Nissan Titan problems
The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck manufactured in the United States for the North American market by Nissan. It was named after the Titans of Greek mythology.
First generation (A60; 2003)
Development of the Titan began in September 1999, with design work under Diane Allen. Giovanny Arroba's TA60 exterior was chosen in late 2000, with a final production freeze in July 2001. The design language of the future truck was previewed by the 2001 Alpha T concept shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show, which had previously developed through November 2000.
Production began on September 21, 2003, and sales on December 1, 2003. The Titan used Nissan's new full-size F-Alpha platform. This new platform was shared with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, with all three manufactured in Canton, Mississippi, United States. The first generation Titan continued without a major redesign through 2015.

Common Nissan Titan problems
The Nissan Titan, a full-size pickup truck, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are the five most common problems:
- Fuel pump failure: The Nissan Titan is known to have problems with its fuel pump due to clogged fuel filters. This issue can cause trouble starting the car and starve the engine of gasoline. In some cases, it can also damage the catalytic converter, leading to the engine shutting down. This problem is particularly common in the 2018 Titan model.
- Transmission problems: Transmission issues are common in the Nissan Titan, with the 2016 model being especially notorious. Drivers have reported hard shifting, abrupt stopping during drives, and no recalls made to correct the issue. The 2004 to 2006 models also have rear axle seal leakage due to lack of ventilation or overheating, which can damage the axle bearings, differential assembly, and transmission system if left unchecked.
- Rear-axle seal leakage: The seals on the Titan's rear axles leak easily, with the 2004 to 2006 models being particularly problematic. This issue is caused by a lack of ventilation or overheating and can lead to low transmission fluid, which can damage the axle bearings, differential assembly, and transmission system. It is best to replace the entire differential assembly to fix the issue rather than replace only the problematic rear differential or component.
- Faulty interior accessories: The Titan has had many complaints from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about its interior accessories. The driver and passenger seats are known to shake or separate from the seat frame after only two years of usage. The dash lights can turn dim in daylight, making it hard to tell which warning is up. Some drivers have also reported a disappearing starter button, smoke wafting out of the engine compartment, loud sounds from the engine, and busted nail indicators that cause rod knock and other sounds coming from the engine. The 2008 model is particularly notorious for such engine problems.
- Drivetrain problems: The worst problem category for the Nissan Titan is drivetrain problems. The 2018 model year is rated as the worst due to possible factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage. The most-reported problem is with the 2005 Nissan Titan for rear axle failure, with an average cost to fix of $7,000 and an average mileage of 0 mi.
In summary, the Nissan Titan has had several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include fuel pump failure, transmission problems, rear-axle seal leakage, faulty interior accessories, and drivetrain problems. While the Titan has many redeemable features, potential buyers should be aware of these issues, particularly in certain model years.
What years did the Titans avoid?
Quick Answer: Avoid 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2016, and 2018 Nissan Titans. Nissan's first foray into full-size pickup trucks didn't go off without a hitch; in fact, it took them a few years to get things rolling.
Is the Nissan Titan a reliable truck?
When it comes to reliability, the Nissan Titan is leading the way compared to the Ram 1500. In fact, in 2022, J.D. Power awarded the 2022 Nissan Titan a "Great" Quality and a Reliability score of 85 out of 100.
Do Nissan Titans have transmission problems?
As surprising as it may sound, a design flaw in the radiator is actually the root cause of many Nissan Titan transmission failures. You see, the Nissan RE5R05A transmission pumps ATF forward to the radiator, where a special chamber allows it to release the heat that it's absorbed from all of the moving parts.
How many miles will a Nissan Titan last?
How long do Nissan Titans last? Typically, a Nissan Titan can last around 200,000 miles - though some can make it as far as 400,000 miles. Many things can go wrong with the Titan, but it will serve you well if you provide the effort it needs to sustain itself.

A year later in 2023 it went out again and ruined both the low and high turbos, had to get them replaced again this time under warranty but Nissan of Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan had my truck for 87 days before I got it back. They tried to tell me I needed a whole new engine block. I’m scared because if this happens again who is going to be held liable for it, me? Not to mention the damage it’s most likely caused on the engine block and crankshaft. The last thing I want is for that to break as I’m going down the highway.

After having diagnosed by a reputable diesel mechanic near me, it was determined that the CP4 fuel pump, known to be faulty in these and other trucks as well had failed. After extensive examination, it resulting in a catastrophic failure of the fuel system, ultimately requiring a $14, 000+ repair. (Unrealistic cost due to the current value of the truck being around $10k - $14k. Metal chards had been distributed all throughout the entire fuel system. This failure is unfortunately very common and Nissan or Cummins should be held accountable for this issue.

- Summary: In November of 2022 we heard a knocking noise from the engine and then the low oil warning came on. Vehicle would then not start. When we towed it to the dealership they found noise from the bottom end and low oil pressure code P0524 and verified engine will not start and does make a bad knocking noise during short crank period. Determined the engine came apart internally and had large rod and main bearing material in oil pan loose metal ran through engine and engine will need to be replaced. We had all necessary warranty work done at the certified dealership and all oil changes were done as recommended, all documentation sent to dealership. Nissan would not cover the damage, we were 12,370 miles over warranty and still owed $24,000 on the vehicle. On April 4/17/2023 we paid $17,977 for a new engine on the truck. Upon our research this is a "known" issue with this engine and the crank shaft failing.

I took this truck out on the road and it was really impressive! There was so much room and it had great acceleration. Even when I pulled a popup trailer, the truck handled it with ease. I'm also happy to report that I get the same gas mileage as I did with my Chevy, but with a much better truck.

Pros: Interior space, reliability, and V8 rumble. Cons: Gas mileage is scary, A/C is weak, and acceleration without a tune is sub-par.

I own the 2017 Nissan Titan PRO4X and have previously owned the 2009 and 2014 models. While the interior is the same as before, the sound quality is acceptable with the package. However, I am considering purchasing a Ford F150 next due to its superior mileage and interior. When towing my ATV and trailer, I only get 9-10mpg. The reason I chose the Titan was for its dependability and lack of breakdowns. The truck has some great features, such as positive traction, a powerful engine, fast speed, tie-downs, a spray-in liner, and metal guards under the truck. However, the major downside is the interior. Nissan makes cars with nice interiors, so why not put them in their trucks? The gas mileage and gear ratio are also not up to par. A friend of mine has the F150 Ford Sierra package, and it drives like a dream with a nice interior and a strong engine. In conclusion, while I can live with the gas mileage, the interior will cause me to shop elsewhere. I hope that Nissan executives read this and consider making some changes. As a loyal customer, I would hate to switch brands.

I spent almost a year researching half-ton trucks before finally deciding on a 2019 Titan Platinum Reserve. I'm surprised that more people aren't buying this truck! It has the best warranty, great looks (although that's subjective), a strong and reliable V8, and the best deal available. When I bought my 2019 Titan PR, they took 15K off the sticker before any real negotiation began. The only two things I would suggest for improvement are: the remote is too small! It feels like it belongs with a Tonka truck, and the ambient lighting is almost non-existent. Other than that, I'm extremely happy.

You'll be happy to know that this vehicle has plenty of power and comes with a 5-year/100k miles warranty. While there have been some reported issues with reliability and reprogramming, our team is dedicated to finding solutions to these problems. It's worth noting that the resale value may not be as high as some other vehicles, but we believe that the overall quality and performance make up for it. Additionally, we are aware of some shaking and vibration at highway speeds, and we are actively working on a solution to address this issue. Thank you for considering this vehicle!

I purchased my Nissan PRO4X super duper four wheel drive in December 2010 to use on my farm. Unfortunately, after 8 months and 22,000 miles, I experienced some issues with the front end suspension, interior, and radiator mounts. Despite these challenges, I am hopeful that the dealership will be able to assist me with these concerns. I have heard mixed reviews from other owners in my small town, but I am confident that Nissan will stand behind their product and provide the necessary support. While the trade-in value has decreased, I am still considering my options and hope to find a solution that works for me. Thank you for your understanding.

Although I found the design of the vehicle to be well thought out, I experienced some issues with the build quality of my truck. Despite having a few fancy features such as navigation, DVD, and a sunroof, it had to be taken to the dealership six times and was out of service for almost 60 days due to minor issues such as the stereo, tire pressure monitoring system, and auto up/down window controls. While the base models are priced competitively, Nissan still has room for improvement in their truck manufacturing. Perhaps in a few years, they will have caught up to the likes of Toyota and Ford.

The truck initially seemed amazing and I was impressed with Nissan's reputation. However, after only a year of ownership, I noticed significant rust starting to form despite taking great care of it. I had even paid extra for rust protection from Nissan, but it seems that it was not applied properly. Additionally, I experienced issues with the heated seats not warming up sufficiently and the screen occasionally failing to turn on when starting the truck. Although it was a great truck, I encountered too many problems during my three years of ownership. Water also leaked in from the windows during rain or snow, which was concerning. Ultimately, I decided to part ways with it.

Second Update: My truck now has 82,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with carbon buildup on the intake valves, causing significant loss of power, despite having installed a catch can back at 40,000 miles. If you are considering purchasing a Titan with the direct injection engine, I would advise against it. Instead, I would recommend buying an F150 with its tried and true 5.0 V8, which is not direct injection. I will be selling this truck ASAP as soon as I can get some more money saved up to cover the higher cost of a better truck. And this is coming from the point of view of someone who is an experienced mechanic! Update: My Titan now has 69,000 miles on it, and to be honest, I wish I had never bought it. I have been experiencing some issues with the paint chips on the hood and roof, which are now rusting. The engine is also not performing as well as I had hoped. I have had to remove the intake manifold and clean the intake valves four times now because of heavy buildup of carbon deposits due to the direct injection design of the engine in this truck. Thank goodness I'm an aviation mechanic and can do this myself, but I pity anyone who does not have the ability to do this themselves. Unfortunately, there is no fix to this problem. The brakes have also warped badly and make the truck shudder every time I stop. The dash continues to have a bad rattle due to the flimsy way it is secured. I can confidently say that I will not be owning another Nissan vehicle ever again. I had friends who were previous Nissan owners who tried to talk me out of buying a Nissan, and I regret not listening to them. If you are considering buying a vehicle with a direct injection only engine, I would advise against it. Both Ford and Toyota learned the hard way and have changed their fuel injection system to a dual injection system - part of the time it is port injection to keep the valves clean, and the other part of the time it is direct injection for better fuel economy. If vehicle prices weren't so high right now, I would have gotten rid of this truck months ago. I bought my Titan with 9,000 miles on it and was blown away by the acceleration. Coming from a 2015 F250 with the 6.2 gas engine, my Titan felt like a rocket ship. However, with 44,000 miles on it now, there are a few things I dislike. The paint is not very durable and scratches easily. Even leaning against the side of the bed with a cotton shirt on caused numerous scratches. My Ford never scratched like this. Additionally, there are a lot of rock dings on the hood from highway driving. My Ford had significantly less chips in the paint on the hood when I sold it with 120,000 miles on it. I'm not happy with the cheap paint of the Titan. Another issue is the loss of acceleration power. The truck is not as fast as it was when I bought it. I suspect this is due to the direct injection fuel system and carbon buildup on the intake valves. I will be investigating this soon and blasting the valves with a pecan shell blaster if necessary. On the plus side, the highway gas mileage for a V8 has been very good. However, my average has dropped from 19-20 to 17-18. I suspect this is also due to the carbon buildup on the intake valves. Lastly, the dash has a rattle where it meets the windshield, but I plan to fix it with some foam. Overall, the Titan has its flaws, but it's still a good truck for highway commuting. The leather seats have held up well and the A/C still works great in the summer. Although the OEM General Grabber HTS tires are done at 44,000 miles and hydroplane badly in wet weather, I have driven my truck several times down a dirt road for hunting and the ride is very smooth compared to my F250. The transmission, when new, felt very erratic but has calmed down now and shifts very smoothly. I've made several 6-hour drives deer hunting with it, with a 650 lb four-wheeler in the bed, and it handles the drive very well. The added weight is only slightly noticeable. Overall, it's been a good truck, despite the paint and loss of power. While I can't say I love it like my Ford, I do wish I had held onto my F250, as that was a real truck in my opinion.
