I test all the luxury SUV’s and my favorite is the XC90 T6 inscription. As a former BMW and Audi owner, I have experienced many service and mechanical issues. However, I am now appreciating the higher quality, safety, and technology in my Volvo.

I've owned three XC-90's so far - two T-6's and now the 2022 T-8 Inscription Recharge. While the interiors are essentially the same, the T-8 has a crystal shift knob and all the sound systems are excellent. I had a loaner with the upgraded sound system, but in my opinion, it's not worth the extra $$. Let's talk about the recharge hybrid functions that you may not fully understand just by taking a test drive. I've driven mine for 20K miles, so I have a lot of experience with it. The charging cable can be plugged into a regular 110v outlet in your garage with the adapter that comes with the cable, and it takes about 7 hours to fully charge. If you have a 220v connection installed, you can use the other adapter it comes with, and it charges in about 3 hours. A single charge is good for 20 miles, which is decent, but in my opinion, 30-40 miles would be ideal. The hybrid mode varies the engine between electric (under 70 mph) and gas when you have charge left, otherwise, it's all gas all the time. There is substantial lag when you want/need to accelerate quickly in hybrid mode from a standing stop, about half a second. I should point out that the T-8 is not AWD all the time like the T-6, but you can select AWD in the menu. The vehicle apparently reserves some of the charge for AWD as the rear engine (rear-wheel drive) is electric. To date, I have never needed AWD even in the snow. Where is the 400 HP you may be wondering? Well, if you change the drive mode from hybrid to sport, now you get the full brunt of the 400 HP engine all the time. However, if you really stomp on it in sport mode, the car takes off like a shot, but with borderline dangerous torque steer! So, hang on to that steering wheel!The XC-90 Recharge is a great vehicle, period. It has two modes for shifting into gear: 'D' for drive and 'B' for battery. If you use 'B' as you should, it charges the battery using your braking and the engine braking a little bit, which is something. On average, I get about 29 MPG, but since I don't have access to a charging station at work, I could be getting way more than that. In my opinion, the best way to drive/manage the vehicle's performance (not gas mileage) is to run the vehicle in hybrid mode on local roads. It won't take much to run out the battery. I drive a big portion of my daily drive on the highway where the 400 HP is more of a necessity. So, I switch to sport mode when entering the highway and switch back to hybrid when I'm back to local. The XC-90 has a bunch of other features like reserve charge, etc., which are too much to go into here. Would I get another one? Given the current fuel prices, probably yes. However, the hybrid functionality could use some work. The torque steer is a real issue if you drive aggressively, even occasionally, and the battery life needs improvement. But that's just my opinion.

As a car enthusiast and engineer working in the auto industry (although not for Volvo directly), I recently purchased a 2021 S60 and was so impressed that I also got an XC90 T5 for my wife. Over the past 30 years, we have owned various brands including Nissan, Infiniti, Honda, VW, BMW, and Cadillac, and have had no complaints about any of them. However, the history of Volvo's engines led me to choose the T5 trim for both our S60 and XC90. While there were some issues with premature engine rebuilds due to excessive oil burning in the early T5 engines from 2015-2018, these issues have been addressed with new piston rings and the new T5/T6 engines are usually flawless (except for some premature supercharger failures on the T6). I prefer the T5 (2023 mild hybrid and called B5) because it is a simpler engine design that has been in production for about 10 years now. Neither of our Volvos consume any appreciable amount of oil between oil changes. The T5 feels peppy enough as long as you're not driving a loaded car all the time. I recommend avoiding the Recharge (T8) due to numerous issues. The ride in the XC90 is great with no appreciable wind noise, and it is definitely the most solid car we have ever owned. The S60 is also very sturdy. Volvo has a ton of engineering safety features (real tangible things, not gimmicks) that are very unique and give them an advantage over every other brand. This was the main reason I bought my first Volvo. We usually keep cars for many years and so far it looks like these will be no exception. We have had no issues at all with either of our Volvos, just oil changes. It's important to note that the trim level matters, and the Recharge is a very complex car with new technology that works well but is not reliable. This applies to any other premium plug-in hybrid.Just be prepared to handle those issues and don't expect a vehicle with so much software and electronics to be as reliable as a pure gas car. I must say, the build quality is amazing. If you're a car enthusiast and work on them, you'll immediately notice that with Volvos. When you look under the car, it's a work of art. The organization of the components and quality of the build is second to none. The extensive use of aluminum is another indication that this car is definitely a premium vehicle.

I recently traded in my 2021 XC90 T8 for a 2024 T8 and I must say, it's even better than the previous model! All the little quirks have been ironed out and the charging pad that I previously complained about is no longer an issue. The navigation has been replaced with Google Maps, which is a great improvement. The dashboard has been upgraded and the touch screen is now much easier to use. The XC90 was already a very comfortable and fast car, but the battery now has almost double the range, which is over 36 miles! The Bowers Wilkins sound system has also been upgraded and it sounds amazing. After looking at all the cars in this class, I can confidently say that the XC90 is currently the best three row SUV to choose.

This is a lovely vehicle in many ways. My wife and I had to choose between the T8 and a Mercedes GLE450, and we ultimately went with the Mercedes. While we didn't need the XC90's third row and weren't fans of the cargo space floor with the seats down, we could have made do. Although we found the Mercedes to be more powerful, we could have been content with the T8's power. While we preferred Mercedes' interactive tech, we could have been satisfied with Volvo's. However, the deciding factor for us was the sun visor! Volvo's sun visor is small, cheap, and doesn't telescope, and that was a dealbreaker for us.

If you're willing to recognize that 5 star reviews tend to be emotional and overhyped, you can then focus on objective feedback. This luxury SUV is very nice, made with lots of attention to detail and perfection, especially with the inscription package. The soft leather is great, and the handling is excellent. The power train is very clever and surprisingly spacious in the 2nd row, although the 3rd row is for kids only. The car is very 'soft footed' - it seems to want to roll down the road with a very sensitive, yet smooth power train. The AWD handles very well, on par with other performance cars. The MPGs are not bad for the weight of the car and the fact that there are 316 horses under the hood. It is worth noting that the insurance rates for this car are decent, at least as of July 2022. Now, with the praises aside, there are some areas where the car could be improved. For example, Volvo in all their wisdom does not allow you to start your car remotely unless you pay for their smartphone app. A 20K Honda allows you to precool or preheat your car, but Volvo will want you to pay extra to do the same. Additionally, the car software is far from smart. It does not store your driving profile (eco, dynamic, etc.) and resets it on every start, even though it manages to store every other aspect of your settings. It is bloated with garbage values that are tied to subscription such as weather etc that comes from Sirius XM. If you don't care to renew the subscription, you'll be left with many display items on the main screen that don't do much. Lastly, the car does not come with a printed manual. The online manual is a joke, and who the heck has the time to sit and try to figure out the manual uploaded into the center console? There is no such thing as a PDF you can print or use to learn about your car's features. You can order one for 55 bucks, but they seem to be 'out of stock for a while'. For a 70K car to not come with a manual -- that's a joke, it has to be.Last time I checked, even the most basic cars come with a printed reference manual, especially since there are many features on the car. Unfortunately, the online support from Volvo for this car is extremely disorganized. It can be difficult to determine which features and support apply to your car, as there is a division between 'early' and 'late' 2022 models. However, the website shows completely different configurations for the 2022 model than what you will find on the lot. Additionally, the 360 camera and rear view camera always start in the same view, with no way to default it to your preferred view for parking assistance. The FOBs button placement is also baffling and can be difficult to operate. The lane keeping 'pilot' can put your car too close to the left side of the lane, which can be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous. The sunroof switch controls both the shade and the sunroof, which can be a bit primitive and confusing. Furthermore, the car only allows for two profiles, which can be inconvenient for families with a third driver who has their own preferences. Lastly, there is limited storage space for small items such as sunglasses and coins. Despite these issues, we hope you will still enjoy your Volvo experience!This car does not have any coin slots due to the national coin shortage. Additionally, the steering wheel tilt and telescoping feature is manual and will not be stored with your driver profile. If you're test driving the car, it's important to pay attention to the road and wind noise. Volvo is transitioning to an electric company, which may affect parts availability for their gas models in the future. If you're considering a gas model, it's worth considering the direction of the company and how it may impact your resale or maintenance costs. While the resale value of this car is mediocre, it's important to keep in mind that this is true for most cars in this class. During your test drive, pay attention to these factors and decide if they will impact your overall satisfaction with the car. For me, I don't feel that the value is quite there, but it's still a solid option to consider.

I have been driving my '23 XC90 Ultimate for just over a month and have encountered some issues. The blind spot monitor does not always light up when it should and sometimes gets stuck. Additionally, there is a squeaky noise when the brake pedal is released, despite service attempts to fix it. Another inconvenience is that Volvo is not set up with 'Replay' for XM stations, which can be frustrating when trying to catch up on a conversation. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the help of the dealership. I have owned several other car brands in the past, but I am still impressed with the overall quality of the XC90. I am looking forward to addressing these minor concerns and enjoying my Volvo for years to come.

Our 2018 Inscription is back in the shop for its 3rd Air Conditioner repair. This one is not even covered by warranty because the warranty lapsed last month while it was in the shop for the 2nd AC repair, and the dealership won't stand behind its work. On Saturday, the key fobs stopped working. Our local Volvo dealer, Bergeron Volvo, has a terrible Service Dept., and is backed up for weeks. They never have loaners available. We've owned Mercedes, Acura, Porsche, Tesla and Infiniti, and Volvo is the worst.

6 month update: Volvo took a minimalist approach to their new (mid 2023) infotainment that we’re finding a bit frustrating, which took away some worthwhile customization options. First to note, we had a 2020 R design and this is the inscription. Although we miss the R design, we understand that not everyone is looking for a sporty looking 7 seater Volvo. However, we do have some feedback on the user experience. The sound system has only 3 selections on sound customization and no ability to balance the sound, only to select forward, back or middle. Unfortunately, in the middle option, barely any sound comes out of the back speakers (middle row), which is a big design flaw. We took it to the dealer and confirmed this is the same in other cars. Our salesperson was surprised also when we confirmed it. A couple of other salespeople were there and also were surprised, but clearly tried to downplay it. It’s very noticeable and even more frustrating when it’s a good set of speakers which we’re paying for, and there is no way to mitigate this. Additionally, they took away drive modes, so except for a box to check for steering feel (firm or soft) there’s nothing. Lastly, when a sensor goes off because something is close to the car, it immediately goes to a 360 view. This means that every time a pedestrian walks in front of your car close by (which happens a lot in the city) it goes to that view and starts beeping. Unfortunately, there is no way to turn it off. So if you are trying to look at your directions at a red light, and people are walking in front of your car, it switches screens and you can’t see your next turn. It gets annoying quickly.In our previous car, we had the option to choose the interior lighting color, which we found cool and added a level of fun and luxury that we appreciated, especially at this price point. However, in this car, there are no options and only white lighting is available. While using the infotainment system, we found that Waze is finicky at best and we end up using Apple CarPlay instead. Additionally, media/song information cannot be seen while using any navigation app. Although the car is good overall, we are frustrated with the infotainment system, especially compared to our 2020 model. It feels like a downgrade with these missing important features. We also find that this car lacks the steering feel of our 2020 model, but we understand that it's not the R design. Despite this, we admit that the engine is better in the B6 and our mileage is fantastic. As Volvo enthusiasts, we appreciate the more subdued image compared to German rivals and the level of safety that Volvo provides. However, we will need to see if these changes are fixed or if we need to shop elsewhere before renewing our lease.

I recently purchased a Volvo XC 90 for my wife, as safety was a top priority for us. Initially, we were pleased with the car, but unfortunately, we encountered some issues. Despite Volvo offering oil changes every 10K miles, I felt that was too long and decided to change the oil myself at 6K miles. However, I discovered that the oil level was low and was missing almost 2 quarts of oil for a 5 quart engine. Additionally, we had a 'Volvo on call, service required' message on the dash, which was concerning. When I took the car to the dealer, I was disappointed to learn that they were booked for the next 10-14 days. As we only have one car, this was a major inconvenience. We ultimately decided to trade in the Volvo for a Hyundai Palisade, which has been a much better SUV for us. While I was aware of Volvo's poor resale value and the fact that they are owned by Geely, a Chinese company, I was still disappointed with the issues we experienced. I hope that Volvo can address these problems in the future.
