2008 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

- Summary: I am constantly having to fix my "learn remote" settings, vehicle stereo volume does not always match the level of it's output, blinker continues to get stuck on even after the steering wheel is in the position for the blinker to have ceased, door locks are sometimes stuck unlocked and sometimes stuck locked, ignition sometimes locked in ACC and will not allow for key to be removed, lug nuts have somehow become "swollen" and the dealership could not remove them in order to do a rotation, there is no protection plate under the vehicle causing easy access to vital items, the AC (for the third time since I got the car a year ago) has mysteriously stopped working, the fan motor continues to run for approximately 35 minutes after the vehicle has been turned off, fuel injectors are clogged (second time and I have already had this issue cleaned), headlights have collected water on inside, there is no rubber hose barrier(s) for any door, the hood, the hatch, the door windows, charging outlets are loosely fitted and do not add life to my electronics(they are for whatever reason being drained), the entire underside of the vehicle has become damaged, has begun to rust and bolts/plugs/other vital components have needed to be replaced once again due to there being no protection for the underside of the vehicle. These are just the components that I can think of off the top of my head!

I believe this problem is a safety issue and needs to be reported to GM Motor Corporation!!! I am currently experiencing the delayed shifting from park to drive. On some occasions, the vehicle drops into limp mode and will not go over 15 mph. It occurs at random times and when it does, it will downshift violently almost to the point of over-running the engine. It is a real safety hazard and needs a recall!!!!!

I have replaced the thermostat, water pump, temperature sensor, antifreeze (with GM antifreeze) after flushing out the radiator, and it still gets hot. The dashboard heat gauge is not working but the warning “ENGINE HOT. AC OFF” flashes all the time. We took the thermostat out so the coolent could circulate while the weather is warm. I am aware that the computer in the car has been replaced at least once and I think it may be malfunctioning now. I have an appointment with the Service Dept at McLaughlin Chevrolet dealer in Milwaukie Oregon on Tuesday June 22, 2021. I hope they will check the compression on the chambers and the computer. I want them to replace the sensor, thermostat, water pump and radiator cap with GM parts. I am slow income 80 years old grandma who helps her single daughter who works full time take care of her kids. I need to have a dependable car and I worry that if the computer does like first one did, we will get stranded on the freeway with a completely dead vehicle. Please let me know if there is any help with the expense of making it safe to drive.

I purchased my SUV in February 2014 and have been extremely satisfied with it ever since. Recently, I took it on a road trip from Albuquerque to LA and San Diego with my fiance and future mother-in-law, and it performed exceptionally well. My future mother-in-law, who sat in the back the whole way, even commented on how comfortable it was. The Equinox has a reasonable amount of power, rides smoothly, and can handle light off-roading (although I wouldn't recommend getting too crazy). It also has great cargo space and is an overall fantastic SUV. It's perfect for camping trips to places where the campgrounds aren't all paved over. *Update* It's now June 2016, and I'm still driving and enjoying my Equinox. I've been on another road trip to San Diego, CA (from Albuquerque) as well as to Lubbock, TX. I haven't experienced any real issues, and my mother-in-law still says the back seats are comfortable. The Equinox is great for driving on dirt roads, has done well in snow, has good acceleration, good mileage (on a full tank, I was able to drive from Albuquerque to Flagstaff and still have somewhat more than a quarter tank), and the cargo space is fantastic. I recently moved and was able to fit quite a bit of my furniture in the back. For those wondering, I measured about 6 feet from the tailgate to the front seat (back seat folded down), then about 3 feet high and 3 feet side to side. *Final update* A couple of months ago (days after another road trip to California and back), my pregnant wife and I were driving on the interstate very late at night. Unfortunately, someone in front of us, who was uninsured and driving on a revoked license, had fallen asleep at the wheel, hit the beginning of the guardrail, bending it inward like a paperclip, and flipped his car - a late 90's full-sized SUV. There were no lights, no flares, and I didn't see it until it was too late to react. As a result, I slammed into it, my cruise control still set to 75 mph. My car veered left and to the side after impact, and I remember thinking that rolling was inevitable. Indeed, it was. The Equinox rolled at least once, then landed back on its wheels.Thankfully, my wife and I were able to walk away from the accident. Despite some cuts and bruises, we were both okay. Even our unborn child seems to be developing well, despite some complications. Although the car was from 2008 and may not have had the latest safety features, we are grateful that they did something right to protect us. It was a scary experience, but we are just glad to be okay.

Great vehicle! This SUV has 165,000 miles on it and has had no major issues. The engine and transmission are still going strong. I would definitely purchase another one.

My wife and I purchased the Equinox LT2 AWD used with about 19k miles on it. To ensure peace of mind, we also purchased the additional full warranty through 75k miles coverage, given Chevrolet's hit or miss reliability. Since then, we have put a ton of highway miles on it and it now has 78k miles on it. We are happy to report that we have not encountered any problems so far, except for some paint bubbles from road debris which unfortunately isn't covered. We were surprised to read some negative reviews about the Equinox on this site, but we can only speak from our own experience which has been great. We have had no water inside, no transmission problems, no engine misfiring or anything. We highly recommend it!

After considering the Ford Escape, Edge, and Jeep Liberty, we decided to purchase a 2008 Chevy Equinox LT-2 trim package. Despite my height of 6ft 5 and weight of 285lbs, the Equinox fits me perfectly. On January 24, 2008, we unfortunately put its crash test ratings to the test. I fell asleep at the wheel around noon and hit the guide rails on I-79 with the cruise set at 68. It appears that I hit them head-on, taking out 5 posts, rolling, and sliding down into the grass. Although the car was totaled, we only suffered from sore necks due to the seatbelts. Even the airbags didn't hurt us upon impact! I am convinced that they saved our lives, as there were 5 people in the car, including 3 kids in the back. It's no wonder the Equinox has a 5-star rating!

I can't believe the fuel efficiency of this SUV! With good driving habits, I'm getting 18.5 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway after driving 1000 miles. I was hesitant to purchase an SUV because they are typically gas guzzlers, but this one has the perfect mix of MPG/HP/Torque. It can even tow my 3500lb camper with ease. The ride is just right, not too squishy like a minivan, but not too truck-like either. While the steering takes a few miles to get used to, once you are accustomed to the feel, you will enjoy its light touch and accuracy. The spare tire is stored inside the SUV, keeping it safe from weathering. Although the stereo is a bit flat, it's still acceptable for a factory stereo.

We purchased the car used with 42K miles on it. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the chiller and transmission, which required repairs that took 2 and 3 weeks respectively. While the parts were not immediately available and there were some delays due to them being stuck in Canada, we were fortunate that both repairs were covered under warranty. However, we are concerned about the reliability of the car and are hesitant to purchase another American-made vehicle, particularly from Chevy or GM. We will be exploring other options.

I purchased this car after leaving my previous job, as it was my company car. Unfortunately, 5000 miles later, I experienced a costly repair due to a misfire in the 1st cylinder. Additionally, there seems to be a design or engineering flaw, as the spare tire compartment fills with water every time it rains. This causes the water to slosh forward and soak the back and front seat floors, which is very frustrating. Despite contacting Chevy, they have not initiated a recall for this known issue, nor are they reimbursing for the repair, as they are unsure of the source of the water. As a result, I have to empty the rear storage and use a vacuum every time it rains. It's a real hassle!

I have experienced multiple electronic issues with my sport vehicle, including an engine ticking at 50,000 miles. Despite having the timing chains and tensioners replaced in December 2014, the catalytic converter had to be replaced within a week, followed by the shifter assembly a couple of months later. Currently, I require an ECM, and the timing chains have stretched again. I have been informed that it is unsafe to drive, and GM will not provide a permanent fix. Despite having purchased six GM vehicles, including five from the same dealership, the only compensation offered is 'great rebates' on a new GM product and $3000 for our trouble. I have sought other opinions, and some have questioned the quality of the repair, suggesting that the engine and transmission need to be removed to change the timing chains. I paid out of pocket for the ECM, numerous sensors that have gone bad, and $2,400 to replace the timing chains, now for the second time. Within a week, I broke down and had to be towed back to the dealer, who informed me that there was a lot of gunk in my engine from poor quality oil. Despite having all of my oil changes done at the dealership, they did not call me to advise on the repair process, instead, I received one phone call informing me that it was repaired, and I owed them $889.00! For my next oil change, I went to an independent repair shop, who found that the dealer never removed my dipstick when putting the oil pan back on, which bent the dipstick, and it could not be removed. I then had to pay for that repair and a new dipstick/tube assembly. The dealer has stated that they cannot help me since I had the work done elsewhere. I have decided to no longer purchase any GM products in the future.After being a loyal customer of GM for 30 years, I regret to say that I will not be purchasing another GM vehicle. I have been treated unfairly, lied to, and charged for things that should not have been my responsibility. The recent issues with my vehicle, including stretched timing chains and transmission problems, have only added to my disappointment. After researching and test driving other brands, I have decided to switch to a BMW. Thank you for the memories, GM, but it's time for me to move on.

Everything was going well until I hit about 98K miles. Unfortunately, the ABS and Stabilitrac system began to malfunction. It would work fine for a while, but then the system would show that it needed to be serviced. When this warning is enabled, it doesn't allow you to use the cruise control. Then, it began to start very sluggishly. After doing some research, it looked like all I needed was to replace the fuel filter. The only problem is that the fuel filter is built into the pump, so you have to replace the WHOLE UNIT (About $400). Not long after these things started happening, we had to replace the transmission ($3500). We had a few other repairs a few months later amounting over $1000. Finally, I had enough when my wife called me while I was out of the country, saying that they were broke down on the side of the road. The engine blew a spark plug, and with some research, we found that this is a defect in the way the motor was built. Then, a few months later, the locks began to go haywire, and the seal around the gas tank needed to be replaced due to it breaking down. We finally decided it was time to just cut ties. I would also like to add that any simple repair to be done on these cars is a NIGHTMARE!

I bought my car new in January 2008 and unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues. The motor to the rear windshield wipers stopped working just after the full warranty ran out (about 38000 miles). Additionally, the check engine light has been on since around 50000 miles, with no explanation or solution. The alternator also stopped working after about 60000 miles, but thankfully GM covered the cost after some complaints. Unfortunately, the battery has died several times, after having the radio on for about 15 minutes with the key on accessory. I still owe too much on it to do anything about it, and I don't feel right selling it to someone else and passing off my problems to them. It wouldn't be worth what's owed on it anyway! I'm feeling very discouraged and wish I had stayed with Ford!
