Toyota Avalon problems

The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common Toyota Avalon problems
Based on complaints from Toyota Avalon owners, several common problems have been reported with these cars:
- Cracked Dashboards: Many Toyota Avalon models, including those from 1995-2010 and 2012, have experienced issues with cracked dashboards. Owners have reported that their dashboards would crack, leading to aesthetic and potentially functional concerns.
- Transmission Issues: Owners of various Avalon models, such as those from 1995-1998, 2000-2007, 2009, and 2015, have faced transmission problems. These issues manifest as difficulties in shifting correctly, hesitation when shifting gears at low speeds, and even sudden jerking or staying in neutral while driving.
- Misfiring Engine: Avalon owners from 1995-2010 and 2012 have reported instances of misfiring engines. This issue causes the vehicle to hesitate and jerk, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing these coils can incur costs ranging from $5 to $50 plus labor.
- Peeling Paint: A common complaint, especially with the 2011 Avalon model, is peeling paint. Drivers have observed paint bubbling up and peeling, particularly on the roof and areas between the windshield and sunroof, affecting the car's appearance.
- Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Many 2014 Avalon owners have raised concerns about sudden unintended acceleration. This issue causes the car to accelerate without driver input, suspected to be related to electronic faults leading to throttle engagement without pressing the gas pedal.
- Fuel Leaks: Some Avalon models have been prone to fuel leaks, posing safety risks and potential fire hazards. This problem requires immediate attention and repair to ensure the vehicle's safety and performance.
These issues highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering purchasing a Toyota Avalon, as certain model years have shown a higher incidence of these common problems reported by owners.

Great therapy for aching back! This car is very agile and has acceleration that will surprise you - it's even quicker than my Porsche 912. It would be great to have a soundproof window barrier between the driver compartment and the rear seat when my grandchildren are back there!

This car is truly impressive! I want to share some unique insights about it that haven't been mentioned yet. When it comes to handling and steering, despite its weight, this car can still corner surprisingly well. The steering response is tight yet light, making it a pleasure to drive. I even upsized my rims, which has improved my handling even more. As for reliability, I'm a stickler for preventative maintenance and follow the book to the 'T'. However, this car has destroyed my OCD around maintenance. Even after 90k miles, I could have easily gone to 150k or even 200k without replacing any components. I recently did the timing belt and other related parts, and when I asked for my old parts to take a look at wear, they looked new! I'm confident that I won't have to replace any of those components ever again for the life of this vehicle. I've been using Denso parts, which are OEM spec, and full synthetic oil for the engine, which runs better and prevents sludge. I don't drive like a grandpa either, despite this car's image. I'm a 27-year-old male, and this car suits me perfectly. Check out the Style section for more on that.Don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that you prolong the recommended service intervals. However, it is worth noting that Toyota over-specs, which is great news for us consumers. In fact, my only unscheduled maintenance was an O2 sensor back at 40-50k miles. When it comes to style, looks, fit, and finish, this car boasts some nice, thick, high-quality paint. Despite being 16 years old, it still looks mostly new, with just a few chips and dings. The leather is also in tip-top shape, and I try to clean and condition it a few times a year. However, it's worth noting that without this, it would still be in great condition. I recently upgraded the rims to 18”, and it has completely transformed the look of the vehicle. It now has a sporty appearance, similar to the Lexus IS series from the same generation, without compromising on comfort. Don't just take my word for it, take a look at the pictures and see for yourself: http://imgur.com/a/1RS2R

I purchased my Avalon from a kind gentleman who had meticulously kept every record for the past 10 years. He had kept track of every oil change, tire change, new part purchase, and everything else! The car drove like new, so I decided to buy it from him. I then drove 2000 miles across Canada, and the car didn't give me any trouble at all. Even when I was driving up and over the Rocky Mountains, fully loaded with all my stuff and three cats, Grandpa (as I affectionately call it) took it like a champ. I was getting around 8 L/100km or 29 MPG, which was great! Before buying the car, I did a lot of research and found out that while some of them have sludge engine oil problems, they are generally bulletproof. Many Avalons are for sale with over 300K miles, and some even have over 400K miles! If you keep up with oil and fluid changes, get new plugs every 100K miles, and drive it even half decently nice, this car will give you thousands of problem-free miles. As for comfort, I can honestly say that it was more comfortable than my brand new Tacoma or my partner's 2019 Impreza. As soon as you get in this car, you can feel that it was made for driver comfort. It is not made for fast cornering, but it is great for long drives. I had read how great the visibility was in this car, but I was still surprised by how few and small the blind spots were. I feel so confident on the highway passing and pulling in and out of lanes because of this. I am probably slightly younger than most people who own this car at 38, but if you want comfort, reliability, and safety, considering the age of the vehicle, you cannot go wrong with the Avalon.

This is a really good vehicle! It has all the latest features and safety controls of modern cars today. The seats are comfortable and adjust well, although the suede in place of leather for the seats is still up for debate. The front grill may be a little overbearing, but it does make it distinctive and sets it apart from the normal cookie-cutter designs of today. I have the touring model, so I can adjust the ride and steering dynamics. The ride and engine are both very good. The transmission can be a little indecisive at lower speeds, but it would be nice if Toyota updated the software for this. I did have an electrical ignition glitch after 6 weeks of delivery, which acted like a bad battery connection. I'm not sure what it was, but the local service department took care of the issue. Overall, I would definitely buy this vehicle again!

This is my third Avalon. You can't beat the ride and value. I've never owned any other car that I was so enamored with that I insisted on having another one. I love it.

This car has had several issues since it was purchased new, including transmission leaks at 60k and the need to replace all steering components before 100k. Additionally, the power steering pump had to be replaced twice. Another issue is the significant tire wear, with even top-rated tires wearing out in just 20k miles. These problems are disappointing, especially considering the high cost of the car.
Mack Kuhic 2025-02-11
Vehicle year: 2015
The car's performance is good, but the quality of the interior materials could be improved. Additionally, the radio has a tendency to reset itself during a ride, which can be frustrating. There is also some water leakage when the door is open, which is not ideal. The car's headroom is somewhat limited, but it is still comfortable to drive. At higher speeds, such as on the interstate, there is some wind noise that can be noticeable. Overall, while I had a great experience with past Avalon models, I have noticed a decline in quality with the newer trims. As a customer, I hope to see improvements in the future.

At around 113000 miles, there may be oil gel/sludge in the engine below the valves. At 131340 miles, I noticed dried oil in the form of coffee grinds in the internal oil screen that filters the oil inside the oil pan cover. If the oil light comes on at 131340 miles, please have it towed to your closest dealer to avoid paying for a new engine. Please inform the Service Manager that no one should drive it or let it run at idle, as this could cause major internal engine damage. Unfortunately, I was not notified by the manufacturer of a recall for sludge. If you notice smoking, it could be a sign of an oil gel problem, which is covered by the manufacturer. At 131300 miles, I changed the front springs.

Our 2006 Toyota Avalon with 92k miles was diagnosed with a timing cover oil leak at my local Toyota dealership. The cost to repair was $1950. This problem is very common in the 3rd generation Avalons, as Toyota has issued service bulletins on this issue. As the original owner, we have taken great care of the car, keeping it garage-kept and servicing it at our local dealership every 5K miles. Despite this, we were disappointed to encounter such a costly repair cost due to a defective sealant on the timing cover. However, we remain confident in Toyota's long history of dependability and recognize that they have acknowledged this issue. While we did contact Toyota customer service to express our concerns, we understand that the car is now out of warranty and we have continued to use it without any issues. We appreciate Toyota's commitment to quality and look forward to continued reliability from our Avalon.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2009 Avalon. Although it only has 3000 miles on it, I've decided not to drive it anymore due to some safety concerns. Unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with the brakes, which has caused a few accidents and some damage to the car. Despite taking it to Toyota dealers, they haven't been able to find a problem. My husband and brother have also experienced the same issue, but the dealers say that no one else has reported anything similar. I just wanted to share my experience and let you know that I've decided not to drive the car anymore. Stay safe!
