2014 Volvo S60 problems
The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.
The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.
The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.
The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-17
- VIN: YV1612FS2E2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: As part of routine scheduled maintenance for this car, it was determined that there is excessive oil consumption occurring in the engine which requires the piston rings to be replaced. In conversations with the Volvo dealership and other Volvo repair facilities, this appears to be a known issue with this make and model of Volvo. I purchased this car from the Volvo dealership and have taken it back to the dealership for every scheduled maintenance/servicing recommendation. An engine failure of this type with this low of mileage is concerning. Volvo has apparently acknowledged this issue for this make and model and has paid for the required repairs in some cases. I want to raise this issue so that future owners of this model of used car can be aware before purchasing this car.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-24
- VIN: YV1612FS7E2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 1. The engine has been compromised due to excessive oil consumption for at least half the life of the vehicle. The oil level was detected y a Volvo mechanics being 4 quarts low despite the vehicle not being due for an oil change for another 2,200 miles. At that time, the vehicle was still under extended warranty 2. Had the low oil level not been detected , I would have run out of oil on the freeway and the engine would have caught fire 3. I monitored oil consumption over 5 months and documented significant consumption on the order of 1 quart over 500 miles 4. I opened a case with Volvo in Feb. 2021, and I was sent to one of their dealers for an oil consumption test. The service dealer stated the test was normal, despite the fact that the dipstick level drop corresponded to 1.5 quarts of oil consumed over 1000 miles (documented by photos). Volvo then closed the case 5. I continued to monitor oil consumption myself and topped up the oil as needed at a rate of 1 quart per 600 miles. Since Feb. 2021, over 30,000 driven miles, I have added ~ 60 quarts of oil, in addition to continuing to perform oil changes as recommended by Volvo dealers 6. For the record, Volvo has been concealing their excessive oil consumption by administering 7 quarts and even 8 quarts of oil at each oil change instead of the owner's manual recommended 5.8 quarts. I have 15 oil service record documents from Volvo service facilities for all my oil services documenting the above 7. In Nov 2023 my catalytic converter issues error codes due to low performance caused by excessive oil consumption 8. On [XXX] while driving to Cleveland I had several misfires, the engine started shaking on the freeway and barely made it to Cleveland 9. On [XXX] I took the car to a Volvo dealership where it was diagnosed with severe engine damage from prolonged oil consumption. I re-opened a case with Volvo to cover repairs (~$7000) and loaner car. So far Volvo has been silent and slow. 10. Doc upload not working below. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-12
- VIN: YV1612FS6E1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving my car and one day I got a warning to stop car immediately that there was no oil. I get regular oil changes and maintenance. I checked the oil and it was empty. There are no leaks, nothing burning out of the exhaust. I added oil and 2 weeks later same warning, I have to add oil 1-2 times a month. I took the car to Volvo and they couldn’t find an issue. I took the car to family mechanic and he said there is a known issue w Volvo cars pistons rings going bad and causing oil to burn. He said there is a class action law suit about this very thing. I took the car back to Volvo dealer and they found the issue and want $8000 to correct it. Volvo knows about their faulty piston rings. They even acknowledged it at the dealer and told me to put something in my oil and keep adding oil monthly. They told me the car will be fine as along as I add oil. However I don’t feel I need to add oil to a car 1-2 times a month. I’ve also had error warnings that there is no coolant. Volvo also knows about this and refuses to correct or recall the car
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- VIN: YV1612FS8E2
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The engine oil pressure sensor is not activated in my 2014 volvo s60 software, also combined with what i found out was a known issue of excessive oil. My car engine oil pressure got too low, and there was no warning displayed in the Driver Information Module (DIM). the car started stalling while driving and i almost had a crash. I found out there was a recall on the 2012 volvo S60 but there was none on my 2014 which had the same issue. I have since taking the car to the dealership and not only did i almost lose my life in a crash i was also told the engine was permanently damaged. i have reported the case to volvo they need to expand the years the recall was on and also need to fix my engine which was due to manufacturers defect
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-24
- VIN: YV1612FH6E2
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: It has come to my attention my 2014 Volvo s60 has a well known and documented problem of excessive oil consumption internally. It has to do with the pistons and the pump rings and is well known by Volvo since 2013. It is not a leak but an issue with the manufacture which seems like an obvious reason to recall and make them fix it. How do we not know more crashes or fires aren't caused from this when the company is clearly trying to cover it up??!! I was not aware of it before I purchased the vehicle but received a letter from Volvo stating the issue and the extended warranty will be added from 8 years or 100,000 miles. However, the years start from when the vehicle was first sold, in my case 8/31/13 so even though I have not exceeded the 100K miles they will not fix my problem. They quoted me $9k for the repair and claimed they could do nothing else about it. How can it be a company knows for years this is an issue and doesn't warn buyers nor do they do anything to try and remedy the issue until they see a class action lawsuit coming..???? the NHTSA MUST GET INVOLVED TO HELP CONSUMERS. THIS IS A WIDLEY KNOWN AND DOCUEMNTED ISSUE. If I was not aware or cared about my car other then the scheduled oil change it could blow up and injure me or another driver easily if their is no oil in the car. That is absolutely unacceptable. How can you allow this to not be recalled? It has been known and is allowed to not be remedied? They are even reimbursing people who had already paid for this repair so it seem obvious they know its now right but until someone forces them to fix it, they can just quietly fix the bare minimum. The fact it is not known to the public should alone be a safety issue, people don't buy a $30k car to drive around with oil in the back and have to worry their car will explode if they don't add oil every 1k miles. As I said, I got a letter for an extended warranty that doesn't even apply and when I called volvo they said nothing can be done. PLEASE HELP

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-21
- VIN: YV1612FS3E1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON 7/21/2019, MY 2014 VOLVO S60 (WITH 58,582 MILES) WOULD NOT START. THERE WERE NO ERROR LIGHTS, AND I HAD MY VEHICLE FULLY SERVICED IN APRIL 2019. I HAD ALSO DRIVEN MY CAR THE DAY BEFORE, AND THERE WERE NO ISSUES. I CALLED MY ROADSIDE SERVICE COMPANY AND HAD MY BATTERY CHECKED, BUT THE BATTERY WAS NOT THE ISSUE. I HAD TO TOW MY CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP. THE FIRST REPAIR SHOP STATED THAT THE 'SERPENTINE BELT FAILED AND WORKED ITS WAY INTO THE TIMING COVER, CAUSING THE TIMING BELT TO BECOME MISALIGNED. THIS CONDITION CAUSED THE VALVES IN THE CYLINDER HEAD TO CONTACT THE PISTONS AND BENT THE VALVES. CAR HAS NO COMPRESSION. WILL REQUIRE CYLINDER HEAD REPLACEMENT.' THIS FACILITY INDICATED THAT I WOULD NEED THE ASSEMBLY HEAD REPLACED ($7,424.03), A/C BELT REPLACED ($57.41), ALTERNATOR BELT REPLACED ($73.81), AND SERPENTINE BELT TENSIONER REPLACED ($131.09). ADDITIONALLY, BASED ON THIS SHOP'S REPORTS, MY VEHICLE'S WARRANTY COMPANY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIRS. DUE TO THE HIGH COST OF REPAIRS, I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO A DIFFERENT SHOP FOR A SECOND OPINION. THIS SHOP STATED THAT 'ENGINE HAS NO COMPRESSION. INSPECTED CYLINDER WITH BORESCOPE. VALVE CONTACT MARKS VISIBLE ON TOP OF THE PISTONS. NEEDS INTERNAL ENGINE REPAIRS.' THE SECOND SHOP SAID SIMILAR THINGS AS THE FIRST SHOP. I DECIDED TO TOW MY CAR TO MY FATHER'S SHOP IN TEXAS, WHERE I KNEW I WOULD RECEIVE AN HONEST ASSESSMENT OF WHAT WENT WRONG. MY FATHER DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AFTER TAKING THE ENGINE APART. ONE OF THE LEVERS WAS NO LONGER SECURING THE TIMING BELT, THUS CAUSING THE TIMING BELT AND ALL THE SUBSEQUENT PARTS TO MALFUNCTION. I HAVE INDICATED THE FAILED LEVER IN THIS PICTURE. RATHER THAN REBUILDING THE ENGINE, MY FATHER INSTALLED A NEW ENGINE. HE ALSO REPLACED THE GASKETS AND TIMING KIT. AFTER HE COMPLETED THE REPAIRS, HE SHIPPED THE CAR BACK TO DC, AND IT HAS BEEN DRIVING WELL.

Positive 2014 Volvo S60 car reviews

I've owned many vehicles in the past, but my S60 is the perfect combination of European performance and luxury, with the added bonus of reliability and lower cost of ownership. It's a joy to drive every day, and I appreciate its all-around competence. The quality of the car is exceptional, with a solid build that I didn't experience with my previous vehicles. The leather interior is a personal favourite of mine, as it's thick, comfortable, and has a great smell. The performance is more than adequate with the 5 cyl T5, and the steering and handling are excellent. Even with two bikes on the roof, the comfort on long road trips is great. The car has been reliable, with only routine maintenance required and one A/C component replaced under warranty. I couldn't be happier with my S60. I still love it, and although I sometimes wish I had the newer 4 cyl Drive-E for better mpg, everything else about this car is superb, so I'll stick with it. I get 24 mpg in mostly urban driving with 29-30 on highway trips.

I've been driving my S60 R-Design for just over a year now. The car's great styling really sets it apart from a standard A4 or 3-Series. The motor is smooth and powerful, with very little or no turbo lag. The interior is clean and has a German car feel with a little twist. I actually use the on-dash dial pad often, and it's not just a gimmick. All in all, it's a nice upgrade from my G37x, but it leaves me wanting just a little more. Maybe I'll consider the new Limited Edition R-Design if it isn't too expensive. By the way, the brakes are still horrible, and there are a couple of distinct rattles which are well hidden.

Hey there! Before making a purchase, it's always a good idea to shop around and compare prices. When looking at European cars, make sure to compare the same level of features to get the best value. In my opinion, this car offers the best combination of safety, price, and maintenance. Plus, it's super easy to replace the air filter!

Volvo is an excellent choice for safety! The turn radius is superb, and the city braking is a very useful back-up. The interior is also very comfortable, with dual climate zones, auto climate, and heated seats that work well. Although the fuel economy is not great, it is a small price to pay for the safety features. The only downside I have experienced is the Navigation system. However, overall, I love the car.

I was keeping an eye on the S60 since I needed a more 'corporate' car, coming out of my 2009 C30 which I've loved for the last 3 years. The S60 hit all the marks: it's upscale, gorgeous inside and out, fun to drive, and has a decent price/performance ratio. It's great to see that Consumer Reports and the auto trade press all like this car, and it scores well on the CR reliability ratings. I've had mine for about 2 weeks now, and I must say, this is the first time in about 30 years of purchasing cars that I've bought the same brand back-to-back. This car is definitely a hit for Volvo!

Although my experience with this car has been disappointing, I can confidently say that it has some areas that need improvement. The build quality, mechanical quality, and transmission programming could be better. However, I acknowledge that my experience may not be representative of everyone's experience with this car. It is important to consider multiple perspectives before making a final judgement.

We have owned 8 Volvo cars, but this one has been the worst by far. At 122k, I needed a replacement engine for my T5 out of nowhere, with no warning lights. However, I am confident that this will not affect our decision to continue buying Volvo cars in the future.

Although this vehicle is often referred to as a sedan, after owning it for over 2 years, I would classify it more as a coupe. While it does have 4 doors, the back seat and trunk space are quite limited. With only 12 cubic feet of space, even a simple trip to the grocery store requires items to be placed in the back seat for the ride home. Additionally, road trips with more than 2 people are not recommended due to the lack of space. However, the vehicle is great for those who prefer a sportier feel. While the fuel economy is not the best for a vehicle of this size, it is still a reliable option. The audio controls can be a bit confusing, but once you get used to them, they are easy to use. Although the resale value has decreased, it is important to note that this is not due to oversupply in the market. Overall, if you are looking for a family car, this may not be the best option. However, if you are looking for a sporty coupe, this vehicle is definitely worth considering.

The 2013 Volvo S60 T5 that I purchased two weeks ago experiences a brief engine misfire and rumble for about 5 to 10 seconds on cold mornings when the temperature is below 50 degrees. Despite having the car tested by a Volvo dealer, no issues were found. The ECM software was upgraded to version 36004-2.3 as suggested by Volvo support, but the problem still persists. However, I am confident that a solution will be found soon.

Let's start with the good stuff - the interior is really comfortable and the ride quality on the freeway is great. It's also fairly quiet on good road surfaces. However, there were a few issues that needed to be resolved. The A/C had a problem with a pressure relief valve, which took 4 visits to resolve even though it is a known issue. There was also a bad fuel pump causing hard starting from cold, which also took 4 visits to resolve even though it is a known issue. Additionally, there is a steering wobble at speeds around 40mph, which is considered 'normal' according to Volvo. The engine can be a bit jerky and surges in any gear and at any speed, which is also considered 'normal' according to Volvo. Finally, the transmission experiences a delay engaging first gear when pulling away from a stop, resulting in a jerk. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving this car.
