2022 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-20
- VIN: 2GNAXMEV9N6
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: On July 20, 2024 I was leaving a stop sign to pull onto the highway. When I tried to accelerate, my car would not move. The engine attempted to get power, but it would not go. After a few minutes, the car would move but I could not get up to speed as quick as usual. A few days later, I was driving about 30 mph through town, and felt what I thought was my transmission slip, causing me to lose power/speed. On July 24th, I contacted my local GM dealer, and got the car in to get it fix. They told me it was a turbo valve, and changed it. There was no engine lights or clear evidence of what was wrong with my car, but they said that the issue had been fixed by the turbo valve change. I had my car back August 5th. On August 9th, I was going uphill on a highway, and my car lost power again, causing me to lose speed and power. I called the car dealership that worked on my car and told them that it was not fixed. My car did produce a check engine light this time, and I relayed that to the mechanics, and they said that they would look into it. I took it into the dealership that day, and they have been working on it since. The dealership has been in contact with GM, but no progress has been made. It has been in the shop since August 9th, it is currently September 18 and they are not fixing the problem. They say that because there is no engine lights/messages on the dash, that they are unsure of what is going on and how to fix it.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: 3GNAXFEV2NS
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Employee was driving across the county to their office when the check engine light and all 4 tire pressure lights came on. She was able to make it back to the office where she informed the Support Services department of the organization. A Support Services employee was able to come out and drive the vehicle to the dealership for an inspection. The tech informed our employee that it was very good that we brought the vehicle in when we did and were lucky the engine did not die while an employee was driving. Per the repair order detail attached, the technicians found that it was a fuel pump issue; found in 3 other of our 2022 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles (4 total). In this instance, the vehicle did not shut off while driving. Considering two of our other vehicles shut off and created a highly dangerous situation for the driver and other drivers around them, we are lucky no one was injured. This is a major concern.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
- VIN: 3GNAXHEV4NS
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle stalled and stopped running while turning at a busy road and created a hazardous situation in traffic. I had to have a mandatory tow off the road to my residence. I called the dealership, and car would not start again so called for a tow (which was covered by GM). The Equinox was taken to a nearby Chevrolet dealership. The second tow and repair were covered by GM under Warranty as I had less than 7000 miles on my SUV. Per the documentation provided by the Chevrolet dealership, the Fuel Pump Driver Control Module had to be replaced in my 2022 Chevrolet Equinox. On doing a search on NHTSA, I discovered there was a recall for 2022 Equinox for this issue however it did not apply to my particular VIN. Overall, this incident, in my opinion put me in danger as well as the public who were commuting home and had to avoid my stalled car.

This was an incredibly dangerous and life threatening situation. Vehicle ended up having to get towed to the dealership Per the repair order detail attached, the technicians found that it was a fuel pump issue; found in 3 other of our 2022 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles (4 total). This is a major concern.

Attempted to restart the vehicle, engine would not start. Support Services within the organization was informed and was able to get the vehicle to the dealership for inspection. Per the repair order detail attached, the technicians found that it was a fuel pump issue; found in 3 other of our 2022 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles (4 total). This is a major concern. Luckily the vehicle malfunctioned while still in the parking lot. Could have been a major life threatening situation if the employee was on the road.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-07
- VIN: 3GNAXFEV0NS
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Employee was driving on a state road, about 55-60 miles per hour. They received an error message and a check engine light appeared. Immediately thereafter, the engine "died" and the vehicle began to decelerate. They were forced to pull off onto the grass on the side of the road. The power remained functional, but the engine wouldn't work. Support Services team within the organization was informed and was able to restart the engine after a few tries, eventually driving the vehicle directly to the dealership to be looked at. Employee felt unsafe due to the engine "shutting off" while on a high MPH state road and having to pull off on the side of that road (a two lane state road). Potential life threatening hazard for the driver and other drivers around. Per the repair order detail attached, the technicians found that it was a fuel pump issue; found in 3 other of our 2022 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles (4 total). This is a major concern.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27
- VIN: 2GNAXJEV3N6
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle stalled and stop running while accelerating at a busy intersection and created a hazardous situation in traffic. Had to push the car off the road. Car would not start again so called for a tow. The Equinox was taken to a nearby Chevrolet dealership. I ran a tester on it and the error code was P129F, Fuel Pump Driver Control Module, Fuel Pump Speed Signal Incorrect. In doing a search, I discovered there was a recall for 2022 Equinox for this issue however I never received a notice for my 2022 Equinox. This put me in danger as well as two of my children who were riding with me. I'm extremely dissappointed and alarmed that Chevy did not send a letter with the recall. The dealership apparently repaired it under warranty and not under a recall which is disturbing to me since they may be "under-reporting" this problem.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
- VIN: 3GNAXUEV0NL
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving along the road the engine suddenly, without warning shut down. My wife and I were left stranded in the travel lane of the road. The fuel tank had about 3/4 of a tank of gas in it. The engine would not start. When the engine quit, we did not have any control of the steering and we just coast to a stop. We were moving at about 25 to 30 miles an hour on a twisting, hilly road when the engine quit. We were left stranded in a very dangerous curve on a hill. Visibility for oncoming traffic is hampered by the curves and the hill, a dangerous stretch of road. The vehicle was taken to Central Chevrolet via flatbed. The fuel pump module was replaced, and I got my car back the next day. My wife was a nervous wreck. Our Equinox was just over two years old with only 7634 miles on it. To have the engine quit is one thing but to not have control of the steering afterwards or even get into neutral to get it off the road is dangerous to say the least. Central Chevrolet did an excellent job repairing the vehicle and getting it back to me quickly. My concern is will this happen again and if it did happen on the highway, it could be disastrous and possibly deadly.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV5NL
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The fuel pump module failed as I was driving 65 mph on the interstate. Thankfully, I was able to pull over without an incident. My safety was at risk stopping suddenly at this rate of speed and I was thankful I was in the right hand lane and able to pull off the road. After waiting an hour, my car was towed to the dealer and the fuel pump module has been replaced. There were no warning lamps or other symptoms prior to this failure. My car was covered under the warranty and I have contacted GM and filed a complaint regarding this situation as my car only has 9,000 miles on it.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-27

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3GNAXHEV6NS
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: After going very slow, mostly stopped, in stop-and-go traffic for 2 hours, my Chevy Equinox suddenly started to shake and would not respond. The car/engine was on and in Drive but the gas petal would not propel the car forward. My steering wheel locked and I could not turn it in any way. The Engine Light came on and a message came on the dash that said "Push Brake to Start Engine" but pushing the brake did not change anything, and the engine had never turned off. I tried to turn the car off by mashing the brake and pushing the engine stop button but my car would not turn off. I rolled backward into the car behind me as could not go forward and traffic had to be routed around me. About 20 minutes later, I tried to turn my car off and it did cut off completely. About 30 minutes later a police officer was able to turn my car on, put it in neutral, and roll it to the side of the road. The check engine light was still on. My car was towed 200 miles back home and I was able to drive it off the tow truck and into our driveway but the engine light was still on. The next day, the car turned on and the engine light was not on. I did not feel safe to drive it so we had it towed to the Carmax where we purchased it. Carmax towed it to a local chevy dealership and they said it was the fuel nodule. It is currently awaiting those repairs.

I purchased this vehicle in April 2022 and have driven 27,000 miles without any issues. I use it for personal use and also for work when I visit patients and deliver and set up home medical equipment. The ride quality, handling, braking, fuel economy, and cargo space are all great. Some people have complained about the 1.5L turbo being weak, but I disagree. While it may not have Corvette power, it gets the job done and doesn't require premium fuel. I was unsure about the automatic headlight dimming system, but it works well. As someone who has owned turbo engines before, I recommend not skimping on maintenance for this GDI Turbo engine. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market for a new car.

It seems smaller inside and the seats are too small.

The Equinox-RS is a fantastic SUV to consider purchasing. With a 5-star crash rating, it's a safe choice for drivers. It's also incredibly spacious - even at 5'7

This is my 4th equinox. I absolutely love this model!

It sounds like you had a bit of a rough time with all the challenges of production delays, supply chain issues, and no inventory on hand. But I'm so glad to hear that it was worth it in the end and that you love your new lease!

I had the opportunity to test drive a 2022 Equinox on 02-10-2022. While I found the exterior design to be pleasing, I thought that the interior controls, cubbies, and buttons were mediocre. However, considering the price, I think they were not too bad. The engine power was a little low, but my main concern was the driver's seat. Although the idea is for the seat to wrap around you, being 5'7 myself, I found that the seat sides were pushing my shoulders forward a little, which would not be comfortable on a semi-long ride. Overall, I found this SUV to be worth the money, but the seat comfort could be improved.

Bought the 2022 in August 2022. It's a good looking ride, but the gas mileage is unimpressive. The little 4 cylinder motor is pretty gutless. Not impressed with the electronics either. Android Auto is unreliable at best. Google maps don't work unless you pay for OnStar. I feel pretty ripped off for what I paid.

I also have a 2015 LS model and I share your disappointment about the removal of the sunglasses compartment and the radio controls on the steering wheel in the 2022 LS model.

Although my Equinox has only 6500 miles on it, I have experienced several issues with it. The rear bumper was loose and had to be pushed back in, the driver's space is very tight, and the radio and climate control often freeze. Additionally, the transmission gets stuck in gears and the auto stop feature makes a clunking noise when it starts back up. Furthermore, the defrost does not effectively defrost all of my windows, which results in ice forming on the inside of the windows. Overall, I cannot recommend this vehicle.
