Chevrolet Equinox problems

The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.

An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.

First generation (2005)

The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.

The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.

Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.

For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.

The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.

Production ended in May 2009.

The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common Chevrolet Equinox problems

Based on complaints from owners of Chevrolet Equinox cars, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Excessive Oil Consumption: Owners of various Equinox models, particularly from 2010 to 2013, have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. This problem can lead to the need for frequent oil top-ups and potential engine damage. The 2.4L Ecotec engine in these models has been highlighted for burning too much oil, which can result in engine knocking, defective spark plugs, and timing chain issues that may lead to complete engine failure.
  2. Delayed Acceleration Problems: Many Chevrolet Equinox generations suffer from delayed acceleration due to a slow response in the drive-by-wire electronic throttle system. This throttle lag can be frustrating for drivers and may even pose safety risks by causing dangerous situations on the road.
  3. Passlock Security: The Passlock security system, designed to prevent theft, has caused issues for Equinox owners. This system can sometimes malfunction, leading to difficulties for the actual owners in starting and driving their vehicles.
  4. Takata Recalls: A significant number of Chevy vehicles, including some Equinox models, have been recalled due to dangerous airbag inflators manufactured by Takata. These faulty inflators have been linked to serious safety concerns, prompting recalls in millions of vehicles to address the issue.
  5. Heater Blows Cold Air: A common complaint among Equinox owners, particularly in the 2006 model, is an unreliable climate control unit that results in the heater blowing cold air. This issue can impact the comfort and usability of the vehicle, especially in colder climates.

These problems highlight some of the key issues that Chevrolet Equinox owners have faced, ranging from engine-related concerns like oil consumption to safety and comfort issues such as delayed acceleration and HVAC problems. Addressing these issues promptly and effectively is crucial to ensuring the longevity and reliability of Chevrolet Equinox vehicles.

What was a bad year for Equinox?

A: Potential buyers should be wary of the 2005, 2006, 2010-2013, and 2016 Chevy Equinox models. These years have been flagged for various issues, including engine problems, heating system malfunctions, and excessive oil consumption.

What are the cons of a Chevy Equinox?

Latest negative Chevrolet Equinox car reviews

  1. Andrew Okuneva 2025-03-27

    Vehicle year: 2011

Thanks to my extended warranty, I was able to address several repair issues that arose after 50,000 miles. Although I had to replace the a/c compressor and condensers multiple times, and even had to overhaul the engine due to oil burning issues, I am confident that I made the right choice in purchasing the warranty. Currently, I am experiencing catalytic converter issues, which I believe are related to the previous oil burning issues. Despite these challenges, I am grateful for the support of the service team at the dealership, who have been incredibly helpful. On a positive note, the interior of the car has remained comfortable and durable, even after hauling a lot of cargo over the past 4 years. While the mileage has been disappointing and the acceleration sluggish, I have found the car to be reliable overall. Although there are some blind spots due to the pillars and side mirrors, I have been able to navigate them safely. I am confident that I made the right choice in purchasing this car, and I am grateful for the support of the dealership's service team.

  2. Santiago Dibbert 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2005

It sounds like you've had a bit of a tough time with your car. It's a shame because it was such an amazing car when you first bought it. It seems like you've had to replace quite a few parts over the years, which can be frustrating. I hope you're able to get it all sorted out soon. On the bright side, at least it's roomy!

  3. Morton Braun 2025-03-22

    Vehicle year: 2012

Hey there! Just wanted to share a quick tip for those who are concerned about their MPG. I used to have the same issue, but I found that adjusting my driving habits made a huge difference. For example, I started paying more attention to my stops and starts at stop lights, and it really paid off. On a recent 1000 mile trip, I kept track of my speeds and fuel efficiency, and found that driving at a steady 58mph on a flat road gave me an impressive 36.3mpg! Overall, I averaged 29.3mpg on the trip, with 90% of the miles on the highway and the rest in the city. So, if you're experiencing a lot of stop-and-go traffic, it might be worth taking a closer look at your driving habits. By the way, I did notice that the back hatch connection can come loose and rattle over bumps, so keep an eye on that. But overall, I've had a great experience with this car and would definitely recommend it. Thanks for reading!

  4. Gerson Stamm 2025-03-20

    Vehicle year: 2005

You know, the transmission in this car is a bit different. It doesn't have a dipstick, so you can't check or add fluid yourself. You'll need to take it to a transmission shop or dealership, which can cost around $250 just for a fluid change. Unfortunately, even after doing this, the transmission may still fail. If that happens, it can cost up to $3000 to replace it. It's really frustrating when the car isn't even worth that much anymore. I regret buying this car so much!

  5. Brady Kreiger 2025-03-20

    Vehicle year: 2021

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2021 Chevy Equinox LT and noticed a wind noise coming from the driver and passenger side while driving at higher speeds. I took it back to the dealer and they checked the door alignment, but unfortunately, the noise persisted. They mentioned that the noise may be coming from the rearview mirrors and there may not be a solution for it. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue and if there are any tips or tricks to alleviate the noise? Thank you!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 2014 1LT Equinox with the 6-cylinder engine. I have put 600 miles on it so far and I must say, I am very satisfied with my purchase. The acceleration is great, it is comfortable and quiet, and it drives and handles well. I have seen some comments about less than precise steering and handling, but I have not noticed that in my Equinox. I wonder if that has to do with the fact that the 4-cylinder Equinox has electric power steering, while the 6-cylinder has hydraulic power steering. By the way, my gas mileage with the V6 has been HIGHER than the EPA estimate - even during break-in. It has been two years since I bought this car and I am still very happy with it. I have had no squeaks, no rattles, no problems, and no repairs. The reason I bought this particular car was the V-6 engine and the premium Pioneer sound system, and I have been very happy with both. On the highway, driving from Chicago to Detroit, I averaged 26 to 28 MPG, according to the onboard computer, and had all the power I needed to merge, keep up with traffic and pass when needed, all without high RPMs.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2012 car. I've put 42000 miles on it and it's been a great ride! I've only had to take it in for oil changes and tire rotations, which is amazing. With a 4 cyl. FWD, I get about 33 mpg on the highway going 65, 28 going 78, and around 20 in stop and go city driving. I did notice a jumpy transmission shift on occasion, but it's not always the case. It wasn't great in the snow, but that was because I didn't have the right tires on it. I just put better tires for snow on it last week, so I'm excited to see how it performs. I drive to Florida twice a year from Pennsylvania, and it's always a comfortable ride. I make sure to change the oil every 5000 miles, and after reading about the poor oil consumption, I'll start watching it more closely. So far, I haven't had any oil problems yet. Thanks for listening!

This is the third update of my 2019 Equinox. After approximately 37,500 miles, the Equinox drives beautifully and has been worry-free. There were only two warranty issues, but they were immediately resolved. Overall, this has been one of the best cars I've owned. After eleven months and over 10,000 miles of worry-free driving, I am even more impressed with my 2019 Equinox. It's a pleasure to drive. After three years and 31,000 miles, my 2019 Equinox Premier continues to perform wonderfully. I have not had any warranty issues. So far, my 2019 Equinox is one of the best vehicles I've purchased in the last fifty years. Our 2019 Equinox is a pleasure to drive. The 1.4 L engine has plenty of pep to handle any driving situation. After 5,400 miles of rural and urban driving, the overall mileage is 29.5 mpg. We especially appreciate the Confidence and Convenience II Package with the latest comfort and safety features. So far, our Equinox has been trouble-free. The only negative is the wide turning radius—sometimes parking can be a challenge. After fifty years of purchasing new vehicles, our 2019 Equinox Premier is the best!

I recently purchased a 2022 Equinox LT and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed! Despite some reviews claiming that it lacks power and has a rough ride, I have found the opposite to be true. In fact, I find the ride to be smooth and the power to be more than sufficient. The interior is spacious and comfortable, and the entertainment system is excellent and user-friendly. Additionally, the gas mileage is quite good. As someone who commutes 48 miles round trip to work, I can attest to this. I highly recommend this vehicle!
