2014 Toyota Avalon problems

The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-27
- VIN: 4T1BD1EB5EU

- Summary: The rear window retractable sun visor motor/gears have failed. When this happens, it leaves the sun visor in the up position in the rear window at all times. This makes it very, very, hard to see anything out the rear window at night, also pretty hard when it's raining or cloudy out. I understand this has happened to quite a lot of these cars and is a VERY expensive repair cost. I feel this is hazard that Toyota should bear the cost of fixing, because of the sheer amount of vehicles this has happened. Thank you for keeping us all informed and safe from these types of things!

I was able to get off the road safely although the brakes did not feel normal. Had the car towed to Capitol Toyota in San Jose the following morning for repair. They diagnosed the problem as a failure in the Master Cylinder Booster Unit and replaced it. Note: the attached invoice misstates the issue as "check engine light" which is incorrect.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-25
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB0EU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My Avalon is trying to kill me. I promise I have done nothing wrong! When going down the highway at 85mph I have had people cut in front of me. When pushing on the brakes to avoid collision, the brakes lock up and do not release for about 5 seconds. Naturally, this is quite unnerving for myself, passengers as cars that scatter around me when the Avalon takes control --- slamming on the brakes --- and wont hand control back until it has caused quite a mess. This has happened three times now and no one can tell me what is wrong. I am told to get a brake job at the Toyota dealership even though the pads still have plenty of life.

- VIN: 4T1BD1EB3EU
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: FROM THE TIME FRAME OF 2017 TIL THE PRESENT, THE HEADLAMPS ON THE VEHICLE WOULD BURN OUT FOR NO APPARENT REASON. EACH TIME I REPLACE THEM, THEY WOULD LAST FOR ABOUT 4 TO 6 MONTHS AND THEN THEY WOULD BURN OUT AGAIN. SOMETIMES EITHER ONE WOULD BURN, LEFT OR RIGHT, AND TWICE I'VE HAD BOTH GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS CAUSING THE HEAD LAMPS TO BURN OUT. I'VE REPLACED THEM EACH TIME, AND IN COUNTING I HAVE REPLACED THEM AT LEAST 10 TIMES SINCE 2017. THIS IS TOTALLY UNUSUAL COMPARED TO MY OTHER TWO CARS WHERE I'VE NEVER ONCE HAD TO REPLACE THE HEADLAMPS ON THESE. IT HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN AND OTHER TIMES WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON BEFORE DRIVING. TODAY (MARCH 1, 2021) IS HAS HAPPENED AGAIN, AND THIS TIME THE DRIVER SIDE LAMP WENT OUT FOR NO APPARENT REASON.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: 4T1BD1EB0EU
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE 95000 MILES ON MY TOYOTA AVALON LIMITED HYBRID. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD IT JUST QUIT - DEAD STOP (VERY DANGEROUS) AND, HAD IT NOT BEEN A HYBRID, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET IT OFF OF THE INTERSTATE. TURNS OUT THAT THE FUEL PUMP STOPPED WORKING WITH NO WARNING. MY LAST AVALON WENT ALMOST 300,000 MILES ON THE SAME FUEL PUMP. THE PUMP, IN MY OPINION, IS FAULTY BUT OUT OF WARRANTY. TOYOTA IS CHARGING OVER $1,000 TO FIX IT. I TRIED TO GET TOYOTA MANAGEMENT CONTACT INFORMATION (DISTRICT MGR.) FROM THE DEALERSHIP BUT THEY WOULD NOT SUPPLY IT IN ORDER FOR ME TO DRAW ATTENTION TO TOYOTA OF THE PREMATURE FAILURE OF A KEY COMPONENT OF THE CAR. I CALLED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS, GOT THE SAME RESPONSE AND FELT LIKE THEY COULD CARE LESS THAT THERE MAY BE A DEFICIENCY IN THEIR COMPONENTS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE SEEN ONLINE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS EARLY FAILURE OF THE FUEL PUMP. TOYOTA NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM AND THEY NEED TO ISSUE A TSB ON IT AND PERFORM THE WORK AT COST VS MAKING MONEY ON SOMETHING THAT COULD KILL ME AND MY FAMILY MEMBERS. I STILL CAN GET OVER THEIR LACK OF CONCERN.

I noticed a few issues with my car that I would like to address. Firstly, the interior, including the door panels and dashboard, tends to squeak quite a bit, which I find to be unacceptable for a car of this type. While it is barely noticeable during the day due to outside ambient noise, it becomes much more noticeable at night and can be quite distracting. Additionally, the suspension is quite soft and doesn't handle bumps very well. While the car is comfortable to ride in, it lacks handling power. I also found that the 9-speaker sound system doesn't sound as good as I expected, and the sound seems to be coming from only one dashboard speaker. Finally, the telescopic steering wheel doesn't pull out far enough, which may be an issue for taller drivers. If you're over 6 feet tall, you may find that your hands are straight.

I've owned the Avalon Limited for just over a year and I'm very pleased with its performance, comfort, and economy. Although there are a few minor annoyances that all cars have, such as expensive updates to the NAV and slightly more road noise than expected for a car of this class, the high points of this full-size sedan make up for it. The ride is both firm and comfortable, the interior is exceptional in quality, the sound system is of very high quality, and the engine is powerful. The effortless shifting of the transmission is smooth and flawless, and the MPG in a full-size car with 268 HP is unbeatable. I purchased the vehicle used with 8K miles on it at a substantial discount to the sticker price, and I feel I received a great value for a car I'll drive for at least 10 years. The reliability of a Toyota is accurately stated by biased and unbiased authorities alike. Suffice to say, I'm very happy with the purchase and looking forward to driving this car for a long time. *Update: I've now owned the car for 2 years (over 10,000 miles driven) and could not be happier with the purchase. I've experienced no mechanical issues, and the car is as good as the day I brought it home. Great job on the redesign and continued reliability, Toyota! I'd gladly buy it again today! Update: I've now owned the car for 3 years, and my initial review was accurate. The car's interface with the phone/NAV has improved, and the mileage is very good at 28.5. The handling of the vehicle is that of a sports car, and the ride is a bit rough for a luxury car but very quiet and smooth. I'd buy the car again without a thought. Update: I’ve now owned the car for over 4 1/2 years and have nearly 52,000 miles on it. I’m still very happy with the vehicle; it has been extremely reliable with no mechanical breakdowns. There is no rattling or shaking, and everything is still solid. The car performs extremely well.I am delighted to share my experience with the Avalon. In my 35 years of owning cars, this has been the best one yet. The vehicle has only required scheduled preventative maintenance, including tires, and has never had any mechanical issues or breakdowns. The only anomaly I have noticed is that the rear window shade sometimes extends to the up position un-commanded when the car is parked outside in the heat. However, this is a minor issue and does not affect my overall satisfaction with the car. I am eagerly awaiting the 2022 version and considering purchasing it next year. After owning the Avalon for nearly 7 years and driving over 71,000 miles, I am still very happy with my purchase. Although the front of the vehicle has many rock/paint chips, which will require repainting, this is a minor complaint and does not detract from the car's overall performance. I have looked at many Gen 4 Avalon's and found that very few have the same anomaly. In conclusion, I would highly recommend the Avalon to anyone looking for a reliable and enjoyable driving experience.

I really enjoy a quiet car, and the Avalon Limited definitely delivers on that front. It's also incredibly smooth and has a sporty feel to it. One of the things I appreciate about it is that it runs on regular gas.

I have a 2014 Avalon Limited in Parisian Night Pearl, which rides like a Lexus as I mentioned in my previous review. Now that I've had it for 7 months, I'd like to explain my star ratings for each section. I deducted one star from Performance due to understeer when driving. Comfort lost a star because the front seats show a lot of wear from use, even though I only drive 10k miles a year or less. Interior also lost a star because the silver liner around the cup holders is coming apart and tearing off. Safety lost a star because the car loses traction with tires at 5/32 and still have treadwear on tires, so the car only performs well with new tires, which means new tires every 4 years. This is not good for winter weather or rain. Technology lost 2 stars due to the climate control changing on its own at times when you restart the car. Also, the car cabin air filter has been replaced a lot due to the smell of the HVAC. Toyota has not yet issued a recall on the EVAP System drain, so the smell is not the cabin air filter. Reliability lost a star because the engine had to have the throttle body serviced after the main battery replacement. The car had issues with stalling after the new battery, and then had to have the fuel injectors serviced to help with MPGs. Other than that, there were no major issues, and I will have these services again at 90k miles. Value lost a star because the fuel economy has not met the factory set amounts with all mixed driving and highway. I do recommend service intervals and make sure my car runs like new. The next service is at 62k with an oil change. The reason I got the car at 52k with an oil change.

I've been the proud owner of a 2014 Avalon Touring for about two years now. Previously, I owned a 2012 Camry SE V6 which was awesome, but I fell in love with the new design of the Avalon in 2013. When I was able to trade it in without being upside down on the Camry, I did. It took a bit of effort to find the right dealer, but I finally made it work. The 2014 Avalon Touring cost me $33K plus tax and tag, which was only a $7K difference from my $26K Camry with all the toys. It was an absolute steal! The ride is much better than the Camry and I love the upscale interior design. It's quick off the line and a great vehicle to drive on the Turn Pike. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and still in love with it after two years. I am considering getting a 2016 Limited, but the price will have to be right for me to give up my 2014 Touring. I typically like to drive a new car every two years or so, but this Touring is a wonderful car. If I can make my deal, I'll trade it in, but if not, I'll wait another year. I've heard that Toyota is redesigning the Avalon in 2017.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Avalon. It was actually my second Avalon, as I previously owned a 2008 model that I was very happy with. I decided to trade it in for the 2014 model because of the great reviews and improvements in body and performance. I always took great care of my car, garage parking it and taking it to the dealer every 5000 miles for service, including an oil change with synthetic oil every 5000 miles instead of 10000 miles. However, after around 4 and a half years, my wife discovered that the headliner was hanging down behind the sunroof. I took it to the dealer and had to pay over $2000 for a new headliner and installation. I'm not sure what caused this issue. The original battery lasted 5 years, and I replaced it in October 2018. After that, we noticed that the battery would be totally dead after taking a trip (using my truck) and letting the car sit in the garage for 7-10 days. I took it to the dealer and had a parasitic drain test done, which showed nothing. When I went out of town for a trip (using my truck), I disconnected the battery to see what would happen, and the battery had a full charge when I returned (100% charge when I left, 90% when I returned). I took the car to Toyota, and they checked out the Toyota 84-month battery and said it was fine. My wife drove the car to the dentist on a Tuesday, and we didn't drive the car for the rest of the week (which was unusual), and the battery was dead (2.7 volts on Sunday morning). I took the car in, and they checked the battery and said it was fine, and the drain test was negative, so that ruled out any problems. I purchased a new Interstate battery on a Monday, drove the car on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it sat in the garage for 3 days, and the new battery was dead on Sunday morning. I contacted the service manager and brought the car in for a week to check. They called me on Friday and informed me that the car started every morning. I left it until the following Tuesday after Labor Day, and the car started (I wonder if starting every day reset something). They explained to me again that the battery will lose power if left sitting and recommended a battery tender. This car is driven pretty much daily, except when I take my truck for vacation to haul things. Thank you for listening to my story!I hope this message finds you well. I understand the importance of having a reliable car, especially when dealing with medical issues. I have been a loyal Toyota owner since October 1976, but recently purchased a new Honda for myself. I paid $44,000 for my new Avalon. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

The 2014 Avalon had an initial sticker price of $38,500. However, its current trade-in value is $20,000. Despite being a loyal Toyota customer and having purchased five Toyota products, I am disappointed with the Avalon's depreciation. After just one year, the car's value had decreased so much that I was unable to trade it in. Additionally, the side assist feature has not worked despite three attempts by the dealer to fix it. While I am dissatisfied with my experience, I remain confident in Toyota's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Luckily, I only have one more year left on my two-year lease. While my experience with Toyota hasn't been the best, I'm grateful for the time I've had with them. The Entune system was great at first, but recent updates have made it unreliable and almost useless. Bluetooth constantly disconnects and reconnects, which can be frustrating when making calls or streaming music. Text messages also rarely download since the software updates. Navigation can be cumbersome, and the voice recognition search function is not very effective. The touch controls can be activated by mistake if you're not careful, and the climate display can be difficult to read in sunlight. However, the exterior styling is appealing, and the ride and handling are acceptable for my driving style. I appreciate the active backup camera system, but I would like some front sensors as well. The lane change sensors work well, although there is no audible warning like my previous car. Overall, I'm looking forward to exploring other options after my lease is up.

My Avalon has been with me for 5 1/2 years and has clocked 88,000 miles. Despite the hard front seats, I have not had any other repairs done to the car. When I encountered a defect in the sunroof, I took it to my Toyota dealer and they confirmed that it was caused by improper installation during manufacturing. The repair cost me $2,000, but I was able to negotiate with Toyota Headquarters and they agreed to pay for 50% of the repairs. The issue was resolved by installing a shim kit that required placing a shim at each weld in the sunroof. Since then, I have not had any further issues with the sunroof. Although the suspension system in this year's car is a little too stiff, the ride is still comfortable on most roads.

This Avalon has a design flaw that causes a blinding glare when driving in the sunlight due to the chrome trim around the controls, air conditioner vents, and doors. While I have always been pleased with my previous Toyota vehicles, this issue has been disappointing. I have reached out to Toyota and AutoNation with solutions, but have not yet received any responses. Before making a purchase, I recommend searching the internet for information on the Avalon glare problem. It's something I wish I had known before purchasing.
