2005 Toyota Avalon problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 LEXUS RX, AND MODEL YEAR 2006 LEXUS GS AND IS VEHICLES. BRAKE FLUID CONTAINING POLYMERS IS USED THAT ACTS AS LUBRICANTS FOR CERTAIN BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. IF REPLACEMENT BRAKE FLUID IS USED THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN SUCH POLYMERS, OR THAT CONTAINS ONLY SMALL AMOUNTS, A PART OF THE RUBBER SEAL LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER MAY BECOME DRY, AND THE SEAL MAY CURL DURING MOVEMENT OF THE PISTON. IF THIS OCCURS, A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID COULD SLOWLY LEAK FROM THE SEAL INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
- Consequence: A LEAK OF BRAKE FLUID COULD LEAD TO A CHANGE IN BRAKE PEDAL FEEL AND OVERTIME A DEGRADATION IN BRAKING PERFORMANCE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SEAL WITH A NEWLY DESIGNED ONE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331 AND LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 AVALON, MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 CAMRY, MODEL YEAR 2009-2010 COROLLA, COROLLA MATRIX, RAV4, MODEL YEAR 2010 HIGHLANDER, MODEL YEAR 2008-2010 SEQUOIA, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 TUNDRA VEHICLES. DUE TO THE MANNER IN WHICH THE FRICTION LEVER INTERACTS WITH THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSIDE THE PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY, THE SLIDING SURFACE OF THE LEVER MAY BECOME SMOOTH DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. IN THIS CONDITION, IF CONDENSATION OCCURS ON THE SURFACE, AS MAY OCCUR FROM HEATER OPERATION (WITHOUT A/C) WHEN THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY IS COLD, THE FRICTION WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS OPERATED MAY INCREASE, WHICH MAY RESULT IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMING HARDER TO DEPRESS, SLOWER TO RETURN, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION.
- Consequence: THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY BECOME HARD TO DEPRESS, SLOW TO RETURN TO IDLE, OR, IN THE WORST CASE, MECHANICALLY STUCK IN A PARTIALLY DEPRESSED POSITION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REINFORCEMENT BAR IN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHICH WILL ALLOW THE PEDAL TO OPERATE SMOOTHLY. GM WILL NOTIFY OWNERS FOR THE PONTIAC VIBE PLEASE SEE 10V-018. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AND WILL BE COMPLETED ON MARCH 15, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
- Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
- Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
- Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER ASSEMBLY OF THE AIR BAG INFLATOR, WHICH IS USED IN THE SIDE AIR BAG, THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG, AND THE KNEE AIR BAG ASSEMBLY, SOME INFLATORS WERE PRODUCED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF THE HEATING AGENTS NECESSARY FOR PROPER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.
- Consequence: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 6, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE STEERING YOKE WAS NOT WELDED TO THE STEERING SHAFT. IF THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN THIS CONDITION, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE YOKE MAY COME OFF FROM THE SHAFT, AND COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF VEHICLE STEERING CONTROL.
- Consequence: LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING YOKE AND SHAFT WELD CONDITION, AND REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 2, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

You'll find a great balance between performance, size, and fuel economy in this car. The power is impressive, and the interior is spacious, especially the rear seating. The ride is smooth and quiet, although it can feel a little floaty while driving. Unfortunately, we did experience some issues with the inside trim, with fasteners on the window switch housing popping up. This raises concerns about the interior's durability and craftsmanship. However, I believe the engine, transmission, and drive components will prove reliable. The leather seems to be of a lower grade than my old Acura Legend, but that seems to be the trend with newer cars using thinner leather. One downside is that a nice chunk of paint came off when a large rock hit the front. Additionally, the large doors and higher rear end make it harder to see while backing up and merging. Overall, this car has a lot of great features and is definitely worth considering.

I've had my Avalon Limited for two weeks now and it's been an amazing experience. The car is simply the best I've ever had, with its comfortable interior, luxurious amenities, and powerful engine that makes freeway driving a breeze. I especially love the overall look of the car, especially the cabin. It came with some great features like DVD NAV, VSC, and Laser Link Cruise Control, which have all been a pleasure to use. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handled on mountain roads, and I think the VSC definitely played a role in that. While I'm still getting used to the NAV system and the Laser Link Cruise Control, I'm confident that I'll get the hang of it soon. The dealer even installed a satellite radio for me, which looks great with the antenna on the vehicle centerline half an inch above the rear window instead of on the trunk lid. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the Avalon Limited to anyone looking for a top-of-the-line car.

A great car for the money! You can use it as a nice commuter car and still have enough room to carry the family when needed. The gas mileage is impressive considering the amount of horsepower available.

I love my Avalon! It looks and drives great, and has so many amazing features that make driving it a joy. When I was searching for a new sedan, I wanted something that was both stylish and reliable, and the Avalon definitely fit the bill. The performance is top-notch, with smooth acceleration and easy-to-use controls. While I did experience a few rattles in the first couple of months of ownership, overall this vehicle has been problem-free. I highly recommend the Avalon to anyone in the market for a new sedan!

The 2005 Avalon is a much better car than the 1996 Avalon it replaced. I really love the new engine with 280 hp but I need to ease up on my right foot to get better mileage. It's been interesting to see the real-time miles-per-gallon and how driving in stop-and-go traffic reduces the average mpg.

I am extremely disappointed with the car's build quality and engineering. Despite paying over 37 grand for this car, I have experienced numerous problems, including an ignition glitch in the first week, slow transmission response which has been dangerous at times, and the loss of coins and a small sticker in the gap behind the rear seat. While the interior looks great, the car's mileage is only okay for a big car, and nowhere near the EPA rating. Although the engine is nice when you hold the throttle down for a second or two, the initial acceleration is weak, which is a fault of the transmission. In comparison, my former big car (Buick) got much better mileage.

You've got yourself a great car! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it. I understand that the tires can be a bit pricey to replace, but it's worth it for the quality of the ride. The rear seats are spacious and comfortable, and the car has a lot of power. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I purchased my vehicle new and after approximately two years, I noticed a problem with starting the engine. Despite there being no pattern to the problem, the dealer claims that the issue is due to my foot not being firmly held on the brake pedal when starting. I find it puzzling that it took two years for this to become a problem. The dealer has kept my vehicle on two occasions for several days and claims that it never failed to start. However, they have also stated that they have never seen this problem before and do not know where to look for the problem. Similarly, Toyota has been unable to provide a solution. I find it surprising that Toyota 'engineers' cannot provide a fix for this problem. Despite this issue, I have also noticed a small oil leak at 1000 miles. Rest assured, I will be exploring other options for my next vehicle purchase.

Maybe my expectations were a bit too high, but I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be. Unfortunately, the rear view mirror can't be adjusted due to its placement hitting the ceiling, and the paint is peeling. Additionally, the front has some mysterious issues that no one seems to be able to diagnose, including random jerking. Speaking of jerking, the transmission does it too when it wants. On the bright side, I do appreciate the quiet cabin, the amazing sound system, the safety features, and the impressive gas mileage. I've even gotten as much as 31.5 on the highway! However, I do think that Toyota started cutting corners on many of their vehicles starting in 05. For my next car, I'm thinking GERMAN, even if they require more maintenance.

My experience with Toyota has been disappointing. Despite owning a reliable Previa van in the past, my current car has required frequent visits to the dealer for various repairs, including replacement of the intermediate steering column, repair of a faulty air bag system (which involved disassembly of the entire interior), oil leak, and premature cracking wear of the driver side leather seat. Even after these repairs, the faulty air bag light has come back on, which is unacceptable. However, I am confident that Toyota will address these issues and improve the quality of their cars.
