2006 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

THE DANGER IS THAT THE CAR WILL ROLL AND COULD RUN OVER SOMEONE OR INTO TRAFFIC AND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY. MY HUSBAND AND I ALWAYS REMINDED EACH OTHER TO PUT THE CAR IN PARK, BUT HE IS NO LONGER WITH ME AND RECENTLY I STARTED TO GET OUT OF THE CAR AND IT WAS ON A SLIGHT INCLINE AND IT STARTED ROLLING WHILE I WAS GETTING OUT. I HAVE COMPLAINED IN THE PAST TO TOYOTA, BUT THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE ME. A RECENT COMPLAINT BROUGHT THE ANSWER THAT THE 36000 MILE WARRANTY DOESN'T APPLY TO THE REPAIR. I UNDERSTAND THAT, BUT THIS IS EVIDENTLY A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH AVALONS THAT TOYOTA HAS REFUSED TO ADDRESS, OR MY 2006 WOULDN'T HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WE HAVE ALMOST ALWAYS BOUGHT USED CARS AND TRUCKS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE THAT WOULD ALLOW THE KEY TO BE REMOVED WITHOUT BEING IN PARK. YOU ASK FOR A SPECIFIC DATE AT THE END OF THIS "STEP". IT IS ONGOING SO I HAVE JUST PUT YESTERDAYS DATE. THE CAR WAS A GIFT IN SEPTEMBER OF 2014.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-07
- VIN: 4T1BK36B86U
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: ON JUNE 7, 2019, I WAS DRIVING THE AVALON, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON CITY STREET. WITH THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKES, I WAS TRAUMATIZED AND DID MY BEST TO GUIDE THE VEHICLE TO SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED HOME AND HOOKED UP TO A CODE READER, WHICH YIELDED CODES P0345, P0300, P0302, P0304, P0306. WE DID FURTHER DIAGNOSTICS AND DISCOVERED THE 3 BOLTS THAT HOLD THE VARIABLE-VALVE TIMING (VVT) GEAR TO THE INTAKE CAMSHAFT CAME LOOSE, THESE BOLTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE TEMPER-RESISTANT AND NEVER BE REMOVED WHICH LED ME TO BELIEVE THE RESULT OF ENGINE DYING IS CAUSED BY SERIOUS MANUFACTURING AND DESIGN DEFECTS. PLEASE REFER TO ATTACHED THREE PICTURES SHOWING 3 BOLTS LAYING NEXT TO VVT GEAR, VVT GEAR LOOSELY HELD ON AND THE VIBRATION OF BOLT LEFT CUTTING MARK ON THE GEAR, AND ALL INTAKE CAM ROCKERS FALLING OUT. I DID MORE RESEARCH AND CONCLUDED THE ROOT CAUSE OF ENGINE STOPPED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN IN OUR AVALON IS IDENTICAL TO TOYOTA SAFETY RECALL 13V-395 IN LEXUS VEHICLES 2006 TO 2011. PLEASE FIND ATTACHED TWO DOCUMENTS, RCRIT-13V395-3180.PDF ON RECENT RECALL FOR TOYOTA SAFETY RECALL 13V-395, RCDNN-13V395-1839.PDF ON DEFECT INFORMATION REPORT FROM TOYOTA TO NHTSA ON LEXUS INTAKE-SIDE VARIABLE-VALVE TIMING (VVT) SYSTEM PART 573. ON JUNE 27, 2019, I CALLED STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA AND TOYOTA HQ AND LOGGED CASE [XXX]. I WAS INFORMED BY TOYOTA THERE'S NO RECALL FOR AVALON WITH THE VIN, AND THE VEHICLE HAD NO FACTORY WARRANTY (CURRENTLY 153K MILES), AND NO EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH ENGINE STALL FOR AVALON. AS A RESULT, WE NEED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE IN OUR OWN EXPENSE WHICH REQUIRES ENGINE REBUILT AS ENGINE STALL HAS CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. I WAS APPALLED BY TOYOTA FOR LACK OF INITIATION TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY RISK IN OUR AVALON AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION IN THIS MATTER. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TT
TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-27
- VIN: 4T1BK36B86U
- Components: TIRES,WHEELS
- Summary: ---BUYERS BEWARE.--- TIRES PURCHASED: 215/55R-17 CONTINENTAL PURECONTACT LS SL PURCHASED THESE TIRES ON TIRE RACK AND HAD THEM PROFESSIONAL PLACED ON BY FIRESTONE PERSONNEL (APPROPRIATE TIRE PRESSURE CHECKED). IN JUST A LITTLE OVER A MONTH, LESS THAN 100 MILES, AND WITHOUT ANY TRAUMA (NO POTHOLES, CURBS, ETC), THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE HAD A MAJOR, SIDEWALL BLOWOUT ON THE HIGHWAY (70 MPH) WITH NEAR CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES. CONTINENTAL WILL NOT ALLOW A REFUND BUT WILL ONLY PERMIT ME TO PURCHASE TIRES IN THEIR LINEUP ACCORDING TO THEIR 60 DAY POLICY. HOWEVER, THIS SHOULD BE AN EXCEPTION DUE TO THE NEAR MISS THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS BODILY HARM OR DEATH. I DO NOT TRUST THESE TIRES GIVEN THE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE FROM SUCH LITTLE USAGE (PLEASE SEE PHOTOS). THEY HAVE DENIED ANY CLAIM OF DEFECT IN THEIR TIRES BUT I AM PERPLEXED ON HOW SUCH EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO A TIRE CAN HAPPEN WITHOUT ANY TRAUMA OR INCITING EVENT. PLEASE DON'T PUT YOUR FAMILY OR LOVED ONES IN HARM'S WAY AND HIGHLY CONSIDER AN ALTERNATIVE BRAND OF TIRE THAN GENERAL OR CONTINENTAL.

I HAVE READ SEVERAL EMAILS STATING "ACCORDINGLY, PER WEBSITES ON RECALL THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT ON GETTING A RECALL FIXED, AND MOST DEALERS SHOULD HONOR THE RECALL AND FIX YOUR CAR FREE OF CHARGE. THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS IF YOUR VEHICLE IS OLDER THAN TEN YEARS AT THE TIME OF THE RECALL, THE DEALER MAY NOT FIX THE VEHICLE FOR FREE. REGARDLESS, YOU SHOULD STILL MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES OR CONTACT THE AUTOMAKER DIRECTLY AND LET THEM KNOW OF YOUR PREDICAMENT". MY PREDICAMENT IS I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO HAPPEN AND I CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY THE COST TO REPLACE THE DASHBOARD. ALL I WANT IS FOR THEM TO REALIZE THAT MY DEFECT FOR THE RECALL DID NOT SHOW UNTIL LAST YEAR. I GET MY CAR SERVICE EVERY YEAR AND THERE WAS NO VISIBLE DEFECT ON THE DASHBOARD.

- Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR, WHICH IS USED IN THE SIDE AIR BAG, THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG, AND THE KNEE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY, SOME INFLATORS WERE PRODUCED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF THE HEATING AGENTS NECESSARY FOR PROPER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.
- Consequence: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 6, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

I've owned BMWs, Mercedes, VWs, and Hondas, but this car surpasses them all in value.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. After my son was born, I was looking for a reliable car that would last for a long time and hold its value. Although I usually prefer sport cars or sedans, I decided to take a chance on this one. And I have to say, I've been pleasantly surprised! The car has a great overall character, and I especially love the spacious interior and the fact that it doesn't have any unnecessary features. To make it even more luxurious, I added an aftermarket wood grain kit that covers the entire dash in the factory wood trim. However, I have noticed some squeaks and rattles, which is a bit disappointing, especially considering that this is a Toyota and it's in a higher price range. Overall, though, I'm really happy with my purchase!

After owning this car, I can see why Toyota is doing so well. It's like owning a Lexus but costs much less. The blizzard-white pearl paint job is beautiful. I'm also impressed with the Avalon's fuel efficiency, getting 31 mpg on the highway. I've test driven a Lexus and previously owned a Volvo, but the Avalon is such a great car for the money.

I'm glad to hear that you're not disappointed after trading your 2003 Seville. The gas mileage is great on regular gas, which is a plus. Although the Nav system leaves a little to be desired, I can understand how that message can get on your nerves every time you start the vehicle. It should definitely be easier to program. The sound is good and JBL did a fine job. I also think that surround sound is a great feature. The cabin is tight and noise and rattle free, which is great. I'm happy to hear that you find the Avalon more comfortable than your previous Cadillacs. It's definitely a no brainer when it comes to comfort. The Avalon wins hands down!

I inherited this car from my parents, and although it had been sitting under a tree for 3 and 1/2 years and looked like it was ready for the trash heap, I decided to give it some love. Little did I know, I had a diamond in the rough! I had it towed to a reputable mechanic, who went through it and changed all the fluids, tires, and more. A week later, I drove it from Florida to Bellingham, Washington, and it was flawless! As a 60-year-old who has owned many cars, I can confidently say that this is hands-down the best vehicle I have ever driven. It's the largest of the Avalon's, and when I'm parked next to a newer one, people stare at mine in envy. With only 115,000 miles on it, it feels like a brand new car. I've owned several Toyotas in my life, but none like this particular model of Avalon. Toyota, please bring back the big rig - what a vehicle! It looks like it's rolled out of the showroom last week, and I'm going to keep it for the rest of my life. Even after 4 more cross-country trips since the review, there have been no mechanical problems! At 150,000 miles, it's still running and looking great in 2021!

The car has excellent sound system and leg room. Although the comfort and fuel economy are good, the steering is worrisome due to a clunking sound and feeling when accelerating and stopping. Despite having to replace the steering column once, it seems that another steering column has gone bad and needs replacing. However, I am fortunate to have an extended warranty. It is disappointing to experience issues with the reliability and quality of the car. Nevertheless, I am confident that Toyota will approve the replacement of the steering column soon.

This is my first Toyota, but I've owned several Japanese sedans before. What sets the Avalon apart from other Asian performance sedans is that it has 268-280 horsepower, yet it takes regular gas and frequently gets more than 20 mpg. That alone makes this car worth considering. Many reviews have commented on what a great car this is, but some have said it's not very 'athletic.' However, I've found the opposite to be true with the Touring edition. The suspension is ideal and is nicely matched with the power of the vehicle. It feels very different from American cars because there is absolutely no bounce, no matter what kind of surface I'm driving on. It's ironic since this is a large luxury sedan that was designed and built in the U.S. I would love to see a stick shift option and a less Camry-like exterior.
