volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common 2008 Volvo Xc90 problems

The Volvo XC90, first produced in 2002, is a mid-size luxury SUV known for its safety and ruggedness

. While generally reliable, certain model years have been reported to have common problems. This article will discuss the common problems with the Volvo XC90, specifically the 2008 model.

Battery Drain

One common problem reported by owners of the 2008 Volvo XC90 is battery drain

. This issue was caused by the radio looking for a satellite signal, even on models that didn't have the option equipped. Volvo later fixed this issue with a recall and software update. However, it's essential to check if the recall and software update have been applied to the vehicle when purchasing a used 2008 XC90.

Wheel Arch Rust and Repair

Another common problem with the 2008 Volvo XC90 is wheel arch rust and repair

. This issue is more prevalent in vehicles that have been driven in areas with salted roads or have been exposed to harsh weather conditions. When inspecting a used 2008 XC90, it's crucial to check the wheel arches for signs of rust and repair. If rust is present, it may indicate that the vehicle has not been properly maintained, which could lead to further issues down the line.

Wheel Bearing Issues

Wheel bearing issues have also been reported in the 2008 Volvo XC90

. This problem can cause a humming or growling noise when driving, especially at higher speeds. If left unaddressed, wheel bearing issues can lead to more severe problems, such as wheel damage or even accidents. When inspecting a used 2008 XC90, it's essential to listen for any unusual noises coming from the wheels and have the vehicle inspected by a professional if any issues are suspected.

Electrical Issues

Electrical issues have been reported in the 2008 Volvo XC90, including problems with the mass air flow sensor and throttle body

. These issues can cause the vehicle to stop pulling normally and increase fuel consumption. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the throttle body and mass air flow sensor, can help prevent these issues. However, if electrical issues are suspected, it's essential to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to ensure that the issue is not more severe.

Gearbox Fault on the 2.9 T6 Engine

The 2.9 T6 engine in the 2008 Volvo XC90 has been reported to have gearbox faults

. This issue can cause rough gear shifts and slipping gears, which can be dangerous when driving. If a 2008 XC90 with the 2.9 T6 engine is being considered, it's crucial to have the vehicle inspected by a professional to ensure that the gearbox is in good working condition.

In conclusion, while the Volvo XC90 is generally a reliable vehicle, certain model years, including the 2008 model, have been reported to have common problems. Battery drain, wheel arch rust and repair, wheel bearing issues, electrical issues, and gearbox faults on the 2.9 T6 engine are some of the common problems reported by owners of the 2008 Volvo XC90. When purchasing a used 2008 XC90, it's essential to inspect the vehicle thoroughly and have it inspected by a professional to ensure that any potential issues are identified and addressed.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-31
  • VIN: YV4CY982181
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: BOUGHT OUR 2008 VOLVO XC90 IN 2010. LAST SPRING WE NOTICED A VERY STRONG FUEL SMELL COMING FROM INSIDE AND OUT SIDE THE VEHICLE THAT BECAME STRONGER THE MORE WE DROVE IT AND FOR SOME TIME AFTER IT WAS PARKED. LOOKED IT UP ON U-TUBE, THE FUEL SENDING UNIT (FUEL PUMP) UNDER THE BACK SEAT LEAKS OVER TIME ESPECIALLY IN HOTTER CLIMATES. THERE WERE SEVERAL DIFFERENT COMPLAINTS ON LINE DUE TO THIS SAME ISSUE, CONCLUDING A DEFECTIVE PART ON THE FUEL PUMP THAT FORMS A CRACK ON TOP AND LEAKS FUEL WHEN VEHICLE IS IN USE.. CALLED VOLVO MAIN OFFICE, GAVE THEM THE VIN # AND THEY SAID "NO, NOT ANY LIST !!" SO WE TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST VOLVO DEALER IN LAS VEGAS, ALL MOST 2 HOURS AWAY. WE ALSO WANTED TO KNOW WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS YELLOW. TURNS OUT THAT IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP AND THEY WOULD GLADLY REPLACE IT FOR $487.00 BUT WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO THE WORK UNTIL OUR NEXT VISIT-HAD TO ORDER THE NEW PUMP. THEY HAD US SIGN A WAIVER BEFORE WE LEFT BECAUSE THEY " RECOMMEND VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVEN DUE TO THIS BEING A SAFETY ISSUE" HAVE MY COPY IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK THE NEXT WEEK AND THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF , WE PAID THE $487.00 AND THEY GAVE US A WARRANTY ON THE NEW FUEL PUMP FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR . THEY WERE VERY NICE AND PROFESSIONAL. MY QUESTION IS WHY DID WE HAVE TO PAY $480. 00 FOR A PART THAT WAS FAULTY?

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-11
  • VIN: YV4CZ982981
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND MY VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND THE STEERING LOCKED. I WAS ABLE TO PUT ON THE EMERGENCY SIGNALS AND THE BIG RIGS BEHIND ME BLEW THEIR HORNS. THEY WERE GETTING CLOSER TO ME BECAUSE I WAS DECELERATING AT A RATE THAT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A COLISSION. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO COAST INTO AN EMERGENCY LANE WHILE THEY WENT WHIPPING PAST ME. THE VOLVO SERVICE MANAGER STATED THAT HE HAD HEARD OF A SIMILAR SITUATION BEFORE. IN AN EMAIL TO ME HE STATED THAT "THE PRESSURE SENSOR WAS GIVING A FAULTS READING, OF EXCESSIVE FUEL PRESSURE. WHEN THE PEM SAW THE FAULTS READING, IT CUT THE FUEL TO THE ENGINE AS IT THOUGHT IT WAS WAY OVER PRESSURIZED." I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT NOBODY WAS SEVERALLY INJURED OR KILLED.

I BARELY MADE IT HOME, GOING OVER A SMALL HILL WAS A STRUGGLE. MIND YOU, THIS HAPPENED AT NIGHT AND I WAS SCARED TO DEATH THAT I WAS GOING TO BE STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH MY CHILD. I HAVE READ ON FORUMS THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO OTHER CUSTOMERS AND VOLVO CURRENTLY HAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR ETM AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. WHEN I ENTERED MY VIN ON THE VOLVO SITE NOTHING CAME UP. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-30
  • VIN: YV4CN982X81
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 10/30/2013...FAILED IGNITION LOCK SWITCH AT 31769 MILES, IN GARAGE, NO WARNING RESULTING IN HAVING TO HAVE VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, PART INVESTIGATED ORDERED AND ULTIMATELY REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER 600$ AS WELL AS THE COST OF A RENTAL VEHICLE FOR A WEEK BECAUSE PART NEEDED TO BE ORDERED AND SHIPPED TO DEALER. ADDITIONAL RENTAL COST AT JUST OVER 200$. FOLLOWED BY STARTER SWITCH BEHIND THE IGNITION LOCK SWITCH FAILING ON 4/08/2014 DIAGNOSED AT DEALERSHIP, PART NEEDING TO BE ORDERED AND THEN INSTALLED 4/22/2014. A COST OF 165$, MILEAGE AT THIS REPLACEMENT WAS 34332. AFTER WHICH I CONTACTED THE VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE DEPARTMENT AND SENT ALL REQUIRED INFORMATION TO SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE/ PART. I WAS INFORMED IT WAS NOT A RECALL ITEM. THEY ALSO SAID THAT ON A VEHICLE THAT AGE AN MILEAGE I SHOULD EXPECT SOME MAINTENANCE ISSUES. I KEEP MY VEHICLE MAINTAINED AND CHECKED ON A REGULAR BASIS. HAVING SPOKEN TO THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND AN VEHICLE MECHANIC THAT HAS 2 VOLVOS THEY BOTH SAID THEY HAVE PERSONALLY HAD THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE IGNITION LOCK SWITCH, ONCE WHEN DRIVING. VOLVO OFFERED TO REIMBURSE ME UP TO 30% OF COST OF PART/S UP TO 200$. I NEEDED TO SEND IN DOCUMENTATION AND COPIES OF WORK COMPLETED. MY CONCERN IS THAT IN LIGHT OF THE IGNITION ISSUES WITH GM THAT HAVE BEEN ONGOING FOR 5 YEARS...IS THIS THE SAME THING JUST NOT IDENTIFIED AS OF YET AND IF THE VOLVO CORPORATION DOES REIMBURSE A PORTION OF MY OUTPUT TO FIX THE IGNITION CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT THAT WILL LEAD THEM TO NOT ALLOW ANY RIGHTS TO OWNERS IF THIS BECOMES A RECALL/ LEGAL ISSUE? *TR

ACCORDING TO A NUMBER OF VOLVO DEALER SERVICE ADVISORS, THIS VIBRATION/SHAKING HAS BEEN A 'MAJOR ISSUE' CAUSED BY FAILING RIGHT SIDE FRONT AXLES (350.00) &/OR FAILING TRANSMISSION VALVE BODIES ($3500.00). GIVEN THAT THIS APPEARS TO BE A MAJOR MECHANICAL FLAW ACCORDING TO VOLVO DEALER SERVICE, WHY HASN'T THESE DANGEROUS DRIVE TRAIN ISSUES BEEN ADDRESSED AS A MANDATORY RECALL?? *TR

  • Summary: MICHELIN CROSS TERRAIN WITH < 39K MILES ON 2008 VOLVO XC90 HAD A TREAD SEPARATION AT INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SPEED DURING BUSY DOWNTOWN TRAFFIC NEARLY CREATING AN ACCIDENT FOR ME AND TWO OF MY CHILDREN. VEHICLE DAMAGE CAUSED SOLELY BY THE TIRE FLAILING THE RIGHT REAR OF MY VEHICLE EXCEEDED $3500. TREAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE STEEL BELTS AS A CONTINUOUS RING. TREAD LUGS CAN BE PULLED AWAY BY HAND FROM THE LOWER RUBBER THEY APPEAR TO BE BONDED TO AND THIS UNDERNEATH RING OF RUBBER HAD VERY CLEANLY PULLED AWAY FROM THE BELTS. TIRE REMAINED INFLATED. EVIDENCE OF IMPENDING FAILURE WAS NOTED AS I WAS FEELING VIBRATION FROM THE TIRE FOR 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND HAD EVEN STOPPED TO INSPECT THE WHEEL FOR A PROBABLE CAUSE. PHOTO DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE. INTERNET SEARCHING IS CLEARLY SHOWING THAT, FOR THIS MODEL TIRE, THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE. EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-04-14
  • Components: EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE OF THE RECALL VARIETY. I BROUGHT MY 2008 XC90 TO THE DEALER TODAY FOR ANOTHER ISSUE. I SAT IN THE WAITING ROOM FOR 30 MIN WHEN THE SERVICE MAN APPROACHED ME AND ASKED ME IF MY IGNITION HAD EVER LOCKED UP BEFORE. I SAID NO AND TRIED TO TURN THE KEY MYSELF. COMPLETELY LOCKED. THE SERVICE REP SAID "I KNOW WHAT IT IS" AS HIS WIFE IN HER VOLVO HAD RECENTLY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. HE EXPLAINED THE IGNITION HAS A LOCKING MECHANISM THAT SOMETIMES FREEZES IN PLACE. THE COLUMN NEEDS TO BE DISSEMBLED TO REMOVE THE MECHANISM. HE TOLD ME 5-7 BIZ DAYS TO GET THE FACTORY TO CUSTOM BUILD ME A NEW ONE BEFORE HE CAN DRIVE THE CAR TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM I ORIGINALLY CAME IN FOR. THEY WON'T GIVE ME A LOANER OR RENT ME A CAR DESPITE THE FACT THAT THIS ISSUE IS "UNDER WARRANTY." I'M VERY DISENCHANTED WITH VOLVO AS, GIVEN THAT THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED IN VOLVOS TIME AND TIME AGAIN ACCORDING TO MANY BLOG ENTRIES I REVIEWED.! *TR

Negative 2008 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

If you're considering purchasing a 2008 Volvo XC90 V8, it's important to note that the alternators on these models have been known to fail. It may be worth looking into whether the alternator has been replaced before making a decision. Additionally, there are many other vehicles in this class that offer better reliability, comfort, safety, and sportiness at a more affordable price point. However, if you're interested in purchasing mine, please let me know. It's worth noting that this vehicle has been known to experience power loss at highway speeds, which could potentially leave you stranded.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the XC90. It sounds like you've had a frustrating time with the car, especially with the overheating issue. It's understandable that you would want to switch back to the MDX, especially since you've had such a positive experience with Acuras and Infinities in the past. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

The SUV's mileage was disappointing, averaging only 13.6 MPG over 2 years. Additionally, we encountered several issues with the vehicle, including a loose front end and side frame supports that required adjustments. The tires also needed to be replaced after only 20K miles, without any warranty coverage. However, I must acknowledge that the dealer provided excellent service throughout the process, despite needing 4 attempts to fix one of the main issues.

I've always dreamed of owning a Volvo XC90 and was thrilled when I finally bought one. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car shortly after delivery and had to have it towed to the dealership. While it was disappointing to have to deal with these problems so early on, I'm hopeful that everything will be resolved soon. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and have even read up on my state's Lemon Law just in case. Overall, I really like this car and am looking forward to enjoying it for years to come!

The XC-90 has not met our expectations as a family car. It has had several issues, including AC problems, alignment issues, and mechanical and electronic problems. At one point, both front axles had to be replaced. While it has good overall safety ratings, it has poor traction control in rainy conditions. If you do decide to purchase, it is recommended to buy the AWD.

Positive 2008 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

My family has been loyal to Volvo since 1981, so it was an easy decision to choose the XC90. The interior, while a bit snug, is typical of Volvo's high-quality craftsmanship. Unlike some other SUVs, all seats are strong and comfortable, not just the front ones.

  2. Hayley Crooks 2024-11-08

Volvo offers a lot of features in their packages at a much lower price point compared to other European manufacturers. The car is durable and after 10 years, there is not a speck of rust. The interior still looks stunning and the stereo system is fantastic. The newer models, such as the XC 90 we recently purchased, are even better and more modern. They offer great performance in terms of engine power and handling, comparable to their competitors. In my opinion, Volvo provides the best value for your money, without mentioning any specific German competitors.

At 89,000 miles, we had to replace the 'clock spring' device located under the passenger seat, but thankfully it was covered by warranty. Currently, we need to replace the tire pressure sensors as the dashboard light is on, even though the tire pressure is fine. We purchased this vehicle sight-unseen as a replacement for our wrecked Cadillac SRX. We are extremely satisfied with the Volvo XC90, especially when compared to the Caddy which had a tendency to use oil. The Volvo requires no added oil between changes and has better fuel mileage. The only minor criticism we have is that the turning radius of the XC90 is greater than our previous 2000 XC 70, which makes it a bit harder to park in tight spaces. However, this is something we can live with. We have had no major issues with the car, and it is still tight and rattle-free even after 116,000 miles. The tires have worn down evenly, and we will probably stick with the brand that came with the car. We know we will have to replace the tire pressure sensors, but that is a minor issue. Unfortunately, we have a leak in the window washer line to the tailgate, which is difficult to repair. We are currently searching for a solution.

I recently traded in my '06 BMW M3 convertible for this SUV due to the need for more space for our new baby. Although my rating is slightly lower on performance and fun to drive, I am still having a little separation anxiety as I find myself comparing it to the M3, which is a totally different vehicle. However, I do love this SUV. After doing my research, I found that this was the best bang for the buck and it truly is. As a previous German car owner, I had vowed to never buy anything else, but Volvo won me over! The Volvo XC90 is absolutely fantastic!

I chose Volvo for its safety features and built-in booster seat for my toddler, as well as the luxurious amenities and great 2-year lease deal. While I considered the Mercedes M class, I found the ride and comfort to be the worst of any SUV I've driven, which was surprising. Despite test driving the M-B three times, it didn't meet my needs. The Acura MDX was more luxurious and had better features and reliability, but the lease deals were poor. The only deal offered was for a stripped-down MDX, and adding options was costly. The BMW X5 was too small and had clunky doors, which my wife didn't like. It felt like a man's car. The Lexus RX was wonderful, but too small for our needs. Although Volvo has had some reliability issues, it has the best safety record. I opted for a 2-year lease because I didn't want to be stuck with a mistake for 3 years.
