2017 Nissan Titan problems
The Nissan Titan is a full-size pickup truck manufactured in the United States for the North American market by Nissan. It was named after the Titans of Greek mythology.
First generation (A60; 2003)
Development of the Titan began in September 1999, with design work under Diane Allen. Giovanny Arroba's TA60 exterior was chosen in late 2000, with a final production freeze in July 2001. The design language of the future truck was previewed by the 2001 Alpha T concept shown at the 2001 North American International Auto Show, which had previously developed through November 2000.
Production began on September 21, 2003, and sales on December 1, 2003. The Titan used Nissan's new full-size F-Alpha platform. This new platform was shared with the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 SUVs, with all three manufactured in Canton, Mississippi, United States. The first generation Titan continued without a major redesign through 2015.

Common 2017 Nissan Titan problems
The 2017 Nissan Titan has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most prominent issues is the leaking rear axle seal, which has been a common problem for the Titan model, particularly between 2004 and 2006.
Another issue that has been reported by 2017 Nissan Titan owners is transmission problems. Some owners have observed hard shifting and jerking while shifting, and some have reported that their trucks would stop abruptly while driving.
The 2017 Titan's fuel system has also been a source of complaints, with some owners noticing whistling/humming sounds while fueling up their trucks. Some have also reported fuel pump failure, which can damage the catalytic converter.
In addition to these issues, the 2017 Nissan Titan's built-in navigation unit has been reported to frequently display "disc error" on the screen, causing visibility issues for the driver. Some owners have also reported problems with the truck's start button disappearing and issues with both driver and passenger seat shaking or detaching from the frame.
Drivers of the 2017 Nissan Titan have also experienced premature shock failure, particularly in vehicles with under 100,000 miles. Replacement of faulty shocks is generally the resolution for this issue. Additionally, uneven tire wear has been a problem, sometimes caused by misaligned racks or faulty camber bolts.
Engine troubles have been a significant concern for the 2008 Nissan Titan, with some owners reporting a loud noise from the engine upon starting the vehicle, accompanied by vibrations and smoke emanating from the engine compartment due to an exploded plenum. Others have encountered issues with the oil indicator, where the oil turns into a peanut butter-colored sludge without triggering the warning light, indicating severe oil contamination.
Despite these issues, the 2017 Nissan Titan has been praised by some owners for its smooth, comfortable, and quiet ride, particularly when towing heavy loads. However, it is clear that the 2017 model year has had its fair share of problems, and potential buyers should be aware of these issues before making a purchase.
What are common problems with a 2017 Nissan Titan?
Common problems found on the 2017 Nissan Titan include reduced power from the engine, slow gear changes, along with some reports of climate control system issues. Overall, these problems are worse than some other full-size trucks on the market, leading to slightly higher ownership costs.
Is the 2017 Nissan Titan reliable?
How Reliable Is the 2017 Nissan Titan? The 2017 Titan has a predicted reliability rating of three out of five from J.D. Power, which is average for the industry.
Do Nissan Titans have transmission problems?
These are two common Nissan Titan transmission problems, and they're caused by two separate issues. 1: Slipping on the 4-5 shift is typically caused by a failed solenoid, worn transmission bands, or using the wrong type of ATF. 2: Harsh 2-3 shifts are usually the result of a worn clutch pack.

- Summary: My turbo actuator went out in 2022, paid $2,000 to get it fixed. A year later in 2023 it went out again and ruined both the low and high turbos, had to get them replaced again this time under warranty but Nissan of Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan had my truck for 87 days before I got it back. They tried to tell me I needed a whole new engine block. I’m scared because if this happens again who is going to be held liable for it, me? Not to mention the damage it’s most likely caused on the engine block and crankshaft. The last thing I want is for that to break as I’m going down the highway.

- Summary: I have owned this vehicle since day one... this was meticulously maintained and serviced regularly. While sitting at an idle, with no prior warning, the vehicle just stopped running. After having diagnosed by a reputable diesel mechanic near me, it was determined that the CP4 fuel pump, known to be faulty in these and other trucks as well had failed. After extensive examination, it resulting in a catastrophic failure of the fuel system, ultimately requiring a $14, 000+ repair. (Unrealistic cost due to the current value of the truck being around $10k - $14k. Metal chards had been distributed all throughout the entire fuel system. This failure is unfortunately very common and Nissan or Cummins should be held accountable for this issue.

STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-13
- VIN: 1N6BA1F32HN
- Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle is available for inspection immediately by all parties. While driving down the highway, the truck started a vibration, without any warning indicators. The vehicle was taken to the next travel center truck shop. The writer acknowledged the vibration like a misfire, but no codes were present. He recommended another shop or dealer. A detour was made to the nearest Nissan dealership. On the way, the truck stumbled with a violent vibration and shut down on the road without warning lights. There was a complete loss of power from the engine on the highway, giving way to the risk of being hit by other motorists and blocking traffic. Since the engine shut down, there was also a loss of power steering, giving high risk to the possibility of an accident. The truck was unable to restart. The vehicle shut down in the middle of the desert, exposing my family to unsafe environmental conditions. The truck was towed the remaining way to the dealer. The next business day, the technician got the truck started and verified the concern. The tech requested additional time for teardown which was approved to remove the oil pan for inspection. I was quoted over $37,000 to repair “catastrophic engine failure.” There were metal shavings found in the oil pan “the size of a computer mouse” from somewhere on the crankshaft. The dealer found that the check engine light came on during service but did not provide the codes. Nissan refuses to assist with repair due to warranty time and secondhand ownership. Nissan was offered to inspect the vehicle but has declined.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
- VIN: 1N6AA1EKXHN
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The alternator wiring harness per recall bulletin NTB19-053 has has failed multiple times impacting starting and leaving driver stranded, shuttering while being driven, locking mechanism and other electrical components working intermittingly. Vehicle was purchased used from a dealership with 17,000 miles and shortly afterwards 1st episode of not starting occurred but then worked for about 8 months, assumed it was bad gas. In 2019 Nissan advised they inspected the harness but never informed about inspection nor recall. Over the past few years the problem one come and go and once twice I replaced the battery. Took the vehicle in to Nissan May of 2024 and they advised an alternator was needed but they did not have the part and could not get the part in a reasonable time frame. I offered to accept and aftermarket part and they did not agree to do so. A local repair center provided aftermarket part with 2 year warrant and also discovered the harness recall and advised this appeared to be the problem and would cost an addition $700 to replace. I returned to Nissan regarding this findings and was told all they had to was inspect it and they did so. Nissan Compliance was contacted and after their review they refused to pay for harness removal, even after getting photos showing issues with the alternator harness. Once, the new alternator was installed the same problems returned as originally diagnosed by Nissan i.e. a failing alternator (less that 12 volts). I am seeking to have the original campaign to replace the harness, as a visual inspection of wiring may not lead to observation and what they assume was safe may not in fact been safe at all. In addition the harness replacement, I am requesting a refund as related to the alternator as the one removed was fine and its the wiring harness failing that is creating the problem, based on the symptoms described in the bulletin and those documented by both repair shops. Lastly, it appears vehicle was a buy back Nissan.

The contact's son was informed that the screws had sheared off. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-11
- VIN: 1N6BA1F25HN
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I took my Titan into the dealership due to a knocking sound in the motor. The same day Nissan service called me and said the motor has to be replaced, that the know is coming from the Crankshaft. I have 112,000 miles on my truck and have completed every service required without question at the dealership purchased from. There is no way a diesel motor crank should brake at 112,000 miles. I have contacted Nissan customer Affairs and am awaiting a reply, however after reading several forums concerning the same failure problem, I decided to voice my complaint at a higher level. I have also have had the power steering system replaced twice under warranty due to power steering Failure. Nissan has stated the repair cost under warranty would be approximately $33,000. I might as well as purchase two of these at the price it will cost me to fix.

I own the 2017 Nissan Titan PRO4X and have previously owned the 2009 and 2014 models. While the interior is the same as before, the sound quality is acceptable with the package. However, I am considering purchasing a Ford F150 next due to its superior mileage and interior. When towing my ATV and trailer, I only get 9-10mpg. The reason I chose the Titan was for its dependability and lack of breakdowns. The truck has some great features, such as positive traction, a powerful engine, fast speed, tie-downs, a spray-in liner, and metal guards under the truck. However, the major downside is the interior. Nissan makes cars with nice interiors, so why not put them in their trucks? The gas mileage and gear ratio are also not up to par. A friend of mine has the F150 Ford Sierra package, and it drives like a dream with a nice interior and a strong engine. In conclusion, while I can live with the gas mileage, the interior will cause me to shop elsewhere. I hope that Nissan executives read this and consider making some changes. As a loyal customer, I would hate to switch brands.

Still great value though shifting is not optimal. Radio did break, but it was covered under warranty. It feels and sounds better than the (my) Titan XD, which is naturally tuned for heavier duty more local duty. It's like a relative sportscar to the XD.

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2017 Titan Pro X! It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with it so far. You've mentioned that you've towed a 7,000 lb travel trailer without any issues, which is impressive. The V8 engine sounds fantastic, although it would be even better if it had better mileage. It's worth noting that the Titan Pro X was named Truck Trends Truck of the Year in 2017, which is a testament to its quality. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this truck and we hope you continue to enjoy it!

The shift algorithm used while towing without cruise control is not optimal, as it downshifts 3-4 gears. However, the vehicle shifts fine without cruise control. The dealer and Nissan customer care were unable to provide assistance. It is clear that the shift algorithm needs improvement.

I used to drive a Nissan Frontier 2014, but I decided to upgrade to a bigger truck due to my job requiring frequent travel to different states and cities across the USA. Although the truck is beautiful and runs well, I have noticed some issues when switching from 'P' to 'D' and turning left or right. It doesn't feel quite right and makes some noises. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend this truck. Personally, I regret not choosing a different truck like a GMC.
Marshall Smitham 2024-04-18
The paint quality is not up to par, as it chips and scratches off easily. I am currently in the process of getting the whole truck repainted, so I am hopeful that this will resolve the issue. I have noticed that the DEF gauge shows full until the last second, which can be frustrating when you need it within 30 miles. Additionally, the Miles Till Empty feature seems to work inconsistently.
