2017 Chevrolet Equinox problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.

An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.

First generation (2005)

The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.

The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.

Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.

For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.

The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.

Production ended in May 2009.

The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common 2017 Chevrolet Equinox problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Transmission Issues:
    • Owners reported dangerous lurching while gears change, loss of forward movement, and bouncing/grinding due to failed transmission components. Repairs attempted by dealerships often failed to resolve the issue, leading to potential rear-end collision risks.
    • Another issue highlighted was the gear shift slipping into other gears without pressing the button, posing a significant safety hazard, especially at high speeds.
  2. Engine Problems:
    • Excessive oil consumption was a prevalent issue, leading to various complications like rear main seal leaks, cracked exhaust manifolds, and timing chain problems. These issues often surfaced even with low mileage on the vehicle.
    • Complaints included engine shuddering during shifting and hard shifts in lower power bands, indicating potential transmission and engine coordination problems.
  3. Electrical Problems:
    • Instances of no-start situations due to starter issues, instrument lights and Bluetooth malfunctions, and radio failures were reported. The radio malfunction was particularly concerning as it controlled essential functions like heat/AC, backup camera, and navigation systems.
    • A severe case involved a fire starting under the dashboard while waiting at a red light, leading to the vehicle being destroyed. This highlights a critical safety concern related to electrical failures.

These problems reported by owners of the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox underscore significant safety and reliability issues that need attention. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to ensure the safety and performance of the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-15
  • VIN: 2GNFLEEK5H6
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I bought my 2017 Chevy equinox around October or November of 2018. Since owning this car I have had nothing but problems with the oil. The oil had been burning at such an excessive rate that GM finally stated they would need to replace the engine! I have continued to change the oil before it need to be changed due to it burning so quickly. After the engine was replaced I informed GM of the loud noises and informed them 3 weeks after they replaced everything that the oil was again empty! They are now ignoring me and won’t do anything further! I am a single mother of 3 kids trying to make ends meet and I bought a car they knew and have known has oil consumption issues which has caused my car to have major issues. The car randomly can to a full stop while I was driving and I am so lucky I wasn’t going 80 miles an hour because it would of killed me all because the car had burned the oil just 2 weeks after an oil change! GM continues to ignore me and will not replace the car or fix anything! I started having issues in August of 2019 and they replaced the engine on jul 14 2022 and I am certain this car is not going to make it much longer it has ac and heat problems as well again all started after replacement and still have oil issues

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • VIN: 2GNALCEK6H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 2-11-24 a light came on about system reset plus speed reduced to 20. I drove home 4 miles. Called Chevy Corp. Told needs to be checked. Dealership said if drivable come in.Light was safety to get off Rd or to garage. Timing chain slipped and chewed up teeth spreading metal everywhere and killed motor. No warning. It's a known prob with Equinox as I have seen class action lawsuits. Advisor even said need another lawsuit to solve it. Tried going thru insurance but advisor said normal wear and tear. Chevy dealership or corp will not help or give me a rental car. $10300 to get a refurbished motor and hope it doesn't happen again. Same car burns oil had sensor issues on block and every 1-2 years battery dies. Paid 65 to replace it one time under warranty. Timing chain doesn't slip they break to stop car. Advisor says a few mechanical issues caused it. To me it shouldn't do that if made rt. I could have been in an accident if on highway. Insurance won't cover under comp part of policy yet if hit and totaled it's paid.A diff garage said belt or chain shouldn't need replacement until 100k miles. I only have 77k.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
  • VIN: 2GNFLFEK6H6
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to address a critical issue involving my 2017 Chevrolet vehicle, which poses a significant safety hazard. I purchased this car from Faulkner Subaru in Bethlehem in 2022. The specific component failure relates to the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system, particularly the lack of a traditional PCV valve and the presence of a fixed orifice vacuum port in the intake manifold. This component is available for inspection upon request. The safety of myself, my passengers, and other road users was compromised due to the sudden and significant oil leakage caused by the malfunctioning PCV system. This not only endangered our safety but also posed a serious risk to others on the road. While the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, it is a well-documented issue with ongoing litigation against Chevrolet. However, there are currently no active recalls addressing the problem. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. The incident occurred suddenly while driving, with the strong smell of burning oil and subsequent oil leakage being the first indications of a problem. Your immediate attention to this matter and intervention on behalf of affected consumers is crucial. I urge Chevrolet to address this safety concern through a formal safety recall and to take responsibility for rectifying this manufacturing defect.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-25
  • VIN: 2GNALCEK8H6
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While driving everything went blank on my dashboard even radio screen then steering wheel locked up on me for maybe 1-2 seconds then that’s when I got a quick flash come on dashboard and said service power steering or steering wheel. And quickly went away. This could have risked me and my 2 year old toddler life. I took my car back to dealership Lexus of Dayton but they said there was nothing showing on my dashboard. I told them that it went away. So they suggested to take it to a Chevy dealership because it may be cheaper to have it put on a diagnostic because they would charge me 189.00 to do so. Which I feel I shouldn’t have to pay for.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
  • VIN: 2GNFLEEK8H6
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: While I was driving the rear main seal went out and I lost all my oil. Luckily I was close to home, could have blown my motor. This is a 1500.00 to a 2500.00 fix. This happened around feb.26 2024 and my car is still sitting I'm my drive until I can save up the money to fix it. Also the few places I have called around to fix it have had other equinoxes in for the same thind,22 that I know of.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-30
  • VIN: 2GNALCEK4H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving when my car started knocking. I pulled over on the highway and noticed oil all over the undercarriage of the vehicle. I immediately drove to the dealership and had the mechanics take a look. They came back and said, "The rear main seal was leaking due to a plugged PCV port that froze because of the cold weather. This caused high crankcase pressure to build, which blew out the rear main seal." Looking online, I found that this appears to be a common problem. The dealership said they could fix it by drilling the hole in the PCV port bigger, but there is currently no recall on this issue. Just to replace the seal, they are charging $2500, with an additional few hundred dollars to enlarge the PCV port. Thankfully, I was able to pull over and get it to the dealership. I can only imagine how bad things could have been if I hadn't been in a relatively safe spot.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
  • VIN: 2GNFLGEK8H6
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: My son was driving and all of a sudden the check engine light came on, it got really loud and stalled out while he was driving. Luckily he was on a road with a low speed limit. If this had happened on the highway it could have been extremely dangerous. He is a 16 year old new driver. We took it in and were told the rear main seal blew and we need a new engine. Apparently this is a know issue with this car. We are now in the process of installing a new engine on a car we have taken very good care of with less than 100,000 miles and still has a car payment. There were no prior warnings and the issue was confirmed by the dealer.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-15
  • VIN: 2GNALDEK4H1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Car started to leak oil, took it for repair was told it has a pcv valve issue, that can lead to main seal failure. This is a 13 hour repair, at a cost of approximately $2500.00 This issue can happen again, and especially in cold weather. So even if you get it repaired this pcv/valve issue can cause main seal failure again. From Mechanic Report: •Finding: .Other engine oil leak issue •Recommendation: See technician notes below •Technician's Notes: Rear main seal leaking. Lower oil pan very likely leaking as well. PCV system failing caused Excessive engine pressure which in turn caused rear main to fail. There is a GM TSB specifically for this issue. Without repairing PCV, seals will fail again. Repairing PCV system will require intake and valve cover removal. •Full recommendation: •-Remove valve cover and clean pcv passages •-Remove intake, replace pcv valve, and clean pcv passages. •-Replace rear main seal •-Replace oil pan seal My vehicle mileage is Odometer 68,201mi so I am out of the warranty window.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 2GNALCEK2H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Took the vehicle in due to poor function to be addressed and the vehicle was found to have no oil in the engine. 5 quarts of oil was just placed in the engine at the beginning of the week and was told that the engine is burning oil very badly. This is very concerning as I am seeing that other people are having this exact issue, often while driving on the highway. We are only driving this vehicle if absolutely necessary and do not have the money to replace the engine and the pistons. We have been diligent with frequent oil changes but we cannot keep pouring oil in this vehicle only for it to be gone within days or hours. This is a huge safety risk and could cause injury or death to myself, my children or others on the road. The check engine light came on after the oil was added. Took to our mechanic and they confirmed that the entire engine or at least all the pistons will need to be replaced in order to make this vehicle safe for driving. Called General Motors about this issue and was informed this very vehicle is in class-action lawsuit for the very same thing my vehicle is experiencing and that a recall should be coming out, but no one knows when this recall will come out. This is a common problem seen with the equinoxes and it needs to be fixed by the dealer or General Motors.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-16
  • VIN: 2GNALBEK5H1
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Cold weather here apparently caused the rear main seal to blow out and leak all of my oil out of the vehicle very quickly. Now I’m left with a car that will not run, extended warranty will not cover. I’ve read MANY stories of the same exact thing happening to equinoxes. If this is so common why is it not covered? I have 2 small children 6 and under and work full time. I cannot afford a new vehicle. So disappointing this is such a common problem yet not covered at all leaving people without a vehicle.

  • Summary: The PCV System froze causing the rear main seal to blow on my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox Premier. No prior warnings such as check engine light of any kind. In a matter of one minute I was driving 65 miles an hour on the highway to a warning popping up on my LCD screen stating "engine oil pressure low - shut down engine now". Didn't even have an opportunity to shut it down, within 30 seconds of that message the car shut itself down. This could have caused injury to myself and others but i was able to get to shoulder before total engine failure. This happened after several days of below 0 temperatures, snow and ice.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-16
  • VIN: 2GNFLGEK1H6
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Our temperature recently dropped below zero temps. Our PCV system froze which caused an obstruction. This caused the crankcase to pressurize blowing out the seals, losing all oil, and catastrophic engine failure. Our safety could have been impacted as we live in a rural community with subzero temps. Being stranded without service on a phone or vehicle to stay warm could have catastrophic consequences on human life. Losing engine power on a busy road could lead to a crash etc. The problem was confirmed by the dealer. This is a known issue in 2.4L engines as seen in bulletin 14882 from March 2015. The vehicle was inspected by the GM dealership in our town who confirmed this was the issue. There was no warning prior to the failure- the incident happened while driving home from work- at the time of failure the stabiltrak and reduced engine power came on.

  2. Maximilian Klocko 2024-10-05

The car was good, however, the timing chain stretched and destroyed the head, which has resulted in me being unable to use it for the past six months. Despite this setback, I am confident that the car can be repaired and will continue to be a reliable vehicle in the future.

  3. Ned Ullrich 2024-09-11

The limited warranty notwithstanding, it is concerning that the doors are rusting on the bottom inside edge of doors in vehicles that are less than 4 years old and have travelled less than 85,000 miles. It is a known manufacturing issue that GM and dealers are aware of, and a recall was issued for earlier models. This experience has left me hesitant to purchase from GM again.

  4. Hilbert Donnelly 2024-06-19

I recently rented this brand new UV for a week and overall had a positive experience. The car's exterior design is very nice and the interior is comfortable, especially the driver side and console. Everything is well placed and the infotainment system is awesome. However, I did notice that the car lacked power and acceleration, which was disappointing. Additionally, the backseat space is limited if you have passengers. The gas mileage was also not great and the car consumed a lot of fuel. Despite these drawbacks, I still found the car to be nice looking and comfortable. However, due to my personal preferences, I decided to return the rental car early and opt for something else.

  5. Judd Metz 2024-05-17

I bought this SUV used in March 2018 with 21K miles and was immediately impressed by its stylish design and comfortable seats. Although I experienced some issues with the stability track sensor and battery, Chevy was able to fix them at no charge. I'm grateful that I purchased an extended warranty, which will cover me for the next 4 years or until the car hits 125K. I absolutely love the heated seats, leather steering wheel cover, cargo space, smooth ride, radio, satellite, and quiet engine. The only downside is the MPG, which maxes out at 22 on the highway. However, I've had no problems using E85 gas and it's cheaper than regular gas. Despite some issues, I plan to keep the car for a few more years. Recently, I learned that alternating fuels every other tank filling can help prevent fuel pump failure, which has been an issue for me in the past. Overall, I'm still happy with my purchase and look forward to enjoying my SUV for years to come.

Positive 2017 Chevrolet Equinox car reviews

  1. Mateo Goodwin 2025-01-09

I had a 2009. I recently got the 2017 and I love it. The only thing that I can complain about is the connection with my phone. When I plug it in, it automatically goes to music on my phone. That and making calls through the phone. When you try to use the phone and not the Bluetooth it will reconnect you back to the Bluetooth. Other than that, I love it!!!
