2022 Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Negative 2022 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

  1. Norbert Treutel 2024-11-16

I've had two BMW X5s in the past, both of which were well-equipped with features such as ventilated seats, heads up display, and adaptive cruise control. I recently purchased the XC90 T8, which comes with all of these features at the same price point as a new X5. However, I have noticed some differences in performance. For example, when I set the cruise control at 70 mph, the car tends to fluctuate between 67-72 mph. Additionally, the speed can only be adjusted in 5 mph increments. I also had some trouble with my Kuat bike rack not aligning with the holes in the factory hitch, but I was able to solve this issue with an extender. Unfortunately, the wireless charging pad has not been working properly and the HUD has limited information. Despite these issues, the car has a spacious and attractive interior and rides smoothly. Overall, I am happy with my decision to lease it, even though I still have 32 months left on the lease.

  2. Pedro Ritchie 2024-09-28

In my experience, I have found that this luxury SUV may not be the best fit for everyone. While it does have some impressive safety features, I have had some concerns with the accident avoidance and lane keep assist not working properly. Additionally, I have found the tech to be a bit difficult to use and the AC controls to be a bit of a pain. However, I do appreciate the spaciousness of the cabin and the overall driving experience. Ultimately, I would recommend exploring other options on the market before making a decision. Thank you for considering my perspective.

  3. Jamal Morissette 2024-08-14

For a luxury car, this was a bit of a disappointment as it lacks or has faulty features. Many features that are normally included in even mid-level cars are either lacking or poorly executed. For example, the voice recognition is poor, and the valet remote cannot be reprogrammed or replaced. Additionally, the steering wheel adjustments are only manual, and the car does not light up when approaching, although the doors unlock. Unfortunately, there is no way to change this, and there is no automatic door locking on exit. The car is also way too noisy above 30mpg, and the computer interface is inadequate with a small screen. The rear hatch is too low even in the uppermost position, making it easy to hit your head, especially if you are tall like me (I am 6'4Lane keeping assist is a concern as it only activates when the tires are on the outer lane markings, causing the car to overdrive the lane marking and forcing active avoidance. It would be great if Volvo could improve this feature to maintain proper lane discipline. It seems that Volvo is a bit behind in terms of modern requirements compared to other brands like Honda, Acura, Infinity, Hyundai, and Lincoln. I apologize for the negative review, as I had high expectations for this car after passing on similar models like the Acura MDX AWD, Lincoln Nautilus Black Label, and Hyundai Genesis. However, after living with the car for over two years, I have become more accepting of its issues and have learned to deal with them. Poor mileage is still a concern, especially with high gas prices. Thank you for your understanding.

  4. Vaughn Powlowski 2024-06-14

The car has some areas for improvement. While the NAV may not be the most useful, I find that using Google maps on my phone works well. The cruise control can be a bit inconsistent, but generally stays within a reasonable range of the set speed. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the HUD to display much information beyond the cruise setting and speed limit. The 2” receiver is a clever feature, but it was too short for my bike rack and required some modification. Overall, I have had some minor issues with the car, but I am still exploring my options and considering other brands. On a side note, I did receive a one year service reminder, but had some difficulty scheduling an appointment with the dealer.

  5. Greyson Stoltenberg 2024-05-29

I owned an XC90 for 6 years and recently purchased a new 2022 XC90 less than 2 months ago. Last night, I parked the car and everything was fine. However, this morning when I tried to turn the wheel, I lost control of the car and it started sliding in different directions. Despite applying the brakes, the car hit the curb and stopped. I was very concerned about what happened, especially since the car had no control. I had it towed to the dealership, but they denied any issues and claimed that the car hit the curb causing the broken axle, power steering failure, and other issues. I am worried about what could have happened if there were children in the neighborhood or if I was driving on the highway. This has been a very frustrating experience with cars.

Nothing to complain about, or to suggest be changed.

  2. Cooper Durgan 2024-10-23

I bought this car with 19k miles and drove it from Washington DC to southwest Florida. I absolutely love it! It's quiet, fuel efficient, roomy, and comfortable. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. Although it's a mild hybrid and only gets 20-30 miles in 'pure electric' mode, it works just fine for most of our trips which are less than 30 miles round trip. I highly recommend this car and I'm very happy that I saved big bucks by purchasing a slightly used version that is loaded with options. Love it!

  3. Art Feil 2024-10-15

I'm glad to hear that you love it!

  4. Tristin Johns 2024-09-01

This car has all the luxury features you could want, and it's a hybrid too! Plus, it comes with a carpool sticker that's valid for three years.

  5. Toby Kuhn 2024-08-22

I recently shopped for a large SUV to replace my 7-year-old Expedition, and this vehicle won all the tests. It can carry quite a bit in the back and can comfortably seat 7 people with all the seats deployed. The SUV has plenty of power, making it a great choice for those who need a big vehicle. While we enjoy the convenience of computers, there was a bit of a learning curve when it came to using the normal controls. However, the voice control works well, especially for my wife.
