2008 Volvo S60 problems

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo since 2000.
The first generation (2000–2009) was launched in autumn of 2000 in order to replace the S70 and was based on the P2 platform. It had a similar designed estate version called Volvo V70 and a high performance engine and sports-oriented suspension version called S60 R. Styling cues were taken from the ECC concept car and the S80.
The second generation (2010–2018) was released in 2010 for the 2011 model year and has its own estate version, known as the Volvo V60.
The third generation joined the Volvo line-up in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is built on a shortened version of the Scalable Product Architecture platform, in America's first Volvo factory in Ridgeville, South Carolina. The US became the sole global source of the S60 sedan after production in China was phased out in early 2019.

Common 2008 Volvo S60 problems
The Volvo S60, a popular luxury vehicle, has been known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2008 model year. This article will discuss these issues in detail, based on complaints from actual owners.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are among the most common problems reported by Volvo S60 owners, particularly in models from 2001 to 2014. These problems can include hard shifts, long shift intervals between gears, or loss of transmission performance altogether. The check engine light may also illuminate, indicating the need for diagnosis and potential software updates.
- Suspension Problems: Used S60s, including the 2008 model, may experience problems with the suspension, such as worn-out shocks, struts, or bushings . These issues can cause excessive vibrations and noise, affecting the overall driving experience.
- Engine Problems: Some owners of used S60s, including the 2008 model, have reported issues with the engine, such as oil leaks, blown head gaskets, and problems with the timing belt . These issues can lead to costly repairs and potentially compromise the engine's performance and longevity.
- Interior and Exterior Wear and Tear: As with any used car, the interior and exterior of the vehicle may show signs of wear and tear, such as worn-out seats, scratches on the exterior, or cracked dashboard . These issues are not necessarily unique to the 2008 Volvo S60 but are common in used vehicles.
In conclusion, the 2008 Volvo S60 has several common problems, including electrical issues, transmission problems, suspension problems, engine problems, and interior and exterior wear and tear. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider having a mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchasing to identify any potential problems and to ensure that the vehicle has been properly maintained and has undergone regular servicing.
What is the common problem with Volvo S60?
If you are having performance problems with your S60, the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module) is known to get blocked by a carbon build up. The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor also gets a build up. Poor engine idling, bad starting and lack of power/acceleration are all symptoms of these issues.
Why not to buy Volvo S60?
In typical Volvo fashion, the ride is stiff. Handling is sound but unexceptional. The S60 is plagued with Volvo's unintuitive infotainment system, which requires too much swiping, tapping, and eyes-off-the-road time.
Why did Volvo discontinue the S60?
In the US, the XC40, XC60, and XC90 accounted for 75 percent of the brand's sales in June. Volvo's lineup in the UK now looks different. The automaker has removed the S60, V60, and V90 from its lineup, citing the growing demand for its SUVs as interest dwindles in its sedans and wagons.
Is Volvo S60 safe?
IIHS: The Volvo S60 earned a top score of "Good" in all crash tests and "Superior" in terms of Frontal Crash Protection to become a Top Safety Pick model.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-27
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV1RS592182
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My air bags malfunctioned when I was in a motor vehicle accident in this vehicle. We were hit in the front left side and both the drivers side and passenger airbags tried to deploy, but never deployed releasing a form of mist instead. This vehicle was totaled and towed away after the accident, but both me and the other person in the vehicles safety were put at risk due to this. We both flew forwards towards the dashboard/ into the steering wheel which could have resulted in much more severe injuries after the impact. The problem was not further looked into after the accident, but I just got this vehicle 2 years ago through a dealership. There were no warning lamps or symptoms of the failures before this collision occurred.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-30
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV1RS592182
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My vehicle was involved in a head on collison on 10-30-2021. My driver side air bag came out but had a hole in it while my passenger side airbags didn't come out at all.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-29
- VIN: YV1902FH2C2
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THERE IS AN AREA ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE DRIVERS SIDE WINDSHIELD ABOUT 5 INCHES TALL AND 14 INCHES LONG THAT DOES NOT HAVE CLEAR VISIBILITY WHEN IT GETS WET. THE MOISTURE DOES NOT WIPE AWAY WHEN THE WIPER BLADES WIPE THIS AREA. INSTEAD, THE MOISTURE REMAINS OBSTRUCTING THE VIEW UNTIL THE WIPER BLADE PASSES THE AREA AGAIN BLURRING THE AREA EVEN MORE. THIS VISUAL OBSTRUCTION IS POSITIONED DIRECTLY BETWEEN THE DRIVER'S EYES AND THE VIEW OUTSIDE THE WINDSHIELD. THIS PROBLEM ONLY APPEARS ON THE DRIVER SIDE NOT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE DEALER WAS SHOWN THE ISSUE AND AGREED THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING ODD BUT SAID THAT THEY HAVE SEEN THIS IN THE OTHER VOLVO S60S ON THEIR LOT SO THEY ACCEPTED THIS AS NORMAL. HOWEVER, IN AN EARNEST ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THE ISSUE, THE DEALER HAS CHANGED THE WIPER BLADES MANY TIMES BUT THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. THE DEALER CLEANED THE WINDSHIELD WITH WATER AND FINE STEEL WOOL. THIS DID NOT HELP. THEY CONTACTED VOLVO CORPORATE AND WERE TOLD TO CHANGE THE WIPER ARM. THIS DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE EITHER. WHEN THIS ISSUE WAS BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE VOLVO REGIONAL SERVICE MANAGER, HIS POSITION WAS THAT THIS WAS NOT AN ISSUE BECAUSE OTHER VOLVO S60 VEHICLES HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MECHANICAL FUNCTIONALITY OF THE WIPER SYSTEM. IT IS MY CONTENTION THAT THERE IS A SURFACE DEFECT WITH THIS WINDSHIELD WHICH IS CAUSING REDUCED VISIBILITY. AND I WOULD LIKE AN INVESTIGATION TO BEGIN IN AN EFFORT TO FIX A FLAW IN THESE ALREADY OTHERWISE VERY SAFE CARS.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-05
- VIN: YV1RS592482
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON THE FIST INCIDENT I WAS TALKING MY KIDS TO SCHOOL, DROPPED THEM OFF AND WHEN I STARTED TO ACCELERATE I GOT LOW ENGINE PERFORMANCE LIGHT AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON, THE CAR WOULD ONLY GO 5 MPH. THE VOLVO DEALER FIXED IT NO CHARGE AND IT WAS OK FOR A WHILE. NEXT INCIDENT MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AND THE CAR STALLED AND SAID THE SAME THING REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE. FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS AFTER THAT ITS BEEN STALLING ROUGH IDLE, REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE. WE TOOK IT TO VOLVO OF EL PASO ON AIRWAY BLVD 915 410-3254 AND THEY SAID THE EMT WAS BAD AND NEEDED REPLACED FOR $1050.00. I READ ABOUT THIS BEING A CONTINUED ISSUE AND SEEMS LIKE IT WAS NEVER REALLY FIXED SO THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL AND SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR SOMETHING FAULTY, ITS DANGEROUS.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-01
- VIN: YV1RS592282
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HEADING TO SAN DIEGO DURING EVENING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THE TRAFFIC HAD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND AS TRAFFIC WAS STARTING AGAIN AS I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR THE CAR ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER. THERE WERE NO DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHTS OR INDICATORS TO GIVE US ANY INFORMATION ON WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE CAR. I ONLY KNEW THAT I HAD NO ENGINE POWER. THE GASOLINE GAUGE SHOWED THAT I HAD ABOUT HALF A TANK OF GAS LEFT. WE TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE A COUPLE OF TIME. THE ENGINE WOULD SPUTTER AND THEN DIE. FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN THE SLOWER RIGHT HAND LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL SAFELY OFF TO THE SHOULDER. IF I HAD BEEN THE FASTER FREEWAY LANES, WITH THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER, WE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SAFE AND THE RESULTS MAY HAVE BEEN VERY TRAGIC! WE WERE TOWED TO A VOLVO DEALER IN CARLSBAD, CALIFORNIA. THERE THE DEALER FOUND THAT THE CAR HAS A FAULTY FUEL PUMP AND SENSORS. WITH THE FAULTY SENSOR, WHILE THE GASOLINE TANK APPEARED ON THE DISPLAY GAUGE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TO BE HALF FULL, THE TANK WAS ACTUALLY ALMOST EMPTY. CURRENTLY, (AS OF APRIL 6,2015) THE CAR IS STILL WITH THE VOLVO DEALER WAITING FOR THE PART TO ARRIVE FROM THE EAST COAST. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS IS A RELATIVELY NEW CAR - 2008 MODEL WITH LOW MILEAGE. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND THE SENSORS ARE DEFECTIVE PARTS FOR THIS MODEL CAR. I APPRECIATE ANY ASSISTANCE OR ADVICE YOU CAN PROVIDE ME ON THIS ISSUE. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-07-14
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY CAR SEEMS TO BE STALLING. I TALKED TO SEVERAL MECHANICS AND THEY SAID IT MAY BE THE THROTTLE. THE CAR SEEMS TO STALL AS I ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE. AFTER I CONTINUE TO ACCELERATE IT DOES IMPROVE, BUT ONCE I STOP OR NEED TO REDUCE MY SPEED AS I BEGIN TO RE-ACCELERATE IT SEEMS SLUGGISH. FROM MY UNDERSTANDING THIS MAY BE AN ISSUE WITH THE THROTTLE. I DON'T LET MY CAR IDLE UNLESS I AM STOPPED IN TRAFFIC AND DON'T ACCELERATE FORCEFULLY. I WILL BE TAKING IT IN FOR SERVICING SOON AS WAS TOLD THERE WAS A THROTTLE ISSUE WITH THE VOLVOS. I AM JUST NOT SURE IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-05-30
- VIN: YV1RS592282
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED. AFTER RESTARTING THE ENGINE THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE STALLED A SECOND TIME WHILE THE CONTACT WAS SITTING AT A TRAFFIC STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE MOTOR THROTTLE WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,000.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-11-06
- Crash: 1
- VIN: YV1RS592782
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: ON THE ABOVE DATE I STARTED MY VEHICLE AND PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE TO PULL OUT OF PARKING SPACE. IMMEDIATELY AFTER RELEASING MY FOOT FROM THE BRAKE AND BEFORE TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR ACCELERATED IN REVERSE SO FAST THAT I BOUNCED OFF A CEMENT POLE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARKING LOT. THE FORCE WAS SO GREAT THAT THE VEHICLE BOUNCED THREE TIMES BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT WHICH I DID BY APPLYING THE BRAKE AND BEING BLOCKED BY THE POLE. AFTER I CAME TO A STOP I REALIZED THAT IT WAS IN FACT THE POLE THAT HAD STOPPED MY CAR. I WAS ALSO BLOCKING THE PARKING LOT SO I PUT MY FOOT BACK ON BRAKE AND PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE TO GET OUT OF WAY OF OTHER MOTORISTS AND TO ASSESS DAMAGE TO THE REAR OF MY VEHICLE. AT THIS POINT, TO MY SURPRISE, AS I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND BEFORE I COULD TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR, THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING IN DRIVE AS IT HAD DONE IN REVERSE AND I WENT HURLING TOWARD A VERY BUSY FOUR LANE STREET. I APPLIED FOOT BRAKE AND PULLED EMERGENCY BRAKE AND WAS STILL NOT ABLE TO STOP DUE TO THE FORCE OF ACCELERATION. THANKFULLY I HIT THE CEMENT PARKING MARKER AND A DIVIDER WHICH RAISED MY CAR OFF GROUND SO THAT THE FRONT WHEELS WE IN THE AIR. NEVER ONCE DID MY FOOT TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR OF THE VEHICLE NOR WAS THEIR ANYTHING ELSE TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR. *TR

THE FAILURE OCCURRED THREE TIMES, RESULTING IN A MINOR CRASH ON ONE OCCASION, WHICH A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 22,000.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-03-31
- VIN: YV1RS592X82
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
- Summary: I HAVE A 2008 VOLVO S60 2.5 CAR. THE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT HAS TWO CLIPS IN THE FLOOR TO SECURE IT, BUT WILL NOT REMAIN IN PLACE. IT HAS COME LOOSE MULTIPLE TIMES AND SLIDES UNDER THE GAS PEDAL. I NOTICE IT ONLY WHEN I HAVE DIFFICULTY/AM UNABLE TO DEPRESS THE GAS PEDAL. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF MY DEAL VOLVO OF CALABASAS IN LATE MARCH 2010. THEY STATED THAT THE CLIPS WERE PROPERLY INSTALLED. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY THEREAFTER THE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT AGAIN CAME LOOSE AND AGAIN BECAME LODGED UNDER THE GAS PEDAL, PREVENTING IT FROM OPERATING PROPERLY. IF THE RETENTION CLIPS ARE PROPERLY INSTALLED, THEN I AM CONCERNED THAT THE DESIGN MAY BE DEFECTIVE. NO INJURY OR ACCIDENT HAS OCCURRED, BUT I WANT THE NHTSA TO BE AWARE OF THIS POTENTIAL ISSUE. *TR

I've been driving my S60 AWD since July of 2007 and it's been a reliable companion on my bi-weekly trips from northern New England to New York City. I haven't paid close attention to my fuel economy, but it seems fine. The seats are still comfortable and the electronics are still in good working order. The car has handled very well in snow and sleet conditions, especially when I engage the W option. The trunk storage is pretty good, but the rear seats don't have a lot of legroom for adults. When I was considering the BMW 3 Series, the S60, and the Saab 9-3, I'm glad I chose the S60. It's held up well and I'm still very happy with my decision.
-
Amazing car! It's incredibly quick, has amazing exterior and interior looks, an amazing sound system, beautiful gauges, powerful brakes, sharp rims, a soft and easy clutch, and the AWD system definitely keeps the car grounded. It's a huge bargain for its price compared to its counterparts. If you have the chance, definitely go for overseas delivery. Nothing beats zipping by BMWs on the autobahn!

I purchased my 2007 Volvo S60 R used with 85k miles on it. Since then, I have driven it for over 150k miles and I am happy to report that I have not had a single issue with the car. I make sure to give it a scheduled oil change every 5k miles and have it undergo regular maintenance at 120k miles. I take great care of my car, but I also enjoy having fun in it. The DTSC system combined with AWD makes driving on back country roads an absolute blast. This car has been with me since I was 16 and it has held up better than I could have ever imagined. Recently, I had the car undergo a full 130 point inspection and it passed with flying colors. My mechanic is confident that I will be able to drive this car for up to 300k miles. While I do have one complaint about the turn radius, which is about the same as a truck, overall it is a fantastic car. I am excited to see what the future holds for this car and for the other Volvos that I will be purchasing.

The seats in this car are incredibly comfortable and the layout of the dash is very user-friendly and ergonomic. The heated seats were excellent and the sound system (HU650) sounds superb. Although some parts are a bit flimsy and it rattles too much, it is a very quiet car. It could be a smoother ride and has too much curb weight when taking corners. However, it is a very fast car and once it reaches about 35 mph, it accelerates very smoothly. The turbo is amazing and makes passing cars on the highway a pleasure. It is an excellent car and could handle just a bit better.

I am so glad to hear that you are still impressed and pleased with your purchase after a year! Your road trips from MA to VA sound like quite the adventure, and it's impressive that you were able to achieve 31MPG. The driving position sounds incredibly comfortable, and it's great to hear that the climate, seating, interior quality, and reliability have all been excellent. It's wonderful that the engine purrs at night, too! It's great that your service visits have been minimal, with only indicator bulbs needing to be changed. Overall, it sounds like you made an excellent choice and I'm happy for you!

My company provided me with an S60. Although it may not be my first choice if I were spending my own money, I have found it to be a comfortable highway car with great straight-line acceleration. However, I have noticed that the S60 does not handle curves and corners as well due to its weight and vague steering, which can be a bit unsettling. Despite these issues, I have only experienced minor problems such as a loose passenger side door seal, which was fixed during an oil change service, and a rattle near the passenger door frame that I have been unable to locate. I have also found that the passenger seat can be uncomfortable on long trips due to its awkward orientation within the car.

When I first bought this car, I really liked it. However, I have come to regret my purchase. It seems to be too small for a person of average size, and the back seat is not spacious enough for even a child. The trunk space is also not very practical. Although it is marketed as a sport sedan, it does not quite live up to that expectation. Additionally, the gas mileage is poor for a car of its size and with only 5 cylinders. Unfortunately, the reliability of the car is also suspect. I have had to take it to the dealership 4 times in the past 4 months for two intermittent problems, one with the antilock brakes and the other with the radio. The second problem has yet to be resolved, and the dealer has not been able to fix it without keeping the car for a week at a time. In conclusion, I would advise against making the same mistake I did and instead consider purchasing a Japanese car.

Hi there, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Volvo car. Unfortunately, after only 2,000 miles, my transmission stopped working. I haven't received any explanation or repair yet, which is disappointing. I was hoping for better from Volvo. Additionally, I've noticed that the handling on my old VW Passat was much better. Thank you for your time.
Anderson Emard 2024-10-11
The MPG is slightly lower than the 04 V70 2.5t wagon, but it did improve a bit with new tires. I've had it for about 2 years and find the front seats to be very comfortable. However, it doesn't drive quite as smoothly as the older wagon.
Elbert Jenkins 2024-06-06
The gas filler cap has been leaking since the first full tank of gas, but I am confident that the service team will be able to resolve the issue. Additionally, the seat belt locks can make it difficult to lean forward and check for oncoming traffic, but I am confident that this can be addressed as well. While there may be some areas for improvement in terms of overall quality and value, I am confident that this car has the potential to meet my needs. However, I understand that everyone has different preferences and experiences, and I respect the writer's opinion about their previous car.
