The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2022 Toyota Avalon problems

The Toyota Avalon, known for its luxury features and power, is a popular choice among sedan buyers. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain problems. Here are some of the common issues reported by Toyota Avalon owners:

  • Acceleration Issues: Speed control problems are often reported by Avalon owners. These issues can include the cruise control system randomly slamming the brakes, the accelerator getting stuck, and the car suddenly accelerating. These problems can be caused by damaged mass airflow or oxygen sensors, a faulty catalytic converter, debris-infested fuel system, or a misaligned timing belt. Given the danger involved with having a malfunctioning acceleration system, it's crucial to take the vehicle to a shop as soon as possible if these issues are suspected.
  • Air Conditioner Problems: The air conditioning system in the Avalon can experience problems, which can be caused by various factors ranging from a simple clogged filter to more complex issues like a faulty compressor. These problems can affect the overall comfort and value of the vehicle.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems, such as difficulty shifting or hesitation between gears, have been reported by Avalon owners. These issues have been prevalent in various model years, including 1995-1998, 2000-2007, 2009, and 2015. These problems can be caused by worn-out gears, low transmission fluid levels, or faulty sensors. Transmission repairs can be costly, with some repairs costing upwards of $1,000.
  • Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Some Avalon owners have reported instances of sudden unintended acceleration, where the car accelerates without any input from the driver. This issue has been attributed to electronic issues causing the throttle to engage without stepping on the gas pedal. This problem can be particularly dangerous and should be addressed immediately.
  • Misfiring Engine: Frustrated Avalon owners have reported misfiring engines, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing the coils may cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
  • Peeling Paint: This issue mainly affects the 2011 Avalon, but it has also been reported in other models. Drivers reported that the paint on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof would bubble up and eventually peel.
  • Airbag Deployment and Seat Belt Pretensioners: The 2012-2018 Avalon models had an issue with airbag deployment and seat belt pretensioners. The 2013-2015 Avalon models were recalled due to unexpected brake activation from a faulty Pre-Collision System. The 2014 Avalon also experienced a higher incidence of fuel leaks, leading to fire and triggering a recall.
  • Rear Window Sunshades: Over 200 owners have complained about the rear window sunshades failing or emitting a grinding noise.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: 171 owners complained about ignition coil failure after the 100,000-mile mark.

It's important to note that while these issues have been reported by some Avalon owners, Toyota vehicles are still among the best and safest cars on the road today. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues, and it's always a good idea to research a specific model year's history before purchasing a used vehicle.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-11
  • VIN: 4T1AZ1FB7NU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: The vehicle was proceeding on the freeway when the drivers side rear tire blew out and went completely flat. The low pressure tire warning system that alerted us never indicated that the air pressure was low or getting low, but rather it had instantly dropped to 0 PSI. There was no integrity left to the tire which posed an extreme safety hazard to the stability of the vehicle. Upon contacting Bridgestone I was asked to have a third party company inspect the tire to which we complied. The inspection revealed that the tire had suffered a failure due to a manufacturing defect and not wear/tear or accidental damage. The tires equipped on the vehicle are approximately one year old with less than 3,800 miles on them. Bridgestone is refusing to honor a replacement due to their defect unless I purchase an extended warranty for all 4 tires. Tire Size: 215 / 55 R 17

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-31
  • VIN: 4T1EA1AB6NU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was driving home from work. I was on the the highway driving approximately 55 mph. All of a sudden I heard what can only be described as a gun shot or explosion. It was extremely loud and it almost caused me to run into the guardrail. I then heard glass falling onto the safety shield of my moonroof. I got home and inspected the moonroof and there was a large hole in the moonroof. The glass appeared to push out from inside the car. There were zero signs that this would happen. The moonroof is never used. It was approximately 75 degrees and partly cloudy when this occurred.

  • VIN: 4T1AZ1FB2NU
  • Components: WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While driving, the tire sidewall ripped in half. I had reported this as a tire failure but Firestone (owns Bridgestone) stated that this was caused by the vehicle (Toyota Avalon). I did want to report this in case there are other incidents.

Negative 2022 Toyota Avalon car reviews

If you're around 6 feet tall, you might want to consider a different vehicle. As someone who's a little over 6 feet and weighs 225 pounds, I found that there were a few issues when I got into the driver's seat. Firstly, the vehicle sits quite low to the ground, which means that there isn't much headroom. Additionally, the front seat is about 1 1/2 inches shorter than other vehicles, which caused me to experience some thigh cramps when driving.

This is a significant improvement in the 'sports ride' experiment that Toyota tried in 2013. The previous models rode like a truck, which alienated the demographic that brought them to the party. However, this new model offers a much better ride. Although some may find its appearance reminiscent of a whale shark, it's important to note that Toyota's recent lineup has undergone significant changes.

I recently traded in my 2017 Avalon for the 2022 model, but unfortunately, I am not satisfied with my purchase. The new model lacks some of the features that I had grown accustomed to, such as the change compartment, sunglasses or prescription eyeglass holder, and CD player. Additionally, the glove box does not lock, which is a bit concerning. I wish I had taken a closer look at the car before making the purchase, as the dealership did not provide me with all the necessary information. My previous Avalon had everything I needed, and I had hoped that the 2022 model would be an improvement, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. I would advise others to carefully consider their options before making a purchase. As a consumer, I am disappointed with my experience.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2020 Avalon Hybrid Limited in September and I've been enjoying it so far. However, I did run into a small issue with the windshield wipers. When I tried to lift the driver's side wiper, it was obstructed by the hood and I was worried about damaging it. I reached out to the dealership and corporate customer service to address the issue, but unfortunately, I didn't receive the help I was hoping for. Despite the frustration, I'm hopeful that we can find a solution. Thank you for listening!

Have you ever been in a situation where you unexpectedly come across a piece of tire tread on the road and couldn't avoid it in time? It's frustrating when it damages your car, especially when it's not your fault. This happened to me recently, and unfortunately, it caused some damage to my car. It's incidents like these that make me hesitant to buy low slung sedans like Toyotas.

Positive 2022 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Wiley Upton 2025-02-20

This is a really good vehicle! It has all the latest features and safety controls of modern cars today. The seats are comfortable and adjust well, although the suede in place of leather for the seats is still up for debate. The front grill may be a little overbearing, but it does make it distinctive and sets it apart from the normal cookie-cutter designs of today. I have the touring model, so I can adjust the ride and steering dynamics. The ride and engine are both very good. The transmission can be a little indecisive at lower speeds, but it would be nice if Toyota updated the software for this. I did have an electrical ignition glitch after 6 weeks of delivery, which acted like a bad battery connection. I'm not sure what it was, but the local service department took care of the issue. Overall, I would definitely buy this vehicle again!

  2. Xander Bosco 2025-02-04

This vehicle is the flagship of Toyota sedans. Its ride and comfort are above par. I have driven all types of Toyotas over the last 25 years and this is by far the best. While there is always room for improvement, I believe that giving it a rating of 2 stars or lower is not justified.

  3. Murray Rau 2025-02-02

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that we have a fantastic car that is both beautiful and economical. Let me know if you're interested in learning more!

  4. Bertrand Bailey 2025-01-25

I'm giving this car a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It's a fantastic car, although not perfect. I bought it brand new in January of 2022 and absolutely loved it. The car comes with tons of tech in a beautifully styled package. The standard 3.5L V6 has tons of power and is way faster than an Avalon needs to be. Some of my favorite features were the adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving. It was very reliable and will stay in the lane as well as steer with your hands fully off the steering wheel. This system has been greatly improved over previous model years. The upgraded LED headlights in the Limited and Touring trims are super bright and light up the entire roadway. The interior is also very spacious. I'm 6'4The car comes with an 1100 watt 14 speaker JBL sound system, which was a big feature advertised when this generation of Avalon was introduced. However, I personally found it disappointing as it doesn't sound great and causes rattling and buzzing in the door panels and rear shelf when turned up. The 8-speed automatic transmission is generally smooth, but it can have some rough shifts at lower speeds and tends to hunt for gears in traffic. Additionally, the transmission can be rough going into reverse at times. It's worth noting that rain sensing wipers were removed for this generation on all trims, which is a shame as previous Avalons since 2005 had this feature. Overall, the Avalon is a fabulous car that most people will love, but if you're looking for a higher quality, Lexus-type experience, I would not recommend it. The interior materials quality is a little too Toyota-like for my taste. Since this was the last generation of Avalon, it feels like Toyota didn't try as hard, and it lacks the unique and special feel of previous Avalons. It feels like a slightly more upscale Camry, but not by much. Personally, I ended up trading this car in Oct 2023 on a 2021 Toyota Mirai Limited, which has a high-quality Lexus-like interior and an amazing sound system with no rattles. I think I would've kept my Avalon longer if I had bought it used for significantly less than what I paid for it new. The quality issues I mentioned were not worth the full price tag in my opinion, even though I got $5K off MSRP!

  5. Flavio Hermiston 2025-01-14

Great car for the money! I'm so glad you're enjoying your black Avalon with black interior and JBL sound system. It's great to hear that you find it drives smoothly and has impressive power and handling. I agree that it's a stylish car and a great value compared to the ES. It sounds like you made a great choice with your purchase and I hope you continue to love your Avalon for many years to come!
