2015 Volvo S60 problems

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.
The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.
The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.
The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
- VIN: YV1612TJ2F2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Alternator belt shredded and got underneath the timing belt causing the engine timing to go off and severe engine damage that I will now have to total the car or spend $13-15K to replace. The car stalled after leaving a stop sign so I wasn't going fast. I spoke to my local mechanic and he had another Volvo S60 T5 in his shop with the same issue showing up but that owner was lucky enough to not have the engine destroyed in the process. From what he is saying is that every other car has some kind of timing belt protection that the Volvo S60 is missing. In searching the Internet this is a very common issue that occurs. I registered a complaint with Volvo today.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
- VIN: YV140MFB2F1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Was on the highway driving back from my aunts house and there were no signs anything was wrong with my car. No alerts on the dash besides low pressure tire which I filled up. As I was almost home, an alert randomly came up with “no oil pressure” along with a check engine light flashing and the car started shaking (misfiring). The car flashed a message that said something about reduced engine performance. As my car was shaking fervently, it was slowing down and failed to accelerate, causing cars behind me to almost crash. No oil pressure can also cause fires and put my life at risk. I had much time left to get my oil changed and yet I had oil message lights come on. I believe this is a problem with the piston rings that are defective & there was just recently a class action suit of them. I have had to continually fill up oil, and now I suddenly have an engine that does not work and threatened the safety of myself and others on the road. Volvo diagnosed the issue as being valve broken, piston ring damage, along with other engine components. I now need an entire new engine.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-23
- VIN: YV126MFK3F2

The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the two EV batteries needed to be replaced because the battery could not be charged and tested out at 9 percent. The contact was advised that the battery failure caused the failure of several vehicle systems. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-30
- VIN: YV149MFK7F2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have been getting a low oil level sign in my car after 5 months of doing an oil change. This is not the first time this has happened. It is suspected this may be a oil consumption issue and not an oil leak as there is no visible sign of oil leak. The oil consumption problem has been confirmed by an independent mechanic.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: YV1612TK1F1
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I bought the car as a CPO on 9/25/19 32,860 mi. On 8/19/20 at 50,052 the engine failed. The oscillating dampener rubber separated causing serpentine belt to break, which in turn got caught in timing belt which caused that to break which then caused bent valves and valves to break. The failure was sudden. Had I been on the interstate I’d be severely injured or dead. I was told that I needed a new engine but they could not find one. I was told they would completely re-build my engine. In the end they replaced the cylinder head and starter under warranty. I was never told they didn’t re-build the engine and also used “ good parts” from the old engine. In the following months I had the car in the Volvo shop (Hendricks Volvo Charleston, SC). At 50,277 miles the check engine light showed a problem with the Cam shaft position sensor on 9/3/20. They claim to have driven the car 100 miles and cleared the code w/no repairs. On 3/18/21 w/ 64,485 miles, I took the car into the dealer because it was running and idling rough. They found no codes and they aligned the car. “Couldn’t duplicate”. The right rear door never shut properly and I was repeatedly told it was fine. Re-call on latches. Seat belts on rt rear passenger constantly was stuck. This is where my granddaughter’s car seat was placed. I’ll have to skip some. At 110,024 miles on 11/28/22 the car continued to have bad gas mileage and heavy oil use. I was told that the EGR leak detection pump was faulty and was replaced. At 113,706 miles on 1/19/2023 the cam VVT Solenoid was changed. Cause of poor gas mileage stated. On 3/29/23 at 116,790 miles replaced brakes and had aligned. Service tech noticed oil under the car underside while up on racks. Said it would be fine until next service. On 7/3/23 the engine failed again on the road and was towed to the dealer. Apparently a fuel injector failed causing gas to spray into the engine causing it to lose compression. I’ve never been given a clear answer. Records of services done.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
- VIN: YV126MFK9F2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have a 2015 Volvo S60 T5 that I purchased 08 -2021 from Volvo that is consuming oil. I have had the oil changed (out of pocket) 3 times within 10,000 miles because the low oil light was on and I had purchased a extended warranty and wanted to play it safe. Never once did any Volvo service staff mention that this model car had a issue with oil consumption. After researching this cars history I came across a bulletin on the NHTSA webpage that Volvo has known about the issue on or around 11-02-2020. Webpage ( https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10184147-9999.pdf) I received a letter from Volvo about Excessive oil consumption dated February 3, 2023 and I contacted their customer service department. I was told that my car original delivery date was Sept 2014 and that the car is now out of warranty and I would have to pay for anything related to the oil consumption issue. I when to my extended warranty that I purchased with the car ($5000 for 4 years). Within the language of the service contract under "EXCLUSIONS" #17 reads "The correction of oil consumption" It seems to me the Volvo purposely withheld this information from Volvo owners and only sent out a letter to most owners after the factory warranty expired. In my case my car was 5 months out of warranty and they were a wear of the issue in 2020 and failed to notify millions of Volvo owners. *All service records are available but contain personal information for this complaint. Thank you for your time in this matter and this letter may be forwarded to the appropriate department for review.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-17
- VIN: YV140MFM6F1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Excessive Oil Consumption resulting in piston damage/failure! This vehicle has burned oil since I bought it used at about 80,000 miles. I checked the carfax prior to purchasing it and it had been maintained routinely. I have to add a liter of oil every couple of weeks. This is with regular in town driving. I have reported the issue numerous times to the Volvo dealer when I bring it in for regular maintenance and repairs. I have been told by the Volvo service advisor to just add oil. It was a known issue. Sometimes I have warning lights telling me it has low oil. I also check the oil level to know to add oil. I always check my oil level before any trip. I always keep oil in my car because of this issue. Otherwise, I have had to stop and buy oil once on a trip. Since it told me to add oil on my way back. However, one serious safety issue was having to pull off on a desert highway to add oil. The car was giving me a red warning triangle that I had never seen before. My child had to shine a light for me to see so I could add oil. She was VERY AFRAID. Although Volvo sent a letter acknowledging this vehicle problem, I have been told that I do not qualify for any warranty. I was told by Volvo service that I have a misfire/loss in power and over $5000 in repairs in Feb 2023. I have already paid for some related repairs when my check engine light came on last year. My check engine light is currently on. In the last year alone (prior to Feb 2023), I have spent over $5000 in repairs. I would have traded it in, but I kept being told how great of a car it was by the service advisor. I am sick! I do not want to continue wasting money on a car that I no longer feel safe in. I am afraid to drive it out of town.

I had a 2012 S60 T5 and loved it, but I really wanted xenons (all Volvo cars should have xenons period). The 2015.5 platinum makes an already good car superb. It's simply fun to drive -- not as fun as my old Merc C230 coupe, but still pretty darn good for a sedan. In the first few months, I got about 33 hwy and 28-29 combined mileage, which should get better, indeed I hope it does with the touted drive-e engine (I was at 24 combined in my 2012 T5). Even after 14 months, my combined mileage barely holds on to 29mpg -- that's equal to or less than many CUVs on the market now; one would think it'd be well over 30 in a small sedan. After being saved by the collision mitigation warning light and beep (almost rear ended someone), I can't help but appreciate it. Although it goes off when I'm driving in housing divisions and weaving around parked cars on the road, it's still a great feature. What I REALLY wish this car had was more tech, or easy tech. I want to be on my phone or desktop and EASILY send directions to a destination (because it takes FOREVER to do it in the car). You have to use a special app / website, then it doesn't always load in the car, and if it does, it will take many, many minutes. So, still a lot of updating to do there. I also wish with voice nav you could say

Overall, the Volvo is a nice car to drive, with great styling and excellent handling and brakes. The front seating is very comfortable and the AWD is very sure-footed, even helping with powered turns on dry pavement. The sound system is of very good quality and the interior materials are excellent. Dealer support is also excellent. However, Volvo charges more than many other brands and provides less in some key areas, like rear seat and trunk space, spare tire, GPS traffic guidance, etc. The 5-cyl 'T5' engine has decent power, especially at lower speeds where it is very torquey, but unimpressive at highway speeds. There is some noticeable wind noise and a fair amount of odd or annoying noises from the many electronics. The Volvo GPS navigation is okay but slow, and entering destinations can be very frustrating or even impossible, but it does make good calls on traffic conditions. Unfortunately, the traffic guidance has expired and to get it back requires a complicated process of Internet subscription, traffic reports subscription, etc., all at extra monthly costs. This is in contrast to a $150 Garmin which can have lifetime traffic and map updates. There are no 'cubbies', so no open or casual storage for driver stuff beyond the glove box and console box, both of which are okay but awkward to reach while driving. The alleged 'city traffic' automatic braking feature has never worked when tested. Additionally, there is no spare tire included, and the standard gel tire repair system may serve for most punctures, but if there is a large puncture or tear, it's useless, and it can potentially ruin wheel balance and/or the TPMS sensor, adding cost and trouble to your follow-up repair woes.Adding a spare tire is definitely the right thing to do, but it can be expensive and unfortunately, it makes the trunk almost useless. It's a shame that this expensive luxury car doesn't come with a rubber bumper guard like most other cars, even low-priced ones. The rear seat room is quite limited, and it can be uncomfortable for passengers unless they are small. However, there is a stretched version of the S60 available with more rear seat room, which is significantly more expensive but at least acceptable and usable. The trunk is okay if you don't add an optional spare tire, but not having a spare tire is not a wise decision. As for the media/info screen system, it can be tedious and unsafe to use while driving. The buttons and dials are not tactile, which can be confusing for the driver. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving the car, and it is exceptionally safe if/when needed. Overall, it's a solid car, but there are some unnecessary and unexpected annoyances that make it less than perfect.

I was considering leasing a 2014 model year car, but the dealership offered me a great deal on a 2015 model with better features. I am absolutely loving this car! The interior is incredibly refined and comfortable, and I have plenty of headroom despite my usual struggles with sunroofs. The car's performance is excellent, and I'm pleased with the mileage. The lease terms were fantastic, including full maintenance and warranty. The stereo system is great, and the road noise is manageable. My only minor issue is with the styling, which is not bad, but reminds me a bit too much of a Ford Fusion. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. I compared it to the Cadillac ATS, Lincoln MKZ, and BMW 325i, and it was the most affordable option that didn't require any compromises (although the MKZ did have a bit more space). Update: While it's a good car, it can be a bit boring at times. Unfortunately, the mileage doesn't quite live up to the sticker's claims, but this seems to be an industry-wide issue. Nonetheless, it remains an excellent value for the money.

This car is a fantastic highway cruiser. It's composed, quiet, and incredibly comfortable for my 80-mile commute to work. The car is a rocket, whether in sport mode or not. What's great is that you have options. In normal mode, the car accelerates with the authority you dictate with your right foot, but you can also drive leisurely. Switch to sport mode and the car is absolutely manic - press the gas and hold on tight. It feels like it will never stop accelerating. The only drawback in sport mode is that it can feel twitchy at times.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of driving this car. It exudes a sporty and stylish vibe, and the driving experience is nothing short of exhilarating. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, adding to the overall enjoyment of the ride. However, I did encounter a minor inconvenience when I had to replace the tires at 20k miles, which was a first for me during a lease. Despite this, I was able to replace them for $1000, with 10 months still remaining on the lease. 😩

Hi there! I've had the pleasure of owning a variety of cars, including Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, Chevy, and Hyundai. However, I must say that my experience with this Volvo S60 has been a bit challenging. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop a few times, including for airbag sensor issues and an engine rebuild. With only 30,000 miles on it, I was surprised to have these problems. I'm hoping that Volvo will be able to help me out and possibly buy it back before my lease ends in 4 months.

I purchased a used 2015 Volvo last year and have been experiencing some issues with it despite taking it in for regular maintenance and oil changes. It's worth noting that the clip in the gear shifter of Volvos is known to break easily. Mine broke when the car was only 2 years old, even though I treated it the same way I did my Jeep Cherokee. Prior to owning my S60, I had always dreamed of owning a Cadillac, but now I'm not so sure about luxury vehicles. Unless you have some extra cash to spare, it might be best to avoid purchasing a Volvo. Thanks for reading!

I empathize with the reviewer's experience of having several flat tires in a year with their two S60s. It is concerning that the tire lights came on after only 12,000 miles and did not go off even after adding more air. The reviewer brought the car to Volvo Service and was informed that it was a technology glitch, which was promptly fixed. However, the tire lights came on again a week later. Upon bringing the car in again, the reviewer was informed that all four tires needed to be replaced due to excessive wear. This seems unreasonable given that the car is only a year old and the reviewer is a safe driver who follows speed limits. The cost of $1000 for new tires is also a significant expense. It is important for Volvo to address this issue and provide a satisfactory resolution for the reviewer.

This car needs to be recalled due to the safety concerns caused by the Continental tires. I have experienced 3 flat tires in 6 months, 2 of which were blowouts on the expressway while my 7-year-old daughter was in the car. The absence of a spare tire and a malfunctioning lighter socket made it impossible for me to fix the tire myself. It is imperative that the manufacturer takes action to ensure the safety of its customers.

During the first 5K miles after delivery, my new car experienced multiple issues with its electrical system, sensors, and tires. Despite the inconvenience of having to get these issues resolved, I was confident in my ability to communicate the problems to the dealer and have them repaired correctly. However, I was disappointed with the lack of accountability demonstrated by Volvo when these issues arose. In the past, Volvo was known for their exceptional after-sales service, but it seems that their focus has shifted to sales. I believe that Volvo can and should do better in terms of taking responsibility for their products and providing quality service to their customers.
