2006 Volvo Xc90 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002 and now in its second generation.

The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic).

At the end of 2014, the second generation XC90 was introduced. It is based on a new global platform, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Both generations of the XC90 have won Motor Trend's SUV of the Year award in their debuts.

In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-05
  • VIN: YV4CN592961
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Awakened to lights flashing, horn going off, wipers running on a vehicle that was parked with keys removed. The cem underneath driver's side dash had gotten wet from rain water leaking into it and subsequently shorted out requiring $2350 replacement via dealer. This IS A Huge problem.... however, and wait for it. IT IS NOT DUE TO THE SUNROOF.... I know this with absolute certainty because I have 3 2006-2010 xc90's and NONE HAVE SUNROOFS but all 3 had to have CEM reprogrammed. I can't understand why NOTHING has been done about this... it's absurd.

  • VIN: YV4CZ852661

  • Summary: This has happened multiple times on the highway going 60 mph. And at slow speeds, last time on an entrance ramp onto the highway. The vehicle will shut off, as if the key has been turned off. But it hasn't been touched. Steering becomes difficult and I have to try and get off the road. Once I get pulled over and put it in park, it will start and run normally for a time. It most often happens when i turn to the right fairly tight. But not exclusively. Today after driving it approximately 120 miles with one shut off, my check engine light came on and it was difficult to get started again. This is absolutely a Hazzard to others and myself

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-13
  • VIN: yv4cz852161
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
  • Summary: the drivers side electric seat controls are causing unsafe driving conditions. i drive with the seat all the way back and down. I have the memory sets all for that position. Problem is when I get back in the car it will be back up and forward al the way. So i will set it back down. Well while ia m driving it will automatically start raising back up and forward. As you can imagine this gets very uncomfortable and feels like i am getting choked to death. I will set it back and it will keep doing that . I will hear clicking and then it will start moving. sometimes. i will have to hold my finger on the down button to keep it from moving on me while im driving, sometimes it will still move all the way up while i am holding the button down. and then it will get all the way forward and the buttons will not work for me for a while. Im stuck in the forward up position choking and cant do anything about it. Eventually they will start working again nut its a very impossible position to be left in. I don't know why it is doing this. I feel like I have a Christine car(from the movie) . I haven't taken it anywhere and not sure where to go. I feel like the dealer would try to hide the problem.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-03-09
  • VIN: YV4CZ852161
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: HAVE RESEARCHED THIS CAR AFTER I BOUGHT IT USED FROM A SMALL DEALERSHIP AND SEEMS LIKE A LARGE PROBLEM WITH ALL TYPES OF VOLVO'S. I HAD MY CAR FOR A COUPLE DAYS, SHOP NOTICED THERE WAS AN OIL LEAK. TURNED OUT TO BE THE REAR MAIN SEAL. DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT FIX IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS WITHIN WARRANTY. SAVED UP FOR 2 MONTHS STRAIGHT TO PAY $1100 CASH OUT OF POCKET TO GET IT FIXED BY MY PERSONAL MECHANIC. RIGHT BEFORE I TOOK IT IN TO GET THE WORK DONE, THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHIFTING HARD WHILE DRIVING IN CITY. HIGHWAY IT WAS FINE. HAD THE SEAL REPLACED, TRANSMISSION FLUSHED BEFORE PUTTING BACK TOGETHER THINKING IT WOULD SOLVE PROBLEM. NOPE! SO I SAVED UP ONCE AGAIN TO GO TO THE ACTUAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND PAY $200 OUT OF POCKET FOR A REFLASH ED AND SOFTWARE UPDATE ON THE TRANSMISSION. DIDN'T WORK! LOOKED UP OTHER POSSIBLE PROBLEMS THAT COULD BE CAUSING TRANSMISSION TO SHIFT WEIRD...NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT OTHER PETES VOLVO'S DOING THE SAME THING! SO WHY HASN'T VOLVO DONE A RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION? IT'S A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE IS DRIVING AND THE THING SLAMS INTO PARK OR ANY OTHER GEAR AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I'M SCARED TO DRIVE MY OWN CAR AND I'M TO THE POINT WHERE I CAN'T DUMP ANYMORE MONEY INTO IT AND HAVE TO TRADE IT IN FOR A DIFFERENT CAR. PLEASE HELP AND MAKE VOLVO RECALL THE TRANSMISSIONS BEFORE MYSELF OR MY HUSBAND AND 2 KIDS DIE BECAUSE OF THEIR NEGLIGENCE!!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-05-17
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 6 MONTHS, THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER WITHOUT WARNING WHILE IN TRANSIT. YESTERDAY, IT OCCURRED ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY AT 60 MPH. THE CAR DIED WITHOUT WARNING WITH RESULTANT LOSS OF POWER STEARING, BREAKING, DASH, ETC. WE WERE ABLE TO COAST INTO A BREAKDOWN LANE, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTEROUS. STATE POLICE ARRIVED WITHIN MINUTES OF DIALING 911. THIS HAPPENED 6 MONTHS AGO AS WELL AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED A FUEL INJECTOR MODULE. THE INTERNET IS REPLEAT WITH VERY SIMILAR ISSUES INVOLVING THIS MODEL AND VINTAGE. THE COMMON RESPONSE FROM VOLVO DEALERS SEEMS TO BE THAT IT IS AN "ACT OF GOD". THIS IS A DEFECT, NOT AN ACT OF GOD, AND THESE VEHICLES SHOULD BE RECALLED. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THERE WILL BE MAJOR INJURIES OR DEATHS AS A RESULT OF THE DEFECT.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-21
  • VIN: YV4CM592661
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: WITHOUT ANY WARNING, THE MOTOR SUDDENLY DROPPED FROM 60-65 MPH TO 35-40 AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE BEYOND THIS- I GOT A WARNING MESSAGE AFTER THIS HAPPENED "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE". RESEARCH ON THIS LATER TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS "LIMP MODE." I WAS ON AN EXPRESSWAY AND OTHER VEHICLES AROUND ME, INCLUDING MANY LARGE SEMI TRUCKS, WERE DRIVING AT HIGH SPEEDS. FORTUNATELY, I HAD JUST COME OUT OF A TOLL PLAZA AND WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE SO I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE WAY QUICKLY ENOUGH TO AVOID A COLLISION. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED SINCE IT WAS NOT SAFE TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE AT SUCH A SLOW SPEED AND I WAS FAR FROM A SUITABLE EXIT. MY REPAIR SHOP IDENTIFIED A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE PCV (VALVE) I SEE ON RESEARCH OF EARLIER MODELS OF THIS CAR THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN "WARRANTY EXTENSION" FOR THIS VERY PROBLEM. MY CAR APPARENTLY WAS NOT INCLUDED ON THIS EXTENSION, BUT I FIND IT SUSPECT THAT I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE MAY NOT BE THAT MANY REPORTS OF PROBLEMS LIKE THIS WITH MY PARTICULAR MODEL YEAR BECAUSE A LARGE NUMBER OF THE 2006 XC90S HAD EARLY TRANSMISSION FAILURES AND ARE NO LONGER BEING USED. *TR

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-05
  • VIN: YV4CM592661
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE SUSPENSION OF THIS CAR IN THE PAST TWO YEARS.- UP UNTIL RECENTLY, THESE WERE THE ONLY PROBLEMS I HAD WITH THE CAR. FIRST THE STRUT ENGINE MOUNT BRACE AND TORQUE RODS NEEDED REPLACING, THEN AT 155,000 I NEEDED TO HAVE THE FRONT BALL JOINT,CONTROL ARMS AND BUSHINGS REPLACED. AT 158,000 I HAD TO REPLACE THE RIGHT REAR KNUCKLE AND WHEEL BEARINGS. NOW AT 189,000 I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY OUTER TIE RODS. I HAD JUST THOUGHT THESE WERE EXPECTED WEAR AND TEAR FOR A HIGH MILEAGE VEHICLE, BUT I SAW THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS FOR FAILURES OF THESE PARTS IN SOME VERSIONS OF MY CAR. I CHECKED WITH VOLVO AND THEY CLAIMED THAT MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THESE RECALLS. BUT I DO FIND IT SUSPICIOUS THAT I NOW AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUES THAT SO MANY "OTHER VERSIONS" OF MY MODEL AND YEAR VEHICLE HAD. SHOULD MY CAR HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALLS? HOW DO THEY DETERMINE WHICH ONES HAVE A PROBLEM AND WHICH ONES DO NOT? THANKS *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-12-15

  • Summary: THIS IS THEN SECOND TIME THE IGNITION SWITCH ON MY 2006 VOLVO XC 90 HAS FAILED. THE ORIGINAL WAS REPLACED WITH A NEW SWITCH AND NOW THAT REPLACEMENT SWITCH HAS ALSO FAILED. THIS SHOULD NOT BE A PART THAT FAILS TWICE IN 7 YEARS. *TR

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-28
  • VIN: YV4CZ592261
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I ENTERED THE CAR AND ATTEMPTED TO PUT ON THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT. IT WOULD NOT RELEASE FROM ITS HOUSING (INSIDE THE PANEL ABOVE MY LEFT SHOULDER). IT MADE A STRONG CLICKING NOISE, AS IF IT HAD LOCKED UP. I MADE NUMEROUS OTHER ATTEMPTS TO PUT ON MY SEAT BELT, WITH THE ENGINE TURNED ON, TURNED OFF, CAR IN PARK, CAR IN DRIVE, CAR MOVING. NO CHANGE. I FEEL THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. WHEN I CALLED VOLVO, THEY TOLD ME THAT SEATBELTS WERE ONLY COVERED UNDER A 5 YEAR WARRANTY. I WOULD EXPECT SEATBELTS TO HAVE MANDATORY LIFETIME WARRANTIES, REQUIRED BY LAW. I AM SURPRISED TO FIND THAT THIS IS NOT THE CASE. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-07
  • VIN: YV4CZ852461
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHILE GOING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND IN A SLIGHT TURN (VERY MILD CURVE), TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME SLOWED. I MOVED MY FOOT TO THE BRAKE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS "HARD" AND THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK. I LET OFF THE BRAKE AND PUT MY FOOT BACK ON THE PEDAL AGAIN, VERY FIRMLY. THE ABS IMMEDIATELY KICKED IN. HAD TRAFFIC NOT STARTED TO SPEED UP, I WOULD HAVE REAR-ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. NOT FUN, VOLVO. WHEN YOU PRESS THE BRAKES, YOU EXPECT THEM TO ACTUALLY WORK. NO ERROR MESSAGES WERE ON FOR THE BRAKE SYSTEM OR ANY OTHER ERROR MESSAGES AT ALL. THE BRAKES JUST DIDN'T WORK. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-10-27
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: OWNED CAR 2ND HAND FOR 2 YEARS NOW. THE PAST 2 WEEKS MY TURNING SIGNAL, DRIVERS SIDE MIRRORS, INTERIOR LIGHTS, DISPLAY COUNSEL FLASHES ON AND OFF. ESPECIALLY WHEN I USE TURNING SIGNAL. BEING TOLD ECM BOX WATER GETS INTO SYSTEM. VOLVO DOES NOT SUPPORT THEIR PRODUCT. SO DISAPPOINTED. I WAS READY TO BUY A NEW XC60. NOT A CHANCE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-07-11
  • VIN: YV4CZ592661
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I DROVE HOME FROM WORK AND MESSAGES STARTED TO APPEAR WARNING ME OF THE ENGINE NOT WORKING PROPERLY, LOW BEAMS NOT WORKING. DROVE IT HOME. TURNED IT OFF & WIPERS WOULD NOT STOP. WE UNHOOKED THE BATTERY CABLE USING THE MANUAL. TOOK IT TO HAVE BATTERY TESTED, BAD CELL. REPLACED BATTERY & WIPERS QUIT WORKING, AIR BAG LIGHT WARNING CAME ON. TOOK TO MECHANIC TO HAVE WIPER MOTOR TESTED, IT WAS FINE. TOOK TO VOLVO, THEY WANTED TO REPLACE WIPER MOTOR, TOLD THEM THAT WAS NOT THE ONLY PROBLEM. TOOK TO DIFFERENT VOLVO AND THEY DIAGNOSED, AFTER THREE HOURS, THE CEM WAS CORRODED DUE TO A CRACK IN THE BOX THAT HOUSES IT. WANTED $3500 FOR THE REPAIR. I LEFT WITHOUT IT AND STARTED TO RESEARCH IT. FOUND OUT VOLVO ACKNOWLEDGED A FAULT IN THE SEAL IN A TRAFFIC SAFETY REPORT. CONTACTED VOLVO ABOUT THE REPAIR, STARTED DISCUSSIONS ABOUT A GOOD WILL REPAIR, THREE WEEKS LATER I RECEIVED A CALL STATING THEY WOULD NOT COVER ANY PART OF IT. THE VOLVO LOOSES POWER AND COULD BE UNSAFE AT ANY TIME. THERE ARE MANY DISCUSSIONS OF THIS ON DIFFERENT VOLVO. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW VOLVO SAYS IT IS A FAULT OF THE PART AND THEN REFUSES TO REPLACE IT. I AM DRIVING IT AT THIS TIME, WHILE I FIGURE OUT A MORE ECONOMICAL ROUTE. *TR

Negative 2006 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

This was a 40th birthday present, but unfortunately, it has not lived up to our expectations. We have had some issues with the fuel pump, which went out in the first year, and we were stranded in the middle of nowhere. Additionally, there have been three recalls, and we have had to take multiple trips to fix the middle console and front end steering, which made popping noises. We also experienced a grinding noise in reverse, which took several trips to diagnose, and the side window leaks. The OEM tires were terrible, and we had to replace the brakes every 25,000 miles. The power steering pump also went out, and now the car is having trouble going in reverse, and the key mechanism is also problematic. To top it off, the fuel door latch broke, and it cost us $350 to fix. We have decided to cut our losses and trade it for a GMC SLT Yukon, which we hope will be a better fit for us. We would advise others to spend their $42K elsewhere!

We bought our XC90 as a certified pre-owned vehicle and have had no problems whatsoever since purchase. Overall, the fit and finish of the XC90 is very good and reliability is excellent. While the 2.5T is not a powerhouse of an engine, it is adequate for highway and city driving. It's a great, safe family car.

I bought the Volvo XC90 V8 because of its safety and convenience features, but unfortunately, I've had a lot of problems with it. It stalls frequently and poses a hazard. After researching online, I found out that many other buyers have also experienced issues with the Volvo XC90. In the future, I think I'll stick with Toyota/Lexus. This Volvo has been a headache. By the way, this SUV was supposed to be for my wife, who is 7 months pregnant, but she won't be driving it. Another issue is the towing capacity, which is rated at 5000 pounds with only the driver. However, this capacity decreases rapidly with passengers and cargo, and it also requires a transmission cooler and brake controller, which the dealers won't install.

I had a bad experience with my XC-90. I found the treatment from the Volvo dealership in Houston to be unsatisfactory. However, I believe that if you are wealthy, you may receive better service. Unfortunately, owning a Volvo can be expensive. I have had to replace multiple wheel bearings, the rear end, and the fuel pump. I also had to pay a significant amount to fix the steering column and the windshield. The headlights are also fogged from the inside. Overall, I have had some issues with my XC-90, but I hope to find a solution soon.

Hi there! I'm excited to share my thoughts on the XC-90 with you. Having owned numerous cars/trucks/SUVs in my lifetime, I can confidently say that the XC-90 is an outstanding ride. I recently drove it all the way from Arizona to Alabama and it performed beautifully on both long and short trips. One of the things I love about this SUV is how safe it makes me feel while driving, thanks to its impressive safety features. While the interior may not be the most luxurious, I do have to say that the ride more than makes up for it. Plus, with service only required every 7500 miles, you can rest assured that you're driving a reliable Volvo. Thanks for reading!

Positive 2006 Volvo Xc90 car reviews

You've made an excellent choice with the XC90! It's a fantastic SUV that doesn't feel like one at all. The ride and handling are outstanding, and the V8 engine is a work of engineering art that sounds great. The fit and finish of the XC90 are top-notch, making it a great value for the price. I'm also impressed with how comfortable it is, even for someone as big as you. Overall, the XC90 is a great choice that can't be beaten for the price.

I have this car fully loaded. The navigation is great with a big screen that prompts you accurately. I also love the DVD system with its twin screens. The car drives smoothly and I haven't had any problems (knock on wood). I previously owned a Mercedes that had issues every few months, so this car is an excellent value for the price. Plus, you can use cheap gas and the Booster Seat is a great feature.

The Volvo XC90 V8 is an impressive SUV with excellent performance. Driving it feels almost like a Volvo V70 or a similar car. The brakes are highly effective, and the seats are incredibly comfortable. The only thing missing is a sunroof above the third-row seats. When you fold down the third-row seats, the XC90 has a huge cargo area, which is the same size as in the Excursion, or even bigger. In my opinion, the XC90 is the best SUV I've ever driven. It has awesome performance, a good cargo area, a superb audio system, and awesome quality. The materials used in the car are very well chosen, everything feels well done, and nothing feels cheap or plastic.

  4. Payton White 2024-10-19

I love my XC90! The car is well designed and has been solid as a rock so far. The buying experience was the easiest I've ever had and the car has lived up to its billing by Volvo. Although the headlight washers squirted onto the hood (had the dealer disconnect), Volvo took care of it. The Homelink system had to be replaced, but Volvo took care of that too. The mileage could be better, but I'm getting about 18.5 mpg combined driving, so not too bad. If you want a well-built, comfortable, and fun SUV to drive, get one!

Great use of space! It's amazing how much cargo space there is, or you can fit up to 7 people comfortably. As someone who lives in Colorado, I can attest to the excellent power provided by the turbo for high altitude driving. Recently, some friends of mine compared a Lexus RX with an XC90 on I-70 during high winds (40-50 mph and gusty) that we sometimes experience on the front range. They said the XC90 was vastly superior. I can't speak for the Lexus, but I can say that my XC90 handles these winds like no other car I've ever driven.
