2011 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common 2011 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its engine, front suspension system, and steering column.
Firstly, the engine has been a significant source of trouble for many owners. A common issue is the engine emitting a clunking noise when driving along bumpy roads, which is caused by a problem with the front suspension system.
The front suspension system is another area where the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has had issues. The suspension system has been known to emit a creaking noise during low-speed maneuvers or when braking, which is caused by faulty front cradle bolts. This issue can make the car dangerous to drive, so it's essential to have it checked out as soon as possible.
The steering column is another problematic area, with several owners complaining that it is difficult to adjust. This issue is caused by a nut on the steering column adjustment lever tightening every time the column is adjusted, making it difficult to find the ideal driving position.
The liftgate has also been known to emit a rattling noise, which can be caused by a lack of contact between the liftgate and the side liftgate wedges or by the liftgate latch contacting the striker.
Lastly, the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has had issues with its warning lights, including the ABS, TCS, and A/C. These issues can be caused by a variety of problems, including faulty sensors or wiring.
In summary, the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has had several common problems related to its engine, front suspension system, and steering column. These issues can result in rapid oil depletion, sudden vehicle shutdowns, decreased visibility in inclement weather, and difficulty driving the car safely. It's essential to have these issues checked out by a professional as soon as possible to avoid further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-28
- VIN: 2CNFLEE58B6
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Joint on the front windshield wiper assembly failed. Was driving in a 4 lane highway doing about 70 mph while it was raining. Windshield wipers stopped halfway through the movement they sat for a moment they moved to as far as they could go towards the driver side and that’s where they stayed. The driver side one was over the edge of the vehicle. I followed tail lights turning onto a side road, pulled over safely. Moved the wipers to a down position, there was no resistance. Checked the fuse and that was fine. Waited a bit for the rain to settle a bit and drove to a safer location. Once off the highway and away from traffic when turning the windshield wipers on I could hear the motor still going so knew it was an issue with the arms. I had been on the road for about 2 hours all major highway with still over 2.5 hours left of my drive when they failed. We had to trailer it home as it was not safe to drive with the amount of rain we were getting. Replaced the motor and arm mechanism when we got it home and saw that it was one of the ball joints that broke. There were no warning lights, we have the old parts if needed for inspection, this looks to be the same issue as the recalled parts on the 2014-2015 equinox.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-29
- VIN: 2CNFLEECXB6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox 5 months ago from a dealership name The Automaxx group in Morrisville, PA. Two weeks after, the check engine light came on, I took it back to the dealership and it was in the shop for 3 days or more. I got it back and every week it was back in the shop for the last four months. I was very hesitant about driving it, but I need to get to my doctor appointments and then I park it. I had to constantly put oil in it and not knowing why or where the oil is going. It started smoking black thick smoke under the hood and cut off, then cut back on and I took it to the shop near my home, and let the mechanic diagnose the problem and he said the vehicle is not safe to drive at all, it's engine failure due to excessive oil consumption and that the vehicle could possibly catch on fire and that it's a defect with the engine from general Motors. I just would like to recoup the money back that I paid for the vehicle. I was totally unaware of the harm that I was in with this vehicle. I am not sure if the dealership was aware of the faulty engine or the dangerous vehicle that they sold, but thank God I wasn't hurt and that I don't have to inhale the smoke from that vehicle. The check engine light has been on for awhile and I was told that they weren't sure why it would not go off, that was a red flag for me. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance company.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: 2CNFLNEC1B6
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] Findlay Chevrolet Chevy has thousands of complaints regarding the 2.4L oil consumption. Thousands! The engine has 97,500 and consumes 2qts in 1,000miles. I requesting that GM helps fix the issue. A normal engine does not even consume 1qt in 3000miles, let alone 2qts in 1,000. It does not leak. The only problem is a GM defect possibly with piston rings which is documented with similar years. On top of this. They had an airbag recall for similar models and years. This vehicle they say, does not have a VIN on the recall. Yet, my “service airbag” error is on. It seems that GM does not care if someone has an airbag that may go off at 70mph. Not do they care about selling people engines that consume oil at a rate that will leave people stranded in the middle of nowhere. Or possibly starting on fire from getting too hot from not having oil in the engine. Thank you for your time INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: Just got a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox from a dealership that I trusted. Only had a few weeks and it just stalled on me while driving in traffic!!! Would not start back ! It was terrifying!!! Thank God it wasn’t rush hour! A nice man helped push it out of road into a parking lot! Now I find out there are safety issues and recalls that I was not aware of! Faulty oil piston rings caused it to jump time! They want over 7,000$ to fix but I do not have that kind of money!!!Its a death trap and shouldn’t have been allowed to re sale!!!
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-22
- VIN: 2CNFLNEC1B6
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: There is a SB-10058723-5799, that addresses airbags. I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox with 94k miles on it. The ‘service airbag’ error stays on the screen. I called Chevy to ask if I can bring vehicle in under SB 10058723-5799, and they told me my vehicle does not fall under this, AND they say the SB 10058723-5799 is expired. I asked they lady, so if the airbag deploys while I’m driving 65mph on the freeway, you’re not going to fix it under a recall that you say is expired. This makes absolutely no sense, and I believe it should fall under NHTSA’s special bulletin. Please help me. Thank you for your time.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-18
- VIN: 2GNALDEC6B1
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-03
- VIN: 2GNALBEC4B1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The vehicle started rocking during regular errands but displayed no error codes. Turned it off and left for a few minutes, when returned it would not start just the engine spinning. Had it towed to a local mechanic chain where they said it was likely a major issue and that there was no compression. They wouldn't be able to fix it so towed it to a dealer. Once the dealer had a look they determined the piston ring was blown/etc and the Equinox would need a whole new engine to get working again. The dealer also stated there was little to no oil in the system, and no light or warning of any sign had alerted. The vehicle had under 3000mi since the last oil change and only 69000mi in total use. Apparently there is TSB/warranty and major known issue in regards to oil consumption but not that I was made aware of before looking into since this issue. I have also been told that there are no active recalls on my vehicle and the VIN says everything that needed to be addressed has been.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-22
- VIN: 2CNALDEC6B6
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The vehicle’s engine had been stalling shortly after ignition and when idling. I had it in a repair shop three separate times and was told that it was a problem with the solenoids. The first two times, they were cleaned. They were replaced on the third. I was also told that the vehicle was using an excessive amount of oil, and to bring it in every 3000 miles for an oil change. On the date of the incident, I was traveling home. I took exit 363 off of I-70 onto US-287. While traveling down the off-ramp, the engine stalled. I was unable to brake properly. By the time the vehicle came to a complete stop, I was the middle of a busy crossroads. This particular area sees a lot of traffic, especially semitrailer trucks. When I was next able to get it into be looked at, I chose a different shop because the first had clearly missed something. It was this shop that told me my engine was ruined because it had been being driven without oil, despite not being at the 3000 mile mark yet. The vehicle has not been driven since, as I have not had the $7000 it would cost to replace the engine. Please, if there is any advice or help you can give me, I’d so appreciate words of wisdom. Thank you for your time.

Hello! In January 2011, we purchased a 2011 Equinox LT2. My wife really wanted leather heated seats, so we decided to go for the LT2 model. Luckily, the dealer found a vehicle that had the optional sunroof and power rear hatch, and it's painted black with a black interior. We've been driving it for a while now and have put more than 10,000 miles on it. We've only had one issue so far - it failed to start. But, we were able to jump start it and took it to the dealer where they fixed the problem. It turns out that it was a recall item and the dealer had to reprogram one of the onboard computers. This issue has been fixed on current production vehicles. Overall, we're really happy with our Equinox and would definitely recommend it to others!
-
I'm thrilled with my choice! I test drove several crossover vehicles, including Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Ford Escape, and Ford Edge, but none of them could match the Equinox's quality and smooth, quiet ride. I took my time shopping for two months, and I'm so glad I did. I absolutely love the mileage I'm getting and the great acceleration. It feels like I'm riding in a luxury car instead of an SUV. I get so many compliments on its exterior style and looks. I chose a silver metallic exterior with an all-black interior and 18-inch polished aluminum wheels.

We purchased the Equinox just over a week ago after trading in our 2006 model. I am thrilled with the upgrades from the older version! The SUV's interior and exterior have been updated and look fantastic. It rides smoothly and is fuel-efficient. I particularly enjoy the XM radio and OnStar system. We are excited to add another Equinox to our driveway! I cannot imagine buying anything else.

I purchased a 2011 Equinox a year ago and have had no problems with it. I opted for the 3.0L V-6 based on positive reviews, and it has not disappointed. The car has great pick up and a smooth ride. While the seats took some adjusting to get comfortable, my husband finds them uncomfortable. One downside is the venting system, which is oddly placed and blows air at my arm or face while driving. It's surprising that after all these years, this issue has not been resolved. Personally, I preferred the vent placement in my previous Trailblazer. However, the Equinox does feel more luxurious compared to the Trailblazer, which had a more truck-like feel.

I am absolutely loving my new Nox! I've only had it for 5 weeks and put about 1000 miles on it, but it has been wonderful during the winter months with all the snow we have had here in Iowa. This is my first time owning an AWD vehicle, and it definitely has a different feel to it than my previous FWD car. Despite the lower GPM, it has been worth it so far. I am particularly impressed with the quality of the interior - it really feels like a luxury car. My last vehicle was a Mazda CX7, and it was definitely lacking in quality compared to this one! Another feature that I love is the Bluetooth connectivity with my phone. I used to miss calls when I was driving because I had my radio too loud, but now it just cuts out the radio when it rings and I don't have to dig for my phone in my purse!

Hi there! I have a 2011 Chevy Equinox and I've been experiencing some trouble with the air bag light. I took it to a local mechanic who unfortunately couldn't help, so I decided to bring it to Chevy. They gave me a quote for over $600.00 which was a bit steep. I did some research and found that many others have had the same issue. I'm a bit concerned about the safety of my family, and I'm wondering if this is a recall issue. When I asked the staff at Chevy, they didn't seem to have an answer for me. I'm hoping that Chevy will take responsibility for this issue before it becomes a bigger problem. Thanks, Barry McClorey

We purchased the car used with a little over 100K miles on it. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the car shortly after leaving the dealership. The car began idling roughly when stopped, hesitated when accelerating, and an engine light came on (P0420). Additionally, the car shakes very hard when the engine is on and continues to run for a few seconds after the key is removed. When accelerating from a stop or coasting, the car jerks forward like the gas pedal was stomped on. Sometimes, the car takes a few seconds to move when trying to accelerate. The car also only gets about 22 mpg highway/city combined. We took the car back to the dealership within a week of purchasing it, and they replaced the spark plugs and sent us on our way. However, the engine light returned (P0420 and P0303). We took the car back to the dealership, and they replaced the 3rd coil pack. Unfortunately, the engine light returned again, and the dealership said it was some kind of seal and that it was It seems that the car we purchased had a known issue, which was also a manufacturer defect. Unfortunately, GM has decided that they cannot cover the cost of repair due to the car having over 100K miles. We were not made aware of this before taking it to the dealership. They suggested that we replace the catalytic converter and O2 sensor, which would cost around $1500. After having this done, we took the car back to the dealership, but they were unable to fix the issues themselves and had to send it to another repair shop. Unfortunately, the issues returned not even a week after the repairs were made. We have tried to trade the car in, but due to its poor performance and sound, we have been unable to get anywhere near what we paid for it. We are hoping that the car will not break down before we can pay down the balance enough to trade it without losing thousands. We would advise others to stay away from GM cars. This has been the worst car buying experience we have ever had. Our 13-year-old Honda with almost 200K miles runs better than this 4-year-old car. We seriously regret spending money on this car.

1) I noticed that the placement of the air conditioner vents on the dash could be improved. As the driver, I found that both vents are positioned in a way that only hits my hands and the back of the steering wheel. If the vents were closer to the middle of the dash, and the little storage compartment was left out, the a/c would be more effective. This would help to avoid the issue of your face getting hot and your hands getting cold. 2) In my experience, I have found that the car does not achieve the advertised 32 MPH. Over the past two years, even on long trips, the best mileage I have ever gotten was 23.5. It would be more realistic for the advertised mileage to be adjusted accordingly.

Although I love the look and handling of my Equinox, I experienced some issues with the on-star/Bluetooth module and the transmission. However, the dealer was able to replace the transmission with a new one. While I was not very happy with the situation, I am confident that the Equinox is a quality car. Although I have some concerns about its dependability, I would still consider buying it again.

I've only ever driven Honda's and made the leap of trying a 2011 Chevy Equinox. Unfortunately, after purchasing a used Chevy with 67k miles on it, the A/C went bad just 5k miles later. The air condenser was leaking and Chevy quoted over $800 for a repair. In all my years of driving a Honda, I've never once had an A/C break, even after driving them well over 175k miles. It's disappointing to have such an unreliable experience with an American car. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone.
