2013 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

That’s where the car was assessed at and we found out at that time what the issues was. I then found out this exact issue was on recall for another vin numbers. I call the manufacturer to make them aware of what had taken place with this particular vehicle and was told it wasn’t part of the recall. I then asked even though I have proof that it is the same issues. I was just given a claim number for the call and nothing else happened. So if this happened to our car and thankfully my husband was driving and not my daughter that day it could have been a different situation and she would have not knew how to get it off to the side of the highway while waiting for a tow truck. There was no warning until that day because we were keeping up with our car maintenance.

The dealership can not duplicate the issue as this happens randomly, mainly when there is a lot of rain/wetness. I have been dealing with this for exactly 10 years now, January 2014-2024. I have all service papers from taking it in and not once did they offer to check other areas to see if something else could be causing this issue. I took it again, after contacting Chevrolet, for the umpteenth time, and paid for diagnostics. The dealership now says it supposedly is the atenna, that water is getting in and causing the issue.

- Consequence: Inoperative windshield wipers may reduce the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."
- Consequence: If the key is removed without the transmission in PARK, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick 1-800-521-7300, and GMC 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 50490 and 50491.

I went to the dealership wanting a Traverse and left with this car instead. I absolutely love my new car and I'm excited about the savings on gas mileage. It's great to hear that you find this car easy to drive in any conditions and very comfortable for an average size person. It's impressive that you've put on 39,000 miles since purchasing it from a HERTZ Resale lot with 24,000 miles on it. It's also good to know that you've been keeping up with regular maintenance, changing the oil every 5K and putting new tires on it at 50K. I really like the spaciousness of the room in the backseat and cargo area, and the gas mileage is pretty good too, averaging at 26.1 gallons/mile. Although, I have had some issues with the car that have been quite frustrating. The cab is quite loud and you can hear everything outside, the blower fan is also very loud, and in the first year, I had to get the entire hatch door repainted due to over 40 rust spots. Additionally, the two driver's side doors are rusting out, which started in year 3 and unfortunately, GM does not cover it until they rust the entire way through. However, I have had good luck with FWD in the past, but for this size, I would recommend going with AWD. Overall, while I wouldn't buy this car again due to the annoying issues with noise and rust, I have managed to get 76000 miles out of it and have only needed to replace the brakes and rotors now. How would you like your car to stall due to engine problems near a railway crossing with your kids in!!! I bought my first ever Chevy Equinox LS some years back. It ran well without any major problems (other than a windshield wiper module issue, which turned out to be a recall item). It has just over 70k miles on it. A couple of days ago, while I was driving, the engine stalled and the car came to a complete halt near a railway crossing. The car vibrated violently, stopped and would not start again. The dashboard monitor gave 2 errors before stopping. The errors read Stabilitrack error and Engine power reduced. I have researched online and seen this problem occurring to other customers as well, despite having regular oil changes. I have taken this to a dealer service shop in Langhorne, PA 19047. They have had the car for about 6 days now and still no ETA. Unfortunately, they have refused me a loaner vehicle. I have made several calls to the service shops now and they are still not covering this under warranty. The vehicle is supposed to have a powertrain warranty for 100k miles. They told me that it is a valve problem and then asked me to get all the oil change records. When I bought this... they are now asking me to authorize an expenditure of $700 to tear the engine apart. The next time I ever buy a Chevy will be over my dead body!!!

You have a good car overall, but there are a couple of things that could be improved. Firstly, the front seat construction could be better. The plastic side piece comes up too high on the cushion, which can be uncomfortable when getting out of the car. Secondly, the vibrating rear view mirror is a concern. Despite having it replaced, the issue persists and we found the same problem in other new cars on the lot. It seems to be a design flaw. This can be a bit distracting and makes it difficult to check the rear view as often as you would like.

I have owned this car for six months and unfortunately experienced a few issues. The timing chain and rear main seal both failed, causing oil leakage. Despite GM's acknowledgement of these problems, they have not offered any assistance. Recently, I had to replace the motor and now the car is refusing to start. The dealership has informed me that the ECM has gone. As a result of these experiences, I have decided that this will be my last GM vehicle. At this moment, I would prefer to have a 2002 Kia with 200,000 miles on it.
