2011 Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.
The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).
At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.
In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

Common 2011 Volvo Xc90 problems
The Volvo XC90, produced between 2002 and 2014, is known for its safety and rugged feel. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners of the 2011 Volvo XC90
- Battery Drain: This issue was particularly common in 2008-2014 models, although it appears to be less common in the last two years. It was caused by the radio looking for a satellite signal, even on models that didn’t have the option equipped. Volvo later fixed this issue with a recall and software update.
- Electrical Problems: Early models of the XC90, especially the 2004 model, suffered from electrical problems that affected the operation of the gauges. The drain tubes becoming blocked were the most likely cause. Before deciding to avoid a 2004 model year, it is suggested to check the service record as this may have been previously repaired.
- Hinge Wear: After a certain mileage, the hinges begin to wear, causing the doors to not close properly. This is due to an insufficient amount of lubrication. Regular maintenance and lubrication can help prevent this issue.
- Engine and Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported gearbox problems at relatively low mileages (less than 30,000) and the injectors on the diesels also fail sometimes. The latter problem can cost £1200 to fix, so if a diesel XC90 is reluctant to start, it is advisable to walk away.
- Steering Failure: In 2006, it was found that under continuous exceptionally hard use, the steering could fail. This issue affected 18,728 cars, and it is important to check if the work has been carried out if this recall is relevant to the model you’re buying.
- Interior Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the multimedia block, which displays music, climate control, and parking sensors. There were problems with the radio, and non-branded radios could not be installed since the connection with the car's system was specific to Volvo.
- Service Section: Some owners have reported a brutal experience with the service section of the dealership, implying that this make/model of XC90 is of poor quality and plagued with problems. This can be a significant concern for those looking for a reliable and long-lasting vehicle.
It is important to note that the XC90 is generally considered a very reliable vehicle. However, these common issues can affect the overall ownership experience. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent or address these issues.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-02-08
- VIN: YV4952CY2B1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT IN SEVERAL VOLVO CAR MODELS SINCE 2008. THERE IS CURRENTLY A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IN PLACE DUE TO THIS DEFECT. THE DEFECT INVOLVES THE VOLVO XM/SIRIUS RADIO SYSTEM INSTALLED IN MANY VOLVO MODELS AND RESULTING BATTERY DRAIN, BATTERY REPLACEMENT COSTS, VOLVO FIRMWARE UPGRADE COSTS AND THE ADDITIONAL INABILITY TO PASS CALIFORNIA SMOG TESTS. THE PROBLEM: WHEN AN AFFECTED VOLVO VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE AN ACTIVE SUBSCRIPTION TO XM/SIRIUS RADIO, THE INTEGRATED VOLVO RADIO SYSTEM CONTINUALLY AND CONSTANTLY CHECKS FOR XM/SIRIUS ACCOUNT REACTIVATION, EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF. THIS CONSTANT ELECTRONIC SEARCHING DRAINS A NEW AND FULLY CHARGED BATTERY WITHIN TWO TO THREE DAYS. THIS HAS LEFT MANY VEHICLE OWNERS STRANDED AND HAS COST OWNERS THOUSANDS IN UNNECESSARY REPAIRS, BATTERY REPLACEMENTS AND TOWING CHARGES. (THIS FREQUENTLY OCCURS TO VOLVO OWNERS LEAVING THEIR VEHICLES AT AIRPORT PARKING FOR A FEW DAYS.) VOLVO HAS BEEN SLOW TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND HAS BEEN CHARGING CAR OWNERS FOR BATTERY REPLACEMENTS AND FIRMWARE UPGRADES. FURTHERMORE, WHEN THE BATTERY DIES, IT RESETS THE COMPUTER SYSTEMS INCLUDING THE OBDII WHICH IS REQUIRED FOR SMOG TEST READINESS. THE ONEROUS DRIVE CYCLE REQUIRED TO GET THE OBDII SYSTEM INTO READINESS STATE PREVENTS USERS FROM BEING ABLE TO COMPLETE SMOG CERTIFICATIONS IN CALIFORNIA. VOLVO DEALERS WANT TO CHARGE $500 TO COMPLETE THIS SMOG TEST READINESS DRIVE CYCLE, EVEN THOUGH THERE IS NOTHING ELSE WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE EXCEPT FOR THE MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTIVE AND BATTERY DRAINING XM/SIRIUS SYSTEM AND THE ONEROUS DRIVE CYCLE THAT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPLETE ON SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ROADS & HIGHWAYS. (OUR MECHANIC, MY WIFE AND I HAVE ALL TRIED TO COMPLETE THE DRIVE CYCLE AND HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL.) THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN DESIGN AND USABILITY WHICH VOLVO SHOULD BE REPAIRING WITHOUT COST TO THE CAR OWNER.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-03-02
- VIN: YV4952CZ5B1
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: RECENTLY WE LOST THE SERPENTINE BELT WITHOUT KNOWING IT. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR COMPUTER MESSAGE CALLED OUR ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT WE WERE RUNNING ON BATTERY. THE ONLY INDICATION OF A PROBLEM WAS THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. WE DROVE A SHORT DISTANCE TO A VOLVO REPAIR FACILITY AND LEARNED WE LOST THE SERPENTINE BELT, THUS THE ALTERNATOR, WATER PUMP,POWER STEERING AND AIR CONDITIONER WERE INOPERATIVE. WE WERE INFORMED THAT THE COMPUTER CONTROLS EVERYTHING AND WOULD NOT ISSUE A WARNING UNTIL THE ENGINE OVERHEATED AND/OR THE BATTERY WAS CLOSE TO FAILING. THIS IS A RECIPE FOR DISASTER FOR A DRIVER OR FAMILY WHO MIGHT DRIVE INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION OR AT THE VERY LEAST HARM THE ENGINE THROUGH OVERHEATING. THE LOSS OF THE ALTERNATOR SHOULD SEND A WARNING TO THE DRIVER THAT THERE IS A SERIOUS ENGINE MALFUNCTION AND TO STOP AT THE EARLIEST SAFE PLACE AND SEEK ASSISTANCE.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-02-16
- VIN: YV4952CZ0B1

IT STARTED FINE AGAIN WITH NO ISSUES AND SINCE THEN RUNNING FINE AND I PUT CLOSE TO 800 MILES. HOWEVER, THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT INCLUDE XC90 IN THE LIST OF CARS AFFECTED FOR MODEL YEAR 2011. DEALER SIMPLY SUGGESTED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ($ 6681) AND VOLVO DENIED ANY HELP. I CALLED THE DEALER REGARDING UPGRADING SOFTWARE ON THE MODULES AND THEY SUGGESTED IT WOULD COST FEW HUNDRES TO DO IT.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-24
- VIN: YV4952CZ2B1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE BATTERY IN THE VEHICLE FAILS DUE TO A DRAIN IN THE POWER SYSTEMS BECAUSE OF A FAILURE IN SOFTWARE SYSTEMS ,THIS FAULT IS KNOWN TO VOLVO AND THEY REFUSE TO REPAIR .IF THE CAR IS NOT DRIVEN EVERY DAY THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS SEARCH FOR BLUE TOOTH PHONE SIGNALS AND SATELLITE RADIO SIGNALS CAUSING A DRAIN ON THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS ENOUGH TO KILL THE BATTERY ON A DAILY BASIS. VOLVO SAYS THEY HAVE A REPAIR FOR THIS AND SAY THAT I MUST PAY. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT TO VOLVO THEY SHOULD REPAIR THIS. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-06-04
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: EVERY TIME I DO NOT TURN MY CAR ON FOR 2 OR MORE CONSECUTIVE DAYS MY CAR BATTERY DIES. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME 7 TIMES IN THE COURSE OF MY 2 YEAR LEASE. EACH TIME IT IS TOWED AND SENT TO VOLVO FOR SERVICE THEY REPORT THAT THEY HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM. ONE TIME THEY CLAIMED IT WAS MY BLUE TOOTH DRAINING THE BATTERY. THE NEXT TIME IT WAS SIRIUS RADIO DRAINING THE BATTERY. THE LOST GOES ON AND ON. CLEARLY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH NO SOLUTION AS MY VAR BATTERY DIES EVERY TIME IT IS LEFT UNATTENDED. WITHOUT FAIL! *TR
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS SEAT BELT AUDIO SYSTEM DEFECT *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED ACCORDING TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL, THE SEAT BELT REMINDER CONSISTED OF AN AUDIBLE SIGNAL, AN INDICATOR LIGHT ABOVE THE REAR VIEW MIRROR, AND A SYMBOL ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL THAT WOULD ALERT THE DRIVER AND FRONT SEAT PASSENGER IF THEIR SEAT BELTS WERE NOT FASTENED. HOWEVER, THE AUDIBLE SIGNAL ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS FIRST STARTED, WHICH WAS VIRTUALLY INAUDIBLE AND DID NOT OCCUR THEREAFTER EVEN IF THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER DISCONNECTED THEIR SEAT BELTS DURING THE DRIVE. THE INDICATOR ON THE REAR VIEW MIRROR AND SYMBOL ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WERE ONLY MOMENTARY. THE CONSUMER STATED THE SEAT BELT WARNING WAS INADEQUATE AND ALL TOO EASILY MISSED ESPECIALLY BY SENIOR CITIZENS, WHETHER THEY ARE THE PASSENGER OR THE DRIVER. *JB
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-05-01
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: SHORTLY AFTER WE PURCHASED OUR 2011 VOLVO XC90 BRAND NEW WE HAVE EXPERIENCED A LAGS IN ACCELERATION. WHEN ACCELERATING THE CAR WOULD ROLL VERY SLOWLY UNLESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS COMPLETELY FLOORED. WE WAITED UNTIL OUR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE WAS DUE TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, AND WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THEY COULD NOT RECREATE THE CIRCUMSTANCE. THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD UPDATE THE CAR'S COMPUTER WHICH SEEMED TO WORK BRIEFLY, BUT SHORTLY AFTER THE LAGGING BEGAN AGAIN. IT EVENTUALLY BECAME MORE AND MORE COMMON AND NOW IT IS HAPPENING MANY TIMES A WEEK. AFTER OBSERVING THESE LAGS IN ACCELERATION WE HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THIS OCCURS WHENEVER YOU STOP TO MAKE A TURN. I HAVE BEEN DOING RESEARCH FOR SOME TIME NOW AND REPORTS ARE JUST NOW STARTING TO APPEAR. IT IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-07-28
- VIN: YV4952CY1B1
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I FIRST EXPERIENCED THE DELAY IN RE-ACCELERATION ONE MORNING ON MY WAY TO WORK. AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP @ A STOP SIGN, I STEPPED ON THE GAS TO TAKE A TURN AND THE CAR HESITATED AT A VERY SLOW PACE TO TAKE OFF. I CHALKED IT UP AS THE CAR BEING COLD EARLY IN THE MORNING. IT CONTINUED TO HAPPEN PERIODICALLY UNTIL ONE DAY IT HAPPENED AS I WAS STOPPED AT A BUSY INTERSECTION WAITING TO TURN LEFT. WHEN THE INTERSECTION WAS CLEARED OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC FROM A REASONABLE DISTANCE I PRESSED THE GAS TO GO AND THE CAR LITERALLY DRAGGED IN SLOW MOTION INTO THE INTERSECTION. THE ACCELERATION WAS SO SLOW THAT IT ALLOWED TIME FOR THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC TO REACH ME. WITH THE FRONT OF MY CAR IN THE INTERSECTION AND THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC COMING DIRECTLY AT ME AT FULL SPEED I HAD TO FLOOR THE GAS PEDAL TO JUMP KICK THE CAR INTO SPEED TO GET ACROSS THE INTERSECTION SAFELY. AFTER THAT NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE I CALLED MY DEALER IMMEDIATELY. THEY WERE ABLE TO GET ME IN THE NEXT DAY, GAVE ME A LOANER VEHICLE AND KEPT MY CAR OVERNIGHT. I GOT A CALL FROM MY SERVICE ADVISOR THE NEXT AFTERNOON STATING THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER THEY WILL RESET THE CARS COMPUTER TO SEE IF THAT HELPS. WELL IT DIDN'T. I NOW DON'T DRIVE THE CAR UNLESS I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. IT'S STILL HAPPENING AND I DON'T FEEL COMPLETELY SAFE WHEN DRIVING MY CAR. OUR DAUGHTER WILL BE GETTING HER LICENSE SOON AND WE THOUGHT OUT OF OUR TWO CARS THAT THE VOLVO XC90 WILL BE THE SAFEST FOR HER TO DRIVE. NOW I DON'T SEE IT AS EVEN BEING AN OPTION FOR HER. I'VE BEEN ONLINE RESEARCHING SIMILAR COMPLAINTS BY OTHER 2011 VOLVO XC90 OWNERS AND DIDN'T FIND MUCH OF ANYTHING. PERHAPS THERE WERE JUST A FEW BAD APPLES OUT OF THE BUNCH AND I JUST HAPPENED TO GET ONE OF THEM. MY 2011 WAS PURCHASED NEW OFF THE SHOWROOM'S FLOOR JUNE 2011 WITH 550 MILES AT DELIVERY. I NOW HAVE A LITTLE OVER 4000 MILES. *KB

This is fantastic news! I'm so glad to hear that you were able to get the exact same vehicle that you've been driving for the past 40 years. Volvo really deserves a round of applause for creating such a safe, efficient, and quiet car that also has all the amenities you need. It's great to see that you're enjoying your new ride!

Out of the ML350, Q5, MDX, RX350 and X5, we ultimately chose the XC90 because my wife loved it the most. It had the best overall visibility and we've been driving it for almost 4 months now without any issues. While the fuel mileage isn't great at 14 in town and 21 on the road, it's competitive with most of the other vehicles in its class. Plus, it's worth noting that the XC-90 is the least expensive option, which is definitely a bonus.

I got this car for my wife and we did the European delivery program which was amazing. I highly recommend it! I've owned many Volvos and this one is the best so far. The only issue I've had is that the plastic molding on the right middle pillar rattles over jittery bumps and the interior materials are not the most up to date. However, if you get the 3.2, you'll probably want AWD because it makes the driving experience much better. Without it, the car can feel a bit slow.

As a father of five kids, I love to drive with both style and safety. What better car to do it with than this one? 😍

Great so far!! No issues

We recently purchased a car through the military program and were excited to receive it fully loaded. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the BLIS system and had to take it to the shop shortly after receiving it. Although the mirror was not properly attached when we got it back, the dealership was able to fix it for us. However, we did encounter another problem when the DVD player stopped working just three months later. When we brought it in for repairs, we were informed that there was a recall and the car could not be taken off the lot. While this was frustrating, we understand the importance of safety recalls. We were disappointed to find out that our headphones were lost and the car was not cleaned properly when we picked it up. We requested that the dealership clean it, but were told that we would have to pay for it. Overall, we have had some challenges with this 6-month-old car, but we remain hopeful that the dealership will work with us to resolve these issues.

I am confident in my experience with cars and can say that the 2010 XC90 3.2 is a reliable and comfortable vehicle with a great style. Despite owning it for 6 years and driving it for 71K miles, I have never had any issues with the rear differential until now. It is important to note that I have owned many cars and have never had issues with rear differentials, except for my Land Rover LR2 2010, which was replaced by the dealer at 36K miles. I made the mistake of purchasing a Land Rover because it had the same drive parts as my Volvo, but it turned out to be a Ford part. Overall, I am confident in the quality of my Volvo and its parts.
Reed Torp 2024-04-01
My wife and I purchased our Volvo XC90 while living in the UK, but since we were returning to the US within a year, we had the vehicle built to US specifications. When it comes to safety, the vehicle is 100% safe for the first 36K miles. However, my wife and I have had to replace the driver's side seatbelt twice, which suggests that Volvo may have cut corners on some unseen components. I have never had to replace a seatbelt, and I have owned cars with 190K miles that still had their original factory seatbelts. Additionally, the AC system failed on my wife's car with less than 36K miles and no warning. Fortunately, our vehicle was still under warranty. I was surprised to find that the car has manual lumbar support, which seems outdated for a 2011 model. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle used; it is best to buy new with a warranty. If you plan on keeping the car long-term, make sure to maintain the warranty and have a maintenance package. The level of technology in this vehicle is weak compared to other 2011 models. Volvo attempted to make a significant leap with their new XC-90, which I have driven, but the infotainment system was a tech blunder. Overall, I believe that Volvo is trying to save money by making subtle changes to current models, but they are trying to make big leaps when they redesign their vehicles, which introduces too many changes in one package and creates too many potential problems. Additionally, support for Volvo along the Gulf Coast is limited, with only two dealerships in my area, both of which are more than 30 minutes away. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle if your nearest dealership is more than an hour away, as it will be costly to have it serviced. It is best to avoid third-party repair shops or parts. Thank you for reading. At this point, my wife and I have owned this car for 9 years and it has 66000 miles on it. Despite its age, I would still give it a three-star rating. However, there have been some additional issues since my last review. The passenger side BLIS sensor constantly gives false indications or the whole system locks up when the vehicle is first started up. The moonroof cover is no longer connected to the track it was in, even though my wife and I have rarely used the moonroof. The headliner up by the windshield has started to delaminate. This is a 2011 vehicle and my 1997 Eddie Bauer's headliner stayed intact the whole time we had it, and we bought that in 2003. The only reason why I got rid of the Ford was because it had 200K miles and major parts were starting to fail. Also, the AC system has never been the same since the time it went out. The receiver for the driver's side seatbelt has also started having issues with locking in the belt. In short, I would not recommend buying this body style Volvo, no matter what price the dealer is offering it to you at. You'll end up spending more money on keeping it running and in decent condition than the monthly payment, unless you buy it outright. I think they stopped making this version of the XC-90 around 2015. On another note, I would advise against buying a new Volvo XC-90 until they put manual AC controls on the dash again because everything is under the iPad menus right now. I know it sounds silly, but if you live somewhere outside of Europe where you have blistering hot summers, you need backup controls for your AC just in case the iPad display fails. And yes, iPads do fail, and they are even more likely to fail if you can't park your car in a garage when you aren't using it. This vehicle is not worth the money as used or certified pre-owned. In short, I would recommend staying away from these XC-90s.
