2013 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2013 Toyota Avalon problems
The 2013 Toyota Avalon has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the pre-collision system radar not being programmed correctly. This issue can cause the collision avoidance radar to detect steel plates and roadway joints as objects, leading to misinterpretations and potential safety hazards. Toyota issued a recall to address this problem, but it remains a concern for 2013-2015 Avalon owners.
Another issue reported for the 2013 Avalon is related to the accelerator pedal mechanism. When the sliding surface of the friction level becomes smooth during operation, the accelerator starts sticking. This can result in the gas pedal becoming harder to depress, slower to return, or stuck when partially depressed, leading to unintended acceleration. This issue substantially increases the risk of an accident and prompted Toyota to issue a recall to address it.
In addition to these specific issues, the 2013 Avalon has been subject to a total of seven recalls, involving various components such as the accelerator pedal and airbag inflator. This is a significant number of recalls, and any used 2013 Avalon may still require necessary repairs.
While the 2013 Avalon has its fair share of problems, it is important to note that Toyota vehicles are generally reliable, and the Avalon is still amongst the best and safest cars on the road today. However, potential owners should be aware of these common issues to make informed decisions about their vehicle purchases.

- Summary: I recently took my car in for maintenance and I was offered a complimentary car wash. 1 week after the wash, I noticed there were cloth fibers stuck between the rear side body panels. When i pulled them out, there was evidence of rust and corrosion right underneath. I suspected the cloth fibers were from the dealership's car wash so i contacted them. They confirmed the fibers are from their machine but claimed the rust is caused by a pre-existing problem (there is a small gap between the side body that was noted in the pre-inspections), when asked if the rust was noted during pre-inspections as well, they refused to answer my question. There was no evidence of rust or corrosion on the car before this incident and there are other fibers stuck in the side body panels as well which i haven't taken out yet. I have previously taken my car through car washes but this incident has never happened before. Toyota's service center refuses to look into the matter further.

This car was just serviced three months prior for regular maintenance and the vehicle had no indicated issues at that time and was inspected again by the same Toyota Dealership. THIS DRASTICALLY REDUCES THE VISIBILITY OUT THE REAR WINDOW AND THERE IS NO OBVIOUS OR SIMPLE FIX FOR THE ISSUE. I HAVE FOUND ONLINE THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING A SIMILAR PROBLEM. BEFORE THE SHADE GOT STUCK, IT WOULD RANDOMLY EXTEND OR RETRACT DURING HOT DAYS, WHICH SEEMS TO BE DUE TO A FAULTY RELAY. THIS IS CLEARLY A POOR DESIGN WHICH PRESENTS A SAFETY HAZARD TO THE DRIVER AND ANYONE BEHIND THE VEHICLE WHILE BACKING UP.

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THIS ISSUE HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY. REAR SUNSHADE RANDOMLY DEPLOYED AND IS PERMANENTLY STUCK IN THE UP POSITION COMPLETELY BLOCKING REAR VISIBILITY. SUNSHADE IS SUPPOSED TO GO DOWN WHEN VEHICLE IS PLACED IN REVERSE, THIS FUNCTION NO LONGER WORKS FURTHER INHIBITING SAFE VEHICLE MANEUVERING. THE REAR FACING BACKUP CAMERA HAS A STATEMENT SAYING TO NOT RELY ON THE BACKUP CAMERA WHEN BACKING UP, THIS NO LONGER AN OPTION FOR ME AS I CAN NO LONGER CLEARLY SEE OUT OF THE REAR WINDOW. NIGHT TIME REVERSING IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE WITH ANY DEGREE OF SAFETY. THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOWN ISSUE WITH TOYOTA AS THEY REPLACED A RELAY IN THE SUNSHADE IN MODEL YEARS AFTER 2014 THAT SEEMS TO HAVE REMEDIED THIS ISSUE. THERE IS NO WAY MANUALLY LOWER THE SUNSCREEN. THERE'S NO WAY TO EASILY SWAP OUT THE DEFECTIVE RELAY. THERE'S NO WAY TO DISCONNECT THE SUNSHADE FROM THE WIRING HARNESS. THERE ISN'T AN INDEPENDENT FUSE FOR THE SUNSHADE THAT CAN BE REMOVED. THE SUNSHADE APPEARS TO BE ON A FUSE THAT CONTROLS THE HEADLIGHTS, TAILLIGHTS, BRAKING SYSTEM AND CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM. BY REMOVING THE FUSE THIS WOULD MAKE MY VEHICLE EVEN LESS SAFE THE IT ALREADY IS.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-01
- VIN: 4T1BD1EB7DU
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE REAR SUNSHADE IS STUCK IN THE 'UP' (EXTENDED) POSITION, GREATLY HINDERING VIEW TO THE REAR, BOTH WITH REAR-VIEW MIRROR AND WHEN DRIVER TURNS HEAD TO THE REAR. THIS DEVICE IS DESIGNED TO AUTOMATICALLY RETRACT FROM 'UP' POSITION EVERY TIME THE CAR IS SHIFTED TO "REVERSE" GEAR, SO AS TO NOT HINDER REAR VIEWS. IT WORKED FINE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, BUT LAST MONTH IT BECAME STUCK IN THE EXTENDED POSITION, AND CANNOT BE RETRACTED. THIS IS A PROBLEM AT ALL TIMES; BUT IS ESPECIALLY A DANGEROUS SITUATION AT NIGHT, WHEN DARKNESS HINDERS VIEWS. FROM ONLINE SEARCHING, IT APPEARS THAT THIS PROBLEM OCCURS VERY FREQUENTLY, AND MOST COMMENTERS SAY IT'S NOT WORTH FIXING, BECAUSE REPLACEMENT UNITS DEVELOP THE SAME PROBLEM. REMOVING THE UNIT IS MY PREFERRED APPROACH. BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT SEVERAL HOURS OF LABOR ARE REQUIRED, AS THE REAR SEAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. THIS IS NOT THE RESULT OF A MOVING CRASH; IT HAPPENED SPONTANEOUSLY, AND IS NOW AN ISSUE 100% OF THE TIME. *TR
2013 Toyota Avalon recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2013 Toyota Avalon.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: CRASH IMMINENT BRAKING
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Avalon and Avalon Hybrid vehicles manufactured October 19, 2012 to October 27, 2015 and 2013-2015 Lexus ES350 and ES300h vehicles manufactured June 18, 2012 to July 6, 2015. The affected vehicles are equipped with a Pre-Collision System (PCS) as optional equipment. In these vehicles, the PCS may unexpectedly activate and apply the brakes when the radar detects a steel joint or plate in the roadway as an object.
- Consequence: A vehicle that unexpectedly brakes increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain PCS components, free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this campaign are F1V and F2E.

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Camry and Camry HV, model year 2013 Avalon and Avalon HV and model year 2014 Corolla vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the windshield wiper switch assembly may short circuit. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, No. 104, "Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems."
- Consequence: A short circuit could cause inoperative windshield wipers, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the wiper switch assembly, free of charge. The recall began on November 8, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.
- Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Firstly, I want to say that I have owned three Toyotas, and I have driven over 160,000 miles on my previous two without any breakdowns or problems, not even minor ones. I was looking for a comfortable full-size sedan for my family with two kids, instead of a minivan or SUV, due to MPG issues. After test driving the Ford Taurus, Nissan Maxima, and Infinity G37, I decided to purchase an Avalon XLE. I can confidently say that I made the right choice. Although the car handling may not be as sporty as the Infinity, inside the cabin, we can really enjoy the quality of the Bluetooth audio system because it is so quiet, thanks to the use of noise reduction glass and its air drag coefficient of 0.28.

I knew this was the car as soon as I sat in the driver's seat for a test drive. I got the pearl white and tan interior with chocolate accents. It's an amazing car! I often have customers ride with me, and being 6'4

I've been driving my 2013 Avalon XLE Touring for about two years now, and I must say it has been a great experience. As the second owner, I was a bit skeptical about its performance, but it has exceeded my expectations. The car just crossed 90k on the odometer during a 7-hour road trip from CA to AZ, and I'm happy to report that it performed exceptionally well. Let me share some of the pros and cons that I have observed. On the positive side, the car is incredibly reliable. I'm very particular about my cars, and I run 91 gas, change the oil with full synthetic every 5k miles, and at 75k miles, I replaced the coolant and brake fluid. The car has had zero issues, and I believe it will run for hundreds of thousands of miles if maintained well. Another pro is the highway MPG. During my recent trip, I tracked my mileage and got just a hair under 32 MPG on the highway from CA to AZ, cruising between 70-80 most of the time. On my second tank of the trip, we did some city driving around Sedona and made a trip from Sedona to Phoenix, where I averaged just a tick under 28 mph. The car's ride is also impressive. It rides heavy, but it's not your dad's old Cadillac. The ride on the 2013 is actually quite a bit firmer and stiffer than I was expecting. That being said, there is still a very “solid” feel associated with this car's driving dynamics. I've hit 120 mph, and the car feels planted to the ground. Smooth, but not soft. The car's size is also a plus. I'm 6’2 and can sit behind myself comfortably. I purchased this car for my wife as her daily driver, and I like knowing she's in a big, safe car. Trunk space is amazing. We never have a problem loading anything we need into that trunk. On the downside, the interior build quality could be better. It rattles a little more than I'd like, especially if there's anything in the door cubbies or in the charging port area. Overall, I'm very happy with my Avalon and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable, spacious, and comfortable car.Sometimes there is a little rattle that comes from the dash right above where the speedometer is. Due to the firmer ride, if you have a tumbler in the cup holder, it might rattle. Also, there are not enough cup holders. It's not Chevy build quality bad, but it could be better. One downside is the driver's seat. It's really hard to get comfortable, and the adjustments just aren't great. If I could change one thing, it would be this. Another downside is the cost to repair exterior damage. I'm nitpicking again, but my wife backed into a wall, and the body shops let us know it was more to fix because it was a “luxury car”. I get it. The sound system/tech is also not great. I won't dive into the tech seeing as it's from 2013 and it's completely obsolete lol. The sound system on this car is pretty bad too. On the bright side, the performance is decently efficient on the highway, reliable, and adequately powerful. The 3.5 V6 isn't going to knock anyone's socks off, but it gets the job done. It's low maintenance, reliable, and you have enough passing power to get you out of any iffy highway merging situation. Overall, if you prioritize reliability and plan on owning your next vehicle for 200k+ miles, the Avalon is worth a look. This car is a really nice highway cruiser. It's comfortable, reliable, and it still looks good 9 years later (IMO). I look forward to owning it for a long time.

I recently purchased a great vehicle, but was initially concerned about the harsh suspension response when encountering large road patches and other irregularities. Before making my final decision, I test drove another car with 18

As a previous owner of two Avalons, I can confidently say that the 2013 model does not meet my expectations. The ride quality is harsh and road noise is noticeable on worn surfaces. Additionally, the headlights cut off too soon on low beam and the seats are uncomfortably hard, making long trips unpleasant. These issues detract from the overall experience of owning an Avalon.

Toyotas will run forever and hybrid design is solid. The car is quiet and the seats are great. Although, the interior build quality could be improved. My headliner warped in the first 4K miles, the dash creaks and pops when you hit a dump and the door panels also creak constantly. As they say, a happy customer tells four people about their experience and an unhappy customer tells 10 people. Unfortunately, I have to sell it at a loss to buy the Ford Fusion. My gut told me to go with the Ford and I should have followed it.

The seating comfort could be improved, as some customers have reported issues with broken plastic backs of front seats. Additionally, there have been some concerns with the sound system and MPG. The original low profile tires may not be suitable for rainy or snowy conditions. Some customers have also reported issues with the ride and front air dam. The tire pressure monitor could be more accurate and some customers have reported needing to add air to the front tires weekly. The battery may not perform well in wintertime and there have been some discrepancies with the gas gauge and speedometer. Finally, the cruise control may not perform optimally on hills. However, the car has some positive features as well, and we appreciate your feedback on areas that could be improved.

If you're a previous Avalon owner, you may notice that the ride of the 2013 model is a bit harsh, especially over small bumps and on worn asphalt roads. Additionally, the headlights have a sharp cutoff that can make reading some road signs difficult. However, the car's stylish design makes a rear view camera a must-have, even though it's only an option (unlike the Honda Accord, which has it as standard). It's worth noting that the touch-sensitive switches can be a bit sensitive, so it's important to be careful when using them.

Our 2013 Avalon has been a bit of a compromise in meeting our expectations for comfort, quasi-sportiness, and initial quality. However, we have found some great features that we love, such as the ample space for 6’-4” legs and the excellent visibility for urban driving conditions. Mechanically, the vehicle is Toyota solid, and the power-plant and powertrain deliver almost exhilarating and smooth performance. While we have found some annoying aspects, such as the mediocre workmanship within the cabin’s interior and distracting road noise, we have found that the ride is still enjoyable. We have experienced some detachment of the headliner at the top edge of the rear window and the sewing/anchoring of the driver-front leather seat (lowest front edge), but we believe that adhesives or sewing can easily fix these issues. Overall, we feel that while the ride may be a tad light, it is still a great car for highway driving in Southern California’s fair weather. We believe that the money spent on this car was worth it, and we would recommend it to others.
