The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-12
  • VIN: 4T1BK3DB2BU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine has quit while in traffic several times and the check engine light and the skid control lights are the only lights lit on the dashboard. Once the car comes to rest and one waits 3 to 5 minutes, the car will restart. We have taken the car to the dealer twice, ( each time the had it for nearly a week) and they could not find the problem. This is a very serious problem because the engine stops without notice causing loss of power steering and total loss of control. The lights for check engine and skid control are sometimes on when this happens, but not always; and the fact that these lights are lit does not predict this event happening.I think there might be a sensor in the engine that is faulty.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-28
  • VIN: 4T1BK3DB8BU
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: THE REAR SUNSHADE IS STUCK IN THE UPRIGHT POSITION WITHOUT BEING ACTIVATED AND DOES NOT GO DOWN WHEN THE CAR IN PUT IN REVERSE. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY FATAL SITUATION AT NIGHT WHEN VISIBILITY IS POOR. THERE ARE A PLETHORA OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SUNSHADE ON THE INTERNET. WHEN I ASKED THE DEALERSHIP HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST TO REPAIR, THEY ONLY REPLACE THE DEVICE FOR $1000, AND THE DEFECTIVE SUNSHADE EVEN AFTER REPLACEMENT COULD REPEAT THE HAZARDOUS SITUATION. TOYOTA SHOULD REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE, HAZARDOUS PART AT NO COST. IT IS A THREAT TO SAFETY FOR ALL PASSENGERS. THE DEFECT OCCURRED RANDOMLY WITHOUT PROVOCATION UPON STARTUP WITH THE CAR PARKED. A GRINDING NOISE WAS HEARD, THEN THE SHADE WENT UP - UNRESPONSIVE TO THE ACTIVATING/DEACTIVATION CONTROL BUTTON. I HAD TO DRIVE IN THE SLOW LANE DUE TO POOR VISIBILITY.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-08-23
  • VIN: 3949464B111
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WENT FOR MY ROUTINE SERVICE AND WAS TOLD I HAVE A RACK&PINION LEAK, NO LEAKING OBSERVED UNDER CARPORT BUT WAS SHOWN THE LEAK ONCE CAR WAS PLACED ON RACK TO BE VIEWED. ASKED IF CAR WAS SAFE TO DRIVE TO ATLANTA, MECHANIC AND SERVICE MANAGER ENCOURAGED ME TO GO AHEAD AND DRIVE IT, THEY STATED IT WILL NEED A NEW RACK & PINION, STATING IT WILL COST APPROX.. $800.00 PULSE $89.00 FOR FRONT END ALIGMENT. THEY SAID THIS IS NORMAL FOR AVALONS TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED FROM A TOYOTA DEARLERSHIP WITH 38,000 ON SPEEDOMETER AND AT THE TIME OF SERVICE I ONLY HAD PUT APPROX. 21,000 MILES. I READ UP ON RACK AND PINION LEAKS AND IT STATED IT COULD BE DANGEROUS IF THE FLUID STARTED TO SPUR OUT WITHOUT A WARNING AND CAN CAUSE YOU TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I PURCHASED I THOUGHT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR $2600 AND TO BE TOLD THAT THE WARRANTY EXPIRED IN MAY 2018, 3YRS OR 30 THOUSAND MILES AND CAR WAS SERVED IN AUG.2018. I FILED BANKRUPTCY IN 2016 AND DON'T HAVE EXTRA MONEY TO FIX MY CAR SO I CALLED THE FEDELITY WARRANTY COMPANY AND THEY TOLD ME I SHOULD AS MY DEALERSHIP FOR A POSSIBLE REFUND. NOW THE VEHICLE DRIVE VERY BAD AND I FEEL LIKE THEY SHOULD AT COMPENSATE ME AND FIX THE VEHICLE AT A REDUCED CHARGE SINCE I PAID THEM $2600. I FEEL LIKE MY LIFE HAS BEEN PUT IN DANGER BECAUSE I CAN'T AFFORD TO MAKE A CAR NOTE AND PAY A LARGE FEE TO FIX THE CAR. ALSO I ASKED FOR NEW TIRES, BUT THEY SAID THE TIRES WERE GOOD FOR AT 15,000 MILES. I PAID $24,995 FOR THE AVALON 2011 IN 2014. THEY AGREED TO GIVE ME 2 NEW TIRES WHEN NEEDED, BUT THESE WERE NOT MICHELINS, THEY WERE CHEAP TIRES AND THE THESE WERE PLACED ON THE FRONT AND THE OLD MICHELINS WERE PLACED ON THE BACK LAST YEAR AND AT THE NEXT SERVICE DATE THEY TOLD MED THEY COULD NOT BALANCE THE TIRES. I'M DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE I FEEL I GOT A BAD DEAL. I HAVE NEVER KNOWN IT TO BE NORMAL FOR A TOYOTA BRAND CAR TO EXPECT PROBLEMS.

2011 Toyota Avalon recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2011 Toyota Avalon.

2015-01-28
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Toyota Avalon vehicles manufactured February 9, 2010, to October 22, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the sub-woofer speaker located in the trunk may experience an intermittent electrical short which may cause damage to the integrated circuit (IC) in the audio amplifier. In some cases, the damaged IC may allow a constant electrical current flow to the sub-woofer.
  • Consequence: A constant electrical current flow may cause the sub-woofer to overheat, increasing the risk of fire.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the audio system amplifier and install a protective cover around the sub-woofer, free of charge. The recall began on July 1,2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

Negative 2011 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Rogelio Cormier 2024-10-29

I used to own a LeSabre, and while the Avy doesn't have as many features, it still has a smooth ride and good gas mileage. However, I did notice a motor whine and some issues with the windows sticking, and the trunk can be quite loud when closing. Additionally, the information display is quite limited. Overall, I think I'll be going back to Buick for my next car purchase as they offer more value for the money.

  2. Matt Quigley 2024-09-01

I recently purchased this car to replace my 12-year-old Camry. While I initially thought I was upgrading, I have some doubts after three months of driving it. The car runs smoothly and has good power, and I'm satisfied with the mileage. However, I have noticed that the materials used seem cheap, and the exterior panels are poorly fitted and don't line up with each other. Additionally, everything seems to be made of plastic. I have had a few issues with the car, such as the airbag light being stuck on and the need to replace the seat belt latch. The trunk also wouldn't close properly, but the latch was adjusted and the rubber weather stripping around the sunroof was glued back down. Lastly, my compass keeps sticking on NE. Overall, I still prefer my old Camry as it was more comfortable, but I'm hoping this car will grow on me.

  3. Elroy Jacobson 2024-08-25

I purchased my 2011 Avalon Limited brand new in December 2011. While it is not quite up to the same standard as my previous two Avalons, I still enjoy driving it. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues such as wind coming in through the window (although I have been told this is normal due to the mirror), a rough ride, and a lot of road noise. However, I am confident that these issues will be resolved soon. I have had to get the rear passenger window and reclining seat fixed, but the parts have been ordered and I am looking forward to getting them repaired. While the brakes feel a bit mushy and the struts could be improved, I trust that the car is up to Toyota's high standards. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and look forward to many more happy miles in my Avalon.

  4. Norris Little 2024-08-24

My family and I have owned every model of Avalon Toyota has ever made. While they may not be the most eye-catching cars, they have always provided great value for money and unbeatable rear legroom. The 2011 model, however, has made some exterior changes that make it look 1000 times better! Unfortunately, the interior seems to have been downgraded. The 'faux-wood' has less shine and looks like a rental car, and the fake brushed metal (plastic) center console is not very attractive and overhangs the rest of the dash by a good inch. The quality of the stitching in the rear seats also seems to have been lowered. I really wanted to like this car based on the tech/look upgrades, but the interior changes are not up to par. Perhaps we can look forward to a new version in 2 years!

  5. Darrell Weissnat 2024-06-06

The excessive road noise and difficulty in maintaining lane position, especially in windy conditions, are likely due to the Bridgestone tires. Additionally, the lack of a valet lockout for the trunk and issues with the volume speed control and radio display are areas for improvement. The directional signal is also difficult to hear.

Positive 2011 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Carson Dibbert 2025-01-06

Congratulations on your new Avalon! It's great to hear that you found the perfect car after looking for a couple of years. The 2011 model sounds like it has exceeded your expectations with its smooth and quiet ride, and the best sound system on the market. As someone who has owned a Sienna and a Prius, it's exciting to see you branching out to a new model. I hope you enjoy many comfortable miles on the highway in your new car!

  2. Bertrand Hill 2025-01-03

I recently sold my 2006 Toyota Avalon Limited with over 200,000 miles on the clock for cash that was $1,500 over book. I then purchased a gently used 2011 Avalon Limited for just over $1,000 under book. It's still a full-sized vehicle and provides a fantastic ride. After installing new brakes and a set of tires, I was ready to hit the road. It's a fantastic vehicle and I purchased it for 1/4th the price of a new one. Why waste your money on a new car when you can get a great low mileage used car that will last just as long?

  3. Brendan Conn 2024-11-12

I moved from an ES350 and I really like the better visibility, ride (no boat float), comfort and especially much less road noise. However, I do hear the wiper motors and the whine of the transmission. I had to change out the horrible noisy wiper blades. Additionally, the interior is very cheap by comparison to others in class. On the other hand, it really has great handling compared to others in class. I am not sure if I will buy another until they get a better interior.

  4. Darian Reynolds 2024-10-16

I recently picked up a 2011 Avalon as my new company car. I've owned both the Lexus ES and GS models before getting company cars. While the Avalon is not a Lexus, its total package could be classified between the ES and GS. The ride and handling are soft, but everything is a trade-off.

  5. Caden Eichmann 2024-10-04

I have noticed two design issues with the car. Firstly, there is a significant glare on the windshield when driving into the sun or with the sun on your left shoulder, caused by the 'hump' over the instrument panel reflecting onto the windshield directly in the driver's view. This is something I have not experienced before in my 73 years. Secondly, when the sun shines on the digital clock, the white numbers turn red, making it difficult to read the actual time. For instance, at 3:43 pm, I saw '1388' in red numbers. However, when I blocked the sun, I could see the correct time in white numbers.
