1998 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 1998 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon is a popular full-size sedan known for its reliability and luxury features. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. This article will focus on the 1998 Toyota Avalon and its reported issues based on owner complaints.
- Misfiring Engine: Frustrated owners of 1995-2010 and 2012 Avalons, including the 1998 model, have complained about misfiring engines. This issue is primarily caused by faulty ignition coils, which can lead to hesitation and jerking while driving. Replacing the faulty ignition coils is the primary solution to this problem, which can cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
- Peeling Paint: This issue mainly affects the 2011 Avalon but has also been reported in other model years, including the 1998 model. Drivers have reported that the paint on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof can bubble up and peel.
- Faulty Alternator: Toyota Avalon alternator problems, including the 1998 model, have been commonly reported by owners. Symptoms include engine stalling at odd times, electrical issues causing normal power functions to malfunction, and hearing unusual sounds.
- Acceleration Issues: Speed control problems have been reported by some Avalon owners, including those with the 1998 model. Issues include the cruise control system randomly slamming the brakes, the accelerator seemingly getting stuck, and the car suddenly beginning to accelerate despite attempts to maintain a lower speed. These problems can be caused by various factors, such as damaged mass airflow or oxygen sensors, faulty catalytic converters, debris-infested fuel systems, or misaligned timing belts. If you suspect your vehicle has an acceleration issue, it is crucial to have it inspected and repaired by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.
- Air Conditioner Problems: Toyota Avalon air conditioner problems, including the 1998 model, have been reported by some owners. These problems can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty compressor, leaking refrigerant, or a malfunctioning blower motor. While not as serious as some other issues, air conditioner problems can affect the overall comfort and enjoyment of the vehicle. Most solutions are relatively easy for a mechanic to implement, and some may be possible for the vehicle owner to address at home with the right tools and knowledge.
In conclusion, the 1998 Toyota Avalon, like any vehicle, has its share of common problems. These issues range from transmission problems and sudden unintended acceleration to misfiring engines, peeling paint, faulty alternators, acceleration issues, and air conditioner problems. If you own a 1998 Toyota Avalon or are considering purchasing one, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues and have the vehicle inspected and maintained regularly by a qualified mechanic. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems from occurring or identify them early, allowing for timely repairs and ensuring the safe and reliable operation of your vehicle.

THE 1998 TOYOTA AVALON WHICH I WAS DRIVING REFUSED TO STOP AND CONTINUED ON INTO THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING AT MAYBE 30 MPH. Hi there! I'm so excited to share my story with you. When I was 15 and a half, my dad handed down his car to me. It wasn't exactly my first choice, but I'm a serious car enthusiast and I was grateful nonetheless. The car had 150k miles on it, but it has been such a reliable companion over the years. In fact, I made a bet with my dad that if the car ever died, we would replace it with a car of my choice (within reason, of course). But I'm still losing that bet because the car has not shown any signs of slowing down! Overall, I highly recommend this car if you're looking for a used, cheap, and low-maintenance option to get you from point A to point B. Thanks for listening to my story!
-
Update: Hi there! I just wanted to share how much I adore my car. It's incredibly comfortable, easy to drive, and the leather is still in great condition even after all these years. I've test-driven newer models, but in my humble opinion, none of them can compare to the comfort and ride of my trusty old car. Plus, it's still going strong, so why invest in a new one? I bought it back in 2002 with 51,000 miles on it, and now it has 183,000 miles. I paid $20,000 for it and have put in about $7,000 in repairs since then, including oil changes and the 60k, 120k, and 180k mile services. It's been incredibly dependable, although I have had to replace a few parts like the struts, radiator, both front and rear brakes twice, rack and pinion, idle stabilizer valve, thermostat housing, water pump twice, R-side engine mount, front and rear engine mount, and two lower control arm bushings. I've also had to deal with an oil leak twice and rebuild the pump. But overall, I'm still in love with my car and plan to keep it for as long as possible!
-
Solid and reliable car. Comfort is exceptional. Just returned from vacation, driving 18 hours straight with 5 people. Rear seat comfort is as good as front. Averaged 30 mpg.
-
Larger than a Lexus ES300. This car is amazing! Everything fits together perfectly (made in Kentucky, by the way). You won't believe it, but I haven't had a single problem in the 89000 miles on my car. It still runs like new!
-
Your 98' xls sounds like an amazing car! It's great to hear that you enjoy its performance so much. It's impressive that you've taken it to speeds exceeding 140 mph and it still rides great. Even with 110,000 miles, it's wonderful to hear that it drives the same as the day you bought it. The only issue you've had with it was the front strut towers, which may have been caused by your off-road adventures. Overall, it sounds like you have a fantastic car that has served you well!

We purchased this car used with 37K miles from a Toyota dealer. Unfortunately, the paint is in poor condition and appears to have microbubbles on the top. Additionally, the paint chips easily. We had to replace the strut plate at 50K miles, which cost $900. We also experienced a trunk leak due to a bad gasket in the tail lamp. Last week, we had to recharge the air conditioner at 65K miles. Despite these issues, the car drives great!

Hi there! I'm 17 years old and this car is my first car. It's like that first practice car that you usually bang up, but I haven't hit anything yet. My god, is this car reliable! We bought it back in 2003 with 116k on it in PERFECT condition. Now it's kinda banged up, radio buttons falling off, etc, but it just WON'T DIE. My mom used to drive it 160 miles a day at one point, and I drive it about 40-50 miles as of now (and I don't drive it nicely). It's close to 220k now. I'm getting an Acura TL, but if it wasn't for the car's body falling apart and the [violative content deleted] acceleration, I'd be sad about this departure. I'm just a bit mad at my parents because they said we're gonna sell it after the timing belt wears out :(
