Chevrolet Equinox problems

The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common Chevrolet Equinox problems
Based on complaints from owners of Chevrolet Equinox cars, several common problems have been identified:
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Owners of various Equinox models, particularly from 2010 to 2013, have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. This problem can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage. The 2.4L Ecotec engine in these models has been highlighted for burning too much oil, which can result in engine knocking, defective spark plugs, and timing chain issues that may lead to complete engine failure.
- Delayed Acceleration Problems: Many Chevrolet Equinox generations suffer from delayed acceleration due to a slow response in the drive-by-wire electronic throttle system. This throttle lag can be frustrating for drivers and may even pose safety risks by causing dangerous situations on the road.
- Passlock Security: The Passlock security system, designed to prevent theft, has caused issues for Equinox owners. This system can sometimes malfunction, leading to difficulties for the actual owners in starting and driving their vehicles.
- Takata Recalls: A significant number of Chevy vehicles, including some Equinox models, have been recalled due to dangerous airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. These faulty inflators have been linked to serious safety concerns, prompting recalls in millions of vehicles to address the issue.
- Heater Blows Cold Air: A common complaint among Equinox owners, particularly in the 2006 model, is an unreliable climate control unit that results in the heater blowing cold air. This issue can impact the comfort and usability of the vehicle, especially in colder climates.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that Chevrolet Equinox owners have faced, ranging from engine-related concerns like oil consumption to safety and comfort issues such as delayed acceleration and HVAC problems. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to ensuring the longevity and reliability of Chevrolet Equinox vehicles.
What is the main problem with Chevy Equinox?
Most frequently, the complaint is for excessive oil consumption. Some owners report their Equinox consuming more than a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. By the time it's due for an oil change, the crankcase could be virtually empty.
Is the Chevrolet Equinox a reliable car?
The Chevrolet Equinox is renowned for its durability, with select models reaching over 320,000 km (200,000 miles). High safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS confirm the Equinox as a secure family vehicle. The Equinox offers economical ownership with low maintenance and insurance costs.
What was a bad year for Equinox?
A: Potential buyers should be wary of the 2005, 2006, 2010-2013, and 2016 Chevy Equinox models. These years have been flagged for various issues, including engine problems, heating system malfunctions, and excessive oil consumption.
What are the cons of a Chevy Equinox?
Cons
- Smaller cargo area compared to most competitors.
- Wallet-friendly base trim is special-order only.
- Despite turbocharging, the engine doesn't feel very lively.
- Interior materials quality is disappointing considering the price.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your Equinox for the past 3 months! It's a great looking vehicle both inside and out, and I'm happy to hear that you find the infotainment center easy to use. The ride is quite comfortable and handles bumps and potholes with ease. It sounds like the power in the vehicle is just right for your needs and more. Keep enjoying your Equinox!

Just bought a 4 cylinder Equinox.Have less than 500 miles on it.Good looks, great value, very comfortable, not going to win any races. Mileage claims I knew going in were significantly overstated but that's O.K.30 years ago I bought a 1981 Cadillac Eldorado with the V-8-6-4 engine.State of the art technology @ the time. The only trouble was that the car seemed to be driving you rather than you driving it since it would decide when to run on 8 or 6 or 4 cylinders. A real technical flop for GM as it was discontinued after one year. Driving the new Equinox in the ECO mode reminded me of this- shifting into 5th or 6th gear and slow to respond on the downshift.I've since turned it off.

This is our third Equinox. We have been very happy with our prior two and we are pleased to say that this vehicle is even smoother and quieter than the 2018 model. The ride is incredibly smooth and my wife even thinks it looks larger, although it must be an illusion. We are extremely satisfied so far and would highly recommend it to anyone.

I recently test drove a new Equinox RS package and compared its ride, power, and features to those of the Rav4 and CRv. While it didn't ride as smoothly as a Buick, it was still more comfortable than the Rav4. The Equinox had decent power, slightly better than the CRv, but the Rav4 had the edge. The RS was visually appealing and had the same features as the fully loaded models of the Rav4 and CRv. The power moon roof was a great feature that provided extra lighting at night, and the heated seats and steering wheel were especially nice during the winter. The luggage space was better than the CRv and comparable to the Rav4. The only downside was the price, as the Rav4 offers the same features for $2,000 less (if you can find one). Overall, I would definitely consider this nice small SUV. Don't be swayed by negative reviews from Edmunds, as some may be financially motivated.

GM was aware that the charge air cooler outlet air tube may be disconnected on some 2019 Equinox models but continued to sell them, which unfortunately put customers in harm's way. Within just 4 weeks of purchasing this vehicle, while traveling at 70 mph on the interstate, 300 miles from home, the car suddenly banged, shook and went into reduced power mode. I drove slowly to a safe area and was towed to a Chevrolet dealer. Although I was initially told that the car was fixed, it happened again twice more in the next 4 days. I had to rent a car to get home. GM had my car fixed a third time and transported the vehicle back to my dealership 10 days later. Unfortunately, I do not feel safe driving this model, so the brand new Equinox is currently sitting in my garage. I have had some issues with GM customer service, but I am hopeful that we can work together to resolve this matter.

Vehicle year: 2019
I want to start by saying that I don't hate the Equinox. In fact, my family and I traded in our awesome 2014 model for a 2019 version back in March. At first, everything seemed great and we loved everything about the vehicle. However, on the second day, I hit the gas to pass someone and the duct from the turbo to the throttle body blew off. I took it to the dealer and they pushed the hose back on. Unfortunately, we started experiencing some glitches with the info-tainment system where it would randomly make the ring sound and the screen would get really hot and freeze. Despite the dealer fixing the duct problem and replacing the waste gate, the same issue occurred again during a family trip. At this point, I had lost all trust in the vehicle and would not feel safe driving it on any trip. After a couple of months, we decided to trade it in for a VW. Although I am a Chevy guy, I do not support this 2019 line up.

My Equinox has been a disappointment since I purchased it less than a year ago. The stabilitrac indicator keeps coming on, which leads to further issues. The reduced engine power warning appears, causing the car to slow down to 20 mph and start chugging. The dash then displays 'starter disabled' and the car shuts down, disabling all essential functions such as the brakes and steering. This has happened twice, and I cannot justify paying to fix a recurring problem. My confidence in Chevy has been shaken.

I bought my son a 2010 Equinox LS for his 16th birthday, with the agreement that he would cover maintenance and gas costs. I opted for a GM certified Preowned car, hoping that repairs and maintenance would be reasonable for him. The GM CPO booklet boasts that you can 'Buy with Confidence' and 'No worries'. However, I have had some issues with the car. The Equinox had 54,000 miles when I bought it, and now has 68,000 miles. Unfortunately, it has been in the shop three times for major AC complaints and twice for Stabiltrak Braking issues. The dealer certified the car with aftermarket air conditioner parts, which is a clear violation of the GM 172 point inspection. The car also required both front and rear brakes recently, as the dealer did not replace them during the certification process with 54,000 miles on the car. All of these repairs have cost me over $4,000 in the first 14,000 miles of ownership. However, I believe that GM could improve its CPO program with better customer support and higher quality standards for all dealers. I understand that all car manufacturers build cars with defects and that dealerships can vary in quality, but GM Executive Leadership should demand better performance from all its employees, partners, and dealers. They set the tone for quality at the factory and what a dealer gets away with. I suggest that the bar for quality should be set higher. Recently, my son took the car to the local dealer near his college for a Stabiltrak warning light issue. The repair estimate was over $1,300, as the car needed new front and rear brakes and Stabiltrak repaired. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or recommendations. Thank you!I called the dealership to inquire about the car and was informed that the brake pads were still the original ones, even though the car had already covered 54,000 miles. As a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle, the car should have had at least 50% of the brake pad remaining according to the 172 point inspection. Additionally, the car had aftermarket parts in its CPO history. I decided to file a complaint with GM Customer Support to question the overall certification experience. They asked me to send in a formal complaint with all the supporting documents. While the complaint was still pending, I paid for the $1,300 repair as my son needed the car. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks later, the Stabiltrak light came back on again. I was really upset as I had just paid the dealer $1,300 and the Stabiltrak was still not fixed. I called GM Customer Support to find out the status of my complaint, but was informed that the complaint had been escalated to a Senior Advisor and he closed the case by referring me back to the dealer. I was disappointed that no one at GM explained their position to me or even asked how my car was doing after the repairs. If they had asked, they would have known that I paid $1,300 to the local dealer and still had the same Stabiltrak warning light on. I then sent a complaint (via certified mail to confirm receipt) to Mary Barra's (CEO of GM) office, but never heard anything back. My son took the car back to the dealer that charged us $1,300 and today they claim the Stabiltrak error code is different and requires another $450 to fix. In the end, I would have likely saved money, received a better quality vehicle, and received better customer service from a local corner used car lot than I received from purchasing a GM certified car.

I have a 2022 Chevy Equinox with only 2100 miles on it, which I bought brand new. Unfortunately, the infosystems have completely stopped working. Despite waiting for over a month for a replacement, I have been informed by my Chevy Dealer that they are currently on back order. Additionally, I had to replace the battery just yesterday. It is disappointing to experience these issues with a vehicle that is so new and has so few miles on it.
