2001 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2001 Toyota Avalon problems
The 2001 Toyota Avalon has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is transmission problems, which include difficulty shifting or hesitation between gears. This can be a significant issue, as it affects the car's drivability and can lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly.
Another common problem with the 2001 Toyota Avalon is sudden unintended acceleration, which has been reported by many 2014 Avalon owners. Experts suspect electronic issues to be the culprit, causing the throttle to engage without stepping on the gas pedal. This is a serious issue that has resulted in reports of accidents and injuries.
Misfiring engine is also a common problem with the 2001 Toyota Avalon, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Frustrated owners of 1995-2010 and 2012 Avalons have complained about misfiring engines, which cause the sedan to hesitate and jerk. Replacing the coils may cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
Peeling paint is another issue that has affected the 2001 Toyota Avalon, mainly the 2011 model year. Drivers reported that the paint on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof would bubble up and eventually peel. This is an expensive and annoying cosmetic issue that affects the car's overall enjoyment and value.
The 2001 Toyota Avalon has also been subject to several recalls, including engine problems, oil leaks, steering defects, and electrical issues. The 2006 Toyota Avalon was the worst model year, plagued by these serious issues.
Other common problems reported by 2001 Toyota Avalon owners include power steering fluid leakage, faulty alternator, air conditioner problems, and sensor issues. These problems can negatively affect how the car functions and can lead to more severe issues if not addressed promptly.
In conclusion, the 2001 Toyota Avalon has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include transmission problems, sudden unintended acceleration, misfiring engine, peeling paint, and several recalls. It is essential to address these issues promptly to avoid more severe problems and ensure the car's drivability and safety.

If you're in the market for an affordable used car that won't require constant repairs, this car is a great option! I received this car from my wife, and even though we bought it with 170k miles, it's still going strong at 193k. We've only had to do fluid changes, replace the tires, brakes, and struts, and it's been rock solid. The back seat has tons of room for my kids and even a guitar amp, and the trunk is huge. I drive over 30 miles a day for work, and it starts up like a champ every day. The interior is well thought out, and aftermarket parts are easy to find. The only minor issues we've had are with the 6CD changer, which stopped working and can't get the CDs out. Repairing the CD unit costs $250. Also, at this age, the subwoofer cone may be shot, but it's easy to rebuild it yourself for just $30 with a kit from Simply Speakers dot com. The JBL system sounds awesome!
-
You've found yourself an excellent and dependable used car!
-
Your Avalon sounds like a fantastic car to take on long road trips! It's great to hear that the car is both responsive and comfortable. Additionally, the gas mileage of approximately 29 mpg on the highway is excellent.
-
I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car! It sounds like you've taken great care of it with regular oil changes and a new set of tires. I bet it looks fantastic after a good wash every other week. It's great to hear that the car is in excellent condition with no problems at all.
-
The car has performed very well! The gas mileage is good, especially for this car's size. It's extremely smooth and quiet, running as well as it did when it was new. The brakes were changed at 72K miles, but other than that, I've only done fluid changes, batteries, tires, filters, and timing belt/water pump -- all recommended maintenance. It's extremely comfortable on long trips, and the back seat has tremendous leg and head room.

The test drive felt like driving a Camry with a bigger body. While the interior may not be the most attractive and comfortable, and the exterior may not be for everyone, the engine is alright. The corner handling could be improved, but the suspension is similar to that of a Camry.

Beginning at 15K, it started to perform like a vehicle with 4 times the miles. The dealer was happy to help, but dismissed my complaints with a 'they all do that' attitude. The brakes were squeaking and clacking, there was wind sway, rapid tire wear, and an overall loose feel, despite all the service. I ended up trading it at the end of the year, and the mediocre resale value added insult to injury. This was my first and last Toyota!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2001 Avalon XL. I absolutely love the car's paint job and it's been a great travel companion. I've driven it at speeds of 80-90mph and I'm amazed at how little road or wind noise there is. Overall, I've had no issues with the brakes, tires, or engine. However, I have noticed that after 8,000 miles, the back doors tend to open and close a lot and I hear some squeaking or cracking noises when going over bumps. It's not a big deal, but just something to keep in mind. Also, I don't think it's fair to compare this car to the Maxima GLE since they serve different purposes. Thanks for listening!

You may want to reconsider purchasing this vehicle as I have experienced several issues with it. I have had to make multiple trips back to the dealership for issues with the woodgrain, brakes, rotors, and dashboard cracking. Additionally, I have been in two front-end accidents, one with a deer and one with another vehicle on the interstate at 65 mph, and in both cases, the airbags did not deploy. The last accident occurred on 09/04/02 and the seat belt did not even lock. The body damage to the Avalon was very severe. This is the fifth Toyota vehicle that I have owned, but unfortunately, this one has ruined their reputation for me. On another review, it received a 3-star rating on crash tests, which contradicts my experience. By the way, the Ford Focus rated higher! I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.
