The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2012 Toyota Avalon problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota Avalon 2012, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Engine Misfires:
    • Owners of the 2012 Toyota Avalon have reported cases of engine misfires. This problem causes the vehicle to jerk and hesitate, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing these coils can cost between $5 and $50 plus labor costs. Other potential causes of engine misfires include a malfunctioning control module, crankshaft position sensor, or fuel injector. It is crucial to have the vehicle checked by a licensed mechanic to diagnose and address this issue effectively.
  2. Faulty Oxygen Sensor:
    • Some drivers of the 2012 Avalon redesign have experienced problems with a faulty oxygen sensor. This issue can lead to poor gas mileage, a rough running engine, and potential failure of emissions tests. Replacing the oxygen sensor typically ranges from $30 to $150 plus labor costs. Addressing this problem promptly is essential to maintain the vehicle's performance and compliance with emission standards.
  3. Peeling Paint:
    • Peeling paint off the roof has been a common problem reported by owners of the 2012 Toyota Avalon. Drivers have noted issues where paint bubbles on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof, eventually peeling off in sheets. This problem is often attributed to the lack of primer during the paint application process. While this is primarily a cosmetic concern, it can impact the vehicle's appearance and overall value.
  4. Loss of Engine Oil:
    • Many units of the 2012 Avalon have experienced a common problem with the loss of engine oil. Owners have reported unusual engine noises due to a damaged oil hose that causes oil leaks. In severe cases, this issue can lead to engine failure and necessitate towing the vehicle to a repair shop. Addressing oil leaks promptly is crucial to prevent significant engine damage and maintain the vehicle's performance.

These common problems reported by owners of the Toyota Avalon 2012 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise. By addressing these concerns proactively, owners can ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-20
  • VIN: 4T1BK3DB9CU
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: There is a rear windshield shade that comes up automatically during a bright or hot day. It has a button to manually bring it up or down also. Just last month the gear inside the shade is broken and it does not come down. If I manually put it down it will come up automatically when driving, causing a loud noise distracting the driver even though, the driver has not pressed the button to pull it up. Now it is stuck in up position causing loud noise when reversing. And the biggest safety issue that I see is the night driving. Since the shade is up and I cannot make it go down, the visibility in the rear view mirror is very poor or nothing. There is no way for the driver to let it stay in the down position and driving on overcast days or night time is a challenge with no visibility of vehicles behind you.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-01
  • VIN: 4T1BK3DB7CU
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: REAR DECK SUNSCREEN ACTIVATES AND COMES UP WITHOUT OPERATOR ACTIVATING IT. AND IT WILL NOT GO BACK DOWN WITHOUT MANUAL ASSISTANCE. WITH ASSISTANCE WHEN IT DOES GO DOWN THERE IS A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND THEN IT WILL COME BACK UP. TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION REQUIRES REPLACEMENT OF COMPLETE ASSEMBLY. (DEALER QUOTED $1674.86) OR PULL THE FUSE AND DEACTIVATE THE REAR SUNSCREEN. SAFETY ISSUE IS THAT SUNSCREEN UP AT NIGHT OR DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER RESTRICTS REAR VISION AND DRIVER CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT UNLESS HE HAPPENS TO KNOW WHICH FUSE TO PULL AND WHERE IT IS LOCATED. WHEN ASKED WHY TOYOTA HAS NOT CORRECTED THIS ISSUE, DEALER SPECULATED THAT SINCE THIS IS AN AVALON ONLY PROBLEM THAT THE NUMBERS OF FAILURES ARE LIKELY SMALL. MY RESPONSE WAS, THAT MAY BE TRUE BUT BY RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET, IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE AT LEAST THE MID 1990'S UNTIL AT LEAST 2013 AND PROBABLY BEYOND AND TOYOTA HAS NOT RECALLED OR FIXED THE PROBLEM SO FAR AS I CAN TELL. REGARDS OUR SPECIFIC CAR A 2012 AVALON, IT IS A FEATURE ALMOST NEVER USED AND AS OF THIS DATE THE CAR HAS LESS THAN 18000 MILES ON IT. MILEAGE AND AGE SEEMS NOT TO BE A FACTOR IN THE FAILURES. IT SEEMS MORE LIKELY A POOR DESIGN OF THE FEATURE ITSELF. AS FAR AS WHEN IT HAPPENS AND WHERE, IT CAN HAPPEN ANYTIME THE CAR IS RUNNING, IN THE DRIVEWAY OR WHILE DRIVING..

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-09-14

  • Summary: THE SUBWOOFER RECALL IS BOGUS. WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE IS THAT THEY PUT A PLASTIC COVER AROUND THE SUBWOOFER TO PREVENT WIRES FROM TOUCHING THE CHASSIS; THEY INSTEAD REPLACE THE JBL AMPLIFIER. THE WORK DRASTICALLY ALTERS THE SOUND. I NO LONGER HAVE A PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM; THE NEW AMP CLEARLY DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME WATTAGE AS THE ORIGINAL ONE. LUSTINE TOYOTA AND TOYOTA CORPORATE ARE COPPING OUT AND WON'T FIX IT. THE THING HAS EVEN CUT OUT TWICE. I'M BEYOND PISSED. THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE BEST PART OF THE CAR.

  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the audio system amplifier and install a protective cover around the sub-woofer, free of charge. The recall began on July 1,2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.
  • Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Negative 2012 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Quinn Schulist 2024-11-12

I really love my 2011 Limited Edition! It's even smoother, quieter, and more comfortable than my previous 2008 Touring Model. I was considering a used LS 460 L, but I'm so glad I went with this car instead. The LS L was a great car, but it was a bit out of my budget. Plus, the local Toyota dealer had just purchased a lot of promotional/print matter from us, so it definitely influenced my decision. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase, although there are a few things I'd like to see changed.

I purchased a 2011 Avalon in May 2010, but unfortunately, I have experienced constant issues with dead batteries. Even after jumping the car, I cannot leave it for more than 4 days without encountering the same problem. It is disappointing that I was not informed of this recurring issue with the vehicle, and I have much documentation to support my claim. Despite my efforts, I have been unable to obtain written statements from the manufacturer. The sticker price for the car was $47,000, and the issue began just 10 days after taking possession of the vehicle. While I have had a negative experience with the Toyota Avalon, I encourage others to do their research before making a purchase. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

My family and I have owned every model of Avalon Toyota has ever made. While they may not be the most eye-catching cars, they have always provided great value for money and unbeatable rear legroom. The 2011 model, however, has made some exterior changes that make it look 1000 times better! Unfortunately, the interior seems to have been downgraded. The 'faux-wood' has less shine and looks like a rental car, and the fake brushed metal (plastic) center console is not very attractive and overhangs the rest of the dash by a good inch. The quality of the stitching in the rear seats also seems to have been lowered. I really wanted to like this car based on the tech/look upgrades, but the interior changes are not up to par. Perhaps we can look forward to a new version in 2 years!

I used to own a LeSabre, and while the Avy doesn't have as many features, it still has a smooth ride and good gas mileage. However, I did notice a motor whine and some issues with the windows sticking, and the trunk can be quite loud when closing. Additionally, the information display is quite limited. Overall, I think I'll be going back to Buick for my next car purchase as they offer more value for the money.

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2011 car with 32,000+ miles and I've noticed that the backup camera doesn't show evenly on the navigation screen. It isn't centered on the screen. When I brought this up to the dealer, they told me that all 2011s have this issue. I asked the dealer 5 weeks ago to drive another 2011 to see if that car has the same problem, but so far, they haven't had one to test. If anyone else has experienced this issue, please let me know in the comments. Thank you!

Positive 2012 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Dereck Predovic 2024-11-22

After a year, I am extremely satisfied with this car. The MPG has been superb, averaging around 22 overall and reaching up to 30 MPG at 76 on cruise during highway trips. I absolutely love the safety features, including lane departure warnings, emergency braking, distance adjustment on cruise, and pedestrian alerts. The car is also very comfortable, with suspension adjustment for sporty driving. I am thrilled with this car, which is a big step up from the '12 model. Having now completed two full years with the car, I can confidently say that nothing has changed. It has been bulletproof and always a pleasure to drive. On my last trip, the mileage on the road went up to 31. It is a real cruiser, quiet and comfortable, and you can't beat the price, especially compared to the Lexus ES 350.

  2. Cleo Trantow 2024-11-07

The only negative aspects of the car are that the audio system is a bit lacking and the rear seats don't fold down. However, I absolutely love the seats! The thigh support keeps my legs from getting fatigued, which is a problem I've had with other cars like the Camry. The car just floats down the road and provides Lexus quality at a fraction of the cost. There's tons of leg room and the steering wheel telescopes out far enough (and tilts low enough, think old Buicks) that I can sit back and cruise effortlessly. Even the rear seats have a feature to tilt back a bit! Although the Nav system takes a bit of getting used to, once you get the hang of it, it's quite effective. I've owned the car since new, over five years now, and at almost 80,000 miles, I've had no maintenance issues to speak of. Just regular maintenance (tires, plugs) and I can see my land yacht going 200,000 miles EASY. I absolutely LOVE this car!

Little over 5000 miles, and I must say, the quietness and ride of this vehicle are unbeatable. This is actually our 4th Toyota car, and we have always been impressed with the quality control both inside and out. I never get tired of driving this vehicle!

Congratulations on your new Pearl White/Ivory Limited! It's great to hear that you did your research and found the perfect car for you. The Avalon definitely seems like a great choice, especially with the 4-year warranty and 25,000 mi 2-year free maintenance. It's also wonderful to hear that you're enjoying the improvements from your previous Avalons. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I really enjoyed driving the 2012 Toyota Avalon Limited. The ride was incredibly smooth and I appreciate Toyota's reputation for reliability and longevity. While both models are attractive, the Limited model has every feature I could ever want, making driving it a lot of fun. The interior of the Avalon is both comfortable and elegant, and the safety features provide me with peace of mind in the event of an accident. Although the exterior may not be as flashy as some other models, the interior is impressive and makes driving a truly enjoyable experience.
