2018 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common 2018 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily involve the brakes, engine, and electrical system.
- Brake Issues: A significant number of complaints have been made about brake problems in the 2018 Equinox. Some owners have experienced a "service brake assist" warning on the dashboard, while others have reported complete or partial brake failure due to issues such as failed brake boosters or vacuum pumps. These problems can lead to reduced braking performance and potentially dangerous driving conditions.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems in the 2018 Equinox range from dashboard warning lights, a lack of power, and hesitant acceleration. Some owners have reported loss of engine power or erratic responses to the throttle pedal, which can be caused by turbo failures or unusual error codes that require a trip to the dealer for resolution.
- Electrical System Issues: Complaints about the electrical system in the 2018 Equinox include issues with the start/stop system and reduced engine power. Some owners have reported hesitation during acceleration, which may be due to turbo lag with the 1.5L engine. Additionally, some owners have noticed a gas smell in the cabin after filling up, which is likely due to overfilling the tank, but can also be a sign of a more serious issue.
Despite these common problems, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has received generally positive reviews from automotive experts. For example, Edmunds named the 2018 model one of the "Best Small SUVs for 2018" due to its car-like handling, good fuel economy, and numerous options.
In summary, while the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has received positive reviews from experts, it is not without its share of common problems. Brake issues, engine problems, and electrical system issues have all been reported by owners, and can potentially lead to dangerous driving conditions. However, with proper maintenance and regular inspections, these issues can be identified and addressed before they become major problems.

- Summary: I'm writing to request an extension of the recall for the Brake Vacuum Pump issue and seek compensation for repairs on my 2018 Chevy Equinox. In November 2023, while exiting [XXX] in Warwick, RI, my brakes failed despite full pressure. I had to steer into the breakdown lane and eventually stopped in a parking lot. At the time, I was nine months pregnant and extremely shaken. After stopping, the vehicle exhibited erratic behavior and not stopping, entering "limp mode." The car was towed to a local mechanic who initially thought the brakes were at fault. It was later diagnosed at Sullivan Tire that a "catastrophic failure of the Brake Vacuum Pump" caused camshaft damage, leading to repair costs of $3,197.17. The mechanic stated this failure was unprecedented for a vehicle with only 64,271 miles. I discovered that a recall for this issue exists but does not cover the 2018 Equinox. Many owners of this model have reported similar problems. Requests: Recall Extension: Please extend the recall to include the 2018 Equinox and other affected models to prevent further incidents. Compensation: I seek reimbursement of $3,197.17 for repairs. I have documentation and faulty parts available for inspection if needed. I have contacted Chevy and they have not been helpful, and this needs to be filed for a full recall. Attached are the repair invoice, proof of faulty parts, and links to related complaints. I look forward to your prompt resolution to prevent future issues for consumers. I still have the damaged parts for proof failure in my possession. First time the car was parked fully functioning the night before, woke up the next morning for work and there was no brakes. Replaced the vacuum pump and they worked good as new. SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
- VIN: 2GNAXJEV9J6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: Due to mechanical error with the vacuum brake pump that has had millions of vehicles listed in the recall except for the Equinox, it caused $4,000 worth of damage to my vehicle and almost caused a crash on a highway in close proximity to an ambulance that was actively on an emergency run. I was on a major highway traveling at about 60 MPH. I was able to coast enough to wear I could safely get to the shoulder of the highway, take an exit ramp, and coast up the hill out of the way of the ambulance. I contacted GM and have yet to hear anything further back. This incident could have cause a catastrophic crash and further delayed medical treatment for whomever was needing the ambulance. After some research on the matter, I found that 3.4 million vehicles of GM were recalled after this exact issue had resulted in 113 accidents and 13 injuries. 2014-2018 model year Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon were all listed under the recall, but not the Equinox. After being forced to have the vehicle towed to a dealership, they confirmed that the vacuum brake pump seizing up is what caused the pedal to lock up and send metal into my engine, which has now cost me upwards of $4,000. General Motors failed to include the Equinox in this recalls and still refuses to do so. I fear this will happen, in time, to other owners of a Chevrolet Equinox. I am reaching out to all possible avenues for what my next options are and attempting to prevent this from happening to someone else. GM needs to be held responsible for this matter and issue a recall for the Equinox as well before something catastrophic happens if it hasn't all ready.

POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
- VIN: 3GNAXJEVXJS
- Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,ENGINE
- Summary: So where do i begin. There are no leaks on my driveway but I have to add coolant every other day & then when I opened my hood it looks like there’s grease everywhere like over the bolts where the bottom & top meet. At time the car stalls it loses power or doesn’t even pick up power. It just drags. Sometimes a strong odor comes from the vents of the a/c & then it at times doesn’t blow cool air just flat air. Also six months after having the vehicle the 2 TPMS went out & when I took it back to dealer where i purchased it they basically told me that I didn’t even have any TPMS that the machine didn’t pick up any & now the display was showing all 4 empty & the TPMS icon constantly on the display. I found that odd & I didn’t know much about TPMS at the time. I was still bothered so I kept asking other people I would come in contact with being new to the state of Texas & they said the only way it would not come up on the machine would be as if they wouldn’t be inside as they were removed but again I drove in with just 2 marking on the display. Not a big deal. I did purchase the gold package of warranty with the vehicle but I have no idea how to use it. I’m not sure if they even did all the past recalls on this vehicle. I read one of them was a window & I too hear that as I drive

- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the right front intermediate drive shaft assembly, free of charge. The recall began August 25, 2017. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 17329.

We absolutely love owning this car! It's incredibly comfortable, with ample storage and plenty of room in the back. We're thrilled with the gas mileage it gets for its size (we're averaging 29.2 mpg, even with a lot of city driving). The infotainment system with Apple Carplay/Android Auto is fantastic, and we love having the controls on the steering wheel. We're also impressed by how quiet the ride is. The engine shuts off at red lights to save fuel, and while the transition isn't completely seamless, you get used to it quickly. We highly recommend the confidence & convenience package, especially if you get the LT - the blind spot sensors, heated seats, and garage remote are all features we absolutely adore. We got an amazing deal on the vehicle, which is a huge plus for us. We also appreciate that it's designed by an American car company. While we did have a minor initial quality issue, we haven't experienced any reliability issues in over 20,000 miles.

This is a great vehicle! It rides like a car, not a truck, and gets good MPG. It's definitely a good value for the money. I took it on a road trip and it performed excellently. The start-stop engine technology takes some getting used to, but I had no problems with the operation of the system. The technology in the vehicle is wonderful - Chevy really hit a home run with this one!

I've had the chance to drive several SUVs this year, but none of them have handled as well as the AWD 1.5L Turbo 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. They also offer a 2.0L Turbo that gets 28 miles per gallon on the AWD system, but during my test drive, I was able to get over 30 MPG. One thing I really appreciated was the ability to switch the AWD system on or off, which isn't an option on my current Outback. The Equinox is also incredibly quiet, thanks to its active noise cancelling triple seals on the doors and insulation in the wheel wells. It's a shame I can't bring that level of quiet into my house, where my kids are always screaming and crying. But back to the vehicle... I was really impressed with the remote window operation. By holding down the unlock button, all the windows rolled down within seconds. I've never seen that feature on any other vehicle in the market.

05/2018 Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that if you live in a state with a lot of snow or ice, the AWD would be a great choice. However, if you're in the south, FWD would be just fine. Also, I wanted to mention that the mileage on this car is fantastic! So far, I've been getting 48.3 MPG on the highway and 33.5 MPG in the city.

I've only driven a few hundred miles so far, but I'm happy to report that everything seems to be going well. I feel like I got a great deal on this purchase. The Equinox drives really smoothly on the highway. When I drove it home from the dealership, I almost thought they had given me a 1.5Turbo instead of a Diesel because it was so quiet. You can tell it's a diesel under the hood at times, but it doesn't really bother me. It's a fuel-efficient vehicle right off the lot. I'm really impressed with all of the electronics in the Premier. While the LT comes pretty loaded with CarPlay, I decided to go all out and get the top-of-the-line Premier since I plan on keeping this car for a while. The seats are comfortable, and as a parent of two little girls, the 5-star safety rating is important to me. Installing car seats in the Equinox is a breeze. This is the perfect daily commuter that can also double as a family vehicle when needed. To be fair to consumers doing their research, I'll update in a few months. One last thing, I had to return the first Equinox I bought because of paperwork issues, and I didn't like the way I was treated. However, I'm happy to say that the second one I bought from a different Chevy dealer drives much better. Both were Premiers, but they didn't drive the same. The first one had a noticeable diesel rattle, while the one I have now has a slight diesel vibration in the steering wheel at start-up, but the passengers don't feel it. I'm told that the one I have now was made in Mexico, and I have to say they did a great job on this vehicle. This is an excellent fuel-efficient commuter/family vehicle, and I love the idea of only having to fill up once a month! I've updated the value rating. You can get one of the lower trims for under $25,000!

I have experienced several issues with my car, starting just two weeks after purchasing it. The fuel gauge did not display a full tank and GM did not have a solution for this problem until a year later. As a result, I was unable to determine how much gas I had in my car for a year. Additionally, during this time, my car play would frequently freeze up and the volume, channel, and steering wheel controls would not work. Despite being told that the issue was with my phone, even after getting a new phone, the problem persisted. GM does not guarantee that car play or android auto will work when you purchase the car. I have also noticed some shaking and hesitation while driving, which I was told is normal for this car. Overall, I would not recommend purchasing this car for safety and hands-free purposes, as it has caused me several headaches over the past year. Thank you, GM.

We purchased our brand new car in November 2017. During the first three months, we had to take it in for servicing eight times due to various issues. On the first day of owning the car, we noticed a noise and took it in to discover a defective exhaust system. Within two weeks, we were back at the servicing center to fix a defective driver's side window that wouldn't go up with one pull of the button. Next came the defective roof rails that made noise when driving, followed by needing a new timing belt at 2000 miles (belts should last 60,000 miles). Then the oil light came on at 3000 miles, which we researched and found to be a common issue. In fact, a lawsuit was just won for car owners of earlier models. To top it all off, we've had the car for 1 year and 7 months, it has under 9000 miles, and it started making a noise again. We took it back to the servicing center where we learned we have another defective exhaust system. Despite these issues, we still love the look and size of the car. It's very easy to get in and out of, which is great for me as I have a bad back. The Equinox has a great radio system, and my daughters who are twins love it too. They're learning to drive and think the teen report is fun to review. Using the foot to open the trunk is nice, but for some reason, it doesn't work when my hands are full (probably user error). There's plenty of storage in the back, plus added storage under the trunk liner. It's very roomy. A few of my mild complaints would be that we have a tough time putting the second-row seat back up if it was down, as it's heavy. I wish when you used remote start it would honk to acknowledge it is on. The turning radius could be improved, and the storage on the driver's door is small. I have a handicap parking permit, but it doesn't fit. Overall, we're not upset about all the problems we had in the beginning. Everything was covered with the warranty, and the car is easy to drive. We haven't lost our faith in Chevrolet.Actually, I bought a brand new Chevy Trax for my daughter, which should be arriving soon.

Hi there! Have you had a chance to check out the new 2018 Equinox? Just a heads up, service visits start at 6500 miles. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with my intercooler, ECM, and Mass AirFlow Sensor. It's currently on its 5th repair visit and we're still trying to figure out what's going on. I'm at 9000 miles now, but I'm hopeful we can get everything sorted out. It's a shame that vehicles aren't made like they used to be, but I'm still grateful for the dependability that I do have. Thanks for listening!

Our 2018 Equinox has been experiencing an engine miss at low speed during city driving. Despite the dealer's inability to replicate the issue during their test drive, we remain confident in our experience and expect a resolution that meets our expectations. We were informed that the vehicle is covered under a three-year warranty, and we trust that the dealership will honour this commitment to customer satisfaction. As valued customers, we expect a prompt and effective resolution to this issue, as it is essential to our continued satisfaction with our purchase.

I've been driving the Chevy Equinox Diesel Premier for 4 months now and have put just over 7,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I did experience some issues with the car, such as an electrical problem that required a 4-week stay at the shop, and some features like the vented seat, phone charger station, and sunroof interior cover not working properly. Additionally, the sunroof glass does not close correctly. While these issues have been frustrating, I wanted to share my experience with potential buyers. It's important to be aware of these potential issues before making a purchase.
