2016 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Minimal driving throughout summer as both drivers are teachers and home most of the summer. Vehicle engine light illuminated on 9/12/24 with no prior issues or lights illuminating. Vehicle then went into what felt like "limp mode." Vehicle was taken to certified Chevy dealership service center. Initial diagnosis indicated there was little to no oil left in the engine. No visible leaks were seen on driveway where it has been parked, no smell of burning oil occurred prior to engine light illuminating. Oil life monitor stated 65.89% remaining. Visible leak diagnosis passed inspection. Diagnosis of misfire/engine related concerns. While on phone with mechanic it was stated that pistons and rings were malfunctioning. Upon researching issues, I discovered that there is a well known issues within GM of this exact problem existing in which around roughly 90,000 miles (my vehicle is currently at 91,000+) this specific engine starts consuming oil at a massive rate without indicating any leaks or smells of burning oil. Service center quoted between $6500-$10000 to repair. After I provided feedback about what I had discovered, I was told by mechanic that this is a well known problem with this vehicle. Extended warranties for this issue has been issued however, I am being asked to cover the cost to repair a known problem within the 2011-2017 GM engines in the Equinox and Terrain models.

In the early years of purchasing this vehicle everything was working smooth. After the first 3-4 years I remember the mechanics asking if I had done my oil changes, and the answer was yes every time. Now that I started to look further into the issue Im finding out that this exact engine burns through oil way too fast and has cause issue like engine going out. This is a big issue for others on the street and myself, thankfully I was not on the highway at the time when the vehicle shut down on me but I am constatnly utilizing the highway to get around town. This can easily cause an incident in any road/highway if the vehicle had shut off at the wrong time and wrong place. The vehicle has not been inspected for the reasons I'm stating here, but have been noticed by mechanics when doing maintenance. I did not think much of it because I am not a mechanic and I just thought that was the normal for a vehicle to do over time. Now I'm getting quotes to replace the engine plus labor can run anywhere from 6-8 thousand dollars. There was not any warning lights or anything in regards to the engine earlier on, this happened a few days ago and shortly after my vehicle gave out. The engine light never flashed either, it would just stay illuminated, and from my understanding that's a warning to take it to a mechanic shop for further inspection. The amber engine light that im aware of is to not move the vehicle and get somewhere safe.

Shortly after, a warning light indicated low oil pressure, and the engine shut off before I could safely pull over. Since then, the vehicle has been sitting in my driveway. Recently, I had it checked by a dealership, where the mechanics diagnosed a blown rear main seal and significant oil leakage. The dealership confirmed that the rear main seal failure was caused by a faulty PCV valve, a known issue in these models, which resulted in excessive pressure buildup and engine damage. Given the severity of the issue, the dealership mentioned that an engine replacement might be necessary. If it’s just the rear main seal that needs replacing, the estimated cost is $2,700. The vehicle was purchased used with 55,000 miles on it and had only one previous owner.

There is a service bulletin (14882) that dealers are aware of concerning this issue, for an extended warranty of 120,000 or 10 years, no charge to customers to repair. This is a well maintained vehicle with only 83,000 miles and should not be consuming this much oil. A quick search shows this is a common problem with this model and year, but not recall has yet been issued

There is not a screw to hold it in place on it anywhere. He said the plastic ball just wears down and arm mechanism just falls off. This could have cost me my life! - Summary: This vehicle has a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor and/or an issue with the engine temperature gauge. The main issue is that the design of the 2.4 ecotec engine is defective in the opinion of many mechanics and equinox/terrain owners. The engine burns off more oil than is considered safe. I was advised not to run the oil consumption test by the DEALERSHIP. My experience is, I heard a sound in the engine and upon checking the oil, discovered NO OIL present!!! I had over 1000 miles left on my oil service sticker. There was no indication other than my own observation of a sound. No temperature change, the temperature gauge should have been reading hot, but was at normal. No oil light... like literally no oil sensor light present on the console. This was pretty upsetting to find out. The damage is done and I am out a vehicle over it as the damage is caused to the ENGINE/PISTONS. The timing chain is INSIDE the engine housing and THIS is the defect in the design. Oil splashes over into places it should not be, causing corrosion and combined with the fact that it is burning off this oil and causing damage because of lack of oil as well. The solution, is a nominal offer of 10% off this KNOWN issue and bill for a new engine. This is not ok. I am at 101k miles so just out of the zone for lemon laws, but this is a serious design issue and will cause severe hardship to those who own these vehicles. The recall is for previous years than my own, the issue is the same. The vehicle is NOT SAFE TO DRIVE without the proper indications that the oil is being burned off and damaging the engine.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: If the information on the certification labels is incorrect, the operator may install incorrectly sized tires or rims or may improperly inflate the tires, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the certification label, free of charge. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1050, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 46600.

The LT 2.4 4 cylinder is perfect for you. The gas mileage is great and it's very comfortable. The instruments are very easy to use. It's incredible how much passenger room there is in the front and back seats, and there's plenty of cargo area.

Hi there! We were originally planning on purchasing an Equinox, but unfortunately, none of the 4 cylinder options offered dual control AC. One of us prefers a cooler temperature around 60-65 degrees, while the other prefers a warmer temperature around 70-75 degrees. We realized that having this feature was essential for us, especially considering the next 45 years. That's why we ultimately decided to go with the Ford Edge SEL. Thanks for your understanding!

I recently traded in my Equinox after owning it for two years. Although it was a great car and very reliable, I decided to part ways with it. The gas mileage was incredible, and I only had to fill up twice a week, if that, during my 30-minute commute to work. I never had any issues with it, just routine maintenance. I was able to sell it for a good value at 150,000 miles. The Equinox is very comfortable, has a smooth ride, and offers a decent amount of space. I've even used it for three moves, and it came in handy. It's also great for long distance trips. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a reliable daily use SUV.

We have a lot of music that we enjoy listening to and were surprised to learn that it would cost $1000 to have one installed. We find the controls and options on the screen to be overwhelming and not very user-friendly. As a result, we prefer to take our older car on longer trips as it has all the features we need and is more comfortable. We recently took a trip in a 2005 Impala which still has a CD player that works great. We believe that a CD player is a basic feature that should be included in all cars. We are disappointed that General Motors has chosen to remove this feature and may consider other options in the future. We recently visited a Toyota dealer and were pleased to find that the new Camry still has a CD player.

I have owned my car for just over 2 years. Although it has been a challenging period, the transmission failed while I was at work, just below 50,000 miles. Additionally, the manual mode and other electronic components are malfunctioning. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend purchasing this vehicle.

Hi there! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention a few things that I noticed about the vehicle. It seems that there may be some issues with the quality and attention to detail, as the dashboard and door panels appear to be misaligned and of varying thickness. Specifically, the driver's side measures at 11mm while the passenger's side measures at 4mm. It almost looks as though the vehicle may have undergone a less-than-ideal repair after an accident to the front end. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of these observations. When I first bought the car, I thought the seats were tolerable. However, during long drives, I find them to be quite uncomfortable. Unfortunately, no amount of adjustment seems to make a difference. I'm 6 feet tall with an average/athletic build, so I don't think my body type is particularly unusual. Despite this, the lumbar support is in the wrong spot, and my butt sinks back into the seat so much that it puts most of my body weight on my thighs. Additionally, the whole seat makes me feel constrained and trapped, which is not a pleasant feeling. There are hard boosters on either side of your thighs that prevent freedom of movement and adjustment. Perhaps it's partly because I'm a bit of a squirmy person, but I find these seats to be quite uncomfortable. I hope to be able to replace this car soon, but until then, I'll just have to make do.
