2019 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV6KS
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The driver's side seat belt would only extend a few inches so I was not able to pull it across my body and latch it. Until this happened, there was no prior indication that the seat belt was about to fail. Fortunately, this happened at home so I was not stranded. Although the vehicle is a 2019 model year, it has barely been used and is in excellent, clean condition. I tried to free the mechanism myself, but was unable to do so. I ended up calling a mobile mechanic who also tried freeing up the mechanism and was unable to do so. The entire seat belt mechanism had to be replaced. I was very surprised that GM did not cover the cost of replacing this essential (and legally required) safety device, which I believe failed due to a manufacturing defect. (I have over 35 years experience as an automotive reliability/test engineer.) I have the original malfunctioning part in my possession if it is useful to your investigation. Thank you.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- VIN: 2GNAXPEX1K6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while at a complete stop at a traffic light, the engine Auto START/STOP feature engaged, and the engine turned off; however, upon depressing the brake pedal to resume driving, the vehicle failed to respond, rolled backward, and nearly struck another vehicle. The contact depressed the brake pedal several times and the vehicle stopped. There was a message indicating a power brake assist failure displayed. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was inspected, and the dealer confirmed that the vehicle was not designed with a button or switch to manually deactivate the engine Auto START/STOP system. The contact was charged a fee for the diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- VIN: 2GNAXUEV1K6
- Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: originally system warning message to service brake system. had system checked by mechanic. nothing found. after a few weeks as i was merging on a highway i felt my engine start to stall. I immediately tried to make my way to the side of highway. brakes were very hard to press and car stalled with engine light immuninating, and no power steering. code P0017. engine will crank and sputter but will not start also has blowby present. cam and crankshaft sensors/actuator solenoids were replaced, then the vacuum pump cover was opened and found broken parts inside. upon removal of pump it was found broken. suspect broken parts are blocking crankshaft or either of the cams to not be able to rotate properly. this issue possibly has cause timing chain issues as well. parts in the vacuum caused it to seize. exhaust cam continued to spin shattering the end connected on the pump. I have done research and found that others have had the same thing occur with the warning for brake system and then weeks later the brakes do not work, which is due to the pump providing pressure for the brake boost system.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 3GNAXHEVXKS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the engine made an abnormal ticking sound. The contact stated that upon depressing the brake pedal two feet, the brake pedal travelled down as needed, causing the braking distance to be extended by 222 ft. approximately. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the vacuum pump had seized and shredded to parts inside the engine. The mechanic determined that the vacuum pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that two unknown dealers and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV1KS
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The same issue has occurred on my vehicle but the dealership is stating my vehicle is not covered even thought it states it has all the issues stated in this bulletin. N192271200 Charge Air Cooler Disconnect at Throttle Body. The car blows off the hose at the throttle body even after I replace the retainer clip myself. I am now having the dealership repair the hose and clip as it needs both they said. It obviously is a flaw in more vehicles than what they have disclosed. Very unfortunate they do not cover this for all owners in the same year as this series of vehicles.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
- VIN: 2GNAXHEV5K6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving the car cuts completely off while driving. Everything blacks out. No lights will come on, not even the emergency lights. It starts back up in about 15 to 20 minutes, lights come back on. And it starts back up. This has happened at least 3 times, almost causing me to get hit because when it shuts off it want roll or do anything else
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
- VIN: 2GNAXJEV1K6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: Brakes locked up after turning off of an exit leading to an intersection and incident that could have killed myself and those around me. AAA towed my car to their garage and said it fits a safety recall according to the year make and model and I needed to take it to Chevy because the Brake Vacuum Pump has disintegrated despite my brakes, rotors, brake pads, fluids, etc all in brand new and phenomenal shape as well as a well maintenance’d vehicle which is proof this is a manufacturer issue, not my doing, nor is it “wear and tear”. The vehicle also smelled like fire which is another reason management at AAA and other local garages feel this is a safety issue beyond what they feel comfortable with. Chevy said that although they fixed many of my make and model for this same very DANGEROUS issue, nothing can be done because it doesn’t fit the vin. AAA advised me to reach out again explaining this is a danger on the road and needs fixed properly. Other garages will not feel comfortable fixing this issue knowing this recall by GM lists public litigation’s totaling millions of dollars worth of lawsuits for the SAME EXACT problem. I would appreciate urgent assistance on getting this extremely dangerous recall taken care of.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
- VIN: 2GNAXKEV7K6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Engine light came on. Said (reduced engine pressure). Started jerking then breaks went out.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
- VIN: 3GNAXJEV0KS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was traveling at expressway speeds (70 mph) when traffic in front of me hit the brakes quickly to avoid an object in the road. At this time, I hit my brakes relatively hard and fast in what I would describe as a panic brake. I avoided incident here. About a mile further up the road, traffic in front of me hit the brakes once again. At this time, I also hit my brakes, but I could not. My brake pedal was hard as a rock, and it would push down only about 2 or 3 inches with little to no effect. I was afraid I might break the pedal arm. I was able to maintain my lane until about 40 mph at which time I was forced to hit the shoulder to avoid colliding with the cars in front of me which were now stopped. I pressed the brake pedal hard and coasted along the shoulder of the expressway for about 40 or 50 yards, rolling past the stopped traffic. A few minutes after my car came to a complete stop, the information panel on my dashboard read "service brake assist". My car was towed to a GM dealership local to where I came to a stop. The documentation from the dealership, as well as what I was verbally told, indicates that there was an internal failure of the vacuum pump. According to the service manager, there was nothing I could have done to prevent this. Obviously, I was extremely lucky. If this would have happened in two-lane city traffic, or approaching a stop light I would have been forced to veer into oncoming traffic or simply barrel into those in front of me. I know this, because for the last month, as I'm driving, I constantly analyze what would happen if my brakes were to go out like that at various points along my drive. Often times, my only option would be to brace for a major accident or land my car in the front yard of a business. This catastrophic failure could have easily killed me, and/or other drivers on the road. Other people will not be so lucky, and I know this. For that reason, it's time for NHTSA to finally take action on this matter.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
- VIN: 3GNAXPEX3KS
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Vacuum pump exploded and ended up breaking the cam shaft. Brakes wouldn't work for a minute completely seizing up in rush hour traffic. It did eventually stop. Got it to the auto shop close by and they inspected the vehicle. They stated this shouldn't have happened. Also, in their experience they have never seen someone able to drive their car with this issue. It typically locks up the engine by sending broken pieces inside and blows it. They said I was very lucky it didn't cause an accident, catch fire due to the oil, or explode the engine from the broken pieces. The techs stated they have seen this a lot in the Chevy Malibus and some in the equinox's but that they run on the same engine so that would make sense. There was no warning prior to this happening. The vehicle was inspected by the auto shop techs and report sent to me with photos of all damages.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- VIN: 2GNAXJEV6K6
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I have 2019 chevy equinox I purchase the car last year with 61 miles. On March 12, 2024 I was 5 minutes away from home after driving an hour from work, try to stop at the stop sign the car didn't stop I tried several time to stop finally put it in neutral for the car to slow down to be able to pull over to stop thank God I wasn't hurt. After taking it to the dealership to get look at now the telling me my camshaft broke to pieces which will cost with the vacuum booster $24000 with only 70 miles.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-23
- VIN: 3GNAXKEVXKL
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the "Service Brake Assist" message briefly flashed on the instrument panel. The vehicle then independently downshifted and decelerated to 30 MPH, with the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle but was able to coast the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The contact was able to turn off the vehicle after the failure; however, the mechanic was unable to diagnose the vehicle. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where a mechanic informed the contact that the vacuum pump had failed and sent debris through the camshaft. The contact was informed that the vacuum pump, timing chain, cam shaft, and pistons all needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was given a reference number. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-17
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV8KS
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Our 2019 Chevrolet Equinox had a sudden Brake Vacuum Pump failure causing loss of braking power by about 80%. The only reason we did not have an accident is it was early morning and there was no traffic when we exited the highway. I was not happy to realize that GM has no recall on this. They apparently knew this was a problem and in more recent years have changed the design. The other flaw is this pump is attached to the wall of the engine and shrapnel can fall into the engine compartment and that debris could lead to total engine failure if it travels to the combustion area. This is not only dangerous but financially ruining.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
- VIN: 3GNAXUEV6KL
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: See attached document for complaint
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-06
- VIN: 2GNAXKEV0K6
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: At steady highway speeds, after driving an extended period on straight sections of highway, the steering sticks; requires a tug to get the wheel to turn left or right. My car is NOT equipped with Lane Keeping Assistance. I usually first feel this nearly an hour into a trip to our daughter's house, 2 1/2 hrs. away. I took the car into the dealer at 21.6K miles and in eighteen miles they "could not duplicate" and said there were no TSB's or computer updates for the problem. Now at 73K miles, this problem persists. I have seen a couple of others post this exact issue about their 2018-and-newer Equinoxes, on Equinox forums/sites, also with no satisfaction from their dealers. This could be especially dangerous on wet/slick roads. Of course a dealer won't be able to reproduce it as they won't drive a car multiples miles on a straight road without turning the wheel, and then attempting to turn it.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-24
- VIN: 3GNAXKEV7KS

The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The ABS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to duplicate the failure. Later, the contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the vacuum pump, resulting in damage to the timing chain. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
- VIN: 3GNAXUEV9KS
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: UNKNOWN Shift to park after pulling to into parking spot and coming to complete stop. Great car! You've already put 30k miles on it, that's impressive. And the best part? You're getting 34mpg! Keep up the good work.
-
I've had turbo cars before, but nothing as slow as this one. Although it's better than a straight 4 cyl, it doesn't quite compare to the V6 Equinox, the Mazda C7, or the 87 twin turbo Corvette. However, it has a bigger feel to it and drives like a bigger SUV. Sometimes it's hard to get used to the starting and stopping of the engine, but I'm getting there. Right now, it fits what I do.
-
I recently purchased a used SUV with low mileage that was in mint condition. It has a ton of features that I'm loving, from the heated front seats to the assisted liftgate, recliner backs on the rear seats, and tons of leg room for both front and back passengers. The front passenger seat can also be lifted and lowered. The vehicle approaching symbol in both side mirrors is a great feature for those blind spots. The dashboard isn't too deep, which makes cleaning the inside of the windshield much easier. I also appreciate the rear wiper, which I've never had before. The SUV handles beautifully and comfortably, making it perfect for short trips to the grocery store or road trips to our escape destinations. I'm so glad we made this purchase!

I think I got a great value because I was able to get a lot of optional equipment that isn't even offered on some luxury/European SUVs, for far less money. I did buy used, but with very low miles. Most of the depreciation of a vehicle occurs in the first year's miles, which allowed me to purchase more of the options that I enjoy. Edmunds' site helps with making a more informed decision through the classes, if only for the 5-year cost. It's great to hear that they are offering more features that were only available on the premier trim for 2020, on the LT trim. I'm mainly speaking of the safety features that come standard on the 2019 premier trim. However, buying 19

I’ve had my 2019 Equinox for about a year now, and after driving 18k miles, including a good mix of city driving and several long distance road trips, I can confidently say that the car has been flawless. It’s fun to drive, handles excellently, gets good gas mileage, and is very dependable and reliable. As an older adult, I really appreciate all the great safety features and the excellent visibility while driving - there are no blind spots. In my opinion, this is probably the best American vehicle I have ever owned. Great job Chevrolet!

I would like to suggest avoiding vehicles equipped with Auto Stop. In my personal experience, I found it to be a challenging feature to use as it cannot be bypassed or disabled. I own a 2019 Equinox with this feature and have decided to park it until I can resell it. Although the vehicle is only 4 months old with less than 1000 miles on it, I am hesitant to drive it in town or where there's traffic of any kind. I believe Chevy built a decent vehicle, but the poorly designed and non-effective way to save 8ozs of gasoline per year ruined it. I hope Chevy can improve this feature in the future.

I have the 1.5 ltr and recently it's been acting up. It won't shift into overdrive at higher speeds. When trying to pass and accelerate, it will suddenly start hesitating, vibrating, and losing power, which is not good when you're trying to pass. I took it into the dealer, and they said it was some sensor in the front and ordered a cover. However, I highly doubt a cover is going to fix the problem. I drove it last winter and never had this issue. I'm not happy!

The vehicle experienced a sudden malfunction while I was driving through an intersection, causing it to sputter and enter limp mode. Despite the dangerous situation, I was able to safely bring the vehicle to a stop and restart it while on a road with a speed limit of 45 miles per hour. Moving forward, I will be taking the necessary steps to ensure that this issue is resolved and does not happen again.

I got the Equinox Premier edition. Although it's supposed to be the top of the line, I was expecting it to be better made and more luxurious. Unfortunately, the car feels like it was made of plastic and I feel like I'm driving a toy car. However, the surround vision is a great feature that sold me on this vehicle. The storage space is also fantastic, providing more than enough room to store items. On the downside, the take off is very sluggish and the gas mileage is not that great, which was my main reason for getting a new car. Overall, I think this car may be a good 1st car for a teen, but not at this price. I hope this feedback helps others make an informed decision before purchasing.

I recently leased a 2019 Chevy Equinox with only 200 miles on it. However, I have been experiencing some technical problems. Unfortunately, I am unable to answer calls through the car and the screen has gone completely black. I have already contacted the dealership to have it looked at, but I am disappointed that I have to pay for the repairs. I have only had the car for 3 months, which is frustrating. I am currently trying to see if anyone else has experienced similar issues, as it may warrant a recall. Please be cautious if considering this vehicle.
