Chevrolet Equinox problems

The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common Chevrolet Equinox problems
Based on complaints from owners of Chevrolet Equinox cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Owners of various Equinox models, particularly from 2010 to 2013, have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. This problem can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage. The 2.4L Ecotec engine in these models has been highlighted for burning too much oil, which can result in engine knocking, defective spark plugs, and timing chain issues that may lead to complete engine failure.
- Delayed Acceleration Problems: Many Chevrolet Equinox generations suffer from delayed acceleration due to a slow response in the drive-by-wire electronic throttle system. This throttle lag can be frustrating for drivers and may even pose safety risks by causing dangerous situations on the road.
- Passlock Security: The Passlock security system, designed to prevent theft, has caused issues for Equinox owners. This system can sometimes malfunction, leading to difficulties for the actual owners in starting and driving their vehicles.
- Takata Recalls: A significant number of Chevy vehicles, including some Equinox models, have been recalled due to dangerous airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. These faulty inflators have been linked to serious safety concerns, prompting recalls in millions of vehicles to address the issue.
- Heater Blows Cold Air: A common complaint among Equinox owners, particularly in the 2006 model, is an unreliable climate control unit that results in the heater blowing cold air. This issue can impact the comfort and usability of the vehicle, especially in colder climates.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that Chevrolet Equinox owners have faced, ranging from engine-related concerns like oil consumption to safety and comfort issues such as delayed acceleration and HVAC problems. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to ensuring the longevity and reliability of Chevrolet Equinox vehicles.
What is the main problem with Chevy Equinox?
Most frequently, the complaint is for excessive oil consumption. Some owners report their Equinox consuming more than a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. By the time it's due for an oil change, the crankcase could be virtually empty.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox a reliable car?
The Chevrolet Equinox is renowned for its durability, with select models reaching over 320,000 km (200,000 miles). High safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS confirm the Equinox as a secure family vehicle. The Equinox offers economical ownership with low maintenance and insurance costs.
What was a bad year for Equinox?
A: Potential buyers should be wary of the 2005, 2006, 2010-2013, and 2016 Chevy Equinox models. These years have been flagged for various issues, including engine problems, heating system malfunctions, and excessive oil consumption.
What are the cons of a Chevy Equinox?
Cons
- Smaller cargo area compared to most competitors.
- Wallet-friendly base trim is special-order only.
- Despite turbocharging, the engine doesn't feel very lively.
- Interior materials quality is disappointing considering the price.

It's a comfortably reliable SUV. Unfortunately, the steering can go out and Chevy is aware of this issue, but they have not issued a recall and their warranty does not cover it. Despite this, I still love my SUV. It's a shame that Chevy has not taken action to address this safety concern.

I compared this SUV to the Cadillac XT4 and GMC Terrain Denali. I have a 2017 Terrain Denali FWD, but I used to have a 2016 AWD and liked it. So, we got the 2019 Equinox Premier AWD. Even though it hardly snows here in the south, AWD is better, and the $1500 extra is worth it. In the Chevy, you can SWITCH it off to just FWD. The only negative comment I have is the tire noise. We have the 19-inch Japan brand tires, and they have road noise. My Terrain has 18-inch Michelin, and they are much better. We got this SUV for my wife to drive around town. Price-wise, this dealer has all GM makes, and the Chevy Equinox Premier is the best value. Comparing them, the Cady was $7,000 higher, and the GMC Terrain was about $1500, all had the exact same options when we priced them out, but the Chevy had $2000 more in rebates at that time. You get a lot more for your money if you get the Premier with the 2.0 Turbo AWD combination. I was afraid of a 4 cyl as I always had 6 or 8 cyl, but this 2.0L Turbo with 255 HP will really go, and I use regular gas even though they recommend premium just to get Govt Fuel rates. You will get slightly less MPG with the reg, but you save the 60 cent per gallon price difference. The MSRP price was $42,650, but after rebates at that time, we paid $37,600 plus T, T, & T.

I've had my 2013 Equinox for about a month now and I'm absolutely thrilled with it! The ride is so smooth and quiet, and the stereo system is fantastic. I especially love the sunroof - it's such a great feature. I'm actually taking it on a 300-mile road trip this weekend and I'm really looking forward to it. I'm confident that it will perform beautifully. The only thing I could possibly criticize is that the gas cap is on the passenger side, but that's a minor issue. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my new car. My husband and I are both retired now, so this will likely be our last new car purchase.

I purchased my Chevy Equinox 2010 brand new for an out the door price of $27,000 with a sun/moon window. After owning it for 7 years, I can honestly say that this SUV has been nothing but great for me with no issues. My mechanic advised me that as long as I do the required maintenance and always check for recalls so that Chevy can address them, there would be no issues. It has been impressive how this SUV performs. For a regular gas SUV, it is efficient gas-wise and drives perfectly. I highly recommend it!

I've been a loyal Chevrolet customer since 1972, but unfortunately, my recent experience with my vehicle has been less than satisfactory. Despite regular maintenance, I have had to deal with seven (7) warranty repairs in nearly 6 years, including issues with the wiper transmission, control arm bushings, transmission fluid leak, water pump, CAM actuator solenoid, seat switch, and control arm. To make matters worse, I have recently discovered that the engine is using/losing oil, which is a known issue that has resulted in a class action suit against GM. I would advise anyone considering purchasing a Chevrolet to do their research beforehand. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Vehicle year: 2020
Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2020 Equinox Premier. I noticed some issues with the blind spot indicator after replacing the regular OEM tires with snow tires in November. Despite multiple trips to the GM dealer and involving the GM 'Ambassador', the issue persisted. Unfortunately, GM head office refused to allow my dealer to continue with warranty repairs as there were no diagnostic codes. After researching the issue, I suspected it was the wheels or the snow tires causing the problem. Interestingly, the Bolt had similar issues and a warranty fix. The tires and wheels were recommended by the GM dealer. However, in March, I switched back to the original tires and the problem disappeared. I have been trying to reach Syed Qureshi at GM Head office, but have been unable to get through and he does not return my calls. All I want is for this problem to be recorded so that I can pursue it further next fall. I have been a loyal GM customer for 30 years, but I am now reassessing whether I will continue to buy GM cars. I would appreciate it if someone from GM could contact me to discuss this matter. Thank you for your time.

I have had my 2018 equinox for 3 months, and I loved it until 2 days ago when the transmission failed. The part is back-ordered, so obviously this is happening to other people. The dealership says it could be 2 days or 2 weeks.... and they don't have a loaner car. I'm frustrated.

I'm currently 26,000 kilometers and 17 months into ownership. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with my vehicle, including a faulty axle seal, radio receiver, and XM radio. Additionally, my driver's door lock and power window are currently not operational, and my check engine light has been flashing on and off for months. While there are still a few unsolved problems, such as occasional loud knocking while cornering and occasional transmission slipping, I'm hopeful that these can be resolved. Despite these challenges, I'm still looking forward to finding a new vehicle that better suits my needs.

The Equinox has a timing chain problem that can cause significant damage to the motor. It is unfortunate that this issue is not covered under warranty like it is for the Terrain, which has the same motor. As a result, many Equinox owners, including myself, have had to spend thousands of dollars to fix this issue. Additionally, I have experienced transmission problems with my car. While I am disappointed with the reliability of GM's cars, I believe it is important to prioritize reliability over aesthetics and technology.
