2004 Toyota Avalon problems

The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

2004 Toyota Avalon recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2004 Toyota Avalon.

2015-01-28
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla vehicles manufactured December 28, 2001, to May 2, 2004, 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix vehicles manufactured January 6, 2002, to April 29, 2004, 2003-2004 Avalon vehicles manufactured June 5, 2002, to December 20, 2004, and 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles manufactured January 18, 2002, to April 27, 2004. Due to electrical noise, a component in the air bag control module may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags or the seat belt pretensioners increases the risk of an injury or crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the air bag control module, free of charge. The recall began on August 24, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. GM issued an interim notification to owners on March 27, 2015. The recall began on August 24, 2015. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-620-7668. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 13V-029 and 14V-147. Vehicles that had a noise filter installed as the remedy for one of those campaigns need to have the air bag control module replaced under this campaign.
2011-11-09
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AVALON VEHICLES; 2004 AND 2005 CAMRY, CAMRY SOLARA, HIGHLANDER, AND SIENNA VEHICLES, 2006 HIGHLANDER HYBRID; 2004 AND 2005 LEXUS ES330 AND RX330; AND 2006 LEXUS RX400H VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 1, 2004 THROUGH MARCH 31, 2005, EQUIPPED WITH THE 1MZ-FE OR 3MZ-FE ENGINE. THE AMOUNT OF ADHESIVE AGENT APPLIED BETWEEN THE OUTER RING AND THE TORSIONAL RUBBER DAMPER (INNER RING) IN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY MAY BE INADEQUATE. IF THE ADHESIVE IS INSUFFICIENT, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE OUTER RING MAY BECOME MISALIGNED AND IT MAY NOT PROPERLY ROTATE WITH THE INNER RING, CAUSING NOISE AND/OR ILLUMINATION OF THE BATTERY DISCHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT.
  • Consequence: IN SOME CASES, THE BELT FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE PULLEY WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND A SUDDEN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL CHECK THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY TO IDENTIFY WHETHER IT WAS PRODUCED BY THE U.S. SUPPLIER. IF SO, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE PULLEY WITH A NEW ONE AT NO CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING EARLY JANUARY 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
2010-07-29
  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2000-2004 AVALON VEHICLES. DUE TO IMPROPER CASTING OF THE STEERING LOCK BAR, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT A MINUTE CRACK MAY DEVELOP ON THE SURFACE OF THE LOCK BAR. SUCH A CRACK MAY EXPAND OVER A LONG PERIOD OF REPEATED LOCK AND UNLOCK OPERATIONS, AND EVENTUALLY THE LOCK BAR COULD BREAK.
  • Consequence: SHOULD THE STEERING LOCK BAR BREAK, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK AND THE DRIVER WOULD LOSE THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING INTERLOCK DEVICE FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Negative 2004 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Hans O'Conner 2024-11-13

I purchased the vehicle brand new towards the end of 2004. Unfortunately, after about six months, I noticed that the steering was not operating smoothly and the vehicle was shaking. Despite taking it to the dealer, no issues were found. I tried several alignments and different sets of tires, which showed some improvement, but it still did not meet my expectations for a top-of-the-line Toyota. From around 20,000 miles, I started hearing rattling and noises from different interior parts. Now, at approximately 50,000 miles, the crankshaft pulleys have broken, and I have been quoted $2,000 to fix the issue. In summary, I bought this car based on my positive experience with my 1990 Toyota Pick-up, which has over 260,000 miles and has required minimal repairs. However, my Avalon has been a different story, with lots of expensive repairs and minimal enjoyment.

  2. Murl Konopelski 2024-05-27

Since the 1960s, I have owned several automobiles, including a '67 Deville convertible and my current Avalon. However, I have been experiencing some issues with my Avalon such as a slipping transmission and a leaking radiator that causes the car to heat up after 15 minutes of driving. The dealer claims that this is normal at this time, but I find it unacceptable, especially considering the price difference. On the other hand, my wife's 2002 Chevrolet Impala with 93000 miles on it has had no problems. In my opinion, Cadillac or Chevrolet would be a better choice. Thank you for considering my experience.

  3. Wilbert Langworth 2024-04-04

The Avalon is Toyota's flagship vehicle, but my 2004 model has been a disappointment. I purchased it for the smooth ride, but unfortunately, the shocks/struts needed to be replaced with less than 30,000 miles. Thankfully, the dealership covered this under warranty after some prodding. The front brake rotors also needed to be resurfaced due to pulsating, which was also covered under warranty. However, the rear brakes were not covered, even though they were 95% gone at 29,000 miles, while the front brakes were still at 95%. It's frustrating, but I still love Toyotas and would consider buying another one. With respect, the 2004 Avalon has not met my expectations.

The car's performance has been subpar, with multiple issues arising at low mileage. These include a transmission failure at 15,000 miles, as well as problems with power window motors, the engine computer, and the water pump at 19,000 miles. Such issues suggest poor engineering.

This is my second Avalon and I have to say that my first one, which I bought in 1996, was of great quality. However, I have noticed that the 2004 model is not up to par. I have experienced some issues with the car smoking excessively even though it only has 4,000 miles on it. Despite taking it to the dealership four times, they have not been able to find any problems. I believe that smoke on a new car that costs $32,000.00 is definitely a cause for concern. Additionally, I have noticed a lot of road noise and the front seat does not provide enough support for my legs. The instruments also reflect in the windshield and the radio is full of static. Even after taking it to the dealership five times, they have not been able to fix these issues. I think that for a car that costs $32,000.00, this is unacceptable. I would advise potential buyers to be cautious.

Positive 2004 Toyota Avalon car reviews

This is the second Avalon we've owned (first one was a '98), and the 2003 is a much better car. The ride is very smooth, and the JBL speakers are definitely worth the money. The quality of the car is excellent. At least twice a month, my wife comments on just how pleased she is to have this car, and we've had it for a year. It's always great to hear that kind of feedback!

  2. Paris Cartwright 2024-11-05

This car is excellent in terms of comfort and spaciousness. While the performance is great, there is room for improvement. The motor runs smoothly and the shifting is seamless. However, the doors are prone to dings, which is a concern. I have had to have two dings taken out already. It is unclear whether this is due to the thickness of the metal used or the placement of the molding. Overall, I am pleased with the car, but the issue with the doors needs to be addressed.

Rally smooth driving car. Lots of luxury features. Put a spoiler on it to jazz it up a little. A real sleeper of a Lux car. Don't know why they advertise this car more. Overall, it's a really nice car to drive.

  4. George Wisoky 2024-10-10

I've had it for a year now and I still believe it was the best choice for me.

I'm so glad to hear that you find this Toyota outstanding in both appearance and comfort! I can definitely understand the excitement of driving a car that takes off like a bird. Just remember to keep an eye on the speed limit! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
