1999 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 1999 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon, first introduced in 1995, has been a popular choice among consumers for its reliability and build quality. However, like any vehicle, the 1999 Toyota Avalon has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners. This article will discuss the top 5 problems found in the 1999 Toyota Avalon based on complaints from owners.
- Ignition Coils: One of the most common issues with the 1999 Toyota Avalon is related to ignition coils. The ignition coils are responsible for providing the spark that ignites the fuel in the engine. When they fail, the engine may misfire, stall, or have difficulty starting. Ignition coil failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, overheating, and electrical issues. In some cases, a faulty ignition coil may cause the check engine light to illuminate.
- O2 (Oxygen) Sensors: The O2 sensors in the 1999 Toyota Avalon are responsible for measuring the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases. When they fail, the engine may run poorly, consume more fuel than normal, or produce excessive emissions. O2 sensor failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including contamination, wear and tear, and electrical issues. In some cases, a faulty O2 sensor may cause the check engine light to illuminate.
- Transmission Shiftability: Transmission shiftability issues are another common problem with the 1999 Toyota Avalon. These issues can manifest as difficulty shifting gears, delayed shifting, or rough shifting. Transmission shiftability problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, low transmission fluid levels, and electrical issues. In some cases, transmission shiftability problems may be resolved by adjusting the transmission fluid levels or replacing worn or damaged components.
- Brake Master Cylinder: The brake master cylinder is responsible for providing hydraulic pressure to the brake system. When it fails, the brakes may feel spongy or soft, or the brake pedal may sink to the floor. Brake master cylinder failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, contamination, and leaks. In some cases, brake master cylinder failure may be resolved by replacing the faulty component.
- EGR Valve: The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve is responsible for reducing emissions by recirculating a portion of the exhaust gases back into the engine. When it fails, the engine may run poorly, consume more fuel than normal, or produce excessive emissions. EGR valve failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including carbon buildup, wear and tear, and electrical issues. In some cases, EGR valve failure may be resolved by cleaning or replacing the faulty component.
In conclusion, the 1999 Toyota Avalon is a reliable and well-built vehicle, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. The most common issues reported by owners include ignition coil failure, O2 sensor failure, transmission shiftability problems, brake master cylinder failure, and EGR valve failure. By addressing these issues promptly, owners can ensure that their 1999 Toyota Avalon remains a safe and reliable vehicle for years to come.

THE SUNROOF WAS CLOSED AT THE TIME, BUT I HAD NOTICED INCREASING WIND NOISE OVER THE LAST 12 MONTHS OR SO. AFTER CONDUCTING SOME ONLINE RESEARCH, IT APPEARS THAT OTHER SUNROOFS (E.G., THE WEBASTO MODELS 600/700 AND 900) THAT ALSO USED GLASS PANELS MANUFACTURED BY VERMEULEN HOLLANDIA ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM. I PURCHASED MY 1999 TOYOTA AVALON USED IN 2004 WITH ABOUT 16K MILES ON IT. I AM UNSURE WHETHER WEBASTO IS THE MANUFACTURER, BUT AM LISTING THEM IN THE FOLLOWING PAGE SO THAT I AM ABLE TO FILL OUT ALL THE REQUIRED INFORMATION TO FILE THIS REPORT ELECTRONICALLY. THE GLASS PANEL INDICATES THAT VERMEULEN HOLLANDIA BV IS THE MANUFACTURER, AND THE SN IS 361607. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-08-09
- VIN: 4T1BF18B1XU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON AUGUST 9, 2009, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER AVALON WITH OUR 8-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER IN IT, TO GRAB A BITE TO EAT IN WALNUT CREEK, CA. WHEN MY WIFE TRIED TO STOP THE CAR AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, THE CAR WAS SHAKING AND THE ENGINE KEPT RUNNING EVEN THOUGH THE KEY WAS OUT OF THE IGNITION. SINCE SHE COULD NOT TURN OFF THE ENGINE, SHE DECIDED TO DRIVE BACK HOME THAT WAS ONLY MINUTES AWAY. BUT ON HER WAY HOME, THE CAR LOST POWER AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN, WHITE SMOKE WAS ERUPTED OUT OF THE ENGINE. LUCKILY, THEY WERE TRAVELING ON THE RESIDENTIAL STREET AND MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO STEP ON THE BRAKE TO STOP THE CAR IN TIME BEFORE IT CAUGHT FIRE. EVEN PEOPLE FROM NEARBY RESIDENCE SAW THIS INCIDENT AND CAME OUT TO OFFER HELP. I COULD NOT IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THEY WERE TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY. NEVERTHELESS, MY WIFE WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AFTERWARD DUE TO THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. NOW THE CAR WAS DEAD!! I ORDERED AAA TO TOW THE CAR TO WALNUT CREEK TOYOTA DEALER THAT DAY FOR REPAIR. ON AUGUST 10, 2009, I WAS INFORMED BY TIM LUBECK, A TOYOTA ADVISOR THAT MY CAR STARTER STUCK ON THE 'ON' POSITION THE WHOLE TIME AFTER THE ENGINE WAS STARTED AND RUNNING, CAUSING THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE ENGINE AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THEY HAD EVENTUALLY REPLACED THE STARTER AND THE MELTED POSITIVE & NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CABLES FOR TOTAL REPAIR COSTS OF $922.04, WHICH I THOUGHT IT WAS EXCESSIVE ' ESPECIALLY THE LABOR COST THAT WAS $475.87. I'VE MAILED A LETTER ALONG WITH A COPY OF REPAIR INVOICE AND IMAGE OF DEFECTIVE STARTER ON 3/4/2010 [XXX] TO REQUEST FOR THE REIMBURSEMENT OF MY REPAIR COSTS THAT I DO NOT THINK I SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SINCE THIS WHOLE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE TOYOTA STARTER. SO FAR, TOYOTA DOES NOT EVEN HAVE A COURTESY TO RESPOND TO MY LETTER. I DO HAVE THE OLD PARTS, REPAIR INVOICE AND IMAGE OF THE DEFECTIVE STARTER AND MELTED WIRES. *TR

AT THE GREEN LIGHT, THE CONSUMER PUT HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO CHANGE THE GEAR FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE. ONCE IN DRIVE GEAR, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY AND INSTANTLY ACCELERATED AT A TREMENDOUSLY HIGH SPEED. THE CONSUMER STOMPED ON THE BRAKES CONTINUOUSLY WITH NO RESULT. THE VEHICLE CROSSED THE EAST SIDEWALK AND THREE EMPTY SOUTHBOUND LANES. IT THEN COLLIDED INTO THE THREE NORTHBOUND-LANE CARS; CROSSED THE WEST SIDEWALK AND CRASHED THROUGH A SIX FOOT COMMERCIAL CHAIN LINK FENCE; HIT A PARKED PICK UP TRUCK AND CRASHED INTO A WALL. THE WALL WAS THE FINAL OBJECT THAT STOPPED THE VEHICLE WHICH HAD MAINTAINED EXCESSIVE SPEED. PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT, THE CONSUMER COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER ABOUT A STRONG SMELL OF GAS. *JB

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-02-27
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1BF18B3XU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: IT HAS HAPPENED ON LEVEL SURFACES AS WELL AS INCLINES. WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKE, THEY FIRST MAKE A GRINDING SOUND. THEN, IMMEDIATELY AFTER, THEY MAKE A SOUND LIKE A METAL SPRING UNCOILING (LIKE A CLICKING, OTHERWISE). AFTER THAT, YOU ARE FREE SAILING AS YOU HAVE NO BRAKES! THIS HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE EITHER TRYING TO BRAKE OR EVEN AFTER BRAKING SUCCESSFULLY AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY LET LOOSE WHILE AT A STOP CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE FORWARD. I HAVE THANKFULLY BEEN ABLE TO AVOID ANY SERIOUS INJURY OR ACCIDENTS, HOWEVER HAVE HAD A MINOR ISSUE WITH HITTING A FENCE DUE TO THE BRAKE FAILURE. WE HAVE HAD THE BRAKE SYSTEM CHECKED FOR ANY REPAIRS NEEDED ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM. ALSO NOTE THAT THE ABS LIGHT AND TRACTION LITE OFTEN COMES ON DASH EVEN ON DRY SURFACES. THIS BRAKING PROBLEM IS SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS IN THE SIENNA, BUT IN OTHER MODEL TOYOTAS AS WELL. CURRENTLY, IT IS ONLY THE PRIUS BRAKING SYSTEM THAT IS GETTING PUBLIC ATTENTION, HOWEVER. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-03-18
- VIN: 4T1BF18B9XU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: AT ABOUT 5:00 P.M. MARCH 18, 2007, AS I WENT TO PICK UP MY 96 YEAR OLD MOTHER AT THE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY, I STOPPED MY 1999 TOYOTA AVALON UNDERNEATH THE DRIVE-THROUGH CANOPY TO WAIT FOR HER. AS I WAITED THERE, I NOTICED THAT A CAR HAD PULLED UP BEHIND ME AND WAS PREPARING TO DISCHARGE AN ELDERLY PASSENGER SO I PROCEEDED AROUND THE CIRCULAR DRIVE TO GET OUT OF THEIR WAY. AS I SLOWLY CIRCLED AROUND THE DRIVE BACK TOWARD THE ENTRANCE I NOTED THE OTHER CAR HAD CLEARED OUT. AS I COASTED TOWARD THE ENTRANCE I NOTED A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE SIDEWALK WALKING TOWARD THE ENTRANCE IN FRONT OF ME. AS I CONTINUED SLOWLY BACK TOWARD THE ENTRANCE, I FELT MY VEHICLE ACCELERATE VIOLENTLY TOWARD THE GROUP OF PEDESTRIANS. ENGAGING THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH BOTH FEET, I GRADUALLY BROUGHT MY VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL AND CONTINUED TO A SAFE STOP WHERE I SHUT OFF THE IGNITION. IT WAS A TERRIFYING FEELING TO FEEL THE SURGE OF POWER THAT I WAS BARELY ABLE TO CONTROL AND TO REALIZE THAT WITH THE PEOPLE WALKING IN FRONT OF ME I COULD HAVE INJURED OR KILLED SOMEONE. THE PEOPLE WERE ONLY ABOUT 30 FEET IN FRONT OF ME. I CALLED MY HUSBAND TO COME PICK UP MY MOTHER AND ME AS I WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR. I REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO MY TOYOTA DEALER WHO SCHEDULED AN INSPECTION. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, AFTER CLASSIFYING THE INCIDENT AS 'UNINTENDED ACCELERATION', PROCEEDED TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY, CLEAN THE FUEL INJECTORS, AND DE-CARBON THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS. THE THROTTLE BODY HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN SERVICED AT 45,900 MILES, (AN INTERVAL OF 43,240 MILES). A SERVICE INTERVAL OF 50,000 MILES IS RECOMMENDED BY THE TOYOTA DEALER. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS POTENTIAL FOR GREAT HARM TO PEDESTRIANS, THIS WAS THE ONLY INCIDENT OF UNINTENDED ACCELERATION THAT WE EXPERIENCED WITH THIS CAR DURING THE FOUR YEARS THAT I OWNED IT. ON FEB 13, 2008, I SOLD THE VEHICLE. *TR

EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-09-16
- VIN: 4T1BF18B9XU
- Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
- Summary: I ENTERED THE FREEWAY AND SUDDENLY MY CAR ACCELERATED AND I HAD NO CONTROL OVER IT. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH. ALL I COULD DO WAS STEER. I STAYED IN THE RIGHT LANE AND STEERED UP THE EXIT RAMP. I PUSHED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL, STAYED ON THE BRAKE, AND IT COASTED TO A STOP AT THE TOP OF THE RAMP, JUST BEFORE IT ENTERED THE INTERSECTION. I PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE, AND IT TOOK OFF AGAIN. I PUSHED IT BACK INTO NEUTRAL AND STEERED INTO AN EMPTY PARKING LOT. I PUT IT IN DRIVE AGAIN AND IT WAS FINE. I DROVE AROUND THE PARKING LOT. FINALLY, I DECIDED IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE HOME, BUT NOT ON THE FREEWAY. WHEN I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, HE DETERMINED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR. BY CHANCE, HE DISCOVERED THAT THE TIP OF THE MAT HAD APPARENTLY BEEN RESTING AGAINST THE BOTTOM TIP OF THE ACCELERATOR. HE CUT OFF THE TIP OF THE MAT. I REMEMBERED THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED ABOUT TWO YEARS PRIOR, ON A BUSY STREET, AS I DROVE OUT OF A CAR WASH. I HAD THE CAR TOWED HOME. ANOTHER MECHANIC FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. IT WAS PROBABLY THE MAT THAT FIRST TIME, TOO. BOTH INCIDENTS, ESPECIALLY THE SECOND ONE, WERE EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING. ALL I COULD WAS THANK GOD THAT THERE WAS NO COLLISION. *TR

SO, WE GET TO OUR DESTINATION AND I START TO GET OUT OF THE CAR AND FORGET I STILL HAVE THE SEATBELT ON. MY WIFE GETS BACK IN AND RELEASES IT, AND I GO TO GET OUT AND THE DAMNED THING WON'T PULL OUT/LOOSE. SINCE THE IDIOT THING THINKS IT'S PROTECTING ME, I PUSH A LITTLE OF IT BACK INTO THE SLOT ASSUMING IT WILL THEN RELEASE. NOOOOO! IT JUST GETS TIGHTER. WE START THE CAR TO SEE IF THAT RELEASES IT. NOOOOO! EVERY TIME I MOVE IT JUST GETS TIGHTER. A FREAKING BOA CONSTRICTOR COULD TAKE LESSONS FROM THIS THING. AFTER IT'S ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THE SEATBELT HAS WON, AND I'M BOUND UP LIKE A THANKSGIVING TURKEY, WE GET THE SCISSORS AND CUT IT LOOSE. THE TOYOTA ENGINEERS REALLY BLEW THIS DESIGN. SEVERAL FOLKS HAVE SAID THEY'VE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS IN CAR SEATS. ACTUALLY, THIS PROBLEM COULD BE KIND OF DANGEROUS IF YOU'RE IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR

I am thrilled with my car purchase! I bought it with 10,000 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. The only repair I needed was the A/C compressor, which the dealer replaced for me at no cost other than labor after the warranty expired. The car is flawless, solid, comfortable, and fun to drive. I always take it to the dealer for servicing, which is very affordable at only $26.95 for an oil change. I wonder how long this car will last, but I am hopeful that I can get up to 200,000 miles out of my Avalon. I see no reason to spend thousands more on another car when this one is perfect for me. After all, having BMW written on the hood just isn't worth it.

Purchased new. Now with 110,000 miles and still going strong! I've had no problems whatsoever, except for the replacement of an O-2 sensor, which the dealer kindly replaced for free even though it was 30,000 miles out of warranty. I absolutely love this vehicle!

The Toyota Avalon is a fantastic car with a reasonable price. It is reliable, comfortable, and quiet. The car is sporty yet spacious, providing a comfortable ride for all passengers. The pick-up speed is great, and the stereo system is fabulous. I would never consider buying a different sedan.

Your Avalon XL has been amazing! It has never let you down, and even after 73k miles, it still drives like it did on day 1. You initially leased it, but it was such a pleasure to drive daily that you had no problem buying the lease. Plus, the V6 engine provides lots of power!

We have a '96 Camry and a '99 Avalon XLS. Although we paid more for the Avalon, it hasn't held up as well as the older Camry. The Camry is still tight and rattle-free, while the Avalon has developed a lot of rattles despite only having 52,000 miles. Unfortunately, the front door locking mechanism fell apart after 40,000 miles, which was out of warranty and cost $530.00 to repair. The right front rotor is also worn out. As a stay-at-home mom who mainly uses the car for school runs, grocery shopping, and church, we are very gentle on our cars. However, we have decided to trade in the Avalon for a Saab wagon next week as we are tired of paying for repairs. While we have had some issues with the Avalon, we still appreciate the car and the memories we have made in it.

Although the car has a wonderful ride, it has had several issues that have been disappointing. These include a faulty airbag light, driver window failure, and issues with the right rear window, struts, door molding, and side molding. Additionally, the trunk flooded during rain, and the heated seats work poorly. While the cost of repairs has been high, I am confident that these issues can be resolved. However, based on my experience, I would not purchase another Toyota.

At 25k miles, I noticed that the ride quality of my car had deteriorated due to the springs and struts. Despite complaining to both the dealer and Toyota, their solution of adding more air to the tires did not solve the problem. As the car was still under warranty, I had the springs and struts replaced at 55k miles, which has now resolved the issue. However, I have decided to take my car to an independent garage for the work, as I do not trust Toyota to do it. While the ride comfort was affected, I believe that Toyota was aware of the spring problem but chose to ignore it. It is worth noting that the ride quality of my 2004 Avalon XL is significantly better than that of my 1999 model, which inspects all defects in the road.

Great car! You've only had a dead battery after 8 years of ownership and a failed starter after 6 years of ownership, which is pretty impressive.

This car has had multiple issues, including an oil leak, a sticking emergency brake, a falling side molding, and problems with the windshield motors and airbag light. Currently, there is a metal clanging noise in the motor. Despite only having 27,000 miles, the car's quality is not up to par with the price paid. It is clear that this car does not meet the standards of Toyota's quality reputation.
