2005 Chevrolet Equinox problems
The Chevrolet Equinox is a crossover SUV introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. It was intended to be a replacement for the North American Chevrolet Tracker and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The third-generation Equinox also replaced the first-generation Chevrolet Captiva.
An all-electric battery-powered, or BEV version called the Equinox EV was introduced in 2022 with sales starting in 2023 for the 2024 model year. It adopts a separate design and underpinnings from the internal combustion engine powered Equinox.
First generation (2005)
The Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 at the 2003 North American International Auto Show for the 2005 model year.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show for the 2006 model year.
Riding on the GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to the Saturn Vue and the Suzuki XL7. However, the Equinox and the Torrent are larger than the Vue, riding on a 112.5 in (2,858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 in (150 mm) longer than the Vue. Front-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for off-roading unlike the truck-based Chevrolet Tahoe and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, adding GM badges on the front doors, as well as recoloring the dashboard panel from grey to black. For 2007, the instrument cluster got a redesign with a trip computer display, replacing the Saturn-sourced unit.
The first-generation Equinox and Torrent were produced exclusively at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP were available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that was made in the United States.
Production ended in May 2009.
The Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico during the 2009 model year.

- Summary: Upon purchasing the vehicle from a buy here pay here they did not enclose any possible or current failures or problems with the vehicle. It started with the battery and within 2 months of purchase the check engine light came on. I had previously taken the vehicle to the dealership 3 times to assess the issue in which they repeatedly informed me nothing was wrong even though my check engine light was still on. A month later my CV axel went out and my alignment begin to come out of place. I took the vehicle to an auto shop in which they gave me an estimate of all the issues wrong with the car. I have since done repairs for what was necessary. I then began to look for a recall on the vehicle in which I found that there was a manufacturer recall that was I repaired regarding the Safety lock theft prevention. My ignition switch does not register properly when it is in “off mode”. The engine still runs and numerous attempts to stop it have failed. I contacted the dealership and they have not been willing to work with me in any way. I called the manufacturer number and was directed to a Chevrolet dealership near me in which they told me there are no recalls even though the NHTSA.gov website states there is as well as numerous others but that they have not been repaired. When I place my vehicle in the park position and remove the key from the ignition I am still able to move the gear shift into any selected gear, both with and without the normal brake and the emergency brake. I cannot afford to take it to a shop for repair but did take it to be inspected and was informed that this was an issue along with others and that it could be the reason my battery is not holding the power it needs and why I cannot remove my key sometimes as well as why the engine remains running after switching to the off position and removing my key.

My mechanics are telling me this is a common problem with Chevy Equinoxes. If it's common why aren't there recalls. My car only has 80,000 miles on it and my mechanic told me to scrap it. I'm a fabricator and welder. I welded a new frame under it but others can't do that and mechanics say it's a no fix.

I tried to restart, put the truck in the drive, but it wouldn't go like the gas wasn't reaching. So, I turned it off and restarted to see if the lights would go off, but it didn't. I was able to get it home safely. It doesn't take off right away when you gas the pedal. When I stop at the stop sign, it takes a minute before it starts moving again. This is not safe to drive, especially when making a turn, pulling off to traffic. If it doesn't take off in time, it could be an accident due this problem. I hope there's a solution this problem. - Summary: It was recently brought to my attention that the keys can fall out of the ignition with the vehicle running. Which creates an extreme likelihood that the vehicle can move forward or backward without assistance. My keys fall right out of the ignition you should not be able to take the keys out of an ignition with it running or not in park. Has not been confirmed by the dealership yet that’s my next step. And yes it can be reproduced at any time. Sometimes the key will not even start the vehicle. Hi had never reached over and just tried to take the keys out of the ignition to see if they would come out but I recently rented a room where the owner has the exact same car and the same thing happened to him and he had the ignition replaced. This is how I know that it happens because he reached over and was able to pull my keys right out with the vehicle running. I was shocked. Also at one point it says there is automatic transmission recall and mine is making weird movements and jerking motions sometimes not just on my car but on my landlord’s car as well. Maybe that needs to be looked at.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR A PROPERLY FUNCTIONING SHIFT LOCK WHEN THE IGNITION KEY IS REMOVED. DEALERS WILL REPAIR VEHICLES THAT EXHIBIT THE SUBJECT CONDITION. THE RECALL BEGAN AUGUST 17, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438.

I've noticed that there are quite a few complaints about the Equinox. However, I have personally owned one for 7 years now. I bought it with 35,000 miles on it and it now has 156,000 miles. I'm happy to say that I haven't had to do any major maintenance on it until recently when I had to replace the head gasket. I drive almost 700 miles a week and have always been satisfied with its performance and reliability. My wife feels the same way too. I believe that performing regular maintenance at home, such as changing the oil and getting to know your vehicle's sound and handling, can help prevent issues. Overall, I love my Equinox and would not hesitate to buy another one.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2005 Equinox, which I've had since 2008. Overall, I really enjoy driving it! However, I have noticed that the electrical system could use some improvement. I've had some trouble with the lights - the dashboard lights don't work and the driving lights won't come on automatically when turned to auto. Recently, I had to spend over $2000.00 to have the air bag light fixed, and unfortunately, I still won't have dash lights as it would cost another $500.00. I think it would be great if you could work on this issue and perhaps offer some type of refund for these repairs. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I've read all these problems that people have been having, but I haven't experienced any issues yet. The interior looks great with no peeling paint. I suggest getting leather seats to avoid stains. :)

When I purchased this vehicle, I was primarily concerned with fuel efficiency and the dealership was aware of this. I had previously owned a loaded 2004 Z-71 pick up 1/2 ton and was looking for something that could provide me with more than 18mpg. The dealership recommended this Equinox and, after doing my own research, I found that everything they said about it was true. However, I was disappointed to find that the fuel mileage was not as advertised. Since purchasing the vehicle in July, Chevy has updated the fuel sticker from 19 city to 17 city and from 25 hwy to 23 hwy. I typically get around 17 mpg, but when towing a small four-wheeler on a 255-pound trailer, my mileage drops to 12 mpg. If I had known this beforehand, I would have likely stuck with my Z-71. I have reached out to the dealership and Chevy for assistance, but have not received a satisfactory response yet.

I completely agree with you that the 2005 Equinox is one of the best values in Chevrolet's line of vehicles. It's hard to find a better deal for the money!

I purchased this car from my grandfather in 2014 with 64k miles on it. He had taken great care of it, and I was happy to take it off his hands. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the car's starting system. It seems to happen at the most inconvenient times, like when I'm in a dark parking lot or trying to get to work. I have taken it to the shop several times, but the problem never seems to occur when I'm there. I even recorded it with my phone to show my Chevy mechanic. We have tried everything, including putting in a new starter, but the problem persists. I believe it might be an electrical issue. Additionally, the headlights are not the best, and changing them is quite expensive due to the labor involved. The plastic casings have become yellow and foggy-looking, and water has gotten inside, causing the bulbs to blow. I had to pay $120 for the mechanic to remove the front of the car to replace the bulbs. Unfortunately, I cannot afford new casings, which were quoted at $300 a piece. Despite these issues, I still love my car and hope to get it fixed soon.Well, it seems like the water seeps in quite easily and unfortunately, the bumpers are made of cheap plastic that dents easily and can't be reshaped. However, living in California means that rain isn't much of an issue. It's a shame that the bumpers can't be easily replaced and finding a decent one can be a challenge. The window controls being in the center is a bit inconvenient for both the driver and passengers, but it's something that can be gotten used to. The car does have some annoying blind spots, but with time, they can be managed. The door pockets are quite thin, but they can still hold a small stack of napkins. If you're looking for a comfortable ride, it's best to avoid the stock version of this car as the cloth seats can be quite hard and uncomfortable. The lever underneath can also be a bit annoying. It's important to take good care of the car as the interior can start to fall apart after normal usage. For example, the sunvisor's lid that covers the little vanity mirror randomly fell off one day. Overall, it's not a perfect car, but with some adjustments and care, it can still be a reliable mode of transportation.A few months ago, my car started making an electric gurgling sound that graduated into a loud flapping or metal clanking sound. It was so loud and obnoxious that it was embarrassing to drive down the street. Pep Boys said it sounded serious but internal in the engine, so they couldn't help. However, by the time my Chevy appointment came around to diagnose and fix it, the sound had stopped and hasn't been back since. I've honestly had more issues with this car since March 2014 than I ever had with my 2001 Ford F-150 that I had for 7 years, which had 200k miles on it! Bye Felicia!

We recently purchased a used car after trading in our previous vehicle, which we thought was in excellent condition. However, we are now unsure if we made the right decision. While we did spend a lot on repairs for the previous car over the last three years, it was an amazing vehicle that we wouldn't hesitate to drive out of state. On the other hand, we are not so sure about this Equinox. After going to a family dinner and returning home, the entire car was shaking and it sounded like the tires were about to fall off. We have had to take it to the dealer more times than we have had it in our driveway. We purchased it less than a month ago and it has been at the dealer more than it has been at home with us. We are really upset and concerned for our family's safety. We believe that dealers should prioritize the safety of their customers over making a profit.

While there is a large blind spot on the driver's side and gauging rear distances can be difficult, I am capable of navigating these obstacles. Additionally, I have experienced some mechanical issues during my ownership, but I am confident in the vehicle's overall performance and reliability.
