Chevrolet Equinox problems

The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common Chevrolet Equinox problems
Based on complaints from owners of Chevrolet Equinox cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Owners of various Equinox models, particularly from 2010 to 2013, have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. This problem can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage. The 2.4L Ecotec engine in these models has been highlighted for burning too much oil, which can result in engine knocking, defective spark plugs, and timing chain issues that may lead to complete engine failure.
- Delayed Acceleration Problems: Many Chevrolet Equinox generations suffer from delayed acceleration due to a slow response in the drive-by-wire electronic throttle system. This throttle lag can be frustrating for drivers and may even pose safety risks by causing dangerous situations on the road.
- Passlock Security: The Passlock security system, designed to prevent theft, has caused issues for Equinox owners. This system can sometimes malfunction, leading to difficulties for the actual owners in starting and driving their vehicles.
- Takata Recalls: A significant number of Chevy vehicles, including some Equinox models, have been recalled due to dangerous airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. These faulty inflators have been linked to serious safety concerns, prompting recalls in millions of vehicles to address the issue.
- Heater Blows Cold Air: A common complaint among Equinox owners, particularly in the 2006 model, is an unreliable climate control unit that results in the heater blowing cold air. This issue can impact the comfort and usability of the vehicle, especially in colder climates.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that Chevrolet Equinox owners have faced, ranging from engine-related concerns like oil consumption to safety and comfort issues such as delayed acceleration and HVAC problems. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to ensuring the longevity and reliability of Chevrolet Equinox vehicles.
What is the main problem with Chevy Equinox?
Most frequently, the complaint is for excessive oil consumption. Some owners report their Equinox consuming more than a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. By the time it's due for an oil change, the crankcase could be virtually empty.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox a reliable car?
The Chevrolet Equinox is renowned for its durability, with select models reaching over 320,000 km (200,000 miles). High safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS confirm the Equinox as a secure family vehicle. The Equinox offers economical ownership with low maintenance and insurance costs.
What was a bad year for Equinox?
A: Potential buyers should be wary of the 2005, 2006, 2010-2013, and 2016 Chevy Equinox models. These years have been flagged for various issues, including engine problems, heating system malfunctions, and excessive oil consumption.
What are the cons of a Chevy Equinox?
Cons
- Smaller cargo area compared to most competitors.
- Wallet-friendly base trim is special-order only.
- Despite turbocharging, the engine doesn't feel very lively.

I have a Chevy with all the safety options added. I really appreciated the option to get a gray interior, as most competitors only offer black. The back seat is spacious enough for four adults, even with the front passenger seat all the way back. The controls are conveniently located and easy to use. While the interior may not be considered premium, it has a solid and comfortable vibe, and provides a smooth ride. I chose this car based on its price, available safety features, and extra large passenger space, coupled with a softer ride compared to its peers. Although it may not be the fastest or have the best gas mileage, it is 3-5% less expensive than its competitors. The Apple and Android wireless integration is great, and after 14 months and 22,000 miles, I am getting 27 mpg in town and 31 mpg on the highway. I have had no repair issues, and the interior still looks brand new. Overall, this car checks all the boxes, despite being a bit slow. I highly recommend the safety package, especially the overhead safety camera view.

I decided to lease a 4 cylinder as I wasn't sure if I would like it, but the lease cost was excellent for 12,000 miles per year. Overall, I found the vehicle to be smooth, predictable in its stops, and very quiet. At first, I was hesitant about the center console with all the buttons, but I found that all the buttons were easy to understand and reach. Using a touch screen in a car can be difficult and dangerous as it takes your eyes off the road for too long. Hence, I prefer using the buttons and I really appreciate the back button that allows me to return to the previous screen, just like a computer. The seats are comfortable on long trips and the vehicle rides nicely. Although it is an SUV, the handling is just normal. The engine doesn't have a lot of pick up, but the trade-off is very good gas mileage. The Chevy My Link is excellent and even reads my text messages. The trunk area is not large, but when I put down the seats, it has plenty of room to move furniture. I would like to see a turbo in this vehicle as it would improve performance. However, I'm not sure if Chevy will do this as it is their base brand. If they did, I would consider buying one instead of leasing. I did drive a 6 cylinder GMC version and it was horrible. The one thing I don't like is the exterior styling. It is pleasant but very boxy. I will probably lease this vehicle again if the lease is at a great price. However, I'm not sure if the long-term trade-in or sale value is good enough to buy it.

I have had an issue with fuel odor in the cabin of my Equinox and have had to take it to the dealership three times. Although the dealership is accommodating, it is inconvenient for me to travel 130 miles round-trip for each visit, especially since the odor is sporadic. I am particularly concerned about my 11-month old grandchild's safety when I transport her in the vehicle. Despite the dealership's efforts, the issue has not been resolved yet. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions from others who may have experienced a similar problem. Thank you!

Hey there! I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same issue as me with the interior lights in their Equinox? Sometimes they dim so much that it's hard to read the speedometer. I've had the sensor replaced three times already, but it still seems to be happening. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but it seems like it might be a bigger issue. Also, has anyone else noticed that the snow sensor pops up at 37 degrees, regardless of whether the car is in the garage or on the road? On a separate note, I've found that the gas mileage is a bit lower than what was advertised. Has anyone else experienced this too? Thanks for your help!

I wasn't too keen on getting into the 2020 Equinox, based on my past experiences with Equinoxes from other years. But let me tell you, the difference is like night and day! Once I got in and drove it, I was absolutely sold - not to mention how comfortable and captivating the seats are. If I'm advocating for a product, it's because I honestly believe in it 100%!

The PCV valve froze and caused a rear main engine seal blowout, resulting in a costly repair of around $4000. Despite the fact that GM has a TSB 14882 for this known issue, my VIN number is not included. However, after conducting research, I discovered that hundreds of GM vehicles with the 2.4 lTR engine have experienced the same issue, and GM is telling everyone that their VINs are not included in this TSB. GM's lack of accountability is disappointing, and their excuses are unsatisfactory. It is evident that GM only cares about their customers until they discover issues, and then they become indifferent. Despite this, I remain confident in my research and my knowledge of the issue at hand.

The car shut down while going 65mph in very heavy traffic, with no warning lights on the dashboard. Despite stalling again 10 minutes later, it was able to start up and travel 200 yards. This event occurred on 07/11/2020.

I purchased this vehicle used with 70,000 miles on it from the original owner who assured me that there were no issues. Generally, two-owner vehicles are a safe bet as people tend to take good care of them. However, after driving it for about 2,000 miles, I noticed that the engine had become quite loud. I took it to the dealership and they informed me that it needed a new timing chain. Fortunately, the vehicle was still covered under the factory warranty. After the repair, I decided to purchase an extended powertrain warranty for added peace of mind, which cost me $1,800. Unfortunately, a few thousand miles later, the vehicle started burning oil and I had to take it back to the dealership. They replaced the pistons, rings, and other parts, but I only had to pay my deductible of $100 thanks to the warranty. However, just two months later, the transmission started hesitating and slipping, and I had to take it back to the dealership again. They informed me that it needed a whole new transmission, and I was surprised to find out that the warranty only covered up to $3,000, leaving me with a $1,200 bill. This vehicle has been quite a headache and has spent more time in the repair shop than on the road. I have had to replace other parts like the throttle body sensor, which caused the vehicle to shut down and not go over 30 mph, which was quite frustrating. However, I am hopeful that with a whole new engine and transmission, I can get another 30,000 miles out of it. These are only the major repairs, and I have had to replace other parts as well. In conclusion, I would not recommend this vehicle. Save yourself the money, headache, and time. When I am ready to replace this vehicle, I will be going back to Toyota.

Engine, engine, engine. I bought my 2010 Equinox brand new in 2009. Unfortunately, at 23,000 miles, the 2.4 liter engine started using a lot of motor oil. Although it was under warranty, the dealer's solution of cleaning the pistons and replacing the top side of the engine seemed inadequate to me. I was pleasantly surprised when they replaced the entire motor just a week later. However, at 80,000 miles, the same problem occurred again - oil, oil, oil. As a result, I decided to switch to a Ford and I absolutely love it!

My 2020 AWD LT Equinox is currently in the service center for fluid leaking out of the transmission. Despite having only 500 miles on it and owning it for just 3 months, I am confident that the issue will be resolved promptly and efficiently. While I am disappointed and frustrated by this unexpected setback, I remain confident in the overall reliability and safety of my vehicle. I trust that the service center will provide the necessary repairs to ensure that my car continues to meet my high standards.
