The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.

Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.

As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2019 Toyota Avalon problems

The 2019 Toyota Avalon has been reported to have several common problems by its owners, primarily related to the fuel system, electrical issues, and transmission.

  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems have been reported by several 2019 Avalon owners, such as the car's lights going out unexpectedly, which can lead to safety concerns. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and may require professional assistance to resolve.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are another common complaint among 2019 Avalon owners, with some reporting difficulty shifting or hesitation between gears.
  • Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Some 2014 Avalon owners have reported sudden unintended acceleration, which is suspected to be caused by electronic issues, leading to the throttle engaging without stepping on the gas pedal.
  • Misfiring Engine: Frustrated owners of 1995-2010 and 2012 Avalons have complained about misfiring engines, primarily due to faulty ignition coils. Replacing the coils may cost between $5-$50 plus labor.
  • Peeling Paint: This issue mainly affects the 2011 Avalon, but it has also been reported in other models. Drivers reported that the paint on the roof and between the windshield and sunroof would bubble up and eventually peel, costing around $1,100 to fix.
  • Faulty Alternator: Toyota Avalon alternator problems have been commonly reported by owners, with symptoms such as engine stalling, electrical issues, and unusual sounds. The most common remedy is to get an alternator replacement, which can cost upwards of $700 depending on the shop.
  • Air Conditioner Problems: Another common Toyota Avalon problem revolves around the air conditioning system. The cause of these problems can be a number of things, ranging from something as simple as a refrigerant leak to a more complex issue with the compressor or evaporator.

While these problems can be frustrating for 2019 Toyota Avalon owners, it is important to note that Toyota vehicles are generally reliable, and most issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and repairs. If you are considering purchasing a used 2019 Avalon, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic to identify any potential issues before making a purchase.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: After troubleshooting, the issue with my car cannot communicate with my mobile app through Toyota remote connect, cannot update vehicle software, and after a $130 diagnostic fee, the dealer states the DCM module is bad and needs replacing. My question is this is a safety issue, correct?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-01
  • VIN: 4T1BZ1FB5KU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: A year ago my 2019 Toyota Avalon started displaying a message that the RCD (rear camera detection) was unavailable. I tried working with the dealership that sold me the car, but they ignored me. I went to another Toyota dealership and they said it would cost approximately $2000, but could not guarantee it would fix the issue. I’ve seen online that 1000’s of Toyota owners with the same system have had similar problems, and Toyota frequently responds with, “It’s a rolling computer, and very advanced.” Some were fixed by recalibration, but many have a more serious problem. All the stories are only the people that have posted about it. It’s probably Toyota’s biggest problem. My car was under warranty when it began, but health issues and restrictions kept me from getting the attention of the general manager since I was ignored by others. I feel this is serious enough and has effected numerous people that it warrants an investigation. People are relying on a system that doesn’t work properly, and some have been hurt and many others will be negatively affected by it.

The contact proceeded to his destination and shifted the vehicle into park (P) but did not engage the parking brake for fear that it might not disengage. The contact drove the vehicle to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that there had been a malfunction of the Parking Brake or Cruise Control Malfunction warning message on the MID (multi-information display) with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) C13B0 (Electric Parking Brake ECU Malfunction) NHTSA ID Number: 10172860 (Parking Brake). The contact was advised that the remedy required a software update of the ECU. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,500.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-26
  • VIN: 4T1BZ1FBXKU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY
  • Summary: 2019 Toyota Avalon XSE with 41,400 miles. Complete failure of the Climate Control Panel. No buttons or lights would work, resulting in lack of any fan, heat, air conditioning, window defroster, mirror defroster or seat heat. Found no fuses blown. On one occasion since then both seat heat lights came on indicating full heat but did not produce any heat. Two days later Panel began to work normally for a 1 hour drive. Later this day there was another complete failure of the same panel. Took car to dealership the next day and panel functioned normally enroute. When dealership diagnosed the problem the Climate Control Panel had failed again and the problem could not be duplicated. No trouble codes were stored in the system. They performed a master reset of the system thinking an update may have been corrupt. Panel worked when leaving the dealership later this day. The next morning the Panel initially did not work, but 20 minutes into a 1 hour drive it started working normally. That evening the Panel failed again on vehicle startup and has not worked since. Took it back to the dealership this morning and did not turn vehicle off, thinking the failure might show up in the car’s system until the service advisor could drive it to a maintenance bay. After 3 hours the problem could not be diagnosed. The lead mechanic contacted Toyota corporate to inquire if this problem has been encountered previously and for a possible solution. Overall this may not be a safety issue warranting any further action. However, if the windows or mirrors were to fog up, there would be no defroster capability for either of these. In this situation it could quickly become a dangerous situation while the vehicle is moving. This should be investigated further.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-03
  • VIN: 4T1BZ1FB6KU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The sunroof of my 2019 Toyota Avalon is defective. It is available for inspection upon request. My safety, as well as the safety of my passengers, has been put at risk. My problem has been confirmed by Sheehy Toyota of Fredericksburg. No warning lamps or messages to indicate sunroof problem. The driver side of my sunroof keeps clogging. I first took my vehicle to Toyota Sheehy of Fredericksburg on 1/3/2023. Sunroof tray was found to have a buildup of organic detritus, causing drains of sunroof tray to be clogged and allowing rainwater to spill over into interior. Sheehy technician cleared the sunroof tray and drains of organic material. Drains were now flowing properly. Technician claimed that sunroof would not have to be drained for at least two years. There was standing water and a heavy mildew smell in the car. Sheehy refused to clean/drain carpet of water. I took it to a detailer and had the detailer vacuum and clean the carpet. Less than a month later, I started experiencing the same issues -- wet carpeting on the floorboard. I took my vehicle to Sheehy Toyota of Fredericksburg on 2/7/2023. Technician told me that the driver side of the sunroof was clogged. Technician claimed that he fixed the clogged drain of the sunroof. Technician suggested that my sunroof got clogged because I have only driven my car 140 miles this month. Not a rational explanation. He recommended that I replace the carpet due to mold concerns. Why would I replace the carpet if there is a strong possibility of having wet carpet every few weeks? Technician insists that wet floor is not coming from any source other than the sunroof. I suspect that my sunroof is defective. I should not have to worry about wet carpet in my car everyday that we experience rainshowers. Sheehy Toyota insists that nothing is wrong with the structural integrity of the sunroof and that external factors are to blame.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-28
  • VIN: 4T1BZ1FBXKU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On the morning of Sept. 28, 2022, after my wife arrived home from work the previous night, and as I walked past her car, I heard the fuel pump running. The engine was not running, all switches were off and the doors were locked. I retrieved the key fob for the car, unlocked the doors, and entered the car. Upon pushing the start button, the fuel pump shut off, then the engine started. I let it run for one minute then shut the engine off. At this time the fuel pump shut off as well. To my knowledge the fuel pump has not continued to run, after the engine was shut off, since then. There have been 2 NHTSA Campaigns recalling the fuel pumps on these vehicles, # 20V01200 and # 20V68200. When I contacted the dealership where she purchased the Avalon in January 2022 the service adviser stated the fuel pump in her car was replaced Nov. 13, 2020. There may still be a problem with the Denso fuel pumps in these vehicles. If the fuel pump continues to run like this one did, and the fuel level in the tank is not high enough to properly cool the pump, it could possibly overheat and cause a fire. I would suspect this has occurred in more than just this 1 vehicle. To err on the side of safety I believe there should be another recall to replace the fuel pump. If not that, then a recall should be initiated to check the vehicle software for a programming malfunction that would cause the fuel pump to continue to run with the engine shut off.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-17
  • VIN: 4T1B21FB7KU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: There is a bad smell coming from the air ducting especially when the AC is set to recycle the cabin air. The smell is so nauseating that you have to roll the windows down while driving down the road or parked. The Toyota dealership charged me $155 +/- to clean the ducting on a less than 2-year-old car with approximately 35,000 mi on it. I'm not sure how long their cleaning service will keep the smell removed. I've owned multiple vehicles in my lifetime and never encountered this problem. This should not be happening on a new vehicle.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-10
  • VIN: 4T1B21FB9KU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: This incident has happened twice in three years. Hence it is a very rare occurrence. Both times involved the same events. Cruise control was on. I was traveling in the left lane of the interstate highway, approaching an 18-wheel truck which was in the right lane. When I was approximately 50 feet from the rear of the truck, the truck began to enter my lane. I suspect I was in the trucker's blind spot. My car did not sense the truck. The cruise control did not disengage. The brakes did not engage. But the MOST troublesome was that the car did not respond to my pressing on the brake pedal. I had to press 4 or 5 times before the cruise control would disengage and the brakes engage. Since I was traveling approximately 70 mph, the distance between my car and the truck (each time) closed rapidly. In the first instance, the truck tire hit my right front fender. I moved to the shoulder of the road and eventually the car braked. In the second case, I avoided collision by about 10 feet. I use the cruise control frequently and in EVERY other circumstance, the sensors on my car have worked correctly and disengaged the cruise control and I have never had a problem with breaking. I suspect a blind spot in the sensor system but why, only in this situation, does the brake system fail to disengage the cruise control when i press on the brake is a very troublesome mystery to me. Answering question on web page: My safety - life threatening, No dealer consultation, Regular maintenance schedule maintained, No warnings.

Negative 2019 Toyota Avalon car reviews

  1. Alek Schumm 2024-11-11

The car does not meet my expectations for the price paid. The lack of memory seat and inferior ride quality compared to my 2016 hybrid are disappointing. However, I do appreciate the interesting radar feature.

  2. John McDermott 2024-11-11

To get to the main event, you'll need to pass the front first. I'm curious, what's happening at Toyota? In my opinion, cars should have a streamlined, slick, and smooth appearance.

  3. Quinten Swift 2024-09-04

I have been a loyal Toyota customer, but unfortunately, my experience with the 2019 Valon has been disappointing. I have faced several issues with this car, including a cheap plastic noise coming from the dashboard. Despite taking it to the dealership multiple times, the issue has not been resolved. Additionally, I have had trouble closing the trunk at times, and the Birdseye view camera system has failed on one side of the car, appearing black on the screen. The auto brake system has also failed when backing up slowly, which is concerning. I am feeling frustrated and unsure of what to do next, especially since I opted for the touring trim, which is the higher-end model and cost me a significant amount of money. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to proceed. Thank you for your help.

I recently purchased a 2019 Avalon as a replacement for my older model. While the new design is much more appealing and sporty, I have noticed a decrease in quality. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues such as interior rattling and misaligned moon roof covers. Additionally, there are some spots where light is still coming through. Even the carpet in the passenger side has peeled off, despite the car not being heavily used. As a long-time Toyota owner, I am disappointed with the overall quality of this car and it has shaken my faith in the brand. I hope Toyota can address these issues in the future.

Your car is 4 years old with 18,000 miles and unfortunately, the a/c compressor needs to be replaced. The repair cost is $2,000 which is quite expensive if you go to the Toyota dealer. However, overall it seems like a nice car.

Positive 2019 Toyota Avalon car reviews

That's a great car! Have you considered the Lexus ES 300h Ultra Luxury? It's loaded with features. Although the Limited with the advanced safety package has almost all the same features as the Lexus, it's approximately $10K cheaper. Our local Toyota dealer was more willing to discount the MSRP than Lexus, so that sealed the deal for me. But still, a Lexus is a Lexus, and an Avalon is still a Toyota! I've driven both cars several times before buying, and to be honest, no one would notice a difference driving day to day, except for the L on the grill when you walk up to it! By the way, I think the touchscreen infotainment system is much more user-friendly than the touchpad on the Lexus, which is definitely something to consider.

I recently upgraded from a 2008 Avalon Limited to the 2019 model. I loved my 2008 car so much that I decided to get another one. While the 2019 version is very nice, I personally feel that it's not quite as plush as the 2008 model. Some features that I miss from the 2008 model include automatic windshield wipers, a rear window popup sun screen, turn signal lights on the outside mirrors, a trunk open button on the outside, tire lugnut locks, a sunglasses storage box overhead, and mudguards. However, the 2019 model has some great new features like a blind spot indicator on the outside mirror, a rear view camera, rear seat warmers, and a heated steering wheel. I do miss the larger and more accessible storage compartment in the center armrest of the 2008 model, which also had coin storage slots. I did purchase the birdseye view camera safety system, which is very nice but I feel is underutilized. While the camera angles are great, as I get older, I appreciate the ability to see vehicles in my blind spot more. It would be nice if the camera came on to the left or right when I turn on the turn signal.I've noticed other vehicles doing this, and I think it would be great if the car came with a remote car starter as standard equipment. In my opinion, a vehicle called a 'Limited' should have all features included as standard. That being said, I'm really enjoying the car's smooth ride and modern technology features. My 2008 car was expensive to repair, but it held up well over the 12 years I owned it - I never even had to purchase a muffler for it. I'm hoping for the same level of workmanship in my 2019 model.

  3. D'angelo Waters 2024-11-28

I have the Touring model. The safety features on this car are top-notch! Sport and Sport+ mode definitely live up to the hype. While the interior trims could be fancier, the ride is very smooth on most roads. Unfortunately, the navigation system has major glitches and is outdated in style.

  4. Kody Effertz 2024-11-22

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited! It sounds like you've had a lot of experience with different cars over the years, so it means a lot that you consider this one the best. The quiet and smooth ride, powerful engine, and great handling all sound like fantastic features. And the fact that you're getting such great mileage is definitely impressive for a car of this size. It's great to hear that you're also happy with the seating, ride, electronics, and safety features. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Chase Kuhic 2024-11-03

This is such an amazing car! It has power, great looks, and plenty of room for backseat passengers as well as a huge trunk compartment. It's full of extras that make any trip, whether short or long, so much fun. Just keep in mind that it's a big car, so parking in small spaces or normal parking garages might be a bit of a challenge. Overall, the Avalon is just awesome!!
