2008 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

Common 2008 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The 2008 Chevrolet Equinox has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the automatic door locks, engine misfires, paint issues, and electrical problems.
- Engine Misfires: Frequent engine misfires, specifically on cylinder 4, have been reported by several owners. This issue may be due to a standing problem with the 2008 Equinox model and may not be related to any specific component failure. Despite proper maintenance, some owners have experienced this issue every 3 months or so.
- Paint Issues: The paint on the roof of the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox has been reported to peel off, affecting the overall appearance of the vehicle. This issue may be due to poor paint quality or adhesion, which can lead to further deterioration over time.
- Head Gasket Failure: Some owners have reported blowing a head gasket, which can be a significant repair expense. This issue may be due to a manufacturing defect or may be related to other engine problems.
- Electrical Issues: Several owners have reported various electrical issues, including the radio continuing to play even after the car is turned off and the driver's side door is opened. This issue may be due to broken wiring in the door A-pillar or other electrical system failures.
- Transmission Faults: Transmission faults and check engine lights are common issues in the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox. These problems may be due to a broken 35R clutch wave plate within the transmission system, leading to symptoms like loss of reverse gear and slipping.
- Defective A/C Compressor: Some owners have reported problems with the A/C system, specifically a defective A/C compressor. This issue may cause symptoms like cold air not blowing and leaking freon, leading to costly repairs.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Equinox models from 2010 to 2013 have reportedly struggled from excessive oil consumption. This issue may be due to a design flaw or manufacturing defect, leading to abnormal amounts of oil consumption and potential engine damage.
- Rattling from the Front Lower Control Arm: Some models of the Equinox, especially the 2005 version, have rattling issues with the front lower control arm. The sound is especially pronounced when driving over bumps, leading to an uncomfortable driving experience.
- Battery Issues: Battery problems are prevalent in various models of the Equinox, with symptoms like spotty Bluetooth audio, defective USB ports, and other electrical system failures. These issues may be due to a faulty battery or other electrical system components.
These common problems with the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox can lead to significant repair expenses and inconvenience for owners. It is essential to address these issues promptly to maintain the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

After considering the Ford Escape, Edge, and Jeep Liberty, we decided to purchase a 2008 Chevy Equinox LT-2 trim package. Despite my height of 6ft 5 and weight of 285lbs, the Equinox fits me perfectly. On January 24, 2008, we unfortunately put its crash test ratings to the test. I fell asleep at the wheel around noon and hit the guide rails on I-79 with the cruise set at 68. It appears that I hit them head-on, taking out 5 posts, rolling, and sliding down into the grass. Although the car was totaled, we only suffered from sore necks due to the seatbelts. Even the airbags didn't hurt us upon impact! I am convinced that they saved our lives, as there were 5 people in the car, including 3 kids in the back. It's no wonder the Equinox has a 5-star rating!

I can't believe the fuel efficiency of this SUV! With good driving habits, I'm getting 18.5 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway after driving 1000 miles. I was hesitant to purchase an SUV because they are typically gas guzzlers, but this one has the perfect mix of MPG/HP/Torque. It can even tow my 3500lb camper with ease. The ride is just right, not too squishy like a minivan, but not too truck-like either. While the steering takes a few miles to get used to, once you are accustomed to the feel, you will enjoy its light touch and accuracy. The spare tire is stored inside the SUV, keeping it safe from weathering. Although the stereo is a bit flat, it's still acceptable for a factory stereo.
-
My wife and I recently purchased this SUV for her daily commute, and she is absolutely thrilled with it. It gets an impressive 21mpg overall and 25mpg on the highway, and the ride is incredibly smooth. The price was also very reasonable, making us happy Chevy customers!
-
In our opinion, this SUV is the perfect purchase for a family. The Equinox has ample power and is ideal for taller or bigger individuals. After almost a year of research, we found this car to be extremely safe, putting our minds at ease. We didn't want to sacrifice room and power for great gas mileage, so we opted for this big truck. Although we regret not going with the LS, the base model has more than enough gadgets and the OnStar is wonderful. As someone who works night shifts and lives in the country, I feel comfortable driving in snowy conditions on back roads after a serious accident about a year ago. With only the FWD, I have never had a problem!
-
This is my second Equinox, and I'm thrilled to say that I love it even more than the first! The AWD is perfect for the winters here, and the gas mileage is impressive for a car of this size, especially one that's considered an SUV/crossover. I'm constantly amazed by how much 'stuff' I can cram into it. The back seats are spacious enough for my long-legged sons to ride comfortably. The only downside is the 'blindspots' in the back corners and front, but overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my Equinox!

I purchased my 2008 Equinox in 2012 as a certified pre-owned vehicle from a reputable dealership with 70,000 miles. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car, including the check engine light coming on almost immediately after purchase. Despite regular maintenance and modest driving, I was recently informed that I need a new engine, among other things. While I had hoped to keep this car for many years to come, I have decided to part ways with it a few months before it is paid off. Although there were some major and minor flaws with this vehicle, I would like to emphasize that I have appreciated the time I have spent with it. However, I would not recommend this model to others due to the issues I have experienced. Some of the issues I have encountered include a poor turn radius, a blinker that gets stuck, door audio cables that came loose early on, power locks that went out soon after purchase, headlight issues that led to frequent bulb replacements, and A/C and heat that do not cool/heat the back seat well. Additionally, I experienced issues with the sun visor screws, dome light, and timing sensor error (which is common in this model). While some of these issues were too costly to fix, I did my best to maintain the car. Unfortunately, the resale value decreased quickly, and I was unable to sell the car without negative equity. Despite these issues, I am grateful for the time I spent with this car and the experiences it provided me.

I purchased my Equinox in 08 and was very happy at first until I had serious issues 6 months after purchase. My Equinox kept bucking and went into the dealer to find out issue was the cylinder misfiring. This was fixed but 6 months later the lock on the drivers side would not work. This too was fixed. 2.5 months later the wipers would not work unless on high speed. Dealer fixed this issue. I was on the highway since I drive 50 miles to work and Equinox again started to buck. Again cylinder was misfiring. Dealer had to replace all wiring. Chevy tried to refuse stating it was due to me not keeping up with maintenance. Not true. I had to prove all the maintenance I had done. Not happy at all.

I strongly disliked this car since I had to drive it in snow the first week I owned it. I made the mistake of buying a FWD instead of an AWD, based on the advice of my salesman who clearly did not have the expertise to advise me properly. As a result, I had a lot of trouble with the car. Unfortunately, my attempts to get some kind of resolution were unsuccessful. I will not be purchasing another car from Superior Chevrolet.
Marcos Sawayn 2024-09-24
I purchased my vehicle 3 months ago with 59,000 miles and have since driven it for an additional 63,000 miles. Recently, the 'service stabilitrack system' warning appeared, which was disappointing. However, I am fortunate that the Toyota dealer I purchased it from is offering to buy it back. I am confident that I will be able to find a more suitable vehicle. In the future, I will be sure to conduct more thorough research before making a purchase.

My car is not even 2 years old yet and I've had a few issues. The front door locks have been problematic and I recently experienced an engine misfire on cylinder #1. Unfortunately, it cost me $143 to replace a spark plug and plug wire. I also noticed water in the driver's side floorboard, but I'm not sure where it's coming from. I haven't checked the spare tire storage area yet, but I plan to after reading some reviews. Additionally, I've had some trouble with the window controls after spilling drinks from the cupholders. Despite these issues, I'm still adjusting to my new car after trading in my Buick Rendezvous. While I miss my Buick, I don't miss the electrical problems I was having with it. However, I'm starting to wonder if I went from bad to worse.
