2022 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2022 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon, known for its luxury features and power, is a popular choice among sedan buyers. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain problems. Here are some of the common issues reported by Toyota Avalon owners:
- Acceleration Issues: Speed control problems are often reported by Avalon owners. These issues can include the cruise control system randomly slamming the brakes, the accelerator getting stuck, and the car suddenly accelerating. These problems can be caused by damaged mass airflow or oxygen sensors, a faulty catalytic converter, debris-infested fuel system, or a misaligned timing belt. Given the danger involved with having a malfunctioning acceleration system, it's crucial to take the vehicle to a shop as soon as possible if these issues are suspected.
- Air Conditioner Problems: The air conditioning system in the Avalon can experience problems, which can be caused by various factors ranging from a simple clogged filter to more complex issues like a faulty compressor. These problems can affect the overall comfort and value of the vehicle.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems, such as difficulty shifting or hesitation between gears, have been reported by Avalon owners. These issues have been prevalent in various model years, including 1995-1998, 2000-2007, 2009, and 2015. These problems can be caused by worn-out gears, low transmission fluid levels, or faulty sensors. Transmission repairs can be costly, with some repairs costing upwards of $1,000.
- Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Some Avalon owners have reported instances of sudden unintended acceleration, where the car accelerates without any input from the driver. This issue has been attributed to electronic issues causing the throttle to engage without stepping on the gas pedal. This problem can be particularly dangerous and should be addressed immediately.
- Misfiring Engine: Frustrated Avalon owners have reported misfiring engines, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing the coils may cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
- Peeling Paint: This issue mainly affects the 2011 Avalon, but it has also been reported in other models. Drivers reported that the paint on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof would bubble up and eventually peel.
- Airbag Deployment and Seat Belt Pretensioners: The 2012-2018 Avalon models had an issue with airbag deployment and seat belt pretensioners. The 2013-2015 Avalon models were recalled due to unexpected brake activation from a faulty Pre-Collision System. The 2014 Avalon also experienced a higher incidence of fuel leaks, leading to fire and triggering a recall.
- Rear Window Sunshades: Over 200 owners have complained about the rear window sunshades failing or emitting a grinding noise.
- Ignition Coil Failure: 171 owners complained about ignition coil failure after the 100,000-mile mark.
It's important to note that while these issues have been reported by some Avalon owners, Toyota vehicles are still among the best and safest cars on the road today. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues, and it's always a good idea to research a specific model year's history before purchasing a used vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-11
- VIN: 4T1AZ1FB7NU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: The vehicle was proceeding on the freeway when the drivers side rear tire blew out and went completely flat. The low pressure tire warning system that alerted us never indicated that the air pressure was low or getting low, but rather it had instantly dropped to 0 PSI. There was no integrity left to the tire which posed an extreme safety hazard to the stability of the vehicle. Upon contacting Bridgestone I was asked to have a third party company inspect the tire to which we complied. The inspection revealed that the tire had suffered a failure due to a manufacturing defect and not wear/tear or accidental damage. The tires equipped on the vehicle are approximately one year old with less than 3,800 miles on them. Bridgestone is refusing to honor a replacement due to their defect unless I purchase an extended warranty for all 4 tires. Tire Size: 215 / 55 R 17
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-31
- VIN: 4T1EA1AB6NU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was driving home from work. I was on the the highway driving approximately 55 mph. All of a sudden I heard what can only be described as a gun shot or explosion. It was extremely loud and it almost caused me to run into the guardrail. I then heard glass falling onto the safety shield of my moonroof. I got home and inspected the moonroof and there was a large hole in the moonroof. The glass appeared to push out from inside the car. There were zero signs that this would happen. The moonroof is never used. It was approximately 75 degrees and partly cloudy when this occurred.
WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-14
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1AZ1FB2NU
- Components: WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving, the tire sidewall ripped in half. I had reported this as a tire failure but Firestone (owns Bridgestone) stated that this was caused by the vehicle (Toyota Avalon). I did want to report this in case there are other incidents.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-15
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 4T1AZ1FB2NU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Tire blew out, the outer sidewall completely came apart at the seams. There was no external pressure and there are less than 5,000 miles on the car. The PSI was at 35 as per the manufacturers spec.

I'm so glad you settled on the touring edition! It's a great choice. If you don't mind me suggesting, the additional $1150 safety package is definitely worth the investment. Thank you for considering it!

This car is very well designed, quite comfortable and has every upgrade imaginable. It compares to much more expensive luxury cars, for less money.

Great car, I love it! I have the 2022 Limited Avalon, which has fantastic leg room and convenient features. The only issue I've encountered is with my Hancock tires. I recently took my car to the dealership because I thought I had a problem with a wheel bearing, but they informed me that it was actually the tires. There's a whooping sound on one side that I can only hear from inside the car.

This is a significant improvement in the 'sports ride' experiment that Toyota tried in 2013. The previous models rode like a truck, which alienated the demographic that brought them to the party. However, this new model offers a much better ride. Although some may find its appearance reminiscent of a whale shark, it's important to note that Toyota's recent lineup has undergone significant changes.

I recently traded in my 2017 Avalon for the 2022 model, but unfortunately, I am not satisfied with my purchase. The new model lacks some of the features that I had grown accustomed to, such as the change compartment, sunglasses or prescription eyeglass holder, and CD player. Additionally, the glove box does not lock, which is a bit concerning. I wish I had taken a closer look at the car before making the purchase, as the dealership did not provide me with all the necessary information. My previous Avalon had everything I needed, and I had hoped that the 2022 model would be an improvement, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. I would advise others to carefully consider their options before making a purchase. As a consumer, I am disappointed with my experience.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2020 Avalon Hybrid Limited in September and I've been enjoying it so far. However, I did run into a small issue with the windshield wipers. When I tried to lift the driver's side wiper, it was obstructed by the hood and I was worried about damaging it. I reached out to the dealership and corporate customer service to address the issue, but unfortunately, I didn't receive the help I was hoping for. Despite the frustration, I'm hopeful that we can find a solution. Thank you for listening!

Have you ever been in a situation where you unexpectedly come across a piece of tire tread on the road and couldn't avoid it in time? It's frustrating when it damages your car, especially when it's not your fault. This happened to me recently, and unfortunately, it caused some damage to my car. It's incidents like these that make me hesitant to buy low slung sedans like Toyotas.

Wow, it's amazing that you were able to get 11 years and 465,000 miles out of your 2005 Avalon! However, I can understand how the lower headroom might be a challenge for someone who is 6'6
