2000 Toyota Avalon problems

The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-10
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4T1BF28B9YU
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED ON FEBRUARY 10, 2015 WHILE I WAS DRIVING TO WORK, I TOOK THIS RAMP AT 30 MPH WHICH IS A LEFT TUNING CURVE THAT TAKES YOU TO THE HIGHWAY. AT THE END OF THE RAMP I HAD TO GRADUALLY ACCELERATE AND MAKE A MODERATE RIGHT TURN TO JOIN THE HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. AFTER FINISHING THE RIGHT TURN, I COULDN'T KEEP THE CAR RUNNING STRAIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY. THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED AND I WASN'T ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE KEPT ON GOING THE RIGHT TURN AND CRASHED INTO A GUARD RAIL CAUSING THE BUMPER COVER, BUMPER REINFORCEMENT, WIND SHIELD WASHER TANK, FRONT BUMPER GRILL AND LEFT AND RIGHT LIGHTS TO BE DAMAGED. THE STEERING SYSTEM AND ITS COMPONENTS ARE IN GOOD WORKING CONDITION. THIS ACCIDENT HAPPENED BECAUSE "STEERING INTERLOCK ASSEMBLY" RECALL OF JULY 29, 2010 (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V345000) WAS NOT DONE TO MY 2000 TOYOTA AVALON. TOYOTA DID NOT NOTIFY ME OF THIS RECALL. I BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THERE ARE VEHICLES LIKE MINE THAT BEING DRIVEN ON THE STREETS WITHOUT THE STEERING INTERLOCK ASSEMBLY RECALLS TAKEN CARE OF. THE CONSEQUENCE OF THE RECALL STATES THAT: SHOULD THE STEERING LOCK BAR BREAK, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD LOCK AND THE DRIVER WOULD LOSE THE ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. TOYOTA FAILED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE THAT I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT. TOYOTA PERFORMED AN INSPECTION WHICH NOT RELATED TO THE STEERING COLUMN RECALL. PLEASE HELP THE STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY BE INSPECTED. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-28
  • VIN: 4T1BF28B9YU
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: CAR WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE. I NOTICED THAT THE EYEGLASS COMPARTMENT THAT IS LOCATED INSIDE THE CAR BETWEEN THE TWO FRONT VISORS WAS HANGING DOWN AND COVERING THE INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR. I TRIED TO CLOSE IT SHUT BY PUSHING IT UP INTO PLACE, BUT IT KEPT FALLING DOWN. I PUT ON MASKING TAPE TO KEEP IT CLOSED, SINCE I DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE WITHOUT THE USE OF MY INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR. THAT SAME DAY, I HAD AN APPOINTMENT TO GET NEW TIRES AT AN AUTO REPAIR PLACE. I DROVE DIRECTLY THERE AND ASKED THE AUTO MECHANIC TO REMOVE THE COMPARTMENT COVER ENTIRELY. HE REMOVED THE COVER, IT WAS HELD IN PLACE WITH TWO LITTLE SCREWS, AND HE ALSO FOUND IN THE CAR A TINY PIECE OF ALUMINUM, IN A V SHAPE, THAT MUST HAVE BEEN PART OF THE COMPARTMENT LOCKING MECHANISM. I HAVE HAD THIS CAR FOR 14 YEARS AND NEVER HAVE PUT ANYTHING IN THAT COMPARTMENT. I MAY HAVE OPENED IT ONCE TO SEE HOW IT WORKED WHEN I FIRST GOT THE CAR. I AM GLAD THAT THIS DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC, AND THAT THIS COVER IS NOW COMPLETELY GONE FROM THE CAR. THIS CAR DOES HAVE VERY LOW MILEAGE. *TR

Negative 2000 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Lew Abernathy 2025-01-04

When considering purchasing a Toyota V6, it's important to be aware of the potential engine sludge issue. However, I have had a positive experience with my Avalon and would recommend it.

  2. Dexter Dooley 2024-05-16

I've had my car for almost three months now and unfortunately, I've experienced some issues with the suspension. The car is great on smooth roads, but on bumpy ones, it feels like I'm rocking and rolling. Additionally, the car is advertised as a five-passenger vehicle, but it seems that it can only accommodate passengers who weigh less than a pound. When there are passengers in the back seat, the car bottoms out and scrapes the road over any bumps. It's disappointing that Toyota considers this to be 'normal'. I was surprised to learn that this is a known issue with the Avalon and Toyota has yet to address it. It seems that they have made a compromise on the suspension.

  3. Darwin Luettgen 2024-03-17

It sounds like you're experiencing a few issues with your car. The sun shining from above and behind is reflecting on the instrument cluster glass and back into your eyes, which can be quite distracting. Additionally, it seems that you're unable to shut the center air vents without turning off all four vents, which can be uncomfortable if the cold air is directed towards your right arm or bald head. Lastly, it's difficult to read the info panel unless the sun is shining directly on it, which can be dangerous as it requires you to take your eyes off the road. I hope this information helps you address these issues and make your driving experience more comfortable and safe.

Positive 2000 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Freddy Halvorson 2025-01-05

This car has been in my family for almost 8 years now and is still going strong. It rides and drives wonderfully, and the only problem we've had with it was with the automatic choke a couple years ago; we took it to our local Toyota dealer and had it fixed. The mileage is pretty good (about 23/city and 28/highway) for a car of its age. It has withstood rough roads and has over 170,000 miles on it. We took it on one trip to Disney World (16-ish hours total) and one trip to Savannah, GA (18-ish hours total), and it was driven several miles to work and back most of the time with no problems. All in all, this car is a downright champion!

  2. Kraig Brown 2024-11-28

Our 2000 Toyota Avalon is the best car we have owned. It has a smooth ride, excellent handling, and great pick-up. It's a solid and safe car for families, with very comfortable seats.

  3. Raleigh Wisoky 2024-11-17

For those who may not know, the Toyota Avalon 2000 has the same engine and transmission as the Lexus ES 300. It is incredibly quiet and comfortable, with plenty of room. Additionally, it is very dependable. I have only experienced one electrical problem with the side airbag sensor malfunctioning, which I believe may be due to it being manufactured in the USA where quality control may not be as tight as it is in Tokyo. I took my car to the Toyota dealer to have this issue resolved. Other than that, the car is really great and a pleasure to drive. It handles great on the road, although the brakes and audio system (XL-ONLY) could be better. I highly recommend it to everyone!

  4. Edmund D'Amore 2024-11-05

When my new 2000 Acura TL arrived, I had trouble getting comfortable in the driver's seat due to my height and weight. As a result, I decided to cancel the deal and purchased the Avalon XLS instead. Although I initially thought it was unattractive and a compromise, I now appreciate its classic look and clean lines. Additionally, it has been completely trouble-free. While ride comfort is a priority, I found that upgrading the shocks (KYB), tires (Michelin Exalto 225/50x16), and brake pads (Red Stuff) made a huge difference. The front seat is incredibly spacious and has spoiled me for other cars that are otherwise very good.

Your car is amazing! It's hard to believe it's already six years old because it still looks and drives like it's brand new. You must have taken great care of it! Not only is it smooth riding, but it also has plenty of room for all passengers and lots of trunk space. The interior and exterior are both beautifully designed and appointed. You made an excellent choice with this car!
