2020 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common 2020 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to powertrain, transmission, engine, and electrical issues.
Powertrain and Transmission Issues:
- Forward gears may disengage, preventing the vehicle from moving forward, causing potential safety hazards, especially with young passengers on board.
- Engine response may be severely impacted when yielding, leading to potential accidents when merging onto roads.
- Certain 2020 Chevrolet Equinoxes have had to be recalled due to issues with the rear brake calipers' lubricant, which can lead to the brakes dragging and overheating, reducing their effectiveness.
Engine Problems:
- Engine hesitation, idling, and stalling have been reported, with the check engine light turning on, posing safety concerns in dark areas.
- Some engines may have seized vacuum pumps, causing severe damage to the engine and requiring replacement.
- Engine response may be affected, with no throttle response for 30 feet when yielding, increasing the risk of accidents.
Electrical Problems:
- The OnStar module may be manipulated and used while the car is parked and off, with the radio station changing to an Asian language, camera being manipulated, and apps being installed and utilized by other users through the dashboard.
- The radio may freeze and not shut off after turning the vehicle off, or the power lane assist may malfunction, displaying messages warning the driver of lane departure and causing the steering wheel to vibrate.
- Water intrusion in the right-side tail lamp may be related to battery and tail lamp failures, as reported by some owners.
While these issues are concerning, it is important to note that the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is still a relatively new vehicle, and more time is needed to make definitive statements about its reliability. However, the reported problems suggest potential areas of concern for owners and prospective buyers.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
- VIN: 2GNAXUEV7L6
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The Fuel module and fuel pump stalled my car out on a highway causing me to have to quickly roll off the road to not get hit by cars behind me going 60 mph. This car is just at 80000 and the fuel module and pump should not have gone out yet. This seems to be such a problem no one can find the part because it is on back order everywhere, I have been without a vehicle since Sept 19th...and am fixing to go through my second hurricane here in florida with no transportation. I'm trilled with this issue.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV9LS

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
- VIN: 3GNAXHEV1LS
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving my car approaching a four way intersection, to realize my brake pedal was not pressing down to the floor. This was 9/28/24. I have a 2020 Chevy Equinox. I put my car in the shop to only find out that vacuum pump has exploded and left metal inside the engine. Done some research with the repair shop and to my surprise, GM has had a lot of recalls with vehicles having this issue. Who ever the CEO is, I pray that you understand how deadly and serious this issue is. This could have ended badly for me and could have been tragic for my family. I can not afford to get the metal out of my engine. And to replace the vacuum pump alone was $700. In order for them to clean the engine would cost me an extra $1000. That's ridiculous for a car that I have only had almost 4 years and with maybe 10,000 miles when I purchased it. My voice will be heard. And I will keep advocating for people who are going through this! Our lives matter. This is very common in vehicles with 1.5 liter engines. I'm going to keep researching and hopefully GM will compensate me for this and the engine work.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-29
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV4LS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: We were driving on the highway and just exited. My husband hit the brakes and the pedal was hard to push. He basically had to put all his weight on the pedal in order to slow down. Once we were able to stop completely, we got the 2020 Chevy Equinox looked at and we were told that the vacuum pump that is attached the the cam shift exploded and pieces were in the engine. This has caused approx. $3000 in damage that me and my husband can't afford. The vehicle is still at Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine. We are going to have to tow it back to my brothers until we can afford the payment to fix it.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-30
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV4LS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while exiting the highway at 50 MPH, the brake pedal had hardened and the contact could not depress the brake pedal. Several brake warning messages appeared on the instrument panel. The contact shifted the vehicle into neutral(N) and pulled into a parking lot to allow the vehicle to coast to a stop. Once the vehicle slowed to a complete stop, the contact shut off the vehicle. The vehicle failed to restart after multiple attempts. The contact called a relative to the scene who used a code reader to determine the cause of the failure. The code reader showed that there was a defect with the vehicle's vacuum pump, brake sensor, and intake camshaft position timing. The vehicle's codes were reset and the vehicle restarted; however, the brake failure persisted. Due to the failure, the vehicle was initially towed to the relative's home and eventually to the dealer. The dealer performed a diagnostic where they discovered metal shavings in the engine camshaft which damaged several parts of the engine. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

After that the car wouldn't start at all. This problem could've been a lot worse if it would've happened while I was on the freeway. My vehicle turned off without any warnings any vehicle would've slammed in to me at high speed if it would've shut down a minute prior to me exiting. I didn't get any warnings/ lights nothing it just turned off on me in the middle of the road. I had to get it towed to Autonation where they detected the Fuel Module was the problem. - VIN: 2GNAXTEV2L6
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: When pressing the gas pedal, my Equinox does not accelerate and move forward. It takes approximately 2-3 seconds for the vehicle to react to the pressing of the pedal and that reaction is slow despite applying full pedal movement. This happens intermittently and appears to be most notable during extreme high temperatures. It also has been noticed while trying to accelerate to pass in addition to trying to go from a stop. I was almost hit by another vehicle because my Equinox didn't go. When it did go, it took roughly another 5-7 seconds to get up to the 45 MPH speed limit.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-04
- VIN: 2GNAXHEV4L6
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Power Train: I purchased a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox LS in January 2023. For the past 4 to 7 months the vehicle has completely lost power in traffic several times and I'm not talking about AutoStop and Start, the battery life was great, with no dead cells at all. The vehicle went dead, absolutely no power source inside or outside the Equinox, the SUV could not be placed in neutral to move it out of traffic, nor would the remote key work. The Equinox remained in this mode for approximately 20 minutes. During each incident, the vehicle displayed no warning signs or check engine symbol on the dashboard display before or after each episode. Fuel/Propulsion System: Upon placing unleaded fuel in the vehicle and starting up the ignition, the SUV would start vibrating, sputtering, jerking, and popping sounds. Also, while driving the vehicle upon acceleration at times it seems as if fuel isn't reaching the engine. Brakes: Service Brake Assist may illuminate randomly on the dashboard while on the interstate. These issues has placed and caused my family and I to be in great danger. This is my primary vehicle and I purchased this vehicle because I believed in the reliability of the GM Chevrolet Brand. Not an accident waiting to happen. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected, but please remember if NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is illuminating on the dashboard the issues can not be assessed properly!
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: 3GNAXGEV6LS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: When first breaking on the exit ramp after a 2 hour ride on highway the rear breaks made a loud grinding sound & took longer to stop with 2 cars in front of mine. I put flashers on & pulled as far to side of road incase I was unable to stop at the bottom of the exit (down hill) to avoid collision with the 2 cars in front of me. Previously my vehicle shown no signs of any issues. There were no sounds coming from breaks, no issues slowing down or stopping, & no lights on dashboard to indicate an issue of any kind. I looked my Chevy Equinox up and saw that there was an isdue with the rear calipers and many had been reported and recalled. My VIN doesn't show my calipers have been recalled. However, the GM site states if there is an issue with the rear breaks/ calipers to report it and Chevy will repair the issue. Many Chevy Equinox owners have taken to the internet to report the same issue, there are also reports that only 166 were recalled. This is clearly a manufacturing error and not normal wear & tear. I bought my 2020 Equinox brand new in 2021, it was unsold in 2020. Please help myself & the other Chevy Equinox owners make Chevy take responsibility & fix this error before people are injured or killed because our breaks give out unexpectedly.

- Summary: While driving down the road, my car completely stopped in the middle of traffic. It would not move, and I was stuck in the middle of the road. This is a safely issue because it could have caused a multiple vehicle pileup as my car came to a sudden halt and I was unable to move in the middle of traffic. The vehicle was towed to a Chevrolet dealership. It was determined by Chevrolet that the fuel pump module was not sending the proper signal to the fuel pump. The fuel pump module was replaced. - Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The same part that is causing a recall for 2021-22 models just went out on my 2020. Why aren't the 2020's recalled? This is causing it to be hard to get the part. It's the fuel pump control module. 2020's need to be included in this recall. My car is only 4 years old, and is just past the warranty (47k miles). I should not be having such trouble with it.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-26
- VIN: 3GNAXHEVXLS
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I was operating the vehicle when it suddenly shut off in traffic. I attempted to restart the vehicle and received a "reduced engine power" and "Service brake assist" message. The vehicle had a clunky noise and failed to restart. Upon inspection at the dealership, I was told that the vacuum pump inside the engine had exploded and sent metal components throughout the engine system. No previous issues or warnings were present prior to this failure. This is a safety issue as the vehicle gave no warning signs of issue and shut off in the flow of traffic with very little ability to brake or steer out of the way.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-23
- VIN: 3GNAXUEV2LL
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The sunroof drains on my vehicle keep getting clogged with debris even though I don't open the sunroof. I have had to get the drains blown out every 1 to 2 months when I find water in the rear cargo area. Attached are invoices from the dealership showing the work done and how often. An Engineer from GM has determined on April 10th that if these drains are frequently clogged, then it is a "Vehicle Concern". GM says that this is a maintenance issue. However, THEY have been doing this "maintenance" ever 1 to 2 months and the drains keep getting blocked. This can't be right! I don't want mold to grow in my car. A prior Equinox that I owned was "totaled" by my insurance company because water leaked into that car and mold grew in the interior.

Negative 2020 Chevrolet Equinox car reviews
Positive 2020 Chevrolet Equinox car reviews
-
This is our second time purchasing an Equinox. Previously, we owned a 2015 LS, but due to an accident, we found ourselves in the market once again. We were very satisfied with our first Equinox, so it was our first choice. We did look at similar models such as the CR-V, Forester, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a couple of others, but the Jeep was out of our price range. Although the other cars offered something different, we felt that they were basically the same. The deciding factor for us was the reliability of all the reviews we read. The Equinox received a 5 out of 5 on reliability, which was very important to my wife and me.
-
This car has a better ride than the Escape, more comfort than the Rouge, and better style than the Jeep. It also has a nice fit and finish.
-
You'll love the smooth ride, great fuel economy, and stunning styling!
-
This is our 4th Equinox. The 2020 model is slightly smaller than the 2017 we traded in, but it's still roomy and comfortable. We really appreciate the convenience options like memory seats, as well as the safety features such as lane departure and forward collision warning. The 1.5L engine has plenty of power for daily use, and we're getting over 27 mpg in local driving, which is about 4 mpg better than our 2017. Overall, we would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone.
-
I've been driving my Premier, 2.0L Equinox for 11 months now and I still absolutely love it! I chose the Premier model because it came with features that the other models didn't offer as standard. The ride is incredibly smooth and the pick up is great. Compared to my previous Buick Enclave with a V6, the Equinox has just as much pick up but is much more enjoyable to drive. It has the sporty feel of a car but with the comfort of an SUV. The Bose sound system, Apple Car Play, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and ventilated seats are all fantastic features that I love. I must admit, the cooling seats were the main reason I went for the Premier - they're a lifesaver in the Texas heat! I tend to keep my vehicles for a long time, so I'm hoping this one holds up as well as my 2001 Trailblazer and 2011 Enclave did.

The clock seems to be an afterthought, despite being one of the most frequently referenced and important features. If you don't have perfect vision, reading the clock can take your attention off the road for a few seconds longer than necessary. Another issue is the location of the turn signal indicator, which is not clearly visible. It is not on the side mirror, but rather down low on the side of the headlight. I have had cars turn into me because they did not notice the low signal indicator. Additionally, when using Apple CarPlay for navigation, it freezes up 60% of the time if you receive a phone call. This can be frightening because you are following directions, and resetting it can take far too long. However, disconnecting and reconnecting your cell phone and setting up directions again usually solves the issue.

On the very first day I filled up the gas tank, the car started sputtering and eventually died. I took it back to the dealer, but they couldn't replicate the issue. The next time I filled up and tried to get on the interstate, the car sputtered again and almost caused an accident. After multiple visits to the dealer, they had to keep it for a month to fix the issue. Although it was frustrating, they eventually replaced the fuel tank, purge valve, and canister, and the car worked fine. However, I did experience some issues with the fuses for the smart entertainment center blowing in the console, which was a bit of a hassle. Overall, my experience with this car has been challenging, especially since it was my first brand new car. I hope Chevrolet can improve their quality control in the future. If you're considering an Equinox, I would recommend exploring other options. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The particular 2020 Equinox I am finance purchasing is not meeting up to my expectations. It sways during high speed on the highways. The gas mileage sucks. Air and water leaks through top of driver side window. I drove off the lot with it on January 16, 2024, and it is has been in service repair shop for two weeks now, today's date is February 12, 2024. This is causing a major disruption in my life's plans. I am so disappointed. I also feel a though I have taken advantage of based on my identity.

Although the vehicle has a lot of adjustments, the narrow seats and design make it uncomfortable to drive for extended periods of time. However, the vehicle drives nicely and is only slightly underpowered at stoplights. In comparison to other vehicles, such as the GMC Terrain, this one may not be as comfortable for both the driver and passenger. Additionally, I am curious about how to turn off the back seat warning. Overall, the vehicle has its drawbacks but still performs well in certain areas.

You might be better off with a smaller 1.5 engine and front-wheel drive, like the Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4, for a smoother ride and better gas mileage.
