The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2017 Toyota Avalon problems

The 2017 Toyota Avalon, as per the search results, does not have any reported common problems, making it a reliable choice for potential buyers. However, it is essential to consider that every vehicle can have unique issues that may not be widely reported.

For the sake of providing valuable information, the following are some common issues reported for the Toyota Avalon in other model years, which could potentially also affect the 2017 model:

  • Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Some 2014 Avalon owners have reported sudden acceleration for no apparent reason, which experts suspect is due to electronic issues causing the throttle to engage without stepping on the gas pedal.
  • Misfiring Engine: Frustrated owners of 1995-2010 and 2012 Avalons have complained about misfiring engines, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing the coils may cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
  • Peeling Paint: The 2011 Avalon, in particular, has been reported to have issues with paint peeling off the car's roof, which costs around $1,100 to fix.
  • Airbag Malfunction: Airbag malfunctions have been reported as a common issue in the Avalon, which can negatively affect how it functions during a collision. Experts recommend replacing your car’s airbag once it has been deployed.
  • Faulty Alternator: Toyota Avalon alternator problems have been reported by owners, with the main symptoms being engine stalling, electrical issues, and unusual sounds. Alternator replacement can cost upwards of $700 depending on the shop.
  • Acceleration Issues: Speed control problems have been reported, with the cruise control system randomly slamming the brakes, the accelerator seemingly getting stuck, and the car suddenly beginning to accelerate. These issues can be caused by a damaged mass airflow or oxygen sensor, a faulty catalytic converter, debris-infested fuel system, or a misaligned timing belt.
  • Air Conditioner Problems: The air conditioning system in the Avalon has been reported to have issues, which can be caused by a variety of factors. Most solutions are relatively easy for a mechanic to implement.

While the 2017 Toyota Avalon does not have any reported common problems, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering a purchase. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems before they become severe.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-08-14
  • VIN: 4T1BK1EB5HU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE (08/14/2017) I NOTICED A DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE ANALOG SPEEDOMETER AND THE CENTER DIGITAL DISPLAY OF THE SPEED (MPH). CONTACTED THE SERVICE MANAGER OF THE DEALER WHERE PURCHASED. HE ADVISED THERE IS NO FIX. I NOTED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THIS PROBLEM ON THE WEB. THE ERROR IS BETWEEN 2 AND 3 MPH AND VARIES WITH DIFFERENT SPEEDS. STARTING SPEED IS ZERO WITH THE ERRORS OCCURRING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. I HAVE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS CHECKED THE ACTUAL SPEED AGAINST LOCAL "RADAR" WARNING SIGNS. IT APPEARS THAT THE DIGITAL DISPLAY IS THE MOST ACCURATE. I HAVE TAKEN PICTURES OF THE DISCREPANCY AND SENT THEM TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE THEN AGREED TO GO FOR A TEST DRIVE WITH ME. HE CONNECTED TO THE VEHICLE A TOYOTA TECH STREAM DEVICE. I ALSO HAD HIM ACTIVATE HIS GPS SPEED PROGRAM ON HIS CELL PHONE. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT HIS TECH STREAM DEVICE WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND/OR WAS DISPLAYING SPEEDS THAT WERE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE DIGITAL DISPLAY OR THE ANALOG DISPLAY (THE MAIN ROUND SPEEDOMETER NEXT TO THE TACHOMETER). HOWEVER, HIS GPS PHONE APP INDICATED THAT THE DIGITAL DISPLAY WAS THE MOST ACCURATE. THE RESULTS ALSO CONFIRMED THE DISCREPANCY OF 2-4 MPH BETWEEN THE ANALOG AND DIGITAL DISPLAYS. A COMPLAINT FILED WITH TOYOTA LAST WEEK BY ME RESULTED IN A PHONE CALL FROM THEM INDICATING THAT THERE WAS NO SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WITH THE CALLER EVEN INDICATING THAT THERE WERE NO COMPLAINTS OF THIS ISSUE TO BEGIN WITH. (JUST GOOGLE IT AND YOU WILL SEE THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SEVERAL YEARS.) NOW, THIS MIGHT NOT BE AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE BUT IT SURE COULD GET ONE INTO A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT. IF ONE THOUGHT HE OR SHE WAS GOING 66 MPH AND WAS ACTUALLY GOING 70 MPH IN A 65 ZONE, YOU COULD BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO RECEIVING A CITATION FOR DOING SO. I SHOULD KNOW, I'M A RETIRED STATE TROOPER.

Negative 2017 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Leopoldo Emmerich 2024-11-07

The ride is a bit stiff and minor bumps can be jarring. Additionally, wind noise can be heard even at low speeds. The interior design is not the most comfortable, with the passenger seat lacking vertical adjustment and both front seats becoming stiff and uncomfortable after about 30 minutes. However, the seat warmers are a welcome addition and help alleviate some discomfort after an hour of driving. The interior storage is limited, with slim door bins and cup holders that do not snugly hold cups, causing items to shake around. Overall, the interior environment is a bit awkward and small, making getting in and out a bit difficult. On the positive side, the car is more sporty than expected and handles well, with good acceleration and braking and a smooth transmission. The paddle shifters are also a fun addition. The sound system is basic and may be better off not being turned on. The car has great paint and safety assists, especially the back up and lane warnings. However, it is important to note that for the price, you are not getting an Avalon, but rather a very hot Corolla. It is also worth mentioning that at 24K miles, the trade-in value is quite low, at under $23K, with a retail selling price of only $24-26K.

  2. Jordon Ebert 2024-11-03

I lease a 2014 Avalon Touring. Although it has Michelin low profile tires, I find the ride to be quite rough. Additionally, the road noise in the car is so loud that it's difficult to talk on my phone while driving. I plan to test drive other cars to see if they have similar issues. I'm surprised that more people haven't complained about this, unless I just happened to get a lemon. Best regards, CMT from North Carolina.

  3. Kory Howell 2024-09-06

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Toyota Sedan Limited Version. Although I have only owned it for 9 months and put on 7980 miles, I have not experienced any mechanical issues. However, I have noticed that the current trade-in value is approximately $27,500 + or -, which seems low compared to the retail price of the car when it was new at 43K+. I was hoping for a higher value given the initial cost of the car. Additionally, I have noticed that the interior of the car is not up to par for a high-end sedan. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

  4. Wellington Wuckert 2024-02-06

The wind noise is so loud that it makes it difficult to hear the radio.

Positive 2017 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Max Tromp 2025-01-02

Since the purchase in Nov.2020, I have gone through 2 winters and in the middle of a third one. I have not had any issues other than replacing the original car battery which decided to say goodbye recently. The car has been very stable on the highway and is a gem to drive while listening to music. The hands-free incoming calls and built-in navigational directions are excellent features. I have no complaints and am completely satisfied. Thank you!

  2. Leopold Zieme 2024-08-13

This is my fourth Avalon! The more I drive it, the more fun and comfortable it becomes!

  3. Van Kreiger 2024-07-06

Your mother in law has great taste! It took me 20 years to finally get my own Avalon, but I'm so glad I did. It was definitely the best decision I could have made when it comes to buying a car.

  4. Burley Kulas 2024-05-17

I'm thrilled with how the car handles! It has so many features that my older Toyota Corolla didn't have, like heated seats, dual air conditioning, and lane departure alert. The leather seats are definitely a plus.

  5. Friedrich Kuhlman 2024-03-24

It's great to hear that you find the car roomy and that you appreciate the nice interior. The 19-inch tires are also a great feature!
