot the problem. I did a fuel pressure test and found that there was no fuel pressure. I tested the fuel pump relay and found it to be operational. I accessed the primary fuel pump to check power and found the fuel pump wiring to be missing an inch of insulation on both wires and the insulation is brittle for another inch or two. There were two splices on the fuel pump wiring where recall #16V746000 was performed and a new connector was spliced in. Those two splices were melted together. Recall #16V746000 was a problem with the fuel pump connector melting due to loose wiring. I have concern that there is still an issue with the fuel system wiring overheating or the repair process is not adequate to solve the issue.

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-02
  • VIN: 5UXFF03529L
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I OWN A 2009 BMW X5 DIESEL. BMW HAS RECOGNIZED AN ISSUE WITH A SENSOR IN THE SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION (SCR) ACTIVE TANK. THE TANK STORES DIESEL FLUID. DIESEL FLUID IS ADDED INTO DIESEL TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF EMISSIONS THAT IS RELEASED FROM THE VEHICLE. BMW EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS PART BUT IT IS UNKNOWN HOW THEY DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF THIS EXTENSION. MY VEHICLE IS OVER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BY 4 MONTHS BUT UNDER THE MILEAGE LIMIT BY 40,000 MILES. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE A RECALL CALL AND NOT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH LIMITED TIME TO REPAIR THE ISSUE. I ATTEMPTED TO RESOLVE THIS WITH SEAN S. AT BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS BY INFORMING HIM THAT THIS IS MY COMMUTER VEHICLE AND I HAVE TO DRIVE THIS CAR EVERY DAY. I ALSO INFORMED HIM THAT IF NOT RESOLVED THIS WILL LEAD TO A LARGE AMOUNT OF POLLUTION RELEASED TO THE ENVIRONMENT. SEAN S. ACTING AS A REPRESENTATIVE OF BMW NORTH AMERICA STATED THEY ARE ONLY CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS AND THEIR BOTTOM LINE AND ONLY WILL ASSIST ME IF I'M A LOYAL CUSTOMER. THEY VIEWED ME AS NOT A SMART BUSINESS MOVE TO FIX THE ISSUE AND INDICATED THEY ARE NOT CONCERN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND OK FOR ME TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS CAR THAT IS PUTTING OUT 10X THE AMOUNT OF POLLUTION AS GAS. RESEARCHING THE INTERNET THERE ARE MANY BMW X5 OWNERS DRIVING THEIR VEHICLE WITH THIS DEFECTIVE SENSOR AND MANY USING HACKS TO TRICK THE ECU AND MANY USING ALTERNATIVE NON OEM PARTS AND FORCING A FITMENT. ALL OF THIS IS DUE TO THE LIMITED TIME BMW IS OFFERING TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND THE EXTREME COST OF THE REPAIR AT A BMW SERVICE CENTER.

Negative 2009 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Cooper Smitham 2024-02-08

I purchased this SUV a year and a half ago, but unfortunately, I have had a few issues with it. Despite its good looks and powerful V-8 engine, the cost of repairs has been quite high. Within six months of driving it, I had to replace the water pump, which cost me $900. A year later, it was back in the shop again, and after $500 of diagnostics, I was informed that I needed a $2100 coil package replacement. Currently, the belt tensioner is making noise and the acceleration does not feel right. I am disappointed with the quality of BMW vehicles and have decided to look for a new, dependable vehicle in the near future. Despite my experience, I am hopeful that I will find a better fit for my needs.

  2. Domenick Prohaska 2024-01-26

The diesel engine exhibits suboptimal performance during initial acceleration and fails to achieve the fuel efficiency figures advertised. I acquired a pre-owned 2009 BMW vehicle from the dealership, which neglected to disclose certain cosmetic and functional defects during the sale. Despite my attempts to resolve these issues with the dealer, they have been uncooperative thus far.

Congratulations on your new X5! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the driving position and visibility, as well as the panoramic sunroof. It's great that the seats are supportive on long trips and have many adjustments. I understand your concern about the fuel economy and I hope BMW can improve it in the future. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice with your first SAV purchase!

Positive 2009 Bmw X5 car reviews

  1. Collin Gaylord 2024-11-28

I really enjoy the diesel note at idle, it reminds me of my time in Europe. Although, I can't hear it at speed. The dual sequential turbo provides a surprising punch and it feels best at 80 mph. At that rate, it gets an honest 26 mpg, while in town it gets 17/18. Unfortunately, the electronics are suspect. Sometimes the clock won't boot and the nav screen won't come up. However, I had three Nav heads installed on warranty and it's probably fixed now. I did have an alternator go out, which took three weeks to get a replacement, but the dealer made a courtesy payment! With all those gears, it can be hard for the transmission to select medium takeoff velocity, but easy is fine and if you stomp on it, it flies. The middle is hard to attain. Overall, I have mixed feelings about this car and will probably trade it before the warranty expires.

  2. Kolby Hansen 2024-11-17

The SUV, while a little noisy outside, is extremely quiet inside and comfortable, with excellent power and very good fuel mileage.

  3. Norris Boehm 2024-11-16

The car sounds fantastic! It has great build quality, looks good, and gets great mileage on the road. Passengers and bystanders alike seem to love it. Plus, driving it is incredibly comfortable - you can easily go 400 miles without feeling fatigued.

  4. Antwan Bailey 2024-08-27

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with cars. I used to have a Mercedes, but I didn't enjoy it very much. On the other hand, I had a BMW 528i for years and it felt really sturdy and safe. Recently, I decided to switch to the X5 and I have to say, it's been a great choice! The mileage isn't the best, but that's to be expected with a 4.8L engine, right? Overall, it's a fantastic car that feels like a sports car while still being luxurious.

  5. Damion Quitzon 2024-08-12

5,000 mile review: This vehicle offers a great compromise between V8 performance and SUV comfort, while also being environmentally conscious with up to 30 mpg on the highway. However, it is important to note that the diesel engine can be heard at low RPMs, which may not be to everyone's liking. Additionally, the X5 model has a loud exhaust note, which some may mistake for performance. When combined with the diesel engine, the driving experience can be noisy and intrusive. That being said, after the first 5,000 miles, the vehicle achieved an impressive 24.5 mpg mixed and 29.5 mpg on the highway. This is especially noteworthy considering the vehicle's weight of over 2.5 tons and the fact that it is not yet broken in. If you are looking for an SUV that is both comfortable and environmentally friendly, this could be a great choice for you.
