volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-03
  • VIN: YV4CZ852471
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: THE ISSUE FIRST STARTED ON MA 3RD, 2019. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY ON MY WAY TO THE BEACH. THE ROAD WAS A LITTLE BUMPY AND THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN MY CAR LOST ALL POWER AND SHUT ITSELF OFF. IT THROUGH 3 CODES, 1. IMMOBILIZER, 2. ENGINE CONTROL MODULE AND 3. CLIMATE CONTROL MODULE. I WAS ABLE TO HAVE IT TOWED HOME. MY HUSBAND DECIDED TO RESEARCH WHAT COULD CAUSE THESE ISSUES. HE LOCATED A YOUTUBE VIDEO THAT WAS POSTED 2 YEARS AGO REGARDING THE ECM & CCM FUSES. THE MAN RECORDING THE VIDEO EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS, AND FOUND THAT THE FUSE FOR THE TWO ITEMS HAVE BLOWN. MY HUSBAND THOUGHT MAYBE THAT MIGHT BE THE ISSUE. HE LOCATED THE FUSES AND FOUND THAT BOTH OF THEM WERE IN FACT BLOWN. HE REPLACED THEM BOTH WITH BRAND NEW FUZES AND THE CAR STARTED RIGHT NOW.. THE NEXT DAY, I DROVE TO WORK WITH NO ISSUES AND TO AND FROM LUNCH. ON MY WAY HOME, ABOUT 3 MILES FROM WORK, I WENT DOWN A SIDE STREET AS THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT AND TRAFFIC WAS BACKED UP. THE SIDE STREET HAD SPEED BUMPS. THE WENT OVER THE FIRST ONE WITH NO ISSUE, AND THE NEXT ONE IS ABOUT 100 - 200 FEET AFTER, AS SOON AS MY BACK TIRES WERE OVER THE 2ND BUMP, THE CAR SHUT IT SELF OFF AGAIN AND I WAS STUCK (MAY 6TH 2019). MY HUSBAND SHOWN MY WHERE THE FUZES WAS AND LEFT EXTRAS IN THE STORAGE AREA ON THE SAFE SIDE. AGAIN, BOTH WERE BLOWN. ONCE THEY WERE REPLACED FOR A 2ND TIME, CAR STARTED. NOW FAST FORWARD 5 MONTHS, THE ROAD FROM MY DADS HOUSE IS BEING REPAVED, AS YOU CAN IMAGE VERY BUMPY. I MADE IT OVER ALL THE BUMPS JUST FINE, BUT AS SOON AS I CROSSED OVER A MAJOR ROAD, THE CAR SHUT ITSELF OFF AGAIN... THIS TIME I DID NOT HAVE EXTRA FUZES, CALLED A TOW (OCTOBER 11 2019). WE WERE ABLE TO REPLACE THE FUZES AGAIN. NOW THE NEXT DAY EVERYTHING WAS FINE AGAIN, BUT THE SAME THING HAPPENED TWO MORE TIMES (OCTOBER 12, 2019). AND NOW THE CAR SITS IN MY DRIVEWAY, AS I FEEL VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE IT.

B)CONTACTED NORTH TOWN VOLVO DEALER FOR ADVICE. RESPONSE WAS TO GET THE VEHICLE IN BY TOWING. NO ADVICE AS TO HOW TO DISENGAGE THE VOLVO'S PARK FEATURE. C)CONTACTED VOLVO'S ON LINE CHAT SERVICE AND RECEIVED THE SAME RESPONSE. NO HELP! GET THE CAR TOWED IN! D)CONTACTED IN COLLISION AND AUTO REPAIR. THEY SUGGESTED A 2006 YOU TUBE VIDEO SHOWING HOW TO DISENGAGE THE PARK FUNCTION. THIS WORKED AND THE VOLVO 2007 XC-90 WAS TOWED TO IN COLLISION AND AUTO REPAIR. IT TOOK THREE WEEKS TO REPAIR THE LOCK FOR THE PARTS HAD TO COME FROM GERMANY. PICTURES OF THE FAILED LOCK ASSEMBLY ARE ENCLOSED. AFTER THE LOCK REPAIR, IN COLLISION PERFORMED THE FOLLOWING: A)REPLACED RADIATOR: THE RADIATOR HAD A SMALL LEAK SINCE THE GET-GO. BROUGHT THE VOLVO IN SEVERAL TIMES TO NORTH TOWN VOLVO AND THEY COULD NOT FIND IT. DURING A VISIT TO THEM THE COOLANT WAS TOPPED OFF AT NO CHARGE AND I APPARENTLY OBSERVED, BUT IT WAS DENIED BY THE SERVICE ADVISOR, THE SERVICE ADVISOR DROPPING SOMETHING INTO THE COOLANT EXPANSION TANK. COMPARED TO THE NEW COOLANT AFTER RADIATOR REPLACEMENT, IT IS MUCH CLEARER WITHOUT THE DARKEN FLAKEY CONSISTENCY OF THE PREVIOUS COOLANT OF WHICH WAS LIKE THAT SINCE THE GET-GO. B)REPLACED HVAC BLOWER MOTOR DUE TO FAILURE. C)CLEANED UP DRIVER SIDE DOOR SECURITY CONTACTS SO THAT THE POWER DOOR LOCKS LOCK WHEN THE ALARM IS TOGGLED.

VERY UNSAFE!!! I'M VERY UPSET TO READ THAT THIS IS A KNOWN COMPLAINT AND VOLVO HAS NOT ADDRESSED THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS TURNED OFF IN THE DARK, I HAD BOTH OF MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR WITH ME. Negative 2007 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Ethel Miller 2024-10-04

My wife and I bought our 2007 XC90 3.2 in April of 07. Although the build quality of this vehicle and design of the XC90 looks good, we have experienced multiple problems that should not have occurred in a vehicle in this price range. These include a chronic rattle (5 weeks in the shop), a defective DVD entertainment system (which almost caused a fire), an improper oil change (1 1/2 quart low), and a stress cracked windshield/improperly installed from the factory (which took an act of God to get Volvo to take responsibility for). We had a difficult experience with the dealership we worked with, and therefore, we would not recommend Volvo.

Since purchasing my 2007 Volvo, I have experienced several issues including problems with the belt, brakes, rotors, coolant recipient, and oil leaks. Today, the transmission service urgent light has come on, which is concerning. Despite these challenges, I am confident in finding a solution to these problems. I will seek the advice of a trusted mechanic or dealer to address these issues and ensure that my car reaches its expected lifespan of 300,000 miles.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my Volvo since purchasing it. Unfortunately, I have had to bring it into the shop multiple times due to squeaks and rattles that have yet to be resolved. Additionally, I have experienced issues with three separate car systems. As a result, I am feeling quite frustrated and disappointed with my purchase. At this time, I would recommend avoiding purchasing a Volvo until they have documented improvements in their quality control.

The 2007 Volvo XC90 with the 3.2 6 cylinder motor may have some issues with sluggishness when taking off from a stop sign or light. Additionally, it may not handle as well as some other sport utility vehicles. However, it is important to note that these are common issues with this model and can be addressed with proper maintenance and upgrades.

  5. Adolph Rempel 2024-06-21

Our 2007 XC90 has been a major disappointment. Despite our high hopes for the new model, it has been plagued with issues from the very beginning. We have had to take it to the shop for almost 7 weeks in the first 18 months of ownership, and it has required significant repairs, including the replacement of both front axle shafts and power steering issues. Even now, the car still has a rough ride and is excessively loud. While the car looks nice, we are relieved that we only have a two-year lease. Despite Volvo's attempts to fix the issues and the pleasant dealerships, we have lost faith in this model.

Positive 2007 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your first experience with Volvo! The XC90 V8 is definitely an impressive and fun car to drive, and I completely agree that the exterior styling is far superior to its competitors. While it's unfortunate that you've experienced some issues with rattling noises and front dash crackles during temperature changes, I'm glad to hear that these are common issues that can be resolved. It's great to hear that you love your XC90 and have found a reliable luxury SUV that meets your needs!

  2. Reed Ankunding 2024-11-10

I'm glad to hear that you've been enjoying your wagon for the past 45 days! It's great to hear that you've put 3,000 miles on it with no problems. While the V8 engine may have taken some getting used to, it sounds like the power is there when you need it. It's true that a 5,000 pound vehicle may not have the best gas mileage, but it's good to hear that the design, fit, and finish are unmatched. It's impressive that this is your 3rd Volvo purchase, and if the quality and design continue, it's no surprise that you can see yourself being a lifelong fan!

  3. Lamar Nikolaus 2024-11-05

The Cayenne is an exceptional vehicle that boasts quality construction, great reliability, excellent acceleration, and an eye-catching design. Its exterior design is unparalleled, with no other vehicle coming close. While the stereo sound quality could be improved to add more richness and depth, the interior functionality is genius. The design of the seats, storage, cupholders, and tailgate is spartan in an exquisite sort of way, with no wasted electronic frills. The paint quality is superior, and the braking exceeds expectations. Overall, the Cayenne lives up to the Volvo name and tradition.

  4. Ken Lowe 2024-09-11

My wife is a huge fan of Volvo and recently purchased the XC90 3.2 FWD base model, despite my initial hesitation. I had considered a Kia Sedona, but ultimately decided against it due to concerns about its fuel efficiency. While I still prefer my 2004 V70 base model, which gets an impressive 30 to 35 mpg on the highway at 70 to 80 mph, the XC90 has proven to be a reliable and efficient choice for longer trips, achieving between 22 and 26 mpg. In town, the fuel economy is not as high, averaging around 15 mpg, but overall we have been satisfied with its performance, achieving a total fuel economy of 19 mpg over the first 12,000 miles.

  5. Lawrence Howe 2024-08-17

I'm glad to hear that you are overall satisfied with your car. It seems to compare well with other imported SUVs on many levels, and is more reasonably priced than many of them. The cargo room it provides is quite good. However, it's worth noting that the 2nd row seating can be tight front and aft when the third row option is installed. Additionally, Volvo's maintenance plan is quite skimpy compared to others, with just the first service being free. In terms of gas mileage, it seems that you've tried your best but never managed to get more than 17mpg. If you're looking for something quicker with better mileage, a BMW X3 might be a good option. As for reliability, it's unfortunate to hear that the shift lever has trouble leaving park on cold days, even after a fix. Finally, there have been some problems with 4wd engagement that led to a recall, and it's still annoying that yours still spins through in FWD on even slightly wet surfaces.
