2007 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

- Summary: The ECM in my vehicle appears to have an intermittent failure that can cause it to send the vehicle into WOT at any time at random. I was stopped at a traffic signal. It turned green, I let off the brake and my vehicle learched forward for a second, and then, all of a sudden launched into and hit the vehicle in front of me. I tried to push down the brakes, but they were too stiff, and, no, my foot did not even get a chance to press the gas yet. There was only minor damage to my vehicle, however, the situation was extremely scary. I have since changed out the ECM and have had no issues since. I have seen this issue once before on a similar vehicle, except, what happened with that is the vehicle was in a garage, and the ECM had failed nearly completely and stuck the vehicle in WOT. In my case, I was still able to drive the vehicle home, so the issue appeared to me intermittent. I still have the original ECM for further investigation. As I understand it, this ECM is in thousands of GM vehicles, across multiple lines. GM Part Number: 12611090.

Since I purchased my car the passenger side air bag has never worked correctly. Sometimes it would turn on maybe 5% of the time I had a passenge. The 95% it doesn't come on and says service air bag. Now the service air bag is staying on. Chevrolet had a big recall on the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox for 2 or 3 problems with the passenger air bag. I can not afford to pay for this myself. I feel Chevrolet should pay for the fix. I am scared to drive my Equinox because I don't know if it is going to deploy while I'm driving. I had reported this on KKB more then once. - Summary: Passenger seat airbag is malfunctioning. It won't also sense that a passenger is seating in the seat. I am referring to a full grown adult and not a young child, so weight is not an issue and it should sense someone occupying the seat. The airbag will turn off and on while driving with the passenger seat occupied. When this happens, the service airbag system message comes across the dash as well as the red airbag light. This is a very serious safety issue that needs to be looked into. A passenger could get seriously injured or possibly die in the event of an accident, as the airbag won't deploy. First noticed the issue a few months ago and it seems to be happening more frequently.

Ive read on several forums.I was just on the freeway recently and it rained for about 5 minutes here in fresno California which is extremely unusual because it is still summer and the vehicle did this while i was driving. I could've caused an accident i had to pull over and stop driving. I turned off and on the car several times and the low power mode finally went away, and also the service stabilitrak system. Chevy is aware of this problem and they need to fix before somebody gets hurt

I'VE BEEN TOLD IT'S EITHER AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE, A RADIATOR ISSUE, OR ENGINE ELECTRICAL ISSUE. I CAN NOT KEEP PUTTING MONEY INTO A CAR THAT IS ONLY WORTH $2,500. MANY OTHER PEOPLE I HAVE NOTICED POSTED THE SAME ISSUE OF OVER HEATING AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT. IT SHOULD BE A CHEVY RECALL, AND REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER. OIL WAS PUT IN THE VEHICLE SO THAT I COULD DRIVE IT TO A SAFE LOCATION. ON NOVEMBER 18TH I WENT TO START THE VEHICLE TO GO TO WORK AND WITHOUT GOING ANY PLACE BUT SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY IT STARTED TO TELL ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS OVERHEATING AND TO TURN A/C OFF. AT THE SAME TIME STEERING WHEEL BECOMES VERY TIGHT AND UNABLE TO TURN. HAPPEN WHILE DRIVING ANY SPEED. HAVE HAD MANY VISITS TO MECHANICS: ECM REPLACED AND PROGRAMMED WAS THE LAST ATTEMPT PRIOR TO THAT I HAD A NEW STARTED PUT ON. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR CHEVROLET'S FROM MY RESEARCH. RECENTLY BOUGHT A USED 2014 CHEVY TRAVERSE LT AND I'M STARTED TO SEE THE SAME ISSUES AND I'VE ONLY HAD IT 1 WEEK. I'M VERY UPSET THESE MODELS AREN'T SAFE. TO MANY TIMES TO COUNT HOW MANY TIME IT'S HAPPENED MAYBE 30-40 IN 1 YEAR.

2007 Chevrolet Equinox recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox.

- Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas; model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, or Texas; model year 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona; and model year 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, or Texas. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the plastic supply or return port on the fuel pump module may crack, which could cause a fuel leak.
- Consequence: Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 21, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles in for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

DURING NHTSA IMPACT TESTS, THE INTERIOR OCCUPANT PROTECTION TEST POINTS EXCEEDED THE STANDARD REQUIREMENTS.

IN THESE VEHICLES, THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS BUILT WITH A PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM. WHEN TESTED WITH A REPRESENTATIVE UNRESTRAINED SMALL ADULT, THE SYSTEM IS REQUIRED TO TURN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER'S FRONTAL AIRBAG ON. AN ERROR IN THE SEAT SENSOR CALIBRATION CAN CAUSE IT TO FAIL THIS TEST. IN ADDITION, THIS CONDITION CAN PREVENT THE AIRBAG FROM TURNING OFF WHEN THE SEAT IS OCCUPIED BY A SMALL CHILD.
- Consequence: WHENEVER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT IS OCCUPIED, THE DRIVER SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK THE AIRBAG INDICATOR TO SEE IF THE AIRBAG IS ON OR OFF. IF IT IS NOT CORRECT FOR THE SITUATION, THE PASSENGER SHOULD BE MOVED TO A DIFFERENT SEAT. THIS CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO A SEAT OCCUPANT DURING CERTAIN CRASH CONDITIONS.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE SEAT'S ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

I bought this car used 6 months ago and have had no problems so far. The sliding rear seat is a brilliant idea that is very useful, and the rear seat room is excellent. At first, the center console mounted window switches struck me as odd, but I have come to love them because they offer very easy and visible access. The performance is acceptable, and the fuel mileage is better than I expected. Although the transmission seems unsure of which gear to use (5th or overdrive) and hunts between 40 and 50 mph, the sunroof whistles above 60 or so, and the front seat cushions seem a bit short, these issues do not negatively affect my appreciation for this vehicle.

This is a really lovely SUV! Congratulations on your purchase and I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much. It sounds like it's a big step up from your full-size trucks and has all the features you were hoping for. I bet your colleagues at work are envious! If you're considering an upgrade, I would definitely recommend the leather interior - it's totally worth it.

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoy driving this SUV! It's great to know that even though it's a midsize, it still has plenty of power and room. The car so far has been great. I love the exterior design. However, I noticed that the interior is subpar, and the radio seems bland. But don't worry, the car runs great and looks even better!

It sounds like you're enjoying your new car! It may take some time to get used to, but it's great that you find it comfortable. It performs well for an SUV, although you mentioned that the braking isn't as tight as your previous car and the air conditioning isn't as cold. On the bright side, you like being able to sit high and the XM radio has great sound quality. The memory feature is also a definite highlight. Additionally, the reminders for fuel and oil changes are super helpful!

I love the exterior of my 2007 Equinox and the XM radio is a great feature. However, I have experienced some issues with the interior. The heated seats work intermittently, so it's best to check them throughout the year, even in the summer, to avoid being caught out in the cold. Additionally, the right passenger airbag sensor doesn't always work, which is a known issue that GM has recalled. I also had an issue with the driver side seat mechanism not working for a couple of days, but I took it to the dealership and they were able to fix it. Lastly, the chrome center panel can reflect the sun and cause a blinding glare while driving. It's important to note that some things are only under warranty for 2 years, so don't delay taking your car in for repairs and make sure it's in the computer system every time.

Hi there! I noticed that the gauge needle is all over the dial and I'm not sure if or where the fuel level is since 2009. I'm also unsure why one works and not the other. Additionally, the dash lights don't brighten during the day, making it hard to see the gauges, but they do work at night. Could you provide more information on these issues? Thank you!

I purchased this car second-hand, and although my parents, particularly my dad, were fond of it, I personally did not enjoy it. While it may appear decent at first glance, the road noise is quite loud and the transmission is currently failing. I even had to install a new radio due to Chevrolet's poor design. Unfortunately, most of the car's electronics have stopped working. This experience has left me with a negative impression of General Motors, and I am hesitant to purchase any of their products in the future. Additionally, I have concerns about the car's safety, as the airbags failed to deploy during an accident. In hindsight, I should have opted for a Toyota or Ford, or any other brand besides GM.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the car I bought when I was pregnant. While I love many things about it, I have noticed a few issues that I wanted to mention. For example, the headrest can sometimes block my vision when I'm trying to look in the blind spots, which can be a bit frustrating. Additionally, the seats have become quite hard over time, which I think may be contributing to some back problems I've been having. I've also found that the plastic dashboard and steering wheel can be a bit tricky to clean. Finally, the trim around the shifter is quite large and reflective, which can be a bit distracting while driving. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my car and appreciate its reliability. While the gas mileage hasn't quite lived up to my expectations, I still get around 18.3MPGs on the highway, which is pretty good. Thanks for listening!

I must say, this vehicle looks great! However, it seems to have some reliability issues. My daughter has experienced some trouble with the car not starting on 5+ occasions, and the key even got stuck in the ignition. Unfortunately, we have found out that this is not an uncommon issue. Despite the great service provided by our dealership, they have been unable to identify the problem, although they have made some repairs. Additionally, the headlight has blown twice. While the vehicle may feel cheap, it is priced affordably and accelerates well. As someone who has owned 3 Trailblazers, I can say that there is no comparison. I would not downgrade to the Equinox. The ride is comparable to the Ford Escort. Overall, the Equinox may not be the most durable vehicle, but it is still a decent option. Chevy, it would be great if you could make some improvements to the vehicle!
