2010 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common 2010 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox 2010 is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine and oil consumption. Here are the details on these issues based on complaints from owners:
- Oil Consumption: The 2010 Equinox's four-cylinder engine tends to consume oil much faster than less powerful options on the market. Equinox models were designed to consume under a quart of oil for every 2,000 miles driven, but some owners have reported burning up multiple quarts of oil monthly. Faulty valve seals result in the SUV guzzling more oil than necessary, so replacing the main seals when leaks originate here is recommended.
- Check Engine Light: False alarms from the Check Engine Light are common in the 2010 Equinox, especially in early third-generation models. When this issue occurs, the instrument cluster shows a check engine light when nothing is wrong. The P25A9 OBD-II code is often associated with this problem, signifying an issue with engine internals. Replacing the stock engine control unit (ECU) is a quick and inexpensive fix for this issue.
- Air Conditioning Compressor: Second-generation Equinox models, including the 2010 model, can experience problems with the A/C compressor. Key warning signs include vents blowing warm air and freon leaks, with puddles forming underneath the SUV. Replacing the A/C compressor is a viable solution when this issue arises.
- Battery Issues: Battery drainage is a common problem in the 2010 Equinox, especially in second-generation vehicles. The 2015 models are known for their stock batteries that can leave you stuck in cold weather. A new battery is recommended when something seems off to avoid being stranded.
These common problems with the Chevrolet Equinox 2010 should be considered when purchasing a used vehicle. Regular maintenance, such as using premium synthetic engine oil, checking the oil level regularly, and doing more frequent oil changes, may help avoid some of the engine problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-13
- VIN: 2CNALPEWXA6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Purchased a 2010 Chevy Equinox from this Chevy dealer in the Pinehurst NC area in December 2022. Heard knocking noise start mid-March 2023. Vehicle seemed to go into "limp" mode and lost power (dangerous situation had vehicle been on interstate with no shoulder or exit ramp or could have been rear-ended due to sudden lack of power). No check engine light on at any time or when vehicle was taken to another Chevy dealer (March 20, 2023). Initially, Chevy dealer stated there were no issues. Insisted that the vehicle be checked again. Dealer took vehicle on test drive and then put on lift. Chevy dealer then stated oil loss issues and need to replace timing chains, actuators, gaskets, pistons, piston rings, oil coolant, water pump, balance chain, and other related parts. This is a design flaw in engine and piston rings causing excessive oil consumption which then leads to failure of other components. Was advised to change oil every 3,500 miles as opposed to going by the "oil" light and advised only to drive the vehicle sparingly and only if absolutely needed to drive.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I took the Chevy Equinox to the Chevy dealership to have the oil changed. The House Technician said it was unsafe to put it on a lift. The entire frame was corroded. On 02/28/2023, I had the dealership do a Multi-Point Vehicle Inspection. This is their findings: #1-1010: INSPECTIONS INSPECT/CHECK inspect due to customer request Inspected unit due to customers request found excessive rear under body rust and left rear upper control arm is held on by two bolts, but structure is unstable due to corrosion. The rear drive shaft has been removed for unknown reasons. This assessment is visual and at this time. Unit looks unsafe and unstable to drive due to rear under vehicle rust. l would recommend to park the unit and get alternative transportation and replacing the vehicle due to rust. Customer has been advised of our findings. I called GM and reported the problem. They couldn't do a buyback on the Equinox. I filed a complaint with BBB AUTO-LINE, they closed the case said the vehicle was to old. GM said the Equinox came from up north, and since I live in Arkansas the climate change made the vehicles frame rust rapidly due to the moisture. The emergency brake cable, and control arm is rusted into. The vehicle went from excellent condition to unsafe to drive in one day. Their was no visibility of rust in December2022.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-05
- VIN: 2CNALBEW9A6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Engine cylinders & seals are faulty and easily crack causing the car to STOP /STALL WHILE IN DRIVE! I NEARLY HIT A SEMI-TRUCK BECAUSE THE CAR STOPED MID DRIVE AND THE CAR JERKED SO HARD THAT THE WHEEL JERKED TO THE SIDE AND THEN LOCKED!! AS THE CAR CONTINUED TO GLIDE IN A CIRCLE BECAUSE IT DIDNT STOP ALL THE WAY I COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL TO AVOID THE SEMI, WHAT SAVED MY LIFE WAS THE CLEAR ROAD THAT ALLOWED THE SEMI TO GO AROUND ME!! MY CAR LITERALLY SAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET ACROSS THE YELLOW LINE! This issue persists and corrupts the ENTIRE fuel system, catalytic conveyer, resonator, and timing chain SIMULTANEOUSLY! This causes each owner to replace the entire engine because it simply can not be fixed. Fixing or repairing one of the components does NOT fix the issue or stop the engine from failing, all must be replaced! Even after replacing it all THE SAME THING HAPPENS TO THE NEW ENGINE! This is a engine malfunction. The entire car/engine/blueprint should be destroyed and recalled!!! Even the mechanics and dealers are asking why these vehicles still exist and saying that the engine for this car is junk and it’s so common for this to happen to the point that there are NO USED ENGINES FOR UNDER $2500!!! Majority of the mechanics are even REFUSING to repair/replace the engine in this car because it’s a waste of time & money because the next engine NEW OR USED will do the same EXACT thing!! NO ONE IS GOING TO PAY $10,000+ for a NEW ENGINE or even $2500+ for a USED ENGINE PLUS $2000+ FOR LABOR ONLY FOR THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM TO HAPPEN AFTER SPENDING $5000 - $12000+

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-25
- VIN: 2CNFLCEW0A6
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Vehicle burns oil at a high rate due to an engine piston ring problem. If not checked on a weekly basis you will get low oil pressure throwing the car into limp mode decreasing engine power immediately. I know people that had this problem addressed by GM free of charge as a recall. I want to know if my vehicle qualifies for this recall.Currently this vehicle requires 1 quart of oil weekly in order to keep oil level full. If I am driving the vehicle and this would happen again it might not cause an accident but currently my wife and daughter use the car and they might not be able to handle the situation if it would occur. Thank you

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Equinox. I've driven it for 40,000 miles and I'm really happy with the gas mileage and all the features like the Bluetooth, radio controls, and seats. Of course, it's an SUV, not a sports car, but I'm still satisfied with the ride. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the dealer three times now for a major transmission issue. Luckily, it's still under the drivetrain warranty and we get a free rental. The service department has been really nice, but it was definitely stressful to have the car break down during rush hour traffic in the left lane of the highway. I'm not sure how common transmission problems are with this car, but it seems like we may have gotten a lemon. I'm going to ask if they can replace the whole transmission. Thanks for listening!
-
I was shopping for a new small SUV and visited a Toyota/Chevy dealer. I went in search of a Rav 4 and had not even considered the Equinox or any Chevy for that matter. The salesman suggested I take a look at the Equinox and keep an open mind. I am so glad he showed me this car. It far exceeded my expectations and outperformed both the CR-V and Rav-4.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you've had the 2010 Equinox LTZ since 7/20/2010 and your prior vehicle was a Silverado 2500HD. It looks great and the engine has adequate power. It must be fun to drive! However, I understand that the driver's seat is deeper than your previous vehicle, which may not be comfortable for a shorter person like yourself. Additionally, the console armrest is positioned too far back for us short people to comfortably use it. Lastly, the headrest tilts slightly forward, which can be uncomfortable for those with ponytails. I agree that the door locks being in the middle with the radio controls is not the best design choice. Overall, thank you for sharing your experience with the Equinox LTZ. I hope you have a great day!

I purchased my Equinox back in November 2009 and I must say, I'm still absolutely in love with this SUV! It's incredibly comfortable, reliable, and roomy. Despite being a 4-cylinder, it has plenty of 'get up and go'. I was initially a little concerned about owning a 4-cylinder, but those worries have been completely put to rest. I'm currently getting around 26 mpg in the city, which means I only need to fill up every 3 weeks since I mainly do city driving. On the highway, I'm getting about 28 mpg, which is slightly lower than the expected 32, but still fantastic for an SUV. Trust me, you won't be disappointed with this purchase. I've never loved an automobile as much as I love my Equinox!
-
I love my Equinox! The total driving experience, build quality, and fit and finish on the vehicle were great. I get so many compliments on my Equinox, and one person even mistook it for a Mercedes-Benz! When I told them it was a Chevrolet Equinox, they were impressed. I can truly say that I won with this car!

This Chevy has a new transmission and engine with under 55000 miles. It is a reliable vehicle that you can count on.

I have been a loyal customer of General Motors for the past 45 years, owning Buick, Saturn, and Chevrolet automobiles. My 1998 Saturn SL2 has over 170,000 miles recorded and has served me well. Six years ago, I decided to purchase a new 2010 Chevrolet Equinox with a 2.4 cylinder engine and front-wheel drive. My plan was to maintain this vehicle as required and drive it for at least 6 to 10 years. As someone with a background in aviation aircraft maintenance, I understand the importance of following the manufacturer's maintenance requirements and how to remedy malfunctions. During my routine weekly maintenance check, I noticed that the engine was consuming 1/4 quart of oil every 6 or 7 hundred miles, which started at 35,000 miles of engine operation. I brought this up with the dealer during my next oil change and asked if they could use a different type of oil due to my concerns. The Chevrolet Maintenance Manager informed me that 1 quart of oil consumption for 1000 miles is normal for this type of 2.4 cylinder engine. I was surprised and concerned that this was not mentioned during the new purchase discussions or in any of the new car customer maintenance booklets and advertisements. I believe that the manufacturer should inform the customer before purchasing a brand new vehicle if the engine is designed to consume 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles at approximately 35,000 miles. My vehicle's oil consumption increased to over 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles, so the dealer agreed to an engine change at 51,000 miles. However, I was still confused because the Chevrolet Service Manager stated that one quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal, but over 1 quart of oil every 1000 requires an engine change. After driving the vehicle for an additional 35,000 miles with a replacement engine, I encountered an issue where the engine started to consume oil at a rate of 1 quart every 1000 miles. Unfortunately, the 5 year warranty had expired by 1 month, and I was informed that a replacement engine would cost me $5500.00 dollars. Despite my concerns, General Motors and the Chevrolet Division did not seem to understand my problem with the engine, and I was continually handed off to different departments and people who were not very polite or helpful. After several hours of investigation, it appeared that the oil consumption was due to scored piston liners. Feeling worn out and tired of battling the General Motors giant, I decided to trade the vehicle for a new Toyota. I am now back on the road with total confidence in the performance of my Toyota. Although I am disappointed that an American Icon like Chevy has lost its respect to the very people who helped bail them out of bankruptcy, I believe that a simple acknowledgement of their mistake and a willingness to fix it would go a long way. While I will not be purchasing another General Motors (GM) vehicle, I wish them all the best.

I had only had the vehicle for two days when the engine light came on. I took it to the dealer and they informed me that the required part was non-existent and not in the system. They said it would have to be taken off the assembly line at the Cami plant in Ingersoll. The part finally arrived three days later, but unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. GM Engineering instructed the dealer to start checking the electrical grounding system for potential issues. I contacted GM customer care in Oshawa, but because it is a leased fleet car, the representative was unable to address my concerns. She suggested that I have the company call and complain. Although I expressed my dissatisfaction and mentioned that I would write a review online, she wished me good luck. I am disappointed with GM and will not be using their services again. JR.

I had the engine repaired by the dealership at 80000 miles in 2017, and GM covered the $4000 cost. Unfortunately, I experienced a misdiagnosis in early November 2018, which cost me $1600. Later that same month, I had to replace the transmission, which set me back $3000, but it would have cost $4500 at the dealership. More recently, I had to replace the throttle and gasket for $500. With 135000 miles on it, the engine has always been a bit weak. While my father's 2018 Equinox drives smoothly like a car, it still feels like you're in a car. Therefore, I would not recommend buying an Equinox or any GM car with a Stablix track, as it comes loose every year and sets off alarms all over my dashboard.

I drove all the way to White Plaines, NY to get the Equinox LTZ in Blue that I wanted. It's a 4 cyl (plenty of power), 2WD for maximum mileage. During a 4,000 mile trip from WI to FL, I averaged 32.2 mpg. This SUV is smooth, reliable, roomy, quiet, efficient, and fun to drive. I've owned over 35 vehicles, including Corvette, Lexus, and Toyota, and I must say that I love this one. In fact, I stole it from my wife this morning just to get the chance to drive it. Although there was a noisy tick in the engine that was audible when outside of the vehicle, GM did the $3,000 repair for NC and provided a rental. I have 49K miles on it now and it runs quiet as a mouse. It's a great car with great service and great value. However, I had some issues with the engine at 60k miles, which required two rebuilds. It became an oil burner and the mileage dropped to 12mpg. I traded it for a Chevy Trax, which turned out to be another GM disaster. The car died and had to be towed 19 times, which was a nightmare. Finally, after 5 months of pain and only 5600 miles, I convinced GM to buy back the 2015 Chevy Trax under the lemon law. I have to say that I will never buy a GM product again.
