Chevrolet Equinox problems

The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common Chevrolet Equinox problems
Based on complaints from owners of Chevrolet Equinox cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Owners of various Equinox models, particularly from 2010 to 2013, have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. This problem can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage. The 2.4L Ecotec engine in these models has been highlighted for burning too much oil, which can result in engine knocking, defective spark plugs, and timing chain issues that may lead to complete engine failure.
- Delayed Acceleration Problems: Many Chevrolet Equinox generations suffer from delayed acceleration due to a slow response in the drive-by-wire electronic throttle system. This throttle lag can be frustrating for drivers and may even pose safety risks by causing dangerous situations on the road.
- Passlock Security: The Passlock security system, designed to prevent theft, has caused issues for Equinox owners. This system can sometimes malfunction, leading to difficulties for the actual owners in starting and driving their vehicles.
- Takata Recalls: A significant number of Chevy vehicles, including some Equinox models, have been recalled due to dangerous airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. These faulty inflators have been linked to serious safety concerns, prompting recalls in millions of vehicles to address the issue.
- Heater Blows Cold Air: A common complaint among Equinox owners, particularly in the 2006 model, is an unreliable climate control unit that results in the heater blowing cold air. This issue can impact the comfort and usability of the vehicle, especially in colder climates.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that Chevrolet Equinox owners have faced, ranging from engine-related concerns like oil consumption to safety and comfort issues such as delayed acceleration and HVAC problems. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to ensuring the longevity and reliability of Chevrolet Equinox vehicles.
What is the main problem with Chevy Equinox?
Most frequently, the complaint is for excessive oil consumption. Some owners report their Equinox consuming more than a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. By the time it's due for an oil change, the crankcase could be virtually empty.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox a reliable car?
The Chevrolet Equinox is renowned for its durability, with select models reaching over 320,000 km (200,000 miles). High safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS confirm the Equinox as a secure family vehicle. The Equinox offers economical ownership with low maintenance and insurance costs.
What was a bad year for Equinox?
A: Potential buyers should be wary of the 2005, 2006, 2010-2013, and 2016 Chevy Equinox models. These years have been flagged for various issues, including engine problems, heating system malfunctions, and excessive oil consumption.
What are the cons of a Chevy Equinox?

I recently traded in my 2011 Equinox LT for a 2017 model. I was looking for the same body style I had before the 2018 redesign and was lucky enough to find a gently used fleet vehicle classified as LT w/ 1LT. It's fully loaded with features like heated seats, temperature control, running lights, and more. While I don't necessarily need all of these features, they are certainly fun to have. I'm happy to report that I'm getting 29.1 mpgs while commuting, which is even better than my 2011 model. I can't wait to see how it performs on a long highway trip! I've actually purchased two Equinox vehicles now because I love them so much. They are the perfect size for my needs and provide a safe and comfortable ride for me and my family. Even my tall family members (up to 6'3

If you're considering buying the new Equinox, I would highly recommend upgrading to the 2.0 Liter with the 9-speed transmission. I have owned several models over the years and found that the smaller motors are not great in the snow or on the highway. Recently, I traded in my 2016 for the 2018 Premier 2.0 Liter AWD with the 9-speed transmission and it has all the bells and whistles. I particularly love the lane assist feature, which makes driving a breeze. The car drives and rides like a Cadillac, and the leather seats with fans are a real treat. The 19

I drove both the standard 1.5L models and the 2.0L model with AWD and Turbo of this vehicle. While I found the 1.5L models to be underpowered and boring to drive, the 2.0L model was a completely different experience! With around 260HP, it's incredibly quick to get going and the acceleration is simply incredible. The transmission shifts seamlessly and smoothly, making for a truly enjoyable ride. Overall, I think Chevrolet did a great job with this re-design! If you're interested, I highly recommend going for the 2.0L model with AWD and Turbo. You won't be disappointed!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Equinox 2.4L AWD Premier that I picked up in March 2019. Overall, it's been a great car! While the dash and DIC could be improved, I've found that most vehicles today have similar issues with their controls. When I purchased the car, it had 35,000 miles on it, so I decided to do a round of maintenance on it just to be safe. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was very easy to work on. I did the transfer/differential/transmission fluid changes, cleaned the MAF and Throttle Body, and did an intake valve cleaning procedure. Since then, the vehicle has been running great! It handles our muddy gravel roads with ease, which is a huge plus since we live in a rural area. Our Equinox is flex fuel capable, and we've been using E85 since it's been $.80 to $1 less than regular gas in our area for the past two years. We've found that the acceleration of the 2.4L is more than adequate for our needs, and the vehicle DIC showed a life mpg of 25 mpg when we got it. On flex fuel, it has been a combined 21 mpg, but with the low price of E85, it's still cheaper per mile than using regular gas and getting better mpg.

I got the 2016 Equinox LT AWD in January 2016 and my wife loved it. It's a great little SUV for her, especially during the snowy Iowa winters. We opted for the 2.4 to save on gas and it's been great for getting around town. However, I do regret not going with the V6 when it comes to passing performance on the highway. Despite this, the AWD works great in the snow, even during heavy snowfall. As a big guy at 6'3

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your Chevy vehicle. It must have been frustrating to have it break down after only two months of use. It sounds like the damage was extensive and unfortunately not repairable. It is disappointing that you had to use your vacation money to purchase a new engine. I understand your frustration and hope that your next vehicle will provide you with a better experience.

I purchased this car for my wife and she loved it for the first three months. Unfortunately, we have experienced a number of issues since then. We understand that normal wear and tear is to be expected for a car that has been on the road for five years, but we have had to replace the transmission and timing chain at 45K miles. Additionally, the sunroof drains have been prone to clogging, causing water to leak into the car. We have also had some issues with the tires, TPMS, and spark plugs. I have made an appointment with the dealer to address some stalling issues, and have become quite familiar with the service center operators. At 60K miles, I am hesitant to sell this car to anyone, as I do not want to pass on any potential issues.

I purchased a 2014 Equinox with 86k miles, but unfortunately, by the time it reached 100k miles, it began to idle very roughly and stall when coming to a complete stop. After having it inspected, I was informed that I needed to replace the VVT solenoid, exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and o2 sensor. Additionally, I was informed that my car was short 3.5 quarts of oil, and that Equinox's are known for excessive oil consumption. Despite these challenges, I am now well-informed about the maintenance needs of this vehicle and am confident in my ability to make an informed decision about my next car purchase.

I purchased my Equinox on June 20th, 2017. Unfortunately, on September 11th, 2017, the car wouldn't start. I immediately called roadside assistance and they sent a tow truck which jumped the battery and the car started. I ran the car for over half an hour and drove it for another half an hour. However, when I turned it off and tried to start it again 45 minutes later, it was dead. The next day, I had it towed to the dealer. As of today, September 13th, 2017, I still have not received any response from the dealer regarding the issue. I am confident that the dealer will be able to diagnose and fix the problem, whether it is the battery, alternator, starter, or parasite drain. Despite this setback, I am still satisfied with my purchase and look forward to enjoying my Equinox for many years to come.
