2016 Nissan Titan problems

The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck manufactured in the United States for the North American market by Nissan. It was named after the Titans of Greek mythology.

First generation (A60; 2003)

Development of the Titan began in September 1999, with design work under Diane Allen. Giovanny Arroba's TA60 exterior was chosen in late 2000, with a final production freeze in July 2001. The design language of the future truck was previewed by the 2001 Alpha T concept shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show, which had previously developed through November 2000.

Production began on September 21, 2003, and sales on December 1, 2003. The Titan used Nissan's new full-size F-Alpha platform. This new platform was shared with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, with all three manufactured in Canton, Mississippi, United States. The first generation Titan continued without a major redesign through 2015.

Common 2016 Nissan Titan problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD, several common problems have been reported:

  • Turbocharger Problems: The Cummins diesel engine in the 2016 Titan XD has been associated with turbocharger issues. Low oil pressure can cause oil starvation within the turbocharger, leading to turbine wheel contact with the housing and potential engine damage. This issue has resulted in recalls for some vehicles and expensive repairs for others .
  • Crankshaft Issues: The 2016 model has been flagged for potential crankshaft problems that could result in costly engine repairs, especially in trucks with lower mileage. This risk is heightened in vehicles used for short daily commutes, as diesel engines like the one in the Titan XD require longer trips to manage emissions system maintenance effectively.
  • Electrical Glitches: The 2016 Titan XD faced initial quality issues, including electrical glitches reported by early adopters. These glitches ranged from minor to significant concerns, impacting areas like the remote start feature, power seat adjustments, persistent open door chime, and issues with the body control module. These electrical problems have persisted in later model years as well, affecting the overall reliability of the vehicle.
  • DEF System Errors: For owners considering the Cummins engine in the 2018 Titan XD, issues with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system have been a significant concern. Problems with the DEF pump and sensor have led to warnings like "DEF System Error," requiring costly replacements of the tank and sensor. These unexpected issues can disrupt vehicle usage and result in substantial expenses, especially when out of emissions warranty.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD highlight various issues ranging from engine malfunctions to electrical glitches, impacting the reliability and performance of the vehicle. Addressing these concerns promptly and proactively can help mitigate potential long-term damage and costly repairs.

2018-04-16
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Nissan Titan, 2016 and 2018 Nissan Titan XD vehicles. Accessories installed on these vehicles reduced the load carrying capacity, however, a Load Carrying Capacity modification label was not installed, possibly allowing the vehicle to be overloaded. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
  • Consequence: An overloaded vehicle can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners and provide a new modification label, with installation instructions, free of charge. The recall began on June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
2017-04-24
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Nissan Titan Crew Cab and Titan XD Crew Cab vehicles. In the event of a crash, the rear seatbelt assembly may not adequately protect the occupant's head, allowing it to contact the D-ring bolt trim cap. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
  • Consequence: If the occupant's head contacts the D-ring bolt trim cap during a crash, there is an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install energy absorbing material to the C-Pillar Finishers and replace the Seatbelt Bolt and Bolt Cap, free of charge. The recall began September 19, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
2016-11-22
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016 Titan Diesel XD vehicles manufactured August 7, 2015, to September 1, 2016. The affected vehicles may not have had the temporary fuel tank breather tube cap removed during the vehicle's assembly and the fuel tank breather tube may not have been connected to the bed rail. As a result, the fuel tank may not have the proper ventilation, possibly causing the fuel gauge and the distance to empty meter to both display inaccurately.
  • Consequence: If the fuel gauge reads incorrectly, the vehicle can run out of fuel without the driver being aware, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel tank breather tube, replacing the fuel tank, fuel sending unit, and/or fuel tank breather tube, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 12, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
