2013 Nissan Titan problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck manufactured in the United States for the North American market by Nissan. It was named after the Titans of Greek mythology.

First generation (A60; 2003)

Development of the Titan began in September 1999, with design work under Diane Allen. Giovanny Arroba's TA60 exterior was chosen in late 2000, with a final production freeze in July 2001. The design language of the future truck was previewed by the 2001 Alpha T concept shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show, which had previously developed through November 2000.

Production began on September 21, 2003, and sales on December 1, 2003. The Titan used Nissan's new full-size F-Alpha platform. This new platform was shared with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, with all three manufactured in Canton, Mississippi, United States. The first generation Titan continued without a major redesign through 2015.

Common 2013 Nissan Titan problems

The Nissan Titan, a full-size pickup truck produced by Nissan, has been known to have several common problems across various model years. Here are the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints:

  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are common in the Nissan Titan, with the 2016 model being particularly affected. Drivers have reported hard shifting, and in some cases, the transmission has stopped abruptly during a drive. This problem has been reported to affect a large number of 2016 Titan models, with no recall made to correct the issue.
  • Rear-Axle Seal Leakage: The rear axle seal is responsible for keeping the transmission fluid from leaking. However, in the Nissan Titan, these seals can leak easily, especially in the 2004 to 2006 models. The leakage is reported to be due to a lack of ventilation or overheating. If left unchecked, excess transmission fluid leakage can cause damage to the axle bearings, differential assembly, and transmission system.
  • Faulty Interior Accessories: There have been many complaints about the seats of the Titan, with the driver and passenger seats known to shake or separate from the seat frame after only two years of usage. Other interior issues include dim dash lights, disappearing starter buttons, and smoke wafting out of the engine compartment caused by an exploded plenum. The 2008 model is particularly notorious for such engine problems.
  • Engine Problems: Engine issues are a common complaint among Nissan Titan owners. These problems can include loud sounds causing the truck to shake immediately after turning on the key in the keyhole, busted nail indicators causing rod knock and other sounds coming from the engine, and overheating due to lack of ventilation. The 2004 to 2006 and 2008 models are particularly affected by these engine problems.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Titan has many redeeming features, it is important for potential buyers to be aware of these common problems, especially if considering a 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, or 2017 model year. Regular maintenance and careful monitoring of these potential issues can help ensure a more reliable and enjoyable ownership experience.

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-08-04
  • VIN: 1N6AA0EC7DN
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP TO TENNESSEE, 1.5 HOURS AWAY FROM OUR DESTINATION WE STOPPED AT A GAS STATION. WE TOOK THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION OF THE TRUCK AND THE TRUCK KEPT RUNNING. ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ALSO CAME ON AT ONCE. WE COULD NOT TURN THE CAR OFF BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY BECAUSE THE ALTERNATOR KEPT THE CAR RUNNING. A CHECK OF THE COMPUTER AT AN O'REILLY AUTO PARTS DID NOT SHOW ANY COMPUTER WARNING CODES. SINCE WE DID NOT WANT TO BE STRANDED 8 HOURS AWAY FROM HOME, WE DECIDED TO DRIVE BACK HOME. WHILE ON THE FREEWAY, THE TRUCK'S ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. WE HAD NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. WE WERE ABLE TO GET IT TO THE SHOULDER AND RESTART THE TRUCK. WHILE DRIVING IT OFF OF THE EXIT RAMP, THE TRUCK DIED AGAIN. WE TRIED GOING TO ANOTHER AUTO PARTS STORE BUT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO GET A CODE READING OFF OF THE CAR. A CALL TO A NISSAN DEALERSHIP TOLD US TO JUST PULL FUSES TO SHUT THE CAR OFF AND THAT THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO HELP US FOR 2 DAYS. WE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY WHEN THE TRUCK HAD DIED TO TRY TO RESET THE SYSTEM AND DROVE BACK ON THE HIGHWAY. THE TRUCK DIED AGAIN. A CALL TO THE NISSAN ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE HOTLINE TOLD US WE SHOULD JUST CALL 9-1-1. WE REALIZED THAT IF WE DIDN'T DRIVE THE CAR FASTER THAN 60 MPH WE IT WOULD NOT SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING SO WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE KILLED US HAD MY HUSBAND NOT BEEN AS SKILLED OF A DRIVER. ONLINE RESEARCH SHOWS THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THEIR NISSAN TITANS. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY SERIOUS ISSUE AND, WHEN CONTACTING NISSAN ABOUT IT, THEY DO NOT CARE. PLEASE HELP US. *TT *DT THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS FINALLY DIAGNOSED WITH A HOLE IN THE TOP OF THE TRUCKS MUFFLER, WHICH THE LEAK CAUSED AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHORT IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS. *TR

2013 Nissan Titan recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2013 Nissan Titan.

  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driver air bag inflators, free of charge. The recall began May 7, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or Infiniti customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013 Titan and Armada vehicles manufactured February 22, 2013, through May 3, 2013. The affected vehicles have a brake master cylinder which may intermittently reduce the pressure supplied to the front brakes.
  • Consequence: If the front brake pressure is reduced there would be less braking power, requiring a longer distance to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan has notified owners, and dealers will replace the master cylinder, free of charge. The recall began on October 21, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Chemicals used in the manufacturing of the shift lever assembly may result in the malfunction of the brake shift interlock allowing the transmission shift lever to be shifted out of Park without depressing the brake pedal.
  • Consequence: If the vehicle is unintentionally shifted out of park, it could roll away and lead to personal injury or a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will remedy the vehicles, free of charge. The recall began on April 15, 2013. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.

Negative 2013 Nissan Titan car reviews

  1. Jamel Leuschke 2024-11-15

I purchased my Nissan PRO4X super duper four wheel drive in December 2010 to use on my farm. Unfortunately, after 8 months and 22,000 miles, I experienced some issues with the front end suspension, interior, and radiator mounts. Despite these challenges, I am hopeful that the dealership will be able to assist me with these concerns. I have heard mixed reviews from other owners in my small town, but I am confident that Nissan will stand behind their product and provide the necessary support. While the trade-in value has decreased, I am still considering my options and hope to find a solution that works for me. Thank you for your understanding.

  2. Diego Goodwin 2024-10-04

I really like the 5.6 liter engine! Although it may lack modern technology, it was exactly what I needed when I bought it.

  3. Kane Lind 2024-09-09

I recently purchased a 2012 Nissan Titan Pro-4x and while I have had some mixed experiences with it, overall it has been a decent vehicle. The interior is acceptable, although there is a fair amount of hard plastic used. Unfortunately, the infotainment system has been a bit of a disappointment, as it doesn't seem to allow for music playback through Bluetooth. Additionally, the fuel mileage leaves something to be desired, especially on the highway. However, the engine does provide decent acceleration. While the towing capability is not as strong as I would like, it does the job for my occasional 6k travel trailer. Unfortunately, I have had to take the truck into the shop a few times for repairs, including a recent $1300 expense for a serpentine belt, hydraulic tensioner, belt pulleys, alternator, and power steering pump. Despite these issues, I still believe the truck is a decent option for those who don't need to tow frequently or drive long distances on the highway. However, if I were to purchase another vehicle, I would consider a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel for more power and better fuel economy.

  4. Oral Ankunding 2024-08-07

After many trips to the dealer for a/c defrost repairs, the issue still persists. Additionally, the sun roof works intermittently. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this truck due to the numerous problems. There are too many issues to list.

  5. Barney Kris 2024-06-12

The interior and paint could use some improvement.

Positive 2013 Nissan Titan car reviews

  1. Woodrow Mann 2024-10-02

Great truck! I'm glad to hear that you're satisfied with it.

  2. Johnnie Koelpin 2024-09-26

Great truck! It's so much fun to drive. I've owned three so far and I've loved them all.

  3. Roscoe Hermann 2024-09-02

Great truck! It's very low maintenance, but when it needs repairs, it can be expensive. However, it has a lot of power and can really get the job done. Just keep in mind that it does consume quite a bit of gas.

  4. Samir Runte 2024-07-19

It's great to hear that it lived up to your expectations!

  5. Rodrick Dach 2024-06-12

The truck has been fantastic for me in every way!
