2018 Toyota Avalon problems

The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2018 Toyota Avalon problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2018 Toyota Avalon, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  • Worn Oil Hose: A common issue reported by owners is a worn oil hose that, if not addressed promptly, can lead to oil leaks and engine failure. Symptoms of this problem include odd engine noises and the oil pressure light coming on. Toyota announced a Limited Service Campaign to replace the oil hose for free.
  • Worn Pedal Mechanism: Owners have experienced problems with the accelerator pedal sticking due to a smooth sliding surface on the friction level. This issue can lead to unintended acceleration, making it a safety concern. Toyota issued a recall to address this common problem.
  • Headlight Malfunction: Many owners reported random headlight failures, particularly with the high beam headlights. This issue can impact visibility and safety while driving. The exact cause of these malfunctions may vary, but it has been a recurring problem for 3rd-generation Avalon models.
  • Airbag Malfunction: Another reported problem is related to airbag malfunctions, often linked to a component called the clock spring. A worn or old clock spring can trigger the airbag warning light, indicating a potential issue with the airbag system. Experts recommend replacing the airbag once it has been deployed to ensure proper functionality during a collision.
  • Faulty Alternator: Owners have reported issues with the alternator, leading to engine stalling or failure to start, electrical malfunctions, and unusual sounds. Replacing the alternator is the common solution, but it can be a costly repair, potentially exceeding $700 depending on the repair shop.
  • Acceleration Issues: One of the most concerning problems reported by owners is related to acceleration issues. Some owners described instances of the car accelerating uncontrollably or experiencing delays in deceleration. This issue can be caused by various factors like damaged sensors, a faulty catalytic converter, or a misaligned timing belt. Given the safety risks, it is crucial to address acceleration issues promptly.
  • Air Conditioner Problems: While not as serious as other issues, problems with the air conditioning system have been reported. These problems can stem from various causes, ranging from simple fixes to more complex repairs. Most solutions are relatively easy for a mechanic to implement, but they can impact the comfort and usability of the vehicle.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2018 Toyota Avalon highlight various mechanical, safety, and comfort issues that potential buyers should be aware of before purchasing this vehicle.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-12
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4T1BK1EB5JU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Date of safety issue: July 12, 2023 Location: Piper Glen Shopping Center, Rea Road, Charlotte NC (destination was Run For Your Life at 6416 Rea Road - within the shopping center). Time: Approximately sometime between 1:30 and 2:00 ET Police Report Complaint # - [XXX] On July 12, 2023 I entered a parking lot at a busy retail establishment. I chose a parking space that has a curb and bushes between the space and Rea Road. Due to the busyness of the parking lot it is imperative to drive slowly and cautiously. As I turned into the parking space the car suddenly accelerated, jumped the curb and crashed into the bushes. The brake did not stop the car until it jumped the curb. I then put the car in reverse and it again accelerated and the car spun to the left and then finally stopped. Thank God for the curb and the bushes which prevented the car from surging into traffic on Rea Road. And, thank God no one was in the path of the car when the car accelerated in reverse. That was a miracle at this shopping center since it is very busy. I went into Run For Your Life and told them what happened. The salespeople looked on line to see if there were other similar incidents associated with Toyotas, specifically the Avalon model. They printed out 10 pages of incidents over various years. The experience was horrific and clearly the car is dangerous to drive. I called Rock Hill Toyota and spoke with the service advisor I've dealt with for several years. The car was towed to the dealership. The dealership's attitude is another story - very disappointing. A report was made at the dealership with Toyota Brand Engagement. I do not want this car back. Based on my research I found that Toyota cars have a history with the acceleration issue. In some cases there were serious injuries and fatalities. This issue is not resolved. STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-19
  • VIN: 4T1BK1EB1JU
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Hello, My name is [XXX]. I bought my car from Longo Toyota in El Monte about 15 months ago. The car was certified preowned and had a Carfax report with no accident reported history. That is exactly why I bought the car, because this was going to be my family car. So I bought it and have been driving around my daughter, who just turned one for over a year. I also work as a Behavioral Therapist and drive around kids with autism in my car on a daily basis. It wasn’t until I decided to trade in my car that it was discovered that the Avalon car has frame damage, which was discovered by third-party. A car condition expert came to check out the car and discovered the frame damage by using a true frame meter and a paint meter. Now Longo Toyota in El Monte has gave me the go around and hasn't even checked for frame damage. Longo Toyota is asking me how much would I want for my car and asking me about my car's value. There is clear fraud going on, and the fact that this is the largest car dealership in the country makes me wonder how many more people are driving around in cars that have frame damage as well. Best regards, [XXX] “INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-28
  • VIN: 4T1BK1EB1JU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Intermittently, unpredictably, for several seconds at a time, the engine almost quits, especially when accelerating So far, it has not happened in heavy traffic, but if it did, it would create a possibly major safety hazard. I have not taken it to a dealer yet. Just learned about the fuel pump problem that is associated with my 2018 Toyota Avalon. Plan to contact the dealer tomorrow. I have not seen any instrumental warning or notification. There is no warning that the engine is about to lose power and so far the engine has not stopped, but recovers to normal operation.. This has been occurring over the last couple of months. I fear for my wife's safety so that she will be unable to drive this 2018 Toyota Avalon 3.5L sedan until it is repaired.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-21
  • VIN: 4T1BK1EB1JU
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: At approximately 42000 miles with no significant issues and no front end damages, the steering failed as I was driving at highway speed (70 mph) on a 2 lane road approaching a 90 degree curve. The power steering warning light and a separate triangle warning light appeared at the same time as I felt a pop and lost power and response in the steering wheel. Thankfully, I have driven heavy power equipment in the past and was able to control the vehicle to the shoulder and there was no surrounding traffic. I was able to proceed to my residence at a slow speed on the road shoulder with no power steering and an almost unresponsive steering wheel. After being towed to the local dealer, it was determined the torque sensor failed and the entire steering column required replacement. I had no warning of this impending failure. The airbag recall was done on this vehicle by the dealer several weeks prior to this with no reports of an issue. It is unknown if the airbag recall service impacted this catastrophic failure. The dealership was in possession of the faulty part on 8/27/2021, when the repair was completed. I understand there were previous recalls on Avalons pre-2005 for this issue.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-07
  • VIN: 4T1BD1EB1JU
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: THE PRE-COLLISION BRAKING SYSTEM DOES NOT APPEAR TO WORK. SEVERAL TIMES WHEN CARS IN FRONT OF US HAVE SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES, THE PRE-COLLISION BRAKING SYSTEM DOES NOT RESPOND. WE OWN A 2016 PRIUS WITH THE SAME FEATURE AND IT ALWAYS RESPONDS ' FLASHING A WARNING AND APPLYING THE BRAKES. WE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES, AND THEY SAID THE SYSTEM IN OUR CAR PERFORMS A CHECK EVERY TIME WE TURN ON THE CAR AND SINCE IT DOES NOT INDICATE A FAULT, TO THEIR KNOWLEDGE THE SYSTEM IS WORKING FINE. THEY SAID THERE ARE NO OTHER TESTS FOR THEM TO PERFORM. I'VE ADJUSTED THE SYSTEM TO THE MOST SENSITIVE MODE (ACTIVE WHEN VEHICLE IN FRONT OF US IS FURTHER AWAY), BUT THIS HAS HAD NO EFFECT. ALSO, THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL WHICH USES THE SAME RADAR SYSTEM AS THE PRE-COLLISION BRAKING WORKS FINE. THERE DEFINITELY IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE PRE-COLLISION BRAKING, AND I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS SAFETY FEATURE WILL NOT SAVE US FROM A COLLISION. THE ONLY WAY SOMEONE WOULD BE AWARE THAT THE SYSTEM ISN'T WORKING IS TO EXPERIENCE A NEAR COLLISION. I BELIEVE THE PRE-COLLISION BRAKING SYSTEM COULD BE TESTED WITHOUT DAMAGING OUR CAR BY PLACING A LARGE STATIONARY INFLATABLE OBJECT IN FRONT OF OUR MOVING CAR. I WOULD BE GLAD TO PROVIDE OUR CAR FOR YOU TO PERFORM SUCH A TEST OR ANOTHER TEST THAT YOU MAY HAVE DEVELOPED. THIS MAY BE A PROBLEM WITH MANY OTHER TOYOTA AVALONS AND OTHER CARS.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-15
  • VIN: 4T1BD1EBXJU
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY AUTO HIGH BEAMS DAILY FAIL TO WORK CORRECTLY DURING NIGHT TIME DRIVING, THE LOW BEAM WOULD BE ON, THE TURN SIGNAL CONTROL LEVER WILL BE PUSHED ALL THE WAY FORWARD. THE GREEN LIGHT ON THE DASH PANEL IS SHOWING A HEADLIGHT WITH A WORD "AUTO" WOULD ILLUMINATE AND THE HIGH BEAMS WOULD CYCLE ON & OFF AS THEY SHOULD WITH THE AUTO HIGH BEAM SYSTEM. THEN THE GREEN "AUTO" LIGHT WOULD MYSTERIOUSLY GO OFF AND THE HIGH BEAMS WOULD NOT TURN ON ANYMORE EVEN UNDER THE RIGHT CONDITIONS - THIS WOULD LAST FROM THIRTY SECONDS TO ABOUT FIVE MINUTES..THEN THE AUTO HIGH BEAM SYSTEM MYSTERIOUSLY COMES BACK ON AND ALL WORKING CORRECTLY AGAIN. THIS IS ONLY ON NIGHT TIME DRIVING WHEN THE AUTO HIGH BEAM SYSTEM IS TURNED ON WITH THE GREEN AUTO INDICATOR. THIS IS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND MOSTLY ON DARKER / RURAL ROADS WHERE HIGH BEAMS ARE DESIRED. THIS PROBLEM IS WITH THOUSANDS OF TOYOTAS..AND LEXUS ES ALL MODELS AND THE LAST FIVE MODEL YEARS. DEALERS TURN A BLIND EYE TO IT... ALTHOUGH IT IS OFTEN A VERY INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. TOYOTA DEALERS WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE IT... LOOK IN ALL THE TOYOTA ONLINE AUTOMOTIVE FORUMS... IT'S OUT THERE...THIS HAPPENS EVERY AND ANY EVENING WE DRIVE THE CAR AT NIGHT. VERY ANNOYING FOR SURE.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-03-09
  • VIN: 4T1BK1EB8JU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: A. DAY DRIVING IMPAIRED VISIBILITY-REAR WINDSHIELD: A REAR WINDSHIELD VISIBILITY PROBLEM EXISTS WITH THE 2018 TOYOTA AVALON ON SUNNY DAYS.. THE COMBINATION OF THE STEEP ANGLE OF THE REAR WINDSHIELD AND THE LIGHT INTERIOR ON THE BACK DECK BEHIND THE REAR SEATS CREATES A GLARE ONTO THE REAR WINDSHIELD. THE GLARE IS THE REFLECTION OF THE REAR DECK PANEL ONTO THE ENTIRE REAR WINDSHIELD. IT IS A DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVER BECAUSE IT IS DIFFICULT TO SEE CLEARLY CARS APPROACHING FROM BEHIND THROUGH THE REAR VIEW MIRROR. INSTEAD OF LOOKING THROUGH THE REAR WINDOW, THE DRIVER LOOKS AT THE REAR WINDOW WHICH CAUSES MORE DISTRACTION. THIS LACK OF CLEAR VISIBILITY CAN POTENTIALLY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. TOYOTA HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2013 (NHTSA 10505067) AND SHOULD HAVE SOLVED IT. PHOTO IMAGE 5288 CLEARLY SHOWS THE REDUCTION IN VISIBILITY CAUSED BY THE GLARE WHICH APPEARS AS A HAZE ACROSS THE ENTIRE REAR WINDSHIELD. PHOTO IMAGE 5289, PROBLEM MITIGATED BY USING A DARKER INTERIOR (FOR CONTRAST, BLACK TOWEL ON LEFT SIDE) ON THE BACK DECK. B. NIGHT DRIVING IMPAIRED VISIBILITY-REAR WINDSHIELD HEADLIGHTS OF APPROACHING CARS FROM BEHIND SHINE THOUGH THE REAR WINDSHIELD, AND CREATE VERTICAL COLUMNS OF DASHED LINES AS SHOWN IN PHOTO BW1, WITH WINDOW FILM. THESE LINES ARE SPACED IN PROPORTION TO THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE HEATER STRIPS IN THE REAR WINDSHIELD. AND OBSTRUCTS THE DRIVERS VIEW. WITHOUT WINDOW FILM, THIS NIGHT EFFECT IS STILL NOT ELIMINATED AS SHOWN IN PHOTO BW2. TOYOTA HAS BUILT THIS AVALON FROM 2013 THROUGH 2018, AND SHOULD HAVE FIXED THESE DESIGN FLAWS; (1) THE DAYTIME GLARE ON THE REAR WINDSHIELD ON SUNNY DAYS, AND (2) THE NIGHT TIME VERTICAL COLUMN OF DASHES CREATED BY CAR'S HEADLIGHTS SHINING THROUGH THE HEATER STRIPS ON THE REAR WINDSHIELD. A CLAIM HAS BEEN FILED WITH TOYOTA BY THE DEALER, BUT TOYOTA HASN'T GOTTEN BACK TO ME.

  • Summary: THE LANE DEPARTURE BEEPING SIGNAL IS SO WEAK THAT I CAN HARDLY HEAR IT. NORMAL DRIVING NOISE SUCH AS TIRE NOISE, RADIO, CONVERSATION, ETC. USUALLY COMPLETELY DRIVES IT OUT. ON THE BUICK THAT I TRADED IN THE LDA SOUND WAS NORMAL AND ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS I DOZED OFF AND WAS SNAPPED OUT OF IT BY THE BEEPING FROM THE LDA. I AM DISMAYED THAT THIS VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE IS ALL BUT USELESS IN MY NEW TOYOTA. A FRIEND JUST BOUGHT A NEW PRIUS AND HIS VEHICLE HAS THE SAME WEAK LDA VOLUME AS MINE. I LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND SAW COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS APPARENTLY A PROBLEM ON ALL LATE MODEL TOYOTAS. I HAD THIS PROBLEM ON INTERSTATE, OTHER HIGHWAYS AND CITY DRIVING

2018 Toyota Avalon recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2018 Toyota Avalon.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.

On March 19, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include 2015 Lexus GS350 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.

Negative 2018 Toyota Avalon car reviews

This car doesn't have Apple Carplay! I'm switching to Acura TLX.

  2. Justus Green 2024-07-10

This car is subject to a recall for fuel pump failure. However, Toyota has a solution in place, which will be available in a month's time. While waiting for the part, I am currently without transportation. Despite this inconvenience, I remain confident in Toyota's ability to resolve the issue and will continue to consider their vehicles in the future.

  3. Hardy Goyette 2024-07-03

    Encouraging speediness.

I traded in a Buick with Lane Departure Alert and loved that feature. I made sure that my new 2018 Avalon hybrid had LDA, but unfortunately, I did not road test it. During my first trip in my new Toyota, I was disappointed to discover that the volume on the LDA buzzer was too low, making it useless. Unlike the Buick, the buzzer volume on the Toyota is not adjustable. If I had known about this major safety shortcoming, I would not have purchased this vehicle.

I recently purchased a 2018 XLE with 34k miles on it. While the steering and brakes are good, I have noticed that the suspension is quite harsh. Unfortunately, this has made my driving experience less enjoyable and I am considering trading it in for something else in the near future. I understand that this is not a touring model, but the suspension feels like a cross between an F1 car and a 20-year-old utility truck. I hope Toyota can take this feedback into consideration. Thank you.

Congratulations on your fabulous deal! It sounds like you did your homework and made a great choice with your 1-year-old Toyota Avalon. The luxurious appointments and reliable reputation of Toyota make it a great value for your money. As a former Honda Accord owner, it can be tough to make a change, but it sounds like you made the right decision. Enjoy your new ride!

  2. Sydney Stokes 2024-09-29

Hello! Thank you for considering our experience. We recently retired and were not interested in purchasing a car for over $30K. However, we were able to find a great deal on a 2018 Toyota Avalon with only 14K miles for $22K. While it may not have all the fancy features, we are confident in the reliability of the Toyota brand and it still looks great!

Fantastic car! It's luxurious, fun to drive, and has a great design both inside and out. It's built with high quality and I love the chrome accents. The cabin is quiet and I especially love the XM stereo. This is truly the best car I have ever owned.

  5. Bud Rodriguez 2024-05-17

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that your M/G is a bit low. Let's work together to improve it!
