2008 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2008 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon, a full-size sedan, has been a popular choice for those looking for a reliable used car. However, like any vehicle, it has its fair share of problems, particularly in the 2008 model year.
One of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2008 Toyota Avalon is transmission problems. The car may struggle to shift correctly or hesitate when shifting from second to third gear at low speeds. This issue can be particularly frustrating for drivers and may require costly repairs.
Another common problem reported by owners of the 2008 Toyota Avalon is sudden unintended acceleration. This issue has been reported by many 2014 Avalon owners, who have complained that their car would suddenly accelerate for no apparent reason. Experts have suspected electronic issues to be the culprit, causing the throttle to engage without stepping on the gas pedal.
Misfiring engine is also a common problem reported by owners of the 2008 Toyota Avalon. Frustrated owners have complained about misfiring engines, which can cause the sedan to hesitate and jerk, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing the coils may cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
Peeling paint is another issue that has affected the 2008 Toyota Avalon, particularly on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof. This unsightly issue can be particularly frustrating for drivers who want to keep their car looking its best.
Faulty alternator is also a common problem reported by owners of the 2008 Toyota Avalon. This issue can cause the engine to stall out at odd times or prevent the car from starting altogether. Electrical issues may also occur, causing normal power functions to malfunction. The most common remedy to this issue is to get an alternator replacement, which can cost upwards of $700 depending on the shop.
In addition to these common problems, the 2008 Toyota Avalon has also been subject to 6 recalls, including issues with the accelerator pedal and airbag inflator. This is a significant number of recalls, and any used 2008 Avalon on the market is still subject to the necessary repairs.
Despite these common problems, the Toyota Avalon has a reliability rating of 4 out of 5, ranking 3rd out of 12 full-size sedans. However, it is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to consider the potential costs of repairs before purchasing a used 2008 Toyota Avalon.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-14
- VIN: 4T1BK36B48U
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Because my instrument panel is alway illuminated, I was unaware that I was driving one night without my lights on. Now I know why I see more cars at night without their lights. Manufacturers need to fix this problem. Older cars would not turn on the panel lights if the headlights weren't on. You would think this would be an easy technology fix with since we have self driving cars now.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-04
- VIN: 4T1BK36B08U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: OEM high beam bulbs continuously explode. I’m not saying they just burn out, these bulbs shatter, and send shards of glass on the inside of the headlamp housing. I believe it’s a big safety risk, because for me, it happened while I was driving late at night in the dark where there are deer nearby. Brights are essential to see far and when you’re driving through hills, going up a hill you need your brights to extend higher than your normal lights do. This is a commonly complained about problem for the 2008-2010 models of this Toyota Avalon. Toyota has issued a technical service bulletin back in 2011, but it is a major defect and I believe it should be fixed regardless of whether a customer pays for a warranty or not. A mechanic told me also that they are not sure why Toyota has not warrantied vehicles with this issue. The solution is replacing the headlight housing. So there is clearly a material defect, and I believe it affects safety. Vehicles are required to have high beam headlights for a reason, and the high beams on this vehicle burn out commonly on certain vehicles, and replacing bulbs does NOT solve the problem. It is a very expensive repair as well. What kind of car manufacturer doesn’t recall or acknowledge a material defect or design flaw in such a crucial safety feature or a vehicle such as headlights? It’s an expensive, annoying, and dangerous issue that continues to happen. There are so many complaints about this high beam issue for the 2008 year. In my mind this really reduces Toyotas reputation and credibility since they did not and will not recall these headlights. We just have to deal with their faulty design. Fix your mistakes instead of making customers foot the bill for your poor craftsmanship. This is pathetic.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-02
- VIN: 4T1BK36BX8U
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: This car has a rear window shade that started going up on its on when it is hot outside. I could not locate this feature in the owners manual. I did read that a safety feature for the shade is that when car is placed in reverse the shade is automatically closed. This feature has stopped working, in fact the shade now will not even lower. I used to be able to manually assist the shade down while someone would press the switch but down it raises back up almost immediately. I checked with Google and apparently this is a common problem. I have finally pulled the fuse to keep the shade down permanently.

ASKED IF I HAD TAKEN IT TO DEALER BUT THEY WOULD CHARGE FOR DIAGNOSIS, I TOLD HER I WOULD NOT BE DOING THAT. MY MECHANIC HAS REFERRED ME TO ANOTHER SHOP WITH A CERTIFIED A TOYOTA MASTER MECHANIC, WILL SEE WHAT HE HAS TO SAY. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY PROBLEM TO SAY THE LEAST AND DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY TOYOTA REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE IT AND STEP UP TO CORRECT PROBLEM. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND OBVIOUSLY I AM NOT ONLY ONE WHO IS VERY CONCERNED.

ONCE I SHOW THE OFFICER BY TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN BACK ON THE LIGHT IS ON. THE LIGHT DOESNT STAY ON ONCE TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF THEN ON. WITHIN A FEW MILES IT GOES OFF AGAIN AND IT IS CONSTANTLY BLOWING THE LIGHT BULBS. IN THE 3 YEARS I HAVE HAD MY CAR I HAVE REPLACED THE LIGHTS AT LEAST 7 TIMES. THE LIGHT WILL ALWAYS BE OFF WHEN I START MY CAR WITH THE REMOTE STARTER AND WHEN I START IT WITH THE IGNITION IF IT'S ON, WITHIN A FEW MILES OF DRIVING IT GOES OFF AGAIN.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-01-01
- VIN: 4T1BK36B68U
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-05-15
- VIN: 4T1BK36BX8U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: FROM THE DAY I PURCHASED USED VEHICLE IN 2015, I'VE EXPERIENCED HEADLIGHTS THAT FLICKER AND GO OFF ONLY TO BE FULLY ILLUMINATED BY TURNING OFF THEN BACK ON. MOSTLY, IT'S THE DRIVER SIDE AND SOMETIMES THE PASSENGER SIDE; INFREQUENTLY, BOTH HEADLIGHTS ARE AFFECTED. I'VE SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR A SOLUTION AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR REPORTS WITH 'SOLUTIONS' RANGING FROM SIMPLE FEW DOLLARS TO ABOVE $1000. MY LOCAL DEALER HAD THE CAR ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASIONS...TO NO AVAIL AND WAS WILLING TO 'FIX' IT FOR $1200. BECAUSE OF THE NUMBER OF SIMILARLY DESCRIBED ON INTERNET FORUMS, I THINK THAT TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THE VEHICLES IF, FOR NO OTHER REASON, THAN THAT THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-02
- VIN: 4T1BK36B28U
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I HAVE HAD CONTINUOUS PROBLEMS WITH EITHER ONE OR BOTH FRONT HEADLIGHTS GOING OFF RANDOMLY. THIS HAPPENS ALMOST DAILY AND I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO THE SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AS ON OCCASION I DO NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THE LIGHTS ARE OFF. ADDITIONALLY, I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE AND ISSUED A WARNING WITH THE EXCEPECTATION THAT THE PROBLEM WILL BE FIXED. THIS POSES ANOTHER GREAT CONCERN AS THE MECHANIC HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE, THEREFORE, IT CANNOT BE FIXED. THE MECHANIC HAS ALSO REACHED OUT TO THE DEALER AS WELL AS OTHER MECHANICS ALONG WITH CONDUCTING HIS OWN RESEARCH ALL TO NO AVAIL. DURING MY RESEARCH, I DISCOVERED NUMEROUS COMPLIANTS STATING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS THAT I AM EXPERIENCING, ALSO WITH NO RESOLVE OR REMEDY. I AM SHOCKED THAT TOYOTA WOULD PLACE PEOPLE IN SUCH DANGER AND NOT TAKE ANY ACTION TO RECTIFY THIS VERY SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU MAY BE ABLE TO PROVIDE.

THIS CONTINUED FOR ABOUT A WEEK SO I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD BE ABOUT $400 TO TAKE OFF THE REAR DECK JUST TO SEE WHAT THE ACTUAL PROBLEM WAS. I HAVE SEEN MULTIPLE AVALON'S WITH THIS SAME UNSAFE ISSUE. THE VEHICLE ALSO WILL NOT PASS STATE SAFETY INSPECTIONS WITH THIS ISSUE.I THINK AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE CONDUCTED ON THIS HIGHLY UNSAFE ISSUE.

- Summary: LOW BEAM LIGHTS RANDOMLY GO OUT AFTER BEING ON FOR A SHORT TIME. I'VE BEEN BATTLING THIS ISSUE SINCE 2013 WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR. THE DEALER SAYS MY LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS ARE BURNT OUT. I CAN TURN THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH OFF AND BACK ON QUICKLY AND THE AFFECTED LIGHT COMES BACK ON. I DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES A DAY WHEN IT IS DARK OUT. I EVEN HAD SMALL LED LIGHTS MOUNTED INTO MY DASH AND WIRED INTO EACH LOW BEAM BULB SO I CAN SEE IF ONE GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING IN TOWN AT NIGHT AS IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO KNOW IF ONE WHEN OUT.

I LATER LEARNED FROM A MECHANIC THAT THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW OR INFERIOR MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLLING THE HEADLIGHTS AND THAT THE LOW BEAMS COULD ALSO SUDDENLY GO OUT WHILE IN MOTION. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE. THE TOYOTA CORPORATION WILL NOT STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT AND HAVE REFERRED ME TO A TOYOTA DEALER THAT WANTS OVER $2,000.00 TO FIX THE SAFETY ISSUE. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS. I BELIEVE IT ONLY AFFECTS THE 2008 AVALON MODELS. THERE ARE EVEN SEVERAL ARTICLES ON THE INTERNET RELATING TO THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE NOTHING TO DOWNLOAD AS I DID NOT GET A WRITTEN ESTIMATE, ONLY A TELEPHONE QUOTE, FROM THE TOYOTA DEALER.

- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
- Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

I have a Toyota Venza, which belongs to my father. At first, I thought it was just a slow, floaty old man car, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's not slow and floaty at all, and it's pretty agile for its size. The ride is very comfortable, even with the touring suspension, which is a big improvement from my 2010 Venza. Although there is still some body roll, I appreciate its stability. The HID headlamps are cool, but they can be expensive in the long run. I do wish the display for the radio and climate controls were a bit better, but overall, I really like the color scheme - Blue Mirage exterior and Black leather interior.

I have a Toyota 2008 Avalon limited which is a great car overall, but there are a few things that could be improved. The front seat might feel a bit tight for larger drivers, and the center console can make it difficult to spread your right leg during long drives. The navigation system could also be better, as it can be difficult to use and not as user-friendly as some $300 add-ons. Additionally, the laser cruise control might not be the best investment, as it can be too conservative for normal highway driving, and I often find myself overriding it. Finally, the low ground clearance can be a bit of a concern, as I have had to reattach the front underbody protection several times after parking. It seems that the clearance is only 5.3 inches, which is quite low.

Smooth, quiet, and soft ride. Very reliable.

My 2008 Avalon XLS is a stunning car with a smooth ride and impressive horsepower. However, I have noticed some chips on the hood despite the car only having 11,000 miles on it. In comparison, my 2001 Tahoe with 136,000 miles has zero chips on the hood. It appears that the paint or application process may be subpar, or perhaps the clear coat is too thin. While this is my only complaint, it is a significant one.

No issues. The car drives great and has good tires. Additionally, it gets great gas mileage!

If you are looking for a reliable car, you may want to consider other options besides the Avalon. Some drivers have reported issues with the transmission and traction control, which may affect the car's performance in certain weather conditions. Additionally, some drivers have experienced problems with exterior trim mouldings and the sound system. It's important to carefully consider your options before making a purchase. Thank you for considering this information.

The vehicle's fuel efficiency has decreased by 10 mpg. Additionally, in snowy conditions, the wheels may lose traction, causing the computer to intervene and limit power to the wheels. Despite this, the vehicle's engine remains responsive and the transmission functions as intended.

I have always been a Toyota customer and have owned several of their vehicles. However, I recently had a negative experience at Marietta Toyota on Cobb Parkway. The service center did not meet my expectations and I was disappointed with the customer service. I had an issue with a headlight on my 2008 Avalon, which I felt should have been covered under warranty, but unfortunately it was not. I am now considering other car brands, such as Hyundai, which offer longer warranties and more affordable options. While I am disappointed with my recent experience, I am still open to considering Toyota in the future.

The car had an oil leak which made it difficult for the dealer to determine the source. However, the issue was resolved by replacing the block. Although the paint does not match and the fenders do not meet the bumpers as well as expected for a top of the line Toyota, I am confident that the issue will be resolved. Overall, I believe that this car has great potential and I would recommend it to others.
